They do it their way and it was a delightful meal. Tomatoes for the caprice salad from their own garden gives you a hint of their focus and the attention to doing things right. Not a lot of flexibility in the courses of the 4 course dinners, but just go with it and enjoy. This place doubles as my favorite fine dining and favorite casual lunch spot in Butte. Grab high quality cafeteria lunch for less than you would spend at a fast food drive through. Classic French dishes in an old uptown building in Butte - what a treat for our anniversary road trip. I had Coquille St Jacques - rich, creamy, no longer politically-correct, but absolutely flawless and delicious and far superior to today's scallop prep methods. Partner had lemon-ricotta-pistachio ravioli that was outrageously good. Corn chowder soup and stuffed clams and hot, fresh bread came first. The meal is served French-style with several courses, so if you order an appetizer, be prepared to take some of your main course with you. The only reason I'm deducting a star is that some of the staff were a bit challenged in service for this quality of restaurant. I had ordered a cup of decaf to have before the meal and it didn't come out until after they brought the soup. In addition, we had to ask numerous times to get our water refilled. A little training of the help would go a long way toward making this an exceptional dining experience. read more

This is one of the nicest restaurants in Butte. We come here for all of our special occasions. They have buffet-style lunches where they offer two main courses, two soups, a salad bar, and various sides and desserts. For dinner, I really like the Filet Uptown. They also exhibit art for sale on the walls. Definitely one of my favorite places to go! read more

After reading great reviews online I decided I had to stop in to try this Butte classic (dining date, May 22, 2013). The menu was posted outside the clean historic building. I liked the dynamic menu, often a sign that the chef likes to cook with the seasons. One item stood out, the Beef Wellington. I couldn't wait to get a juicy pink hunk of tenderloin into my mouth. The inside of the establishment was warmly lit and the wall art gave it a modern feel. The greeting was great and I was led to a table immediately. I will say that the fine-dining décor (white table cloths) collided awkwardly with the uniforms of the staff. They were all wearing the kind of t-shirts you would expect at a bar and grill on the beach. I assume they were trying to go for a 'casual' vibe. Fine dining does not have to be pretentious but you can still put forth an inviting vibe without wearing it on your backs. Unfortunately for me, the casual attitude extended to the attention to detail and quality of nearly the entire meal. I ordered right away, "the Wellington please"! The meal came with something called Clams Maison and a Caesar salad. I was excited. I sampled some wine and chose a Pinot that was delicious and heavy. Not so appetizing was the dab of butter that graced the goblet it was served in. I am not a wine snob, but my favorite pairing for wine is...a clean glass. It begs the question, "if you cannot pay attention to the contamination you can see, how careful are you at preventing contamination by those things you cannot"? Next came the clams. Nothing gets my mouth watering quicker than succulent creatures from the seashore. If you're like me, nothing will disappoint faster than this "clam" dish as it lacked all that is good about clams. Fresh clams are delicious and need very little assistance in releasing their briny buttery flavor, therefore, you don't need to mess with them too much. Based on the menu description, I was expecting whole clams with a light herbed breading. What I got were two small scallop shells filled with pasty goo with a hint of clam flavor. It tasted like a small amount of canned and pureed clam meat had been mixed with warm flour paste. Besides, what is the idea behind a clam inside a scallop shell? Pick one or the other. Give me steamed clams, and I'll be as happy as one. I'll dance a jig for some tasty seared scallops. A pair of seashells filled with blended bivalve? That's a dish only suitable for the nondiscerning alley cat. I sent them back and was not offered a replacement. Ok, off to a rocky start, but I'm thinking it can only get better with the next course, Caesar salad. Can't go wrong there - fresh, crispy, sweet, hint of lemon, garlic, parm, and anchovy, am I right? Wrong. What I was served included mostly undressed bitter yellow hearts, except for the center of the plate where globs of what tasted and looked like mayonnaise was plopped randomly on a few of the leaves. To quote the play of the same name "for my own part, it was Greek to me". At first I thought I might of accidentally been served another salad so I asked "Is this the Caesar?" and sure enough it was. Bitterly disappointing. I nervously awaited the main course. Was I going to shell out $40 for an entirely lackluster dinner? My prospects looked grim. While waiting I saw a member of the kitchen staff go from the kitchen, out another door, and then return with a vacuum package of meat. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but at this point I am not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt in terms of sourcing local beef. Along came the Wellington. It looked great aside from sitting in the center of a dizzying pattern of Hollandaise sauce. I asked for medium-rare and medium-rare it was. Regardless of its source, it tasted very nice. It actually redeemed much of the meal. I wanted to end on a good note so I decided not to take my chances with dessert. All courses arrived promptly and the staff dealt with my complaints with a smile. Uptown Diner. Ho hum. Considering the cost I expected much more. Hopefully the food quality will have gone up a notch next time I'm in town. I do plan on giving it another try. I realize that my visit was just a snapshot of how this or any restaurant performs. One kitchen staff member, server, and one off night for the chef/expediter can make for a bad dining experience. Maybe the wine glasses are the cleanest in town on other nights, someone temporarily lost the clam recipe, and the lights went out in the kitchen during the salad prep. I am willing to accept that my experience was outside the norm. That being said, for me to be willing to come back is generous as the overall dining experience really can't be taken as an average of visits but as a single experience. To me, being able to consistently put out good food is one of the many challenges of running a restaurant. Each plate is an opportunity to attract and keep customers. read more

My favorite restaurant in Montana by a long shot. My family and I have been going here for years for celebrations, big and small, and just for fun because we love it so much. My favorite dishes are the chicken piccata (on a date) and beef Wellington (with the folks, I'm still a student!) The chicken piccata is as reasonable as it is delicious but the Wellington is a real treat! I feel like you can't go wrong with anything on the menu although I haven't explored too much of it because I just can't help but order my favorites! I was disappointed with the food. The server was eager -- a little like a parody of "Fargo" but still, he gets bonus points for being attentive. The problem was the food. I had tenderloin skewers that came on a sizzling hot dish. This meant the the rare tenderloin was overcooked by the time I got to the second skewer. But, the real problem was that the meat was over salted. I also had crab stuffed artichoke hearts with hollandaise. The crab was fishy instead of sweet but was overpowered by the hollandaise. That turned out to be the good part of the meal...I just sopped the meat and fish in hollandaise and gulped my wine to wash it down. We were passing through. This may be as good as Butte gets. I'll try another place next time. read more

What a wonderful surprise to find this Gem of a restaurant. It's located in the Old town area, one block from the Finlen Hotel . Butte, Montana. We were given a recommendation by a family member who had dinner here last year. We are So glad we gave it a try. The service was pleasant, our waiter was knowledgeable on food presentation & specials. The Wine selection was as good, and not overly priced. The Food Was Wonderful. there are enough choices to please the most discrimination of palettes. The Prices were Very reasonable . I would have expected to pay more for such a meal. The dining area is nicely decorated with local artist painting. For Dinner it's white tablecloths & Candles. Lunch is casual , with a buffet offering. We tried the special of the evening which was a 4 course Dinner, Pork Medallions. The dining room is a nice size, table are not too close to each other than you hear others conversation. The restaurant was clean. You won't go away hungry. And the coffee was good. The dessert menu , was hard to choose a favorite. This Restaurant was a true find. I would highly recommend the Uptown & definitely come back next time I'm in Butte Montana. Forget the fast food places & treat yourself to real food at good prices, you wont regret it. read more

I got a recommendation to eat here for our tenth wedding anniversary from a local source while vacationing in Butte. It is definitely an upscale restaurant. The staff was friendly at first. We had a party of 6. We were seated and served our drinks pretty quickly. They have a good wine selection. The wait for our food was about an hour and a half. Definitely not a family friendly place. I will say that the mushroom soup was very good. Four of is ordered pasta, none of which was any better than I could cook at home. When I asked to add shrimp to my pasta, I was treated as a burden and the server had to go and ask if it was acceptable( it was at three dollars a piece) The best meal was the pork medallions. Very flavorful and well planned palate wise. Three of us ordered Alfredo sauce and all of them were different textures. The staff became less professional and more haughty as the meal progressed. Checking their phones and forcing us to ask three or four times for drinks. I wouldn't waste my money. There are plenty of mom and pop type restaurants in Butte to choose from. read more

We were stopping in Butte only because it was the right mileage down the road for a rest for the night. We were referred to the Uptown Cafe by the owner of the Copper King Mansion. (Well worth a tour.) Why two chefs from Pittsburgh would choose to settle in Butte, Montana is a great mystery to me. I'm eternally grateful that they did. It is a great value for a four course meal costing around $25. We make the drive from Helena, which is about an hour away, to enjoy a night out at the Uptown Café. I'm usually quite critical of restaurants and especially the food they serve, but I can't think of a single time I've stepped out of the Uptown Cafe disappointed. The quality of their food is unsurpassed by any restaurant in Butte, and I haven't had better seafood anywhere in MT (their chowder is awesome). I also appreciate the rotating artwork. The staff is very professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. The prices are excellent for what you get, including lunches, early-bird specials, or regular menu items. My only complaint is that the bathroom is usually unkempt and could use a simple remodeling job to keep it on par with the rest of the restaurant. Had dinner there last night before a show at the Mother Lode. Extremely noisy, poor service, two of the three dinner orders came out of the kitchen wrong and had to wait a long time to get the right meal while my wife's dinner got cold. Had a very difficult time getting a second round of drinks. My wife never got her side dish and had to ask for it. I used to be a fan of the Uptown but not any more. Butte really doesn't have many worthwhile dining option, so Uptown Café enjoys a reputation as one of the best (if not the best) place in town. While the menu is more interesting than Butte's slew of sports bars/beer-and-burger joints, the food falls short. The entrées are competently prepared, some are even very good, but the claims maison (touted as their specialty) must be French for "chopped clams in soggy dough." The soups are salty and unimaginative. It is inexcusable to serve store-bought dressing on a caesar salad. There's just no comparison to a true homemade dressing, but when I pointed this out to our server she insisted that "many people don't like it because it has anchovies and raw eggs." No. I didn't like it precisely because there were neither anchovies nor raw eggs. Not only was it obviously a bottled dressing, it was sprinkled with a stale powder that tasted a lot like Kraft "parmesan." Who does that? In some ways, I prefer Butte's beer-and-burger places, because they at least don't pretend to be something they're not... read more

I am definitely doing a "5 stars for Butte" rating, but it is heartfelt within those limitations. They are CLEARLY trying very hard with the menu, the wine list, and the presentation. And they were generally succeeding. I had a pork chop dinner. Pork chop was very well done with good vegetables. Mashed potatoes were a little boring/creamy but if you like them that way then... Over and above that was a really good salad (some frisee no iceberg), mushrooms, and a really nice baked squash that came alongside. Stuffed clams were also good (I used to live in Boston so I have some basis for judgement). All of that was extremely reasonably priced given my frame of reference, The wine list also showed care. Not huge, but well selected with some good bottles in there and reasonably priced. Put it all together and it would have been a "good" meal in a lot of cities and would have cost a lot more. Given the alternatives in Butte, I am very happy I found this place. read more

the Uptown offers a more refined menu in Butte, with options like quail and duck to cioppino and beef wellington. my favorite dish is offered in the summer, heirloom tomato salad. its a take on a caprese salad that uses local heirloom tomatoes dressed in a delicious red wine vinaigrette with a scoop of Amaltheia goat cheese and fresh toast points, its flavors are so simple, clean and well done. I have had almost everything on the menu and would recommend everything. a true gem! read more
