I grew up here. Pork Chop John's was a place we all seemed to love. It's a place out of town people will either love or hate. The sandwich is unique, and if made right, is a tasty treat away from the normal. I have always gotten the traditional "Loaded", but you can get one in a variety of ways. The history of the sandwich is why it's a Butte Original. The location on Harrison has changed since I lived here. 2020 didn't help. We still have had decent success at this Location in the dining room. The drive through I have not used since that 'one' time. Staff tonight are great and friendly. The cook was amusing me as he discussed his preferred way of having the orders translated. They do have their own techniques to say the least. Man so I'm torn about the place. The highs: definitely that sandwich flavor profile. The lows: the temperature of the food. Got a double pork chop sandwich deluxe style. The pork chop was good definitely have had worse in the sense that some folks just serve you up some dry dry pork. (Trust I rarely eat pork sandwiches for that reason) I wouldn't say this was juicy but it was tender, and the protagonist for the 4 stars was that miracle whip. It cut well into that porky goodness, they also didn't skimp out on the lettuce and tomato which I found fresh. The breading in the fries was also very good. Their take of season fries I liked a lot as they were crunchy, nicely seasoned, and not oily. Like I said the only downfall was that the meal itself was lukewarm. I was born and raised in Montana and every time we go back, we stop at John's for their pork chop sandwich. This was to be one of our meal highlights of our recent trip, as it has been 7 years since our last visit. Unfortunately, this became one of the most unpleasant experiences we had in our time in Montana. In fact, this was the only unpleasant experience on our trip through the entire state. First, we travel with a service animal, and even though there is a sign on the entrance (3 to be exact) allowing service animals, we still asked the person at the cash register if it would be ok to bring in our dog, who would remain on one of our laps. She checked with the person preparing the food and he said it would be fine. We ordered a hamburger and a pork chop sandwich and my partner sat down with the dog on his lap while I went to wash up in the restroom. At this point, a third person ( JP, supposedly the manager) brought our food to our table (we were the only ones in the dining area at the time). He proceeded to berate my partner for bringing a dog into the establishment. Unfortunately, this action caused great distress for my partner, who informed me of the situation when I returned to the table. As my partner took the dog out to the car, I approached the counter and asked to see the person who delivered our food. He was off to the side in the back pretending to be on the phone and just yelled that service animals are not allowed (exactly the opposite of what the signs in the entrance said) and after I explained the two employees had told us it was fine he yelled that it didn't matter what the other 2 employees told us, service animals were not allowed in restaurants in Montana. I informed him of my intention of writing reviews regarding his rude and misguided behavior, and he gave me a thumbs up and a smirk. To the owner of Pork Chop Johns, I would suggest you either get a manager that knows what he is doing and knows how to treat customers and workers with respect and appreciation (the 2 workers rolled their eyes because of their bosses rude and childish behavior) or change his title from Manager to MisManager to better describe his performance and abilities (or lack of). I suspect JP's real name may be Dick. Second, as for the food, the hamburger my partner ordered went in the garbage after he lost his appetite, so I can't comment on it except for the fact that it was a wasted $9.00. My pork chop sandwich was not the way I remembered from the past. This time it was a dark grey, dry and mealy and more processed and thinner than I remember them to be. It was pretty much flavorless. Look around the parking lot and you will see license plates are from all over the country. Over 1,000 miles from home, 3 other cars had California plates. I'm proud that Californians from over 1,000 miles away know where to get a good sandwich. Standing behind the counter, a crew of teenagers making minimum wage is seen leafing lettuce, slicing tomatoes, creating pork chop goodness. Did I mention.. hand leafing lettuce? Hand slicing tomatoes, slicing just enough to keep the line moving. Not slicing 30 lbs and letting it sit for an hour, but just enough to keep things moving. That's what I call fresh. I was in line and there was an elderly lady in front. They helped us before her. Then she asked if she could order. While I was standing up there the lady asked one of the workers "Please dont touch my food without gloves" she asked very nice and the worker said in a very rude voice " I am not I am just putting these out" the older lady then just said "I just didnt want you to touch my food without glove" then the worker rudely exclaimed that if she didnt like it she could leave. So then the older lady's blood pressure went up and started crying. So what I am saying is that the service today June 20th at 4:25 PM the lady train a new guy made a woman cry because she was so rude. They almost lost my purchase as well. While driving through Montana it was clear that Pork Chop John's had to be a stop along the way. I entered to order lunch to-go. The line was quite short, which was surprising to me given the reputation. The girl at the counter was the worst part of this experience. She was clearly very overwhelmed by my order (2 pork chop sandwiches, onion rings, and an order of chicken tenders with fries). There was a lot of confusion and my entire order was wrong until another girl came out and fixed it. The food was okay. It left something to be desired. Butte is a proud, blue-collar town that is filled with long-standing traditions that will never die. On the short-list of these traditions, ones that must be done at least once while either visiting or residing in Butte, is to have a pork chop sandwich. The origins of the pork chop sandwich are vague and debated to this day. I, for one, subscribe to the thought that the origins can be found in Chicago approximately around the turn of the 19th century. It was here that an unknown individual realized that throwaway parts, such as the tongue (which really is a muscle and no different than others that are consumed) could be ground up with other cheap ingredients (such as onions, spices, or bread). Perhaps this same individual, or the individual to whom the product was sold, realized that they could fry it up for a cheap (and a bit bland) meal for someone on their way to a meat house. When you're poor and hungry, you'll each just about anything that's nourishing (don't think so? Look at the ingredients in "bargain" hotdogs). Jump forward to 1924, from the Windy City to The Richest Hill on Earth: Butte, Montana. The demand for copper is booming. There's plenty of jobs and plenty of money for all. In the middle of this mining metropolis is entrepreneur John Burklund, looking for a way to get a leg up on the fierce competition. What exactly happened is anyone's guess. But I would postulate that perhaps John was visiting a friend from Chicago, who introduced him to the fried, ground pork. While dining on this rather bland dish John probably realized two things: 1. Pork is cheap 2. There's a lot of room for improvement that he can do. A short time later, on the corner of Mercury and Main, John began selling his creation: the pork chop sandwich- an item consisting of a lightly-battered pork sirloin (as opposed to ground pork tongue) and fried, and served on a roll with pickles, onions and mustard. The population of Butte ate it up- literally! In 1932, using the profits earned from his lunch wagon, Mr. Burklund opened "Pork Chop John's" on Mercury Avenue, permanently anchoring the food and establishment into Butte's cultural history and tradition. It's been decades since John Burklund introduced his sandwich to the world. Butte's economy has seen better days. People have come and gone. Businesses have risen and fallen, and through it all, Pork Chop John's has remained like a lighthouse beacon. Mr. Burkland has passed on, and the business is now under the ownership of Ed Orizotti who knows that if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and hasn't changed the menu or preparation (other than to meet expected modernization and sanitary standards). Everything is practically the same as when John Burklund was in charge, whom would no doubt be proud to see his business carrying on such a beloved tradition. I would not be one bit surprised if the rapture happened, and at the last moment, Jesus said, "Just a second, I have to get an order at John's." So let's actually talk about the food, and what's the big deal anyway. Why is it that any born and bred Butte son or daughter will go straight to Pork Chop John's (or a pasty shop- but that's another article/review) within five minutes of their arrival in town? The best place to start is with the main, signature product: the pork chop sandwich. The meat is gristle, fat and a bone-free hunk of tenderized Montana-raised pork sirloin (the difference is quite noticeable when compared to a factory farm), that's been lightly breaded and battered so that the natural flavors of the pork interact with, but aren't overwhelmed by the spices, as opposed to, say, KFC. Add in pickles, mustard, onions, tomatoes and lettuce finished with a locally-baked bun and you have a sandwich that is unlike any other. The taste itself is difficult to describe, other than it's hearty, meaty, and slightly sweet; which is to be expected. However, the history and tradition definitely contribute to enhance the epicurean experience. I could go on listing the various reasons to make Pork Chop John's a regular stop in Butte. But here's one that should top them all: As a general rule, I don't eat pork products. I will though, whenever I'm in Butte, set aside this personal tenet in order to enjoy a meal at Pork Chop John's- I believe you should too. read more

Not all of the truly great reviews for restaurants can be found on Yelp. I worked with a graphic designer who hails from Montana. When I asked him where I should eat while driving through the state, his comment was that Pork Chop John's was a pretty good start. He then proceeded to tell me stories from his teen years about how his parents used Pork Chop John's as a reward to get him to do manual labor by helping drive cattle into the city and how his personal record for number of pork chop sandwiches consumed in one sitting was six. Who could refuse such a story? While roadtripping through Montana, I stopped and picked up one pork chop sandwich to-go with the works--mustard, onion, tomato, lettuce, pickle. I inhaled it so fast that I considered making an illegal freeway U-turn to head back to Butte and get another one. I'm not sure I could do six sandwiches, but I certainly can't wait for my next one when I drive through Montana again (sometime in 2015 probably). read more

I had high expectations for this place, coming here on my way from Seattle to Bozeman upon a recommendation from a friend. I don't consider myself to be a pork-chop lover (probably due to the memories I have from growing up with my Jew[ish] mother overcooking the bejesus out of them for my pork-loving father) but I had heard such good things I figured I'd give it a shot. Besides, who cares what kind of meat it is when it's deliciously fried and smothered in some sort of gravy? Well, that's what I had expected anyway. Instead, I sunk my teeth into an underwhelming but still standard fast-food delicious flash-frozen-then-reheated fried pork patty on a small white bun. Pretty much the McDonald's of pork-chop sandwiches, I have to admit. Not to say that it's a bad thing, just not what I had expected. But the price was right and for what it was, I have no complaints. What really blew me out of the water, though, was the fries!
