We stopped at Freeway Tavern during a road trip out west after hearing about their famous Wop Chop sandwich. I went with the classic battered and fried pork loin sandwich, and while it wasn't the best sandwich I've ever had, it was still pretty good, especially for the price. The whole place has an authentic dive bar feel that adds to the experience. Everything on the menu was very affordable, so it's hard to complain. Our waitress was quick, the food came out fast, and we were able to get back on the road without a long wait. It's a fun stop if you're passing through. read more

The Freeway is a hidden gem in Butte. Not much to look at, but that's half its nostalgia and charm. Always came here with my grandparents for a Whop Chop and a plate of wings. Delicious. The last 3 times I've been there ordered the mini steaks and all 3 times they were out. just ordered 2 wop chops with fries and they were out of fries and sub their joes and got maybe 10 joes between both meals. service was not good as well. You really need to stop eating at Arby's. They may have the meats but these guys have the Wop Chop. The Wop Chop is a really unique twist on a pork sandwich. The chop is tenderized and deep fried to a golden crisp. The chop is then placed on a simple but tasty bun with sliced onions and a couple pickle slices. Pair the burger with a can of local IPA from Draught Works based in Missoula. The IPA has a crisp bite with a smooth finish. Really good job, guys. The Wop Chop comes without cheese. Trust me, you don't need any. Add some mayo with their horseradish sauce the result will be a super tasty sandwich that isn't greasy nor masked by the cheese. Let those flavours sing! Skip the homemade fries. They are crispy and definitely a solid choice. Instead, get the Jo-Jos fries. Essentially, homemade potato wedges served with a side of sour cream. I first heard about this place years ago from the Man VS Food episode when he went to Butte. Since then I made it a point to get a Whop Chop whenever I go through Butte. Before the show I never even heard of a whop chop. Since my first one, I have been hooked. The combo of pork, onion, pickles and mustard work perfectly together. The Freeway Tavern is a dive bar, no question about it, and the service can be a little rough. It is worth a visit for the whop chop. I have never had anything else there but that. Their location is right off the highway, so it is easy to get to and then back on I90. Worth a visit for the whop chop for sure. read more

It's a cryin' shame they were CLOSED all weekend long, without notice or explanation. I suppose it was due to Labor Day, but really now! I was going to introduce a friend to the Wop Chop and the Fried Chicken, as I've loved both for many years. I was unable and thoroughly disappointed. I'm quite sure they are still excellent and only wish we could have had some. It should be noted that other kitchens and bars in Butte were busier than normal all weekend long. They were also amazed that the Freeway was locked up while revenue was flowing strongly all over town. It really hurt. But we'll try again next year I guess. read more

The Freeway I've known for years and years is long gone. When you walk in you're assaulted with the stench of potpourri. The service is not reliable as it seems someone different is cooking or serving every time you go in. Now -let's get to the Wop Chop - this is the reason for the Freeway's existence - but what they're serving is a sad, pathetic imposter of Muzzy's famous sandwich. Muzzy, and later Jolene's Wop Chops were the real deal, worthy of their accolades. The current rendition Kathy's serving up are worthy only of the trash can. Not even close. And they're severely over priced with the prices slyly not listed on the board. Save your time, and money. If you were lucky enough to enjoy a Wop Chop of the past - savor the precious memory - don't replace it with a bad one. The only thing left of the Freeway I've loved forever is the name. I'll miss the place I remember and avoid the joint that exists now. read more

When in Butte you gotta try their pork chop sandwich. We went to Freeway cuz of the reviews and when I asked a couple locals they also pointed me to Freeway. Get the whop chop and ask for extra mayo. SO good!!! My hubby got the fried chicken. Chicken was perfectly cooked and so crispy plus juicy inside. It didn't have too much flavour though. They have a list of sauces on their board so we asked for BBQ sauce to dip in. It was pretty good. If u get the chicken I recommend u ask for sauce. Fries were also very good. What a surprise this place was! We stopped for gas in Butte and were hungry. Spotted this place across the street. It looked divey but had ads about their famous "Wop Chop" sandwich. We had to try it. We were both bowled over! It was awesome! Homer Simpson would love this! It was also a hangout for Evil Knieval who was best friends with the owner. One of my absolute favorite places in Butte! This is the exact thing you want from a "dive"- laidback and casual but super clean. Cool local decor and nostalgic pictures. It feels like a real family owned legacy and the owner is so nice and attentive. They've got a huge drink selection. I am a huge beer drinker and was pleasantly surprised by all of the options. Do not skip the Wop Chop! Best dang pork chop sandwich in town. It's thick and the sandwich is more than enough to fill anyone up including my friend who can eat a lot! This is a very busy place. The service was good. The food was typical diner food. A bit greasy for our tastes, but tasty nonetheless. They only accept cash so be aware of that. Their food prices are very reasonable. If you're looking for a one of a kind diner with typical greasy food and small menu, look no further. Neat place to stop in on our roadtrip. This is not fine dining but it's a fine experience. The tavern is ugly, it's full of character and it is all Butte. The deep fried pork chop sandwiches are a special experience. They are tender and really good. And yes, the hot mustard is good but will put hair on the chest of a ten year old.
