Last night we had a wonderful meal and service. Our group enjoyed the clam appetizer, delicious, salad with raspberry vinaigrette that was so flavorful and beautiful, and beef Wellington! Looking for a healthier meal while traveling, this spot was perfect. Salad bar, soups, light sandwich options and more. One staff member assisted all guests who came and went during our visit. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time and was very good. Plenty of meat and cheese on my sandwich. Side salad was a fresh mix of greens, thin slices of cucumber without the seeds, cherry tomatoes and a sprinkle of seeds. The balsamic dressing is excellent. My SO ordered a tuna melt with chips and he was given four options of chips. Nice. They also have pasta salad or upgrade to side garden salad or soup, or add one for a bigger meal. The waitress was friendly and kept an eye on us. Food is fresh and tasty. Everything is clean. Restrooms in back. Art on the walls is for sale. On street parking is free. Highly recommend. read more

I came across this place one day while looking for a lunch spot here in Butte and decided to give it a try, well I have been coming here ever since! First off it's local, it's a small business, and they have a great variety of offerings for lunch or dinner. Today was a tuna melt day! This might be my favorite sandwich so far that they offer here. Their tuna is as close as I can remember my mom making when I was a kid, adding in the croissant was a great idea and the texture?!?! Excellent addition. I suggest getting the sandwich as is. You're welcome! Foot traffic was low today but the service was excellent as always, our server Clarissa said she was new but her warm smile and great attitude made her feel like an old pro. In the last couple years the Uptown cafe has transitioned into a lunch spot, but when I first got here it was a decadent dinner menu. My mom surprised me one year for Easter and I had Beef Wellington for the first time there, something I had dreamed about eating for a long time. It was so flakey, tender and flavorful, it lives in my mind rent free. They had baked clams and an awesome Alfredo, I think I may have even had mussels there. I'm not too familiar with the lunch set up but I'll have to stop by soon and check it out. read more

Service was completely inadequate, never returned to our table once after the food came. Food was almost completely inedible. Clams Maison were the only decent part of the dinner. I told the server the food was unacceptable and was so bad I couldn't eat it. My guest left most of his food as well. It took forever to get the check, and yes... I paid the full amount for which I didn't eat the scallops provencal or very few bites of the chicken Arthur. Soup was watery and bland. The food had no taste, so be prepared to add plenty of salt if you chose to eat any dish. Don't waste your money dining here. I remained kind, as its not the servers fault, but seriously if someone leaves all of the main dish and says NO to a take home carton, wouldn't you adjust the bill? I wish I had remembered to take a picture. I used to frequent the old UC because it was the Best food in Butte. Im sorry its quality is not even close anymore. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. Don't let the pictures of the good fool you. read more

I'd heard this was Butte's finest dining, and it's certainly detailed and elaborate service, without being at all snooty. A regular dinner is five courses - soup, appetizer, salad, main and a side served with it - it's the kind of place where they keep a discreet eye and bring the next course when you're done with the previous one. They proudly keep Beef Wellington on the menu - they're not ashamed to have an old-fashioned dish - which I ordered precisely because it's hard to find. It consisted of a hunk of lean and tender meat in a full shell of pastry over pate. The pastry was crisp and not glutinous even when soaked in meat juice. The plate was drizzled with hollandaise sauce, a nice touch. Excellent as the meal all was, the most outstanding course was the salad, greens with orange slices, toasted almonds, fragments of bell pepper, and a citrus vinegarette dressing. It was one of those concoctions where the taste of the varied ingredients together was a whole level above each separately. We stopped by for lunch. We were a little surprised by the cafeteria style way they handle lunch and almost left. I am so glad we didn't. They offer 2 prepared specialties and a variety of salads. My husband had a roast beef sandwich on a croissant and a Waldorf salad. He thought they were both amazing. I chose a salad and in spite of being prepared, was very fresh and tasty. The icing on the cake was the Whoopie Pie. It was the freshest, most delicious Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Sandwich, with cream cheese frosting in the middle. I cannot stress enough how AMAZING this thing was. It is seriously the best thing I've ever eaten! Everything was spot on. Came here based on location to our hotel and the great reviews. We went on a Saturday night without reservations, which seems like a mistake here. However, they expertly worked us in without delay. All of the wait staff was excellent. From the kid bussing the tables to our server, all were first rate. This was noticeable. Impressed. Food was good, but not spectacular. We had the Filet Mignon, which to our surprise was a four course meal. The presentation was great. Daughter had the Fettuccine Alfredo. The taste was good for all meals, but not memorable to any in our party. Desert was a disappointment. Mine was still partially frozen. Wine list was nicely rounded and larger than I expected. Prices were very fair. While not living up to the hype I had heard from this place, I would definitely return with recalibrated expectations. read more

It's a Sunday night in Butte, before the festivals start up. A few ghosts drift across the streets, a few cars roll by, the sky stays bright until 9pm. Inside the Uptown Cafe the walls are bright with guitars and art, white tablecloths deck the tables. We were last here in 2004 - per-Yelp - and the decor and food feel just right for 2013. They've been here for almost 30 years but their cooking changes with the times. In February they started their heirloom tomatoes in a greenhouse and by early July they're using them in a bright acidic fresh salsa that goes with delicately panfried sole. It's a special - one of about 7 - and the flavors are nothing the ghost miners would recognize. The cooper barons might, though! A 4 course dinner has a choice of soup (turkey was a tad heavy for a warm summer night, though fresh and toothsome), claims maison (hot clams cooked with seasoned breaking), entree, and veggies or pasta. The wine selection was quite good, service was attentive, and the chocolate mousse was thick and dense and chocolatey. We walked lit and drove up to one of the old head frames, outlined in red lights, and watched the clouds turn pink and orange and blue into the night. A good night in Butte. read more

Not so great. As we were being seated, an older couple was venting profanities at staff after what was obviously dissatisfying experience. Our meal...we were brought the wrong salad but no one came back to check until the main course was being served. Our entrees...salmon and scallop dishes were very meh...ordered creme brulee for dessert and left half of it in the dish....which I've never done. Absolutely wish we'd spent our money elsewhere. Can I give this place 1,000 stars? I was traveling through Butte last week and ate at the Uptown. Good food -- it is buffet style with a limited menu for lunch. Would really like to try dinner there (they have a fine dining "experience" with a larger menu for dinner). I forgot my felt hat at my table. Didn't realize that it was missing until I was over 100 miles away. I called them, and the nice lady on the phone took my address, mailed me my hat AND INCLUDED A YUMMY COOKIE IN THE BOX. Kinda sorry to be writing this but I left my phone number on the check hoping to speak to someone in person about my dinner there. It's been a week and no call, so here's my experience. A friend of mine came to visit Butte for the 1st time so I thought I'd show her some of the nicer things in town. We had reservations for 6:30 and arrived on time. We were seated fairly quickly and gave the waiter a cocktail order while we looked at the menu. Our cocktails arrived in short order and were well made. My friend had a Lemon-drop martini and I had a vodka martini. The Lemon-drop was very good, light sugar coating on the rim with a fancy lemon garnish. My martini had 2 olives and was how I like them. Now the wheels begin to fall off. While waiting for our appetizer, I was finally able to flag down a waiter to order another round of cocktails. When they came, they were served in the original glasses. Also, they were noticeably shorter than the originals. My friends was now garnished with a chunky slice of lemon and mine had the same single olive I had left in the glass. When I was able to get the waiters attention to point this out, he denied that this had happened but offered to comp the drinks. When he asked if this would satisfy us, I said no, we just wanted fresh drinks. When he returned with our new drinks, the lemon-drop had way too much sugar on the rim and and I think I received the same single olive back in mine. The pacing of the meal was sporadic at best. The appetizers we ordered came 15 minutes apart and is was an hour from when we ordered before we were served the main course. My friend had the filet of sole which was good and I had the artichoke ravioli which had too much oil for my taste. My feeling is that the problems we had were from poor management. The servers were somewhat apologetic and I did tip them 20%. The restaurant did fill up and service from what I could see from the tables around us slowed down. I would expect someone from management to circulate around and do a little glad-handing making sure everyone felt like they were being attended to. All in all, a negative experience and was disappointed no one made the effort to contact me this past week. So a negative review. read more

We're not from Butte so it was hard for us to pin down a good place with good food. We're sure that there are great places in Butte... but where?? No worries. A guy named Jim from the Front Street Market referred us to Uptown for dinner. It's a great little place in Uptown Butte open for lunch and Dinner. I got the special of the day which was chicken and red peppers placed over bow tie pasta and white wine sauce. My boyfriend had the Chicken Arthur. Mmmmm! Most tender and moist chicken you will EVER eat! With the entrees, you get a good set of pre-courses including soup, calm maison (delicious!) and salad (Get the mixed greens: spring mix, almonds, fennel, strawberries in a creamy raspberry dressing? Um, HELLO?!). We had the Chamblis House Wine. Most excellent white wine if you enjoy something on the sweeter spectrum. We went twice because we were so impressed. The staff are very friendly and enthusiastic. You know? like they kinda actually WANT to work their. The atmopshere is really nice too! Their restaurant is decorated by local artists with their work for sale (Great idea if you're looking for a tourist souvenier). The pricing is well valued for what you get. I think for the locals it would be considered pricey but this is what we Calgarians pay for a meal at home and we don't even get cool little pre-courses. We were on the road on a Wednesday night looking for someplace open in Butte that wasn't fast food. I suppose I should have read a little closer to see this is slightly more upscale than "in my grimy traveling clothes" but the staff was really nice anyways. When we realized the meals were 4 courses we cancelled our appetizer and glad we did! We were both full after dinner. I skipped the clam appetizer. It was kind of a crab cake style thing in a clam shell, husband enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was tasty but I wouldn't have wanted more than a bite. Salads and soup were both good, I really liked my potato soup! For the main course husband had the chicken piccata. We both really wanted noodles with this one. He did get the noodles as a side, but didn't want to mix sauces. The sauce on the noodles was okay - I liked it more, hubby felt like it tasted like jar sauce. I had the pork chop. YUM! If we're ever on the road in Butte again at lunch, since lunch is more casual here, we will definitely stop in! read more

My husband and I had a really great meal here. The prices were reasonable and the food was plentiful. We were a little worried about being seated in the front window, right by the door, but the atmosphere and layout were such that we still felt like we had privacy. It was very relaxed, and we did not feel neglected or rushed. The staff worked together to make sure we had everything we needed, but they never hovered or bothered us. Their timing was fantastic. When we we ordered an appetizer, the waiter made sure to let us know that our 4 course dinner choices could include that appetizer as one of the courses. We greatly appreciated that. We chose the blackened sole and the duck breast, and both were excellent. We also chose clam chowder, mixed greens salad and clams maison. Our waiter did return to tell us they were out of the chowder, so we tried the barley mushroom soup. It turned out to a bit tasteless, but the salads and clams were wonderful. They also had a fairly decent assortment of wine and beer, and a limited amount of hard liquor. It really was a relaxing, enjoyable evening; we will return. read more

I'm visiting Butte for the week, and decided to stop here for dinner last night. The decor was welcoming, and personally I appreciate restaraunts that feature what one wouldn't classify as "restaraunt art." Uptown Cafe fit the bill. I had the fettuccine alfredo, which was watery. The sole florentine was good, as was the clam chowder (which, I'll admit, I was a little apprehensive to try. I can be a little snobbish about eating seafood that comes from a place that doesn't seem like it knows what it is.) But I was wrong! It was actually much better than I thought, and apparently it comes straight from Alaska. Consider me schooled. The service was friendly, at times a little inattentive. The price was very reasonable. With some subtle changes, I would come here again. read more

If this were any other city, I might be giving three stars but it seems that there's so little fine dining in Butte so any attempt to do a good job should be rewarded. And they did do a good job. Hence four stars. (And you know how grudgingly I award stars.) It's a nicely designed space in Old Town, just a short skip off the freeway. Easy, dark colors, well lit, not too noisy, and helpful staff. I ate early, catching the Old People menu. Which was fine. I had a great simple mixed greens salad w/ almonds & a raspberry dressing (can it be?), and the sole, baked in parchment paper. A couple of quibbles -- first, the veggies it was baked with were limited in scope and number. I wanted a bit more. Second, the serving size of the (really nicely cooked) sole was too big, perhaps inadvertently emphasized by the small amount of the veggies. Next time I'm passing Butte, I'll seek out Uptown Cafe. Food was excellent, but very disappointed in the service from Dylan. Took almost 20 minutes to be greeted, then another 20 minutes to get our cocktails. Our DD was drinking water and he never filled her glass. We gave her our glasses of water. He never brought our 2nd round of drinks I had to go find someone else to get them for us. The food here is excellent! I was in Butte for a week long work trip and heard that this was a great place to eat so I ended up having lunch at Uptown Cafe two days in a row. Lunch was cafeteria style, self-serve salad bar and a couple of main course offerings. The salad bar was great with fresh ingredients and plenty of choices. I loved the ranch dressing! The main courses I had were Chicken Piccata one day and Chicken & Artichokes the next day. Both were amazing. Both dishes were chicken breast that was not only flavorful, but juicy and tender as well. Each dish had it's own unique taste and flavor profile that I thought was amazing. The sides I had were potato salad and a wild rice salad and again, both were wonderful. Even though I've had potato salad before and wild rice before, these dishes were different, memorable, and unlike anything I have had before. I was also lucky enough to be visiting during the "Blarney Stone" season so I got to partake in this local favorite, white cake with buttercream frosting and coated with crushed peanuts... Delicious! My only regret from this week long trip was that I didn't have dinner here... I should have and if I ever visit again, I will! read more
