Based on the quantity and quality of food you get, I'd say prices are reasonable. The Hungarian soup is a winner and gives one a great first impression. I had the Chicken and Shrimp Saute, which was slightly below average, but everything else made the overall meal pretty good. I tried my spouse's entree, being the Shrimp Stuffed with Crab, which was excellent. I was jealous. We shared the White Mousse Pie and I really should have had one piece for myself because we devoured it. The size was adequate but it tasted like more. Our server was very attentive but unfortunately, seemed a little awkward. He just might not be a naturally outgoing guy. He did a good job nonetheless. The restaurant itself is casual classy. You may feel slightly under-dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, but the servers wear t-shirts and dress pants, so what the heck. Wear what you will. Where the til is situated is not ideal, as you definitely are in the way of staff. Moving the til to the front door would be nice, even if it sacrifices a few tables. Uptown Cafe is the only restaurant I visited while in Butte, but it was recommended by a local and seems to be a no-fail choice for dinner. read more

Very good food. We also went early, right when they opened and brought our young daughter (10 months) they were extremely accommodating for us and her. Our waitress was prompt and taking our order and getting our food out quickly. She even brought out a small things of mashed potatoes for the baby. The food was amazing. Delicious beyond belief. Had a tremendous dinner here last night! The service was excellent, the setting romantic and my girlfriend and I loved everything about this gem. My blackened sole was delicious, not even sure what the wonderful sauce on it was - but it complemented the fish extremely well. French onion soup was perfect on a blustery day and my girlfriend had the shrimp Diane, which she adored. I was very glad she shared some bites. This was a really good place to get a meal in Butte Montana. I loved that the meal came with bread, soup and salad. The portions were fairly small, so the amount of food was not overwhelming and I had room for dessert. I got the stuffed shrimp and I really enjoyed it. For dessert I had some sort of frozen peanut butter mousse cake. It was really good, as well. The price is very reasonable for all the food you get. Dessert is not included in the price of the main meal, but the bill was still very low compared to most fine dining restaurants. read more

Passing from Yellowstone to Glacier NP we stopped half way to stay in Butte Montana. At The Finlen, our hotel clerk recommended this nearby restaurant to us and gave us a promotion free glasses of wine. We anticipated a small glass of table wine but received a nice pour of premium Pino Noir. The food was more than excellent! I would have to honestly say that this was one of the best culinary quality dinners for an incredible value ever! They offer a four course dinner that is included in the price of an entree! We both chose the Tomato and Citron Soup which was a delight to the palate. Not overly acidic with smooth blended flavors. Next course, two stuffed Clams each which were served fresh at a perfect temperature from the oven. Third, The house salad was mixed fresh green and purple lettuce with sliced cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. All veggies were crisp and the homemade Huckleberry Vinaigrette dressing was a tasty compliment. The forth and main courses were the most outstanding. I had Duck Breast with Huckleberry Demi-Glacé pan seared and sliced Yukon Gold Potatoes garnished with broccoli greens. My wife chose Chicken Saltimbocca with a Penne Pasta. Each item was perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious! For dessert we barely managed to share a piece of cake. All of this came to a grand bargain of $46! Granted we had a wine promotion gift but did order additional refills. I would have expected to pay at least double for the quantity and quality of food. In my hometown, New York, it would be at least quadruple. We were never rushed and spent the entire evening enjoying our meal. Several parties for special occasions and dates clearly were enjoying themselves. The waiter apologized for not serving quickly enough but the pace was perfect for a Thanksgiving type banquet. We left a greater percentage tip than customary. I would highly recommend the Uptown Cafe for anyone wishing to enjoy a delicious meal. read more

I have only eaten here for lunch, and it is always fantastic. I love their changing menu, they always have a few unique and delicious options at their lunch "buffet" - they serve the food for you, but it is presented in a buffet style - and they always have a great salad bar (which is currently pre-packaged salads, but still great!) We showed up without reservations and waited at least 5 minutes until we had to ask for help because none acknowledged us at all, it was really uncomfortable and confussing. We came back an hour later hoping that the food is better than the service , and we then stood there again unil someone finally helped us and was seated. We then waited 9 minutes until our waitress rushed over to see if we "wanted anything", she kept clicking her pin as to hurry us up. She brought us frozen bread and we had to WAIT again to get warm ones. It was about almost an hour before we were served our salads and I had to ask for our waitress so we could get more drinks because she was not attentive. To make matters worse there was a switch in wait staff waiting on us, what I mean is we first had a girl waiting on us and then a man without any explanation. It was not a good first experience and we did drive an hour to get there for our anniversary . I will say the food was really good and tasty, but the service was the worst...guess we won't go back we were dissatisfied. read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Butte, especially if you're looking for something a little more upscale than the usual. They have a great lunch bar, and people or groups can order lunches from them for pick up or delivery. The four course meal for dinner is perfect. Their soups are consistently good, and you have a choice of two different kinds. The clams maison is excellent, especially with some fresh lemon squeezed on top. I recommend going with their mixed green salad with the house dressing (whatever it is at the time). I have never been disappointed. My personal favorite meal is the Filet Uptown. You get two filets and mashed potatoes. The sauce on the filet is a perfect compliment to the meat. You also get a choice of sides, and I have to say that I really enjoy the squash with cranberry. read more

On the side was snap peas in a beurre reduction (have to make butter sound good), and they threw in an excellent mushroom soup starter. Went in tonight for dinner and it was delicious. We decided that since each entree came with so many sides/appetizers/courses we would share an entree. They let you do that and double up on the other things for an added fee. We shared the quail and had two delicious soups, an amazing clam appetizer, warm bread, salads and a side of fresh snap peas. I always feel cultured when I eat at the Uptown Cafe. It is svelte; the interior is sparse and chic, black and white, and decorated with a rotating collection of local art. And the food? The food is awesome. Of course, their lunch is unbeatable. Even better, though, is dinner. My favorite spot is a table for two, underneath the sign, sharing Clams Maison (delicious, creamy clams, baked into a scallop shell), Beef Wellington or a special, wine and always a pecan ball for dessert. After me and my wife moved to Butte for a few months we had a fairly tough time finding a really good place to eat. She's from here originally but doesn't usually branch out to new places without encouragement and so wasn't much help :). After trying most of the places she was familiar with I was beginning to despair to finding a good restaurant that wasn't just a steak house (nothing wrong with steak but sometimes you want something different). Finally my parents visited and suggested this place as they had been here before. Going by the name I figured it would be like a sandwich place or something but boy was I (pleasantly) surprised! First off the atmosphere is very nice, a lot of places in Butte tend to go with a more "old fashioned" theme, and although this place does tend that way as well it doesn't feel like a museum. The wait staff has been very nice each time we have gone and I never felt like we were waiting too long for service. As far as attire you could pretty much wear what ever you want. One would feel just as comfortable in jeans and a button up shirt as they would in a suit or dress. Well on to the food and drink. We have been two times and I must say I have been very impressed each time. As far as drinks go they have the usual full bar so you can get pretty much anything you want. I usually go with a Gin and Tonic or Martini and have no complaints (could always be stronger but that's usually the case ;) ). My wife ordered an Old Fashioned and both times it was made correctly (a surprisingly rare occurrence). Our first trip we had an appetizer that was goat cheese and heirloom cherry tomatoes from a local farm. Normally I dislike tomatoes but these were delicious. For an entree I had the beef wellington (rare) which was also very good and cooked perfectly. As far as our second visit we split a bottle of wine and had a few drinks so I can't quite recall what I had :), I do remember that it was equally tasty though. Oh and I almost forgot, dessert was just as good as the dinner. I had a vanilla bean creme brulee the first time and a chocolate mousse the second and even though not exactly original desserts they were still very good. According to the waiter all their desserts are made in the restaurant and not just frozen. All in all a couple great dinners and I honestly can't see myself going many other places in Butte for a nice dinner out. read more

My son chose to go to school at Montana Tech., came here based on Yelp reviews. So far we've been here twice and the food is pretty amazing. Dinner tends to be long because it comes with soup, salad a little clam or fresh fruit appetizer plus we still order starters, it's a 5 course meal 6 with desserts. We've ordered the beef Wellington, pork chop and Cajun prime rib which are all phenomenal. I couldn't make it to the dessert but saw next table ordering rum ball and creme brûlée. This place would be a gem anywhere let alone Butte, MT. Most of the entrees come with a cup of soup, a small order (2) of stuffed clams and a salad. Other apps are available as well, we tried the stuffed artichoke hearts and a tomato salad with ricotta cheese, both knockouts! The clam chowder was New England style and while a some different recipe than I have ever seen was still excellent. The entrees did not disappoint either. Smallish but adequate wine list and fairly priced. Two cocktails, bottle of wine, two apps and two entrees with tax and tip came to $120 which I thought was a bargain given all the food we had. They were a bit short staffed the night I was there as a waiter failed to show but they still gave great service in spite of that. read more

The menu on the yelp page for this restaurant is incorrect. We went in expecting kid-friendly fare, and were presented with something entirely different. Asked the waitress about it, and she said that yelp only listed the daytime menu. Talked to the maitre 'd about it, and showed him the yelp page, and he said he'd never seen that menu before. Hidden gem of butte. Packed always make reservations if you are coming after 6:00. Best food ever drove from west Yellowstone all the way to butte just to eat here. Dinner is 4 course meal wow and lunch is semi cafeteria style which is strange at first but four star food. Dinner transforms into a scene from the 1920 everyone drinking wine and fancy table cloths. It is a must to come here we are from Las Vegas were 5 stars restaurant are every where and this is a small wonderful diamond in the ruff. Also they have tons of Gluten free choices or the chef will make them Gluten free for you wow it is just a great place :)). read more

This rating reflects the total experience. Great food -- lacking in service. A group of 5 of us made reservations and were seated when there were only 2 other tables of diners. Our server must have been new, as she took drink orders, brought them, took our dinner orders and never returned. Other diners came in, ordered, got there food and left. We were still waiting. Another waiter finally realized that we were less than happy and stopped by to find out what was up. Seems our orders were never turned in -- even tho we were told the 'kitchen is backed up.' To his credit, he did comp another round of drinks and did his best to save the evening. The food was great -- although the clams casino are rather soggy and not too impressive. The main courses were excellent....and well worth the visit. Will go again -- it's a great spot in Butte, in spite of the problems we had. I really loved the Chili here. It was just right. Cesar salad was in a good quality but I didn't fall in love with thier dressing. It was just okay. Really outstanding. I had the duck breast. In New York or Los Angeles you'd be lucky to get a meal of this quality. Especially surprising because downtown Butte seems to be struggling to find itself; there are empty storefronts and whole buildings that seem to be vacant. Liked it a lot. I got one of the many specials which was Wienerschnitzel. It was okay, kind of soggy crust. My wife got some steak which was great. The meal was four course, I loved that. We got some great soup (beer cheese?) a salad, some clam things and the main course. I did not like their beer selection that much but it wasn't terrible. They do not have beer on tap, only bottles. They do have a good wine selection. The atmosphere was nice, quiet and classy with some local photographic art on the wall. Great servers. For both of us it was $60.00, which I didn't think was too bad considering the upscale nature. We won't come here a lot but will definitely be back! read more

We had reservations at the restaurant and we were seated right away. There was a large event at the theater in town and it seemed like a majority of the people were trying to get in and out before the start of the show. I would warn anybody who is eating before a big show: If they are busy don't expect much. We were seated at 5:30 and assumed that would be an adequate amount of time to make it out by 8:00. Not at the Uptown Cafe. I think our waitress must have been doubling as the cook because we barely ever saw her. She visited our table five times and she disappeared into the back for large chunks of time. We did not order anything special nor did we have any special requests. We ordered the scallops and prime rib of pork. These both come out as a 4 course meal. Salad, clam, squash, and main. By the time the main portion of the meal came out we asked for the check at the same time because it was already pushing 7:30 and we feared we wouldn't see the waitress until 9 at the rate she was working. The scallops burned my mouth but the pork was lukewarm at best. I'm guessing they would have thrown my pork chop (basically what it was) back on the grill to warm it up but we had lost complete faith in them by this time. We shoved the food down and bolted out of there after waiting for my credit card to come back. I'm not entirely sure why it took over 10 minutes to run my card??? I'm sure some people have great food here and it probably is one of the nicer establishments to eat in Butte. Go earlier then you would expect if there is an event in town and be prepared for spotty service. read more

This is my first review and I feel this place deserved a different review than what I've seen on here. I believe the problem was that we chose this place for lunch based off of the dinner reviews. Now don't get me wrong. The staff here were very friendly and helped us understand what the deal was with how to go down the cafeteria lunch line. Although, we only had two options(a cold roast beef sandwich or a cheap stir fry). Our glasses of wine were only $3, but from the reviews it sounded like they had cocktails too, so that was a little disappointing. The part that ended up being the biggest disappointment was the price for the meal. $15 for a cold sandwich, cold rice salad and a small bowl of salad(where only cream based dressings were available). Overall, the three of us who came in from out of town, seemed quite deceived. It looks like a nice, white table cloth place to eat and drink at. Then, you get served cheap, not so good food that isn't priced cheap at all! We are very disappointed and will never plan on coming back to this place. read more

Wow! Where else are you going to find a 4 course meal for $18.95? Never mind the bang for the buck, the food here was outstanding! My meal began with a cup of Hungarian mushroom soup tasty enough to be a meal by itself. For the second course clams (can't remember what they called the preparation, but they were delicious). Third course was the salad. A home run with mixed greens, cucumber, sliced almonds, sliced strawberries (yep, strawberries) with a tarragon vinaigrette dressing, and for the main course a crusted filet of sole with steamed broccoli. I thought I was ready to leave until I saw the Pecan Ball dessert. A generous helping of French vanilla ice cream rolled in pecans, covered in hot fudge with heaps of whipped cream surrounding it. By the time I finished that I felt like I needed to confess to a priest, and I'm not Catholic! Bottom line is this: a meal like this in most cities would cost almost twice what I spent here, and I would have gladly paid it. This place has great atmosphere, easy parking on the street right in front and the staff could not have been any better. Very friendly and they knew exactly when to serve without "hovering". Who knew there was such great food in Butte! Don't pass this place by when you're here. read more

I called late tonight to make a Valentines Day reservation and the guy that answered said they were closed and the person that takes reservations was gone. He took my information so they could call me back. 5 minutes later he called back with a confirmation for me: he had called the off duty staff and arranged my reservation. He was the dishwasher. If the back room guys care this much about customer service; it says a lot about the organization. read more
