He's usually wearing a beanie and has a longer beard, and he is so incredibly kind and inviting. This is an excellent brewery. On our recent visit to Portland, we went to this location, the brewery taproom in the mixed industrial area at the east end of the Broadway Bridge. It is in a shared/mixed-use commercial space and has a nice modified industrial ambience to it with a mixture of comfortable seating inside plus some outside. The feel is comfortable and relaxed and it is often vey quiet, especially at off times. They make excellent beer overall, with a nice mix of styles, and they do old-fashioned open fermentation. I especially give them extra points for doing some British-style cask-conditioned real ales, include a dark mild and excellent English pale ale. I also like their unusual craft-brewed, open-fermented malt liquor, a rarity, and an example of how good that often-maligned style can be if done well. Service is good. It is very casual, at least once to the point of barely bothering to interact despite the lack of other customers, but overall it is good. This is a usual go-to place for us when in town. read more

Fun spot at Leftbank Annex to grab beer before a game! Highlights include parking lot across the street (paid) and array of fresh brews for $6 a pint. While a small place, there is plenty of seating inside both upstairs and down where you can sit and chat. The pale ale was fresh and perfectly hoppy as was the IPA. Surprised it wasn't super packed before the game, but was also happy to have somewhere to grab cheaper beers before heading into Moda. Highly recommend stopping in! read more

Upright makes great beers. Second location for this brewery in NE, another option besides N Broadway. They share the location with Junior's Coffee. Mix of indoor seating and great outdoor seating under cover and not but shaded in the later afternoons. Chaat Wallah also has a location here. Nice service, with the Upright beers they are known for- awesome saisons, barrel aged mixed fermentation beers, and pilsners, along with all of their other beers. Worth a visit. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Upright Brewing. The location is in a work building but the decor is very inspired considering - a lot of great references to jazz giants. The music theme carried through as there was a jazz record on when I arrived and a duo performed folk music for me. The beer is inspired - floral notes and ingredients in many of their brews, I loved the two pints I tried. If I lived in Portland I think Upright would be someplace I would come back to. I did my research before coming to Portland and found this as the closest brewery to my hotel. So as soon as I arrived and checked in I walked out there. It wasn't that easy to find. I went to it's mark on the map but some other place is there which doesn't look like any brewery I know. I walked around the block and found it on the other side. They serve no food but that wasn't a problem. I can drink here and eat somewhere else. I tried the oat stout and best bitter. What a really cool brewery! They have a wonderful patio and an excellent space inside with a roll up garage style door to provide an even better experience. Although, the upstairs seating was ridiculously hot. They really need to have some kind of fan going on the upper level because after being there for an hour, most of our party was sweating so much we stuck to the chairs when we went to leave. What about the beer? Considering this brewery was one that was recommended to us as specializing in sour beers, it was odd that the sour beers weren't more prominently featured on their draft list. In fact, it almost felt as if the sour beers were hidden and the only way to find them was to read the descriptions of all of the beers. However, all of the beers that we tasted were very good! The only reason I removed one star from the rating was that the food which was offered seemed to be a bit expensive. For example, two dollars for a bag of chips that you could probably get at the grocery store for $.75. Maybe if the chips had been served in a basket, it wouldn't have felt as if I could've walked down to the 7-Eleven and gotten the exact same thing. Plus, the chips were literally in a cardboard box above the fridge. That certainly did not match the overall upscale aesthetic of the establishment. The other slight complaint is about their merchandise. Basically, don't buy their T-shirts. While they have an incredibly cool design on the front, the shirt feels as if it is a combination blend of cotton and sandpaper. All things considered, this is definitely a spot we will stop by when we are in the area to have a beer. I can't really say that we would go out of our way to go here but it does the job. read more

I came here before a show at the Moda Center and was incredibly happy my friend chose this restaurant because we had a better selection of beers and they were less than half the price as what you pay at the Moda. I also ordered a slice of pizza (square pan and Chicago pan thick) for $5. That was a meal in itself! When my friends arrived (they were late) I headed downstairs with them so they could do a tasting. I opted for a glass of beer. I had the Primitivo Red, which had a hint of a floral taste and the Off Season IPA, which had a hint of fruit. They did flights of beers, of which I did not keep track. There is seating downstairs in the basement brewery tasting room, but if sunlight is your thing, grab a glass and take it back upstairs. If you are going to an event at the Moda Center, this is a less expensive alternative to Dr. Jack's - and just as good. read more

It has a decent selection of beer, but the bartender was disinterested and couldn't provide much of a recommendation beyond a take it or leave shrug and "all of them are good." The ambiance of the bar is like sitting in the lobby of an office building...because the bar is in fact located inside the lobby of an office building. Maybe this is the brewery admin HQ or maybe the rent was cheap? One way or the other it doesn't add much to the experience. Once you're there, there's nothing else to visit nearby, and since it's located in a strange one way triangle traffic pattern it's annoying to get to and annoying to leave from. If you don't actually work in the office building, I'd go to one of the many other options in the area. read more

I was hovering between four and five stars on this one but decided to bump it up to five. Upright's beer is just so creative and tastes so good! I have been here twice now. I was here in January of 2018 and had a fabulous Oyster Stout here. One of the best that I have had. At the time Upright only took cash. So you could not use a debit or credit card in the taproom at that time. Since then they have corrected that and they now take credit and debit cards (as of 2/2019). the beer I got this time was the Black Walnut Celebration Lager. That beer as well was excellent! As I was scrolling through Beer Advocate the creativity and promising beer doesn't stop with those two beers. They have a Smoked Cherrywood Beer that looks wonderful as well as a beer called "Donuts". Knowing of those two beer options are something they have made in the past this warrants a return trip without hesitation...in hopes of getting to try these as well. But I would not be too bent out of shape if they weren't. All of their beer is just so delightful. The taproom is kind of in an odd place but cool... it's in the basement of a building that has various tenants and you go down stairs and turns in order to get there but the signage is well placed so as long as you pay attention to those it's easy to reach. The taproom is on the small side but definitely manageable. The two times I've been here this brewery seems very popular and I hope they continue to be! read more

This Brewery is a very solid brewery! (As a side note, I like how the FAQ's on the website show the question "Is Upright going to expand any bigger?" And the answer published "No". I like that vibe, they are comfortable where they are in the Portland niche and they don't need to "sell out" and sell their recipes and yeast to big Bev companies to be considered "successful". I love this brewery, right where it is at! I have never had a beer that I don't like from there, over the years. I've stopped at Upright as part of a beer-bike crawl/tour and have fun memories of tasting different beers with a small group of friends. ANd, lately, it has been a consistent "pre-game" spot for us before going to Moda or Veteran's Memorial for a sporting event. ANd, I would speculate that you could get a pitcher of delicious, local, micro beer here for less cost than a pint of generic beer at the Colliseum. Similarly to what the other reviewers have said, this brewery does have an intimate "secret club" feel. When you walk down to the basement of the left bank annex building, it may feel like you happened upon a private party that you were-not-invited-to, but it is in-fact OPen to the public (during their hours of operation!). I love the overall feeling of the brewery, Although, as stated on their website that they are not planning on expanding and getting bigger; I feel that the brewery is growing and adapting. When, I first tried Upright Brewing it was mainly Saisons and variety of saison- beers. But, now they appear to be modified with Saisons, IPA's and even different wheat-beer varieties. It is a fun place to try different experimental beers, that you normally wouldn't get to taste anywhere else. The staff seem disinterested in the beer and the customers, seemingly viewing themselves as "servers" rather than interested representatives of the brewery. The venue is clean, but otherwise uninspired, and feels a bit like what would happen if you typed "hip west coast brewery " into an AI chatbot and asked it to draw an image. So the beer is okay, the service is okay, and the venue is just fine, but with so many other breweries in town, I'm not sure why you would choose to visit this one. read more

Came here on Sunday evening 2021-11-21 just prior to attending an event at Moda Center. Quite a few people had the same idea of drinking here rather than at Moda Center, so it was quite busy. There were only about a dozen tables or less, so it was challenging to find an empty table. Additionally, there was literally only one server behind the counter, so the line and wait got quite long. The gentleman behind the counter was nice and patient; the pressure of the long line did not appear to faze him whatsoever. He was quite deliberate in his pace. We ordered a couple of different beers each, and we enjoyed all of them. The ambiance of the small brewery was nice, comfortable, and modern. Restrooms were clean and require a key, which are hanging near the counter. Parking can be challenging during peak hours. read more

I'd heard about this place for some time but hadn't made it there. I decided to make a concerted effort the other day. It's a little hard to find, so definitely have your map app ready. I love the vibe of the place. The basement is cozy, has great music, and is pretty chill. Brent, who was the bartender that day, was super friendly and very knowledgeable. The farmhouse ale isn't my go-to style, but everything they made was delicious. All the beers were incredibly complex yet well-balanced. This brewery is in a kinda weird location and google had us turning into the back (not public parking). It's right near the moda center so I'm sure it gets super busy when there is a show but it was pretty quiet when we went. We tried the country time Weisse and NE weizen and both were great. The Weisse was exactly what I want in a sour and the weizen was really good too. They do a few beers in to-go can-growlers (unfortunately not the weisse) but we will definitely be back. They also have some snacks and 4 outdoor tables. Parking is a lot right in front or some pay to park spots in front. Also seemed like there was a tram stop right next to it as well. read more

Entering the building thru a deli and down a couple staircases in the bottom of a cool building was Upright Brewing. The journey to get to it was fun and if the sign was not on the sidewalk you would not know it was there.
