    a glass of beer

It's your basic tap house kind of like a hole In the wall. But the beer is good as always they have shuffleboard and pretty decent outside seating it's actually mostly outside seating. The German sausage place is across the parking lot that's where you get food. The server is very nice I've actually known her for a while so that was nice. Crazy to think I've lived in at John's all my life and I'm just now trying occidental it's a nice place to stop by for a quick beer.

    Refreshing beer at Occidental Brewing!

Occidental Brewing was a brewery Steven and I paid a visit to when we were in Portland in February to celebrate my birthday. Of course having craft beer is a great feature to the "big" day. First of all the location of this brewery is fantastic as it's in the area of Cathedral Park and just a short stroll from the brewery you get an excellent view of St. John's Bridge. The taproom itself is great too. It's spacious but on weekends it's a popular brewery and it can fill quite significantly here. In addition to the good sized space the taproom is very clean and sleek which is always a plus for me. Onto the beer... There were lots of choices to pick from here at Occidental but I went with their main pilsner. The beer had a good crisp and clean feature to it which made it very refreshing! They have a fee other pilsners as well but alas since we were on a tour of other breweries and Mcmenamins locations one beer is where we had to stop with here!

Tastiest and favorite by far, personally. What a treat to find , everytime I make the drive to Tualitin to buy some!!!!

Asked the beermiester @ New Seasons for a great Hefeweizen and he recommended "Occidental's". Bought some and our review is BEST HEFEWEIZEN EVER"!! Subtle, smooth, goes down so easy

Tasty beer, proximity to Cathedral Park, battleship winner, Chinese checkers loser, nice patio. Pilsner is good, kolsch is better. Wursthaus next time across the parking lot.

Caught up with a friend I haven't seen for months and I think I found one of my new favorite German bars in the area (watch out Prost!). The brews were refreshing and the bartender was amiable and open to questions we had about the menu. What can get better than good food, good company, and a view of St. John's near sunset!

Nice brewery! I went for their Oktoberfest celebration. They had some good beers, I had the kolsch. They have both a brewery and a restaurant. They had some food as well. I liked the sausage with sauerkraut and the pretzel was kind of disappointing, it was cold and tasted like it just came out of the bag. Overall, the beers were good, it was a good stop! Plus we got to take home a glass too!

It's hard to find a good Hefeweizen in Portland, land of the IPA's, but this place has an amazing one. The view and dog friendly patio is an added bonus.

This is a great little taproom with a super homey neighborhood vibe. We came by during Zwickelfest and they gave us a tour and some free tastes! If you're into german beers, you definitely need to stop by Occidental. They have a great selection of standard german beers that are really great examples of their style.

Came here because we were at cathedral park and this was close. Didn't know anything about it. Turns out it's more Germanish style beers, which I'm less fond of. That said, I really enjoyed the beer here and general atmosphere. Got a flight with the altbier, nw pilsner, b.a. lucubrator and forget the last. I personally liked the nw pilsner the most. Glad to have stopped by.

Their tap list is extensive but also includes non-standard options. We love to see non-alcoholic beers as well as gluten free beer, cider, cocktails, and other libations. The food menu is great too. There are several items that either come gluten free or can be modified to be. The servers are knowledgeable about the ingredients of the menu items and I feel confident and safe eating here when gluten free is a need for me. They can get pretty crowded, but have several seating options. It was nice out today so outdoor seating was even possible, though it looked like there was a wait. There are tvs in several spots that showcase local sports when possible. There is a kids area and you can sit close while the kids play. Everyone we come in contact with here from servers to hosts are super friendly and welcoming. The food is pretty good. This time around, we shared the garlic Parmesan fries and the chicken wings (buffalo and honey gojuchang sauces). The wings were smoked and moist with good flavor. The fries were alright. More of the aioli would have helped so maybe request extra sauce or get some on the side. The dessert menu has some non-traditional offerings. The highlight for me was the cheesecake. I was assured by a server one time that the chef creates a gluten free cheesecake that rotates on the seasonal dessert menu. The current offering is tiramisu. The coffee chocolate sauce is good and I appreciated the bonus chocolate chip biscotti. The actual cheesecake is decent and I would be excited to try other flavors in the future.

Great rooftop vibe and a fun place to hang out for an afternoon. We ordered a beer flight, and as someone who's had quite a few brewery flights and is pretty open-minded when it comes to beer, this one unfortunately missed the mark for me. Out of the 10 beers, only about 3 were somewhat enjoyable and around 4 were honestly undrinkable. Thankfully, the food redeemed things a bit. We got the pizza with artichoke hearts, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic, and basil. It was super flavorful and the dough was delicious, especially the crust. We also tried the catfish po' boy. It was a little salty, but the fish itself was cooked really well and the sauce was tasty. The spring mix salad with cranberries, slivered almonds, and feta was good too, though I personally would've liked a better toppings-to-lettuce ratio. Overall, I'd come back for the rooftop and food, but probably know to expect mediocre brews.

We ordered a salad and it took about 45 minutes to come out. Their kale Caesar was way better than I thought it would be for a bar! Very fresh with a delicious dressing. Simple with pepitas, kale and raddicio. Cheese and dressing. Their beers are some of my favorite from a local brewery. Their Cloud Mentality is a good choice for IPAs. The line gets long for the bar and there's no way to close your tab if you leave it open unless you're willing to wait in the line again to pay. If you don't do that you will be automatically charged 20% gratuity which is a good deal to not have to line up just to close out.

I am a big fan of the indoor/outdoor flow for the space, especially on nice weather afternoons like we have had recently. Outdoor seating is limited, so be prepared to sit inside. Interior seating is not the most comfortable, with former church bleachers that are quite bouncy or large and hard game of thrones-like high chairs. The team is super friendly and will send you to the food station or the bar depending on your needs, and, with the good quality Mexican cuisine on service, you'll want a taco or two. The brewery specializes in Hazy/IPAs, to come expecting to enjoy these PNW basics.
