I'm so sad to write this but times have changed and this place is a shell of itself. I lived in the neighborhood and came here at minimum weekly, and recently returned after having moved away. The brewpub: I came alone often and either had a great chat with the bartenders or I struck up conversations at the bar with strangers. People from the neighborhood but often people from across the country who came to experience the best brewpub in town. It was on many lists of best of, it was hopping, the patio dominated the intersection. This visit was a quiet late afternoon, notably different and no servers in sight. Which leads to... The food: I came for the nachos. I was bummed to learn that they closed their kitchen. They have another vendor using it which operates via QR code - scan, order, and pay (and tip?) before receiving your food. It's smashburgers and wings. I miss the nachos and the buffalo chicken. I miss the servers. I miss the buzz of a busy dining room. I miss actual service of a sit down restaurant. I don't resent them making changes but if I wanted a food cart experience I'd go to a food cart. And in general, I'm not interested in paying $16 for a burger, no fries, and no service. The beer: this is why you're here, right? Right?! Turns out I do still like the beer but not when it's divorced from the rest of the experience. I can get this beer at bars across Portland and in the grocery store - the special thing about it was the beer AND the brewpub. Also, it's summertime. Where is the Rainbows and Unicorns? Why does the grocery store have the classics and the pub itself does not? Having not been around to support this place I feel bad that I am reporting negatively on the changes. But I also feel like it's important to be real about what you're paying for and what makes your business attractive, and the now ubiquitous smash burger and indifferent service isn't it. However, these are still our hometown boys and a label we love, so FYI - it sounds like the real menu is still available at the Slabtown location for now. Unfortunately, our experience at Breakside Brewery on Dekum was pretty disappointing, mainly because of the lack of service. The QR code system makes the experience feel impersonal, and when we did need assistance, the service we received was not welcoming or helpful. We ordered Farmer and the Beast, and the interaction with the staff was frustrating. The guy with the long hair who delivered our food was flat-out rude. When we asked where the silverware was located, his response and attitude were just as rude. I understand that restaurants can be busy, and I'm not expecting special treatment, but basic courtesy and customer service should still be a priority. The food was one thing, but the overall experience was significantly hurt by the attitude of the staff and the lack of actual service. A good brewery and good food can only go so far when customers feel like they're an inconvenience for asking a simple question. We've been to the establishment plenty of times over the years - would recommend the NW location over this one. read more

I had the citrus salad which I recommend and it can be split, Breakside has fallen into the cult of QR codes for ordering, But at least for now you can order separately food and drink by separate food and drink walkup without QR. My wife and I were in Portland for a long weekend and my sister said this was a great place to get beer and food after our flight. The place is very close to the airport and we entered the cool looking brewery with lots of taps. I ordered an IPA, which was delicious. I ordered the Cubano, which you can never go wrong with and our server brought it over with a smile. Lots of meat piled high on the nice loaf of bread and it was real good. Went out with family tonight, the restaurant we went to originally, had a party and closed to the public. So we said hey, Breakside Brewery is just down the block! So we all walked. A cool corner establishment. We were greeted and directed to menus with a que r code to place an order. Sure beats the long line at the bar. So we found a nice table up stairs for underage to join. We all place our orders and the kitchen upstairs was quick to deliver. Food was great. We ordered the dirty fries, salads, Cheese Burgers and a Rueben Sand. Everything was delicious. Bar service was good! Always friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The wings were from Farmer and the Beast (recently installed as the food service). The wings were not up to par. Thinly sauced to the point where there was almost no taste. Tried two varieties of the sauces and they were almost indistinguishable, despite one being traditional buffalo and the other being a honey mustard BBQ sauce. Beers are okay, nothing to really come back for. As for the food, it is bad. We split the farm bird and the fries. Farm bird chicken was dry but extremely spicy. Breakside Brewery continues to never disappoint! We have been getting their beer for years and always enjoyed it! The latest two beers that we have had and were thrilled by was their White Wit beer. This biscuity flavored wit beer also has notes of coriander and orange brought together perfectly. Smooth and light in body this wit beer is a joy to drink like most wit beers usually are for me. The next beer was the Wanderlust IPA. An excellent IPA that has floral, fruity and hoppy flavor notes to the beer. Also smooth in body this IPA is fairly light and perfect to kick back with has the days start getting warmer and winter starts losing it's grip so much of us can indulge in our wanderlust. read more

Sat outside on the picnic benches in the warm summer air. Other than a few noisy cars, it was peaceful there. We enjoyed the easy QR-code drink & food ordering. The drinks and food came quickly from courtesy of the friendly wait staff. As usual, the beer was amazing, with a wide range of great IPAs to choose from. My Cuban pork sandwich hit the spot. So, here's the thing. Breakside has become an institution. People love it, flock to it, seem pretty much oblivious to its shortcomings. Yeah, there's lots of beer--and most of it pretty good. You can even order non-beer beverages. It's family friendly, which means there's almost alway an expensive designer stroller or jogging kid carrier blocking an aisle somewhere and the voices of exuberant kids who haven't been enculturated by their parents to the idea of public places as places where more polite behaviors and volumes are welcome. I say this as one who has raised two children so understand the challenges and opportunities. Breakside has developed a new, "modern" ordering system (which sadly seems the trend in more and more places) whereby we are expected to use our cell phones and scan up the menu. Place your order and wait. Meant to be simple, right? Unfortunately, the system sometimes doesn't work. Since they're using this tech approach to justify hiring less staff, you will have a hard time getting an overworked, stretched thin server's attention. When you finally do, you will be told to go to the bar to place an order in person. Whereupon, the equally slammed bartender now gets to assist you while managing the demands of the bar. Okay. You might call this a minor inconvenience. And for me (and maybe you), that may be true. But if you are a person with visual, auditory, sensory, or physical limitations, or if you are an elder who has done their time advocating and working for social justice or just to survive, this system sucks. It is not accessible. It serves to discriminate against roughly 18-20% of our society. By the way, the automatic tipping set up does not take into account that you are doing at least 1/3 of the service for your own meal. I'm a generous tipper. I've been a server many times. But expecting 22% tip when the only service provided was delivering the food might be a bit much. The food is predictable pub grub. Though they do have a nice option of ordering the grilled ahi without the bun. Maybe they do that for all of it. There was a time I took visitors from out of town to Breakside Dekum because it's walking distance from my home. But now, I find myself looking for different options. read more

Went to Breakside Brewing on Dekum after a 5 year hiatus. Found a beer I could enjoy and then looked at their menu. Wow, how times have changed. Their menu seems to have been obliterated. I'm presuming because of Covid. So I found the fish tacos which sounded amazing. I ordered them and out came these two fish tacos. The fish I could barely find. It was like a fish stick cut lengthwise in half and one half was in one taco and the other half in the other taco. Flavor was good minus the fish flavor that was missing. Also, almost every item that I saw served came in paper red and white baskets. What happened to real plates and such like you used to have? We're not at a food cart. I looked at menus of their other locations and they all seem pretty slim with the exception of the Astoria location and Slabtown. The staff was great and friendly though I was sitting at the bar. For a Saturday afternoon they weren't extremely busy but had a decent crowd. read more

There are a couple of locations for Breakside but I think the one on Dekum is my favorite. They make it really nice with ordering and paying through the QR code. I love to go here when it's nice out and sit outside. They allow dogs on there outdoor patio. The beer is always good. Food can be hit or miss and spendy for pub food. This brewery was recommended by a friend so glad that right now they have outdoor tables and even the indoor tables were spaced apart and all windows were open for good ventilation. During this time there are no menus and they will bring a sign with a QR code for your table which you can enter your card information and pay into directly from your phone. You can also keep your tab open or close out so minimal interaction other than the staff bringing your food to your table. Definitely recommend the pulled pork nachos ($20). Easy enough to share between two people and they stack it high! Plenty of toppings and they melt everything in the oven so everything blends well together. We also tried the cheeseburger with a side of fries (they looked so good from another table) was also super tasty. They charbroil the burger so you have a nice char flavor to switch it up and the fries were perfectly crispy. Nice aioli to get on the side if you also want to dip your fries into it. As for drinks we got passionfruit sour and the portland IPA would recommend both. Great fruity flavors but also light to enjoy on a sunny day! read more

I have to say this is the most touchless dinning I've experienced during this pandemic. First you pick an empty clean table, scan QR code, order drinks and food on your phone, and it comes to you. You can keep the tab open when you order, and close out bill on your phone. Also no need to download an app. I enjoyed the buffalo nacho and tasty adult beverages. The nachos had a good portion of veggies, which I was happy to see. Didn't feel too guilty eating. Though once I got to the middle the buffalo sauce was a bit much. Ease up on the sauce and it was otherwise great. As for beer I enjoyed the bee tea beer which is a smooth bold tasting rice beer. Next I has the ESB or English ale style beer that also had a good taste and was smooth. Overall, I was extremely happy and enjoyed the atmosphere. Love that they allow dogs and even have water bowls for your furry family member. I've been here a ton and never reviewed?!?! Over the past 13 years this is still our go to burger place in Portland. The burgers are well seasoned and juicy. We do tell them one level lower for doneness so I say medium even though I like it a bit more. I love both types of fries so I order the sweet potato waffle fries then I steal some of the regular waffle fries from my husband. Great that they can fully open the walls with the environment we are in. I'm not a fan of the new menu process on the table where you have to scan, order and pay online. We are tech savvy and could get the app and put all items in the cart and then it wouldn't process. A big waste of time and we still had to go up to the bar to put in our order. read more

While waiting for my brother-in-law's flight to land, my husky and I headed to Breakside Brewery. We found a spot outside, and service was great overall. I wish there was an easier way for dogs to get under the benches, though. Mine refused to step over. I ordered a beer and ahi burger. The burger and fries were ok, not very memorable. I liked the beer though and would probably come back for drinks if I was in the area. Love that the kitchen let me order a chicken breast for the dog. I'm always a fan of the open garage look of restaurants. For a weekday, it seemed pretty busy (with lots of dogs too!) so I guess that goes to show popularity. Great ambiance and friendly staff. I had the salted caramel stout and the OG Aztec. The stouts was good, but the Aztec was something else. First hints of orange and chocolate followed by peppers with a coffee finish. Came in a tulip since it's 9.5%, but totally worth it I had the cubano. The pork was pleasantly smoky and the pickled jalapeños added a nice kick. The ciabatta held up nicely for the amount of filling. Friend with me had vegetarian nachos that looked really tasty. If you're bored-to-tears of my "what took me so long!" theme of Portland businesses, I'm sorry, please move on. For the rest of y'all: WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG! Unlike many places that have popped up since I left Portland...this place was around when I lived there. And I had their beer. I knew it was good. No.Excuse. But I've righted my wrongs, and those same wrongs yelped me write this song. (did you just cringe? Cuz I did.) The beer here is awesome. They deserve the many, varied, and coveted awards they have one. IMHO the most notable is "Best IPA" at the Great American Beer Festival. The IPA category receives more entrants than any other and the tasting is BLIND. And these folks WON. Kudos! Everything else they brew is damn good too. I was really impressed with the fact that they also brewed quite a selection of lagers. Lagers that are so esoteric that anyone that's not a homebrewer (or German) would have never heard of! Can't comment on the food, but it looked above average. You come here for the beer though. Great neighborhood vibe and ambiance here.
