Although the bar was rather empty, service was slow but nice enough. We had to hunt down our server twice to ask him to explain our ciders. The ciders were good though.. we got to try ciders from 4 different countries. As they are a cider bar, I would definitely recommend coming here for their variety if you're a fan. This place is delicious! My girlfriends and I were looking for a place to have some appetizers and drinks and the SF resident in our group recommended Upcider. I now recommend it to anyone who visits the city. I had a blackberry pear cider which I ordered from their countless pages of different ciders. Went to this place to catch up with a friend that I had not seen in a while. The space itself is very minimal in design--almost like a basement room at a frat house. On this particular night, it was pretty cozy and there was a good amount of people as well. I enjoyed perusing the GIANT cider menu and liked the concept of the place but wish that they offered some more substantial dinner plates. I did enjoy my kale caesar salad, but would have loved to get something a bit more filling to enjoy with my cider. Upcider has a nice, classy feel and the prices aren't too harsh. My friends and I made our way over on a rainy SF evening, I took the 3 from Post at Kearny which drops you right across the street, so not a bad commute if you don't want to look for parking. Right on Polk next to Vertigo, and huge windows framed with twinkly lights. I thought the place was closed because it's in an upstairs locale, but I found my way into the clean, modern restaurant. I arrived early and ordered the Julian Black and Blue cider, per the server's recommendation. It was tart, sweet, lightly bubbly, served in a redwine glass, would abso-fruitly get again. When my friends arrived we ordered a few appetizers to go with our cider. Buffalo Fries: spicy! I love spicy food, so that was great for me, and my girls liked the heat, too. They are drizzled with blue cheese dressing and chopped carrots and celery so you get a nice little crunch. They cool off fast, so eat up, Buttercups! My favorite dish we got, and to think I wanted regular old garlic fries! Bacon Mac n' Cheese: hot, cheesy, salty, with baked breadcrumbs on top. Too many green onions for my taste, but still good. Creole Shrimp: nothing to really write home about, I probably would skip this next time and get a flatbread. It was just over cooked shrimp in a thick, creamy red sauce. But you can't win 'em all, kids. I got the Aspall English Demi-Sec as my final cider which was sweeter and less tart, very good, both of my friends liked it better than their ciders. Overall, I would definitely go back, it's a good spot for chatting with your friends about your old boyfriend or how much you hate your co-worker, or whatever, because it's not too loud or quiet, also good for a date if you're into that kind of thing. Beer and wine aren't really my thing but I love hard cider so when I discovered this place on yelp, I was super excited to go. However, I'm also really indecisive so it took me a while to read over the entire menu and finally decide on one. I was trying to go for a sweet cider I couldn't easily get in the store. I ended up with an Anthem Pear Cider (which I was kinda sad to realize later can be found in grocery stores). It was alright but I've had ones I liked better. Next time, I'm going to try the Ace Pineapple cider since I've had Ace before and really liked it but haven't seen the pineapple one in stores yet. My boyfriend got the ginger cider and was kinda sad at first that it came in a can haha. I don't like ginger so I didn't try it but he said it was definitely ginger-y. He didn't think it was that great though. We also got garlic fries which were good but nothing amazing. Next time I might try reaching out to the people at the bar because I would've liked to get some recommendations based on what I've tried and liked in the past. This place is NOT a happy hour spot. Hearing the hype about Upcider, I brought coworkers here ~6:30 and....it was completely EMPTY. Lame! The reason for my 3-star review is beyond this, however. There's nothing really to write home (or Yelp) about on this - it's a general, cute little bar thing with a huge cider list and a decent beer one. It's certainly a refreshing change from the other bars in the Polk / Tendernob area, but I'm not dying to go back. Don't get the cider flight - it's the worst ciders in the house, bundled. Really like this spot on Polk - one of the few reasons I will go out to Polk. It's a pleasant respite from the otherwise crazy drunkenness of the rest of the street. I've never seen a place with such a good cider selection - or for that matter any sort of serious cider collection. It feels like you're at a fancy winery and getting to try all the different varieties. The most interesting cider I've had here is the habanero cider - verrrry interesting with a serious kick to it. Huge Cider Menu! This was my first time trying cider, I absolutely loved it! Their snacks are delicious as well. Living in London, and not being a beer drinker, quickly got me into cider so I was excited when I saw this place opened. Pretty good list of ciders, wide range of prices, and what I had was all really good. The service was good, much better than expected after reading some of the reviews - our waitress came over frequently enough, our drinks and food came quickly, the guy who appeared to be the owner checked on us, so all in all, good. I felt like our waitress could have known a bit more about cider though. For most coming in, they're not going to know what to choose so the waitstaff should really be the experts on tastes, flavors, etc. I asked specific questions and I could tell the girl was trying, but couldn't give me a good description of any of them. Food-wise, we ordered the gruyere and spinach flatbread (good, but a bit heavy on the garlic), the chicken slider (really tasty) and the cajun shrimp which was 5 shrimp with a lot of sauce and crostini. Overall everything was pretty good and prices were decent, maybe the shrimp was a little over-priced. It would be great if they did happy hour specials too - maybe they do, we arrived about 6:45pm. overall a cool place, but they should definitely hype up the cider thing since it's what they're known for and have their waitstaff educate people on the differences. read more

I love love love cider, so was quite excited to come check out Upcider. I had a cider from Normandie (which, if you aren't familiar with French cider, dry to the point of perfection). The food was ok - had the portobello slider (too much blue cheese!!), zucchini cakes (these were delicious), and sweet potato fries (I've had better :\). Service was great, though a bit hovering and the ambiance was great. Like some one else had mentioned - great for people watching! Something I wish that they did have (though I completely understand the gastropub vibe that they're aiming for), are crepes! Something lighter than sliders would be great (since cider isn't too heavy), and crepes, the perfect "something extra" are normally paired with cider, so I would love to see crepes on their menu some day :). Gluten free heaven. I was visiting San Francisco with a few friends for a birthday weekend and being the one with Celiac disease I usually take charge of finding places to eat/drink so I'm not stuck with water and veggies. Upcider was an answer to prayer!!! Cider flights--um YES PLEASE! You could do a few tastes or all of them and see which ones you liked flights make cider tasting so much more fun because they're all so different! They also had this poached apple dessert yumminess that was gluten free and no one at the table missed gluten. We ate them so fast! Beyond the food and drink, the location is pretty awesome. It's on the second floor and on a corner so the Windows give a pano view of the street below and all the way up and down. I can't imagine what it's like during the day with the windows open! I really, really wanted to like this place. It was recommended by a friend of a very good friend of mine... However, I doubt I'll find myself visiting again any time soon. As others have commented, the service here is EXTREMELY SLOW. I went with my husband on Saturday night. It was not very busy at the restaurant. It took about 15 minutes after we sat down before anyone came to take our order. We ordered a 500 mL bottle of cider for... $18. It took close to 15 more minutes for the cider to come. The waitress told us she had been busy taking 3 other orders, when actually we could see her chatting with friends nearby. When we asked where the cider was from, we were told "Portland." The waitress wandered off without saying anything else. One look at the back of the bottle, and we notice it says "Product of Sonoma County." Eventually, after about 5 minutes, the waitress came back to tell us it was indeed from Sonoma. Way to know about what you're selling. We waited close to another 20 minutes to order another round of drinks, with my husband growing more and more annoyed as the waitress continued to chat with her friends. When she finally came to ask us what else we wanted, we told her "we are out of time, we need the check," which took another 5 minutes to come. Hidden gem on Polk Street! Highlights: Habanero Cider .... 'nuff said! They have a great second story venue looking over Polk Street that is very spacious and open. I went on a Friday evening and we were able to get a table right away. They have an extensive three page Cider menu--I didn't even look at the beer and wine list (but they have that too)! The servers are very knowledgeable about the ciders and gave us recommendations. The food was delicious and arrived very quickly after ordering! The servings sizes are on the smaller side. I was with a group of 4 so we ordered a little of everything and shared. I highly recommend the sliders, the pork slider was juicy and simply delicious! Just had a great impromptu supper with friends at Upcider. Hard Cider is it's main thing but the food was amazing! We had the Turkish Flat Bread, the Meatballs, the Cajun Shrimp and the Kale Cesar's salad... just to name a few of the delectable items on the food menu. Great to go to a place which is championing cider in America. The amount of ciders available is impressive. Being upstairs with big windows is great for people watching on Polk. A minor downside is that for some reason we got the occasional whiff of cigarette smoke, presumably from people smoking below and it rising. A couple of minor comments, which may only be of interest to real cider aficionados - particularly English ones. Firstly, american 'dry' cider is nowhere near as dry as you get in the UK, so you may want to go for something European if this is what you like. Secondly, they didn't seem to have any cider on tap. Straight aces. Hard cider has always been a guilty pleasure. Taste of beer has never been appealing which makes the sweeter flavor of cider much more intriguing. Brewers like Ace Cider and Angry Orchard make this spot a cider drinker's dream. There was ginger. There was cinnamon. There was much to love including $5 - $6 prices. Enthusiasm carries over to the food. Sweet potato fries with homemade blueberry ketchup. Shrimp and creole sauce. Salmon sliders. Potato pizza. Caramel bread pudding with homemade whip cream. So much potential for this place. The place was up some stairs through some unmarked doors. It looked trendy- lots of vintage wood and chalkboards. But honestly, it was a little creepy. It was very empty and some of the characters there seemed like they were out of a mob movie. The food here was mediocre hipster fare. Arugula salad was great, but not amazing and the flat bread was probably the highlight. The buffalo fries were... meh. More weird than intriguing. The most disappointing part of this establishment was that although its collection of worldwide ciders was intriguing and interesting, THEY HAD NO BEER OR CIDER ON TAP. If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town" - Ned Flanders I've always had an obsession with cider (so much so that I learned that Ned Flanders cider quote), whether it's the nonalcoholic variety or a delicious hard cider (especially pear), so when I heard Upcider was a cider bar, I excitedly made a reservation to go. There were pages upon pages of ciders from all over the world. It can be a bit overwhelming so don't be afraid to just ask for a recommendation and go with what the server suggests. My friend and I probably tried 4 different ciders and each one was delicious. The food is pretty good too... I LOVED the kale Caesar salad, but I was not all that keen on the mushroom flat bread (it was REALLY mushroomy... and that's coming from someone who loves mushrooms). I had to knock a star off because the service wasn't that great at first. There were only maybe 8 people in the entire place, and it still too my friend and I 20 minutes to get someone to come over and take our order. Finally either the owner or manager came over to take our order and the service was really great after that, but it shouldn't have come to that in the first place. Oh well. I went here last night (last minute idea) for the first time, and it was pretty great! Note when you enter, you must go upstairs to get to get to the actual restaurant/bar. Also note, even though there are tables or low tops -- you order from the bar. Also, if you aren't really paying that much attention when you pick the place (like me) -- this is a place that specializes in Ciders (thus the name), so there are a lot of Cider choices, and not many other options. I liked the atmosphere/decor of this place -- the windows are large and let in a lot of natural light, and you're able to look down on Polk street, which is pretty nice. There are also cute hanging lights, which really give it a trendy/fun/cute vibe. We ordered the Cajun Chicken Slider, Peppered Salmon Slider, Turkish Flatbread, and Sweet Potato Fries. My friend and I both agreed that the best part of the sliders was the bread/roll (really buttery and perfectly toasted). I thought the chicken was dry and didn't really eat too much of it -- although my friend did. The salmon slider was really peppery but didn't really have enough salt -- but it was cooked perfectly. We were disappointed by the Turkish Flatbread -- mostly because it didn't have cheese (lol). Honestly, it tasted great, but we just really wanted the cheese too. If the service was better I would given it a 4, but we literally sat at the bar for 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged our existence. When we arrived they weren't super busy so in my opinion someone should have made eye contact at some point. No one ever refilled our water glasses and getting the bill was just as painful as our initial greeting. Asked 3 different people before it finally happened. The place was small and cozy, music was a bit loud, clean, and accessible (easy to get to by bus). Best Mac & Cheese ever! Excellent selection of cider. All the other food looked and smelled amazing. The only reason they don't get five stars, is that my wife ordered one of their salads and was bummed that there were only two pecans. My wife and I really liked that they were open so late too. We had gone roller skating with friends and wanted a place that would be open when we were ready. Did I mention the Mac & Cheese? By the way, it had bacon on it too! It's also really nice to order and pay at the bar. They give you a number and bring your food out. Given that it can get pretty busy, it's a great way to relax and then leave when you want, without having to track down the check. Just in case you missed it, try the Mac & Cheese. read more

When my friends suggested a cider bar, I didn't really know what that would entail. As it happens, I like cider, but wouldn't have described myself as a 'big cider fan' largely because it's just not widely available. I'm no connoisseur. Well. This is the place to become one. I had no idea that there were so many styles of cider being made around the country, and it was really cool to be able to try a bunch and compare. They were all excellent, and we were all guided well by the server. The food was also really fun & tasty. I had the kale caesar which I really enjoyed and one of the sliders. We shared the potato souffle, but that's really more of mashed potatoes trying to sound fancier than they are. If the space was a little more welcoming and not so stark, I think I would have warmed to it sooner, but the windows looking out onto the street are pretty fun. This was such a fun place to be at! I'm not a big alcohol drinker, but my friend absolutely loves cider and wanted to bring me here. We ubered here, which I imagine most of you will do as well lest you actually attempt parking and not drink because drinking and driving is not acceptable. The atmosphere is really nice here. We came around 9 on a Friday and it was pretty busy. We ordered bbq fries, two flatbreads and had cider! The flatbreads were wonderful, the fries were good and I really enjoyed my cider. The menu for drinks is extensive and I think that's why my friend really enjoys this place. The list is no joke and they provide a lot of different options. I liked the menu because it was detailed and organized--that's something that makes it easier to choose. They provide names and a description of the drink so you'll know what you'll be ordering as well as the alcohol % and the price. Those were nice and I don't believe every place does that. I could be completely wrong, but it was my first time seeing such an extensive and detailed menu. We sat against a window which was nice to people observe and enjoy the scenery. There were also employees who came around periodically to take plates and ask us if we were doing okay which was really nice. It was a good experience. I'd definitely come back to this place. As a cider-lover, I was excited to find this place. FOUR pages of ciders on the menu, six ciders on-tap. We ordered buffalo fries, portobello slider, and pulled pork flatbed. 'Tis the season of windy SF nights and... cold cider! I was celebrating a friend's birthday with a group of around 20 people - the birthday girl said this was the only place that could fit a reservation on such short notice for a Friday evening. Try your chances if you're wandering past and looking for a bite (and sip, of course)! The setup of this place makes it easy for groups that hate trying to split checks. You'll get a clipboard with their portfolio-looking menu, then go up to the bar to order individually. Cards accepted! Servers were nice and easygoing, but we did have to ask for water from the bar. What Upcider had in store for us: - Stuffed Potato Souffle: salty, dense, and delicious. It's meat and potatoes, v2.0. Surprisingly filling. - Pulled Pork Flatbread: flatbreads are the most bang for your buck on the menu, and perfect for sharing. I love pork with pretty much anything, so this was a smoky, BBQ-ed winner in my book. - Turkish Flatbread: I am not a fan of lamb, so far with anything. But I can see why the subtle heat in this flatbread could appeal. - Creole Shrimp: we had a good laugh over the three pieces of bread and five jumbo shrimp in this dish. The sauce WAS good though and is perfect for dipping when you want some Cajun spice on your flatbread. - Fries: we sampled all three - Buffalo, Sweet Potato, and Garlic. Get Buffalo if you love your fries messy and saucy. The Sweet Potato actually was not that sweet, but the blueberry sauce gave it a little extra flavor boost. The Garlic advertises itself - I swear you can smell the distinctive fragrance from across the room. Drinks? I thought you'd never ask. - Ace Pumpkin Cider: one of their seasonal specials. It smells like cinnamon, but tastes tangy and light. - Possman Pure Cider: if you're not a cider person, you'll become one after trying this. It's smooth and complex, leaving a very pleasant aftertaste. - Sonoma Pear Cider (The Pitchfork): tastes like juice, with a creamy/buttery tail! I've been wanting to come here since this place opened because I really enjoy cider. Something about fall season approaching and pumpkin spice lattes back in the cafe rotation made it imperative that I check this place out last Friday. I loved the ambiance. This place is so cozy, exactly what you want while drinking cider and trying out their yummy bites. Dim lighting and bar stool seating lining the second story windows makes for great people watching (especially on a Friday night when people having an intoxicatedly good time are roaming the streets). Major plus was the clean bathroom. The cider selection is actually overwhelming. There was a pumpkin special which one of my friends tried, and I picked Ace Pear Cider mostly because it was at the top of the menu. My other friend got the Woodchuck Pear Cider which is the way to go. Ace was just too sweet and the Woodchuck had some extra effervescence that made it even more satisfying. Can't wait to come back to try the food. This is a welcomed addition to Polk's line-up in my opinion.
