Brisket sandwich with Jalapeno coleslaw
Heather G.

First time stopping here in Chino Valley, normally we just drive through to get to I-40, but some BBQ sounded too good to pass up. We had the brisket sandwich with Jalapeno coleslaw, and let me tell you, I would come back for this! If you are in the area and craving some BBQ, stop by Up In Smoke- you won't be disappointed!

Brenna was the one that took my order and she was very nice.

The ribs are so good! I also really like the jalapeño cole slaw. It has a little kick, but it's not too hot.

I have some dietary restrictions and it takes a minute to see what I can have. Here I don't feel pressured. It feels like an old timey lounge and the barbecue bar is fun and unique. I got the Filly salad with smoked chicken. It was fresh and delicious. The cranberry vinaigrette was yummy. My husband got the Filly Sandwich which is a barbecue take on a cheese steak. He loved it. The fries are crisp and seasoned well, the brisket is tender and flavorful. My son got the pulled pork sandwich with the cheesey jalapeño cornbread. The corn bread was moist and not spicy. My son said the sandwich was really good and ge liked the slaw on it. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Colt Grill is located on Whiskey Row and caddy corner from the Courthouse. It is easy to find and street parking is plentiful. Colt Grill has both indoor and outdoor uncovered seating which is so popular with the weather here. Inside it's a counter service restaurant with a bar that serves BBQ. I ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken platter that comes with slaw and cornbread for $17.50. I added the "meal deal" of 2 sides for $6 more and chose the sweet beans and Texas Toast because I wanted to try those side dishes in addition with what came with the meal. The meal was ready in less than 15 minutes. I immediately realized that I ordered too much food. Along with the 1/2 bird, the slaw and jalapeño cheese cornbread were full size sides. The beans and toast were too but then I did get to try them all so I wasn't complaining. The chicken looked perfect and was juicy and flavorful with a hint of smoke and a lot of taste. The cole slaw was cool and creamy and the big slice of cornbread moist and delicious. The beans had content in them with brisket and onions and looked great but were unfortunately dry. I would have been content to not order the two extra sides and save the $6. All in all the food was good tasting and affordable. I would have given a 4 score except for these negatives: First the dry beans. Second was for the flies buzzing around inside. Third was that they were out of some utensils and I had to use a child's fork to eat with. Evidently the dishwasher wasn't keeping up. Finally they have a sauce bar here with about 8 bbq sauces with descriptions to use which is neat. However, the 2 sauces that I wanted were out at the time. 3 of the 4 negatives were management related issues and may have not been the norm here however that is what I experienced. Colt Grill is a popular restaurant in Prescott that needs a little better organization. However, I would return on a future visit here.

To my delight, the dish came out within minutes. Service from entire staff is on point. I'm not even a fan of beef, unless it's a burger (it's a texture thing for me). The brisket was tender and so flavorful. They also have a mostly/if not fully local beer selection from AZ, which my fave beer is here. The place was practically empty. Diego was running the joint singlehandedly, serving as the host/bartender/waiter/cook, and doing a magnificent job wearing all of those hats simultaneously. My husband and I both had the Mondo Burger (7 oz. 100% ground chuck patty served on brioche hamburger bun, pulled pork, cheddar, onion rings, BBQ aioli, $22). My husband chose the slaw for his side; I declined a side because the burger was plenty big enough for me. My husband was pleasantly surprised that the slaw had apples in it, which was a new experience. The burgers were perfectly done and hit just the right spot. They also arrived quickly. We also bought some bulk BBQ home to toss in the freezer for a second meal this coming weekend. It's sold in 6-oz. portions (pulled pork or sliced chicken, $10; brisket $12). Photo of my Mondo Burger below. Looking forward to our next visit!

I especially loved how well everything was packed. The food was very flavorful with a really nice level of spice. Nothing was overwhelmingly hot, but everything had enough kick to keep things interesting. The gumbo and étouffée were rich and perfectly seasoned, with a velvety sauce, and the jerk chicken (thighs for those that are curious) was packed with flavor. The greens were really interesting and unlike any other greens I've had (you must get this!), red beans and rice, and smashed smoked potatoes were all delicious, and the andouille added a great smoky, savory touch. The cornbread which is more savory as opposed to sweet was also the perfect accompaniment. The portions were generous, and we thought the prices were very reasonable for the quality and amount of food we received. We ordered takeout and would absolutely come back to try more of the menu. Highly recommend!

There's a lot of spices and vinegar which isn't over powering. It's what I crave. Never have I even heard of a vinegar based coleslaw Tonight I'm going to try the triple smoked cherry bomb sandwich with a side of coleslaw Hidden gem I tell ya!

Here at COLT Grill I had The Filly, a salad the menu described as "romaine, walnuts, pears, cranberries, bleu cheese crumbles, cranberry vinaigrette". I opted for the "small" ($8.50) over the" large" ($13) and it was a beautiful salad both in presentation and taste. But the salad portion of the menu also said one could "add chicken or smoked turkey" ($4) or "add beef brisket" ($5) and I did. Did you just tell me I could get a perfect, tasty, ample salad with a separate, robust and delicious side of BBQ beef brisket for $13.50? I wasn't just ready to fly to Arizona; I was ready to move to Cottonwood. This meal was delicious. A "small platter of smoked brisket" ($14.50) was enjoyed equally by another at my table but, with my bowlful of brisket, I paid little attention to that other meal. My attention instead was aimed at a nearby table's indulgence in the smoked Mac-n-cheese ($4.75) and Cheesy Jalapeño Corn Bread ($4). Jealous I was, for I had no room for anything more. What a winner. COLT Grill might be half the reason I return to this area in the future.
