The cornbread which is more savory as opposed to sweet was also the perfect accompaniment. My husband and I both had the Mondo Burger (7 oz. 100% ground chuck patty served on brioche hamburger bun, pulled pork, cheddar, onion rings, BBQ aioli, $22). My husband chose the slaw for his side; I declined a side because the burger was plenty big enough for me. My husband was pleasantly surprised that the slaw had apples in it, which was a new experience. The burgers were perfectly done and hit just the right spot. They also arrived quickly. We got there at 11am and the place was already almost full, which was odd, as they open at 11. The manager/owner greeted us and took us to our table which was an outside table and what I can only describe as the back of beyond, as far as possible from kitchen and close to Montezuma Street. Luckily the misters were working and there was shade. We were very thirsty for water and when the server came we asked for water and then beer. We waited 15 minutes for the water and by then I had to go back into the restaurant to see what was going on. The manager brought out our water. After another 5 minutes and no beer, I went back in again and saw our server placing our order. 20 minutes AFTER we placed it. My wife prefers to have a beer and then enjoy the food. However, with the delay, it became increasingly apparent that the window to enjoy the beer was rapidly closing. As the beer finally came out, so did the food. That is how long it took. The beer was decent, I had the Docs Blonde and my wife had a blue moon. I ordered a burger with brisket and paired it with coleslaw. It was ordered medium rare and was cooked to perfection. Fantastic burger. My wife ordered caesar salad but got Cobb Salad and the server was gone before any comments could be made. Not ideal. My wife and her aunt basically nibbled at their salads but were clearly not impressed. The tomatoes were off. The salad was presented in a huge square plate with not much depth, so managing the salad becomes a chore. Once, again, my burger was decent. It was in a metal tray because, why not. The manager came by later and explained there was some internet issue which held up the drinks, but it seems like it would make sense just to place the order at the bar when they go in. But what do I know. The manager said he would "take care" of the drinks, which implied a comp. When the server came with the bill, he had a credit card hand unit and we said we would pay in cash. He did adapt, but we never saw a breakdown of the bill, so it was impossible to know if the beers were taken off. I doubt it. Oh and when we paid in cash, he noticed the European accent and when we gave him the money, he said, without even trying to hide it. "Thats not how we do it in America". Basically there was no way he was getting a tip due to all the issues. He did not acknowledge any of it and even started making sarcastic comments to the table next door. After the server left, the customer walked over to our table and made some very uncomplimentary comments about the server. They also left their leftovers. Take from that what you will.

The atmosphere has that classic, old-school family diner feel, which can be charming. The building is definitely showing its age, though, and could use a little TLC. Even without a full renovation, a deep cleaning would go a long way in freshening up the space. I've ordered the chili relleno omelette both times, served with breakfast potatoes and a muffin. It's packed with flavor and has just the right amount of spice--for someone who thinks toothpaste is spicy! The first one was a little creamier, but both were outstanding. On our first visit, my husband had a BBQ sandwich (of some sort) with French fries, and he really enjoyed it. The second time, he decided to try the A1 Burger with a side of zucchini "coins" (which, amusingly, weren't actually round). He was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the burger was, and it was cooked perfectly. We'll definitely be back to work our way through more of the menu. Maybe one of these visits we'll even give in and try the salad and taco bar!

In my opinion this restaurant has a mixed vibe, to suit different classes of diners. Large flat screen televisions were affixed to a couple of walls, showing a variety of sports channels. Their outdoor space seems like a bistro for entertainment. The main dining space has high and low tables, suitable for larger parties. It's a really cool restaurant to dine in esthetically. Let me move on to the exceptional service! We walked into the restaurant about 20-30 minutes before closing. We asked if we were too late to order and to dine in. We were assured we were not. My sister and I were allowed to order whatever we wanted from the menu. At no time did we feel rushed or ignored. Our server BRANDON was a jewel!
