Universal Plumbing came out and provided an estimate to replace a 3 handle shower/tub fixture with a single handle fixture. It was about 2x more $$$ than a number of other reputable plumbing companies that I called that were also highly rated on Yelp. Universal Plumbing insisted that they come out to provide a free estimate. Yet, pricing comes from a mobile app with their "standard" pricing for this type of job. Beware. read more

Please be very careful. Dishonest, deceptive and predatory. Tried to charge almost $1000 for $6 easily accessible broken pipe. They wouldn't leave. Tried to take me to ATM or Bank. Fixed problem myself in 15 minutes for $6. I worked in criminal law for a few years and saw these practises come up in court, the amount of disparity between what was wrong and the price they were going to charge was astonishing. They know you are panicking and are vulnerable. A lot of people are not aware that this is not just a civil matter but can be prosecuted under criminal law as deception. In general for all house work 1. Stay as calm as you can, don't rush to pay someone in a panic. 2. Try to get a second/third opinion. 3. Try and get a friend or neighbor to shut off water and advise. 4. Never be alone when they come (especially women) 5. Never let them take you to the ATM or Bank 6. Don't just pay because you're in a panic, stay calm. 8. Calm down and don't let yourself be swindled into paying $1000 for a $50 job. 9. Don't pay more than $150 for an emergency unless you absolutely know the work is needed and you have got a second opinion. read more

I just had a visit from them today, as my first time using any plumbing service. The issue was the toilet filling up water too slowly. Pros: 1. They fixed the problem, it is filling up back to the normal speed now 2. The guy, Reubon, along with the other guy, were very nice Cons: 1. Wasn't on time. But I didn't expect them to, so didn't bother me too much. 2. I personally think the company's charge is over priced. The guys was at my home for only 30 mins, replaced the fill valve which costs no more than $30. And final bill was $180, which means they charged me $150 for that 30 mins. Probably will try other companies next time, if I ever need to. read more

Sorry I didn't get a chance to work with them. In order to get an accurate quote on a mainline possible replacement, I'd expect a camera inspection to be part of that. A free quote is offered on Yelp, but when I called, it's actually $200 to run a camera. I already found another company who ran the camera for free. I like that they answered on the first ring. Angel and his team did a good job of replacing a huge water heater at our lease. 5 stars for putting plastic down to protect the new unit going up the stairs and for removing the old unit over the ledge so as not to damage the property. Universal Plumbing gets a 1 star for the scheduling and follow-up communication. I was given a window of 12-4pm. Landlord kept texting and calling them until 6pm, asking where their crew was, and was anyone going to show up that day. Was told at 6pm that they were 15 minutes away. Crew arrived at 8pm instead!! They worked on the unit and left at 12:40am the next day - yup, past midnight. While I appreciate that they stayed to get the job done, I was livid that I had cancelled some business meetings that day just to wait for them - all day. Angel was apologetic for the schedule and communication mishap, but it was still a big fat middle finger of disrespect to my time and job. The next time the landlord called them for repairs to a leaky kitchen sink, Universal Plumbing never even returned the landlord's calls. I guess business is booming and it's a vendor's market. read more

They are great! I had a disgusting clogged sink and filthy "pipe water" was all over my kitchen. My landlord arranged for someone to come the next day, but it was getting worse and I didn't want that stuff all over the place where we eat! I called several plumbers and got the "after hours" quotes, several of which were over $200. Then I called Universal, who said that it would be more because it was past 7PM, so I was expecting another quote in the hundreds. Then he told me the "more" was 20 dollars and apologized. An extra 20 dollars is not a problem when CHUD is all over my kitchen. I didn't get the name of the guy that came, but he arrived within an hour of my call, did an amazing job and only charged $80 (after 7PM pricing). I highly recommend this service. They are nice, do a great job and get rid of all the CHUD in your kitchen! -He even took out the trash when he was leaving! read more

I read about these guys at about 10am today and called to see if I could schedule an appointment sometime this week to hydrojet my main line at my house. It's now 4:30 and they're wrapping up the hoses and packing up the truck. Because they're done with the job. 6.5 hours after I called them. This wasn't an emergency by any means. I just needed some roots cleaned out from my main line and it was something that I had been putting off for months. In one afternoon - specifically, a two hour window that they did arrive within - they knocked out the whole job. And for a reasonable, comparable price to some of the options in the area that would take days or longer to get back to me. Now I can run all of my faucets while flushing both toilets and taking two showers with the dishwasher and washing machine running and I won't have to worry about anything except the drought and how I am a terrible human being for wasting so much water. Called for a stopped bathtub drain that wasn't cleared up by liquid drain cleaner or an hour of trying to snake the drain myself. Took my information and gave me a window of a few hours that day. Called me back later to let me know they were on their way. Quick, friendly, honest service. The decades-old overflow valve is all it was- very simple fix. Refused to charge me the full drain-cleaning fee. I've seen a lot of shoddy maintenance work in the past, so I'm glad I found a service like this with professionalism and courtesy. Had the drain clear inside of 5 minutes and in 15 everything was cleaned up and back in place. Our water heater shut off on a Sunday and the company sent someone over that same night to diagnose the issue and did not charge a service fee. Our home was built in 1979 and we didn't need to repair our copper pipes until recently. I tried everything to unclog my tub drain, and was left desperate to find someone who knew what they were doing and could come out on the weekend for a reasonable rate. Not only did they send out a team of two earlier than their first available same-day appointment time, but Rojo and Benito were the best guys. They realized that I had been misquoted on the phone, but then called in to the office to argue that because I'd already done some of the work by removing the lift assembly, that I should be charged the lower rate I was quoted. Not only THAT, but then when they ended up having to go through the sink to remove the clog, they identified a piece there that desperately needed to be replaced, and did it free of charge. We highly recommend their service!! They are very reliable, honest, and efficient. We had them over twice in 2 years. Both times, VERY satisfying! Last call was just the other day. I thought I broke our garbage disposal after grinding most of the small wooden spoon into our drain. The loud noise was just not going away even after I took everything out... and every time I turned on the garbage disposal, it sounded very harmful to the machine. I kept feeling inside, and the blade felt like it was not attached to the center anymore... So, we decided to give them a call. We explained what happened... he kept checking and (may have adjusted something) and asked us... "Were you concerned because of the noise? If it was, then there shouldn't be any problem." He turns on the garbage disposal, the noise wasn't as intense, and it started to fade away. Magic! lol I'm sure you're curious how much he charged us for coming all the way to our house on Sunday afternoon to tell us there is nothing wrong with our garbage disposal. Nothing. It's never a fun day when you wake up to take a shower and the water is ICE COLD (trust me, I've screamed with a higher pitch than Janet Leigh in Psycho, when I wasn't expecting the cold.) But I digress, I've had a couple of "plumbers" come in an out to take a look at the water heater and at one point even waited 3 days for the gas company to come out and look at the water heater...each time they would somehow get the pilot to re-light and charge us an insane amount (except for the gas company) and then head off on their way...in each case the problem wasn't solved because the pilot light would go off whenever there was a heavy rain or it got really windy. Finally fed up with this problem after it happened for the 4th time this winter I searched Yelp on a Sunday morning and gave Universal Plumbing a call. Angel answered the phone, was super pleasant, quoted me a price and let me know that they had a full schedule for a Sunday but would make it out to my place before 4:00 PM. A few hours later, Angel called back to let me know that one of his staff people would be at my house in about 30 minutes (this was around 12:00). Lo and behold, someone was at my door by 12:30 and in the span of about twenty minutes reviewed the problem, determined that it was ia busted thermo-couple, replaced it and we had hot running water again in about 20 minutes. Today was the first time using Universal Plumbing Co. and I am so thankful they were able to make it out today and fix the issues at my boyfriend's house in Atwater Village, a clog that backed up and over flowed through the downstairs toilet. I had my toilet clog up for the 3rd time this month, I called a couple of plumbing companies from Craigslist trying to save money. At the end of the day, I realized that I didn't save much especially if the problem was not rectified the first time around. I finally decided I needed a licensed plumber instead of a regular Craigslist handyman, I happen to find Universal Plumbing here on Yelp and after reading their reviews I decided to give them a try. Luckily I wasn't disappointed, and even though I had to spend more than I'm usually willing to spend. They fixed the problem correctly...they were efficient and the quality of work definitely showed a big difference from the previous company I had used. Overall...this company was on time, clean, reasonable and thorough with their troubleshooting and fixed the problem correctly. Overall great experience! I have long, thick hair. I'm sure you can follow where this is going. I was lucky enough to have the owner's son work on my tub! He didn't find much hair thank goodness, but did unlock the drain. It seems to slip into the lock position, so my roomie and I how to safely switch it back and gave us advice on at home drain care. They cleared 20ft of roots at our office building using hydrojet. They use the camera and jet at the same time so you can see what's going on. Saved me from excavating! Called at 7pm on a Sunday night and was able to schedule an appointment for Monday morning. They quoted me an arrival time of between 10-11am, with a pre-arrival call an hour before. At 9:45am, I hadn't heard from anyone, so I called. Arrival time was pushed back to 11:30am, and the team arrived at that time. Their service was professional and efficient. They were transparent about their prices, and charged me a flat fee for water heater replacement. They took the time to explain the process to me, and when parts were needed, the explained and demonstrated why- I appreciated this incredibly. They left their work area clean, and were finished within their quoted time (2-3 hours). Overall, I'm happy with their work. I'm sure their prices aren't the cheapest in town, but that's not what I'm going for when I'm having work done on my house. My problem stemmed from a leaking pipe coming from one of my upstairs bathrooms. I didn't know exactly where this was coming from, but definitely knew I needed to have this repaired ASAP. I contacted Universal Plumbing and Angel arrived at my house within the hour. It turns out the leak was coming from a drainage pipe from our upstairs shower. I needed a pressure regulator installed in a new home I just bought. The existing pipes looked unprofessionally done--oddly shaped and twisted--so the guys at UP not only installed the regulator, but they removed excess pipes that were not in use and rerouted so that the finished work looked clean, tight, and symmetrical, which was important to me because it's the front of my house. These guys saved my husband and I once again! We had a major clog in our main pipeline on Memorial Day, and these guys came to the rescue just a few hours later on a holiday! Apparently roots invaded our pipes (see 1st picture) and caused the clogs throughout the house. They did an amazing job hydro jetting the clog and installed some new connection pipes (see 2nd picture).
