I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this butcher. The staff was super helpful and very nice in answering my questions. They even told me about the dog food they have been selling for years that is in high demand. They sell beef and chicken which is basically ground up food that is frozen, cut up, and sold by the pound for dog food. I ended up buying several pounds of it and two large bones. The prices are great. Im looking forward to going back and getting myself some good quality meat. They have excellent food and will go out of their way to help you get what you want. The Meat Market is my go-to place for sliced meats and party/picnic preparation. The meats are fresh and sliced thin without you even having to ask. I have enjoyed the ham, prosciutto, salami, pepperoni, turkey, and provolone. Last fall I was hosting people over and scrambling to find something to serve. On a whim I bought a few meatballs (eggplant and meat based) and the meatless rice balls. My guests were raving about them. I now frequently pick those up for a party or a quick dinner. In addition I love their oil soaked mozzarella balls -another party favorite. They also have a large stock of other kitchen goods such as oils, sauces, breads, salad ingredients, fresh meat, milk, eggs, etc. I feel really lucky to have this place around the corner from me. read more

I love their mozzarella and the sauces, not to mention the great pasta selection... so much more than a meat store. But today I was very upset to learn that they do not take back the bell jars they sell their sauces in. It would be so easy for them to sterilize (and they should be doing before canning anyway) and reuse them. Instead I was told they just throw out returned jars. I would give 5 stars, but the environmental impact for not reusing the reusable jars takes off two stars in my book. One of the best things in Windsor Terrace (or Park Slope, depending). They will cut meat any way you want, and order meat for you, and it will always be very high quality. They have a few homemade marinades, sausages, and meat mixes, which are all good, but not always up to the quality of the meat. I like their potato salad, but I don't know how many other people will. But beyond the quality meat is some impressive service. I still remember being 6 years old and having someone from the deli counter hand me bologna, roast beef, or whatever meat they were slicing. They will cut up bones for your dog if you ask nicely. They will be patient and explain things to you. If you can't pick up meat on the day you said you would, they will put it in the freezer for another day without expressing the hatred you so rightly deserve. There's also a variety of San Pellegrino drinks, some french lemonade, and a bunch of pantry items used in italian cooking along the walls. Clearly, I love this place. read more

Are you kinda creeped out by big grocery store meat that probably comes from one of those huge Frankenfactories? Me too so that's why I come here. I've been to a couple other butchers in the Park Slope area but United is by far the best in terms of price, service and quality. Everything looks healthy, the butchers are friendly and knowledgeable and they'll cut something up any way you like it or get something from the back stockroom if it isn't in the display case. Beef tenderloin and filet mignon costs almost half the price of Whole Foods which is surprising because those cuts are expensive almost anywhere you go. Two big skirt steaks were only fourteen bucks too. The steaks, roasts and stews I've prepared with their beef always come out with a perfect grass-fed texture and great flavor. Any kitchen should have at least two cans of san marzano tomatoes because of their superior flavor and almost infinite uses. If you haven't tried cooking with them then get to it. United has them in big and small cans and a lot of other Italian grocer items too. read more

I don't like to begin reviews with a disclaimer, so allow me to do just that. My 3 star rating shouldn't imply that there is anything inherently wrong with United. The 3 stars is simply a reflection of the comparative quality of United versus the world's greatest butcher over on Smith St. Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to the discussion of United. The employees here are nothing but nice and helpful. Every question I've asked has been answered earnestly and they've never as much as balked at a request -- be it cutting steaks or grinding some strange blend of meats that I'm looking for. They also offer good quality meat that I've generally enjoyed. My biggest issue with United is that they don't keep their primals in the display case. If I want a strip, I have to ask them to cut it and they then go back, cut the steaks and bring them back out. For some reason, they instead keep unsliced deli meats in one of the cases and pre-cut meats in the other. Part of the value of going to the butcher is being able to look at the cuts of meat and assess which you'd like. If the strip is looking particularly nice today, let's go with that. If it's the ribeye, then I'll pick some up. And, for the record here, everyone knows what deli meats look like. Putting them in a display case is completely unnecessary. No one is going to walk in and say, "hmm, that turkey looks a little overly processed today, I think I'll hold off on my order of cold cuts." To be entirely fair, United is almost certainly your best option for meats in the Park Slope/Windsor Terrace area. But, Paisano's on Smith St simply offers superior quality and a slightly better price. I can also see and assess the various cuts offered at Paisano's. Due to it's proximity to my place, I'll undoubtedly make return trips to United and I do appreciate that it's something of a neighborhood institution. And, hey, United is worlds better than Fleisher's where you need a private loan to afford a single steak. read more

I am not sure what they could do better. The prepared foods are fresh (lasagna always is a winner), the meats cuts are excellent and the service is always excellent. If I ever move I will miss United Meat Market. The only thing that is a pain is that they aren't open on Sunday. read more

Between United and the folks who run the butcher shop on 5th Ave and 8th Street, you will probably find some of the best non-organic, corn fed beef and other meats. United also makes a great rare roast beef (not as good as la Bagel Delight but very close to it and more available) as well as Boars head and Citterio sandwiches. They also cater to the ready made meals. Mostly red sauce stuff such as eggplant, veal and chicken parmigiana as well as rolitinis, and frozen dinners. In short United is a jack of all trades. A nice selection of items lightly crammed into a semi-small space. Service is courteous and professional. read more

How is it that nobody has yet reviewed this place? While they can certainly use a more colorful name, the one they have is at least serviceable, and this family-run market provides Windsor Terrace and the South Slope with some of the freshest meats and mozzarella around. I once witnessed what looked like the entire local fire department in line for lunchtime subs -- and for good reason. United Meat Market combines their great deli section with Caputo's Italian Bread (deliberately capitalized because this Bread should be considered a proper noun -- and it's often even still warm), resulting in a crispy, savory-sweet explosion of joy. Try one with ham and roasted peppers. You'll quite likely weep. With prices that consistently undercut (oh, I am so clever) the local Key Food, the personalized service of a family-run business, and this kind of selection, why patronize a larger, less personal store? Even the bottled juices are less expensive here. Cheer on. Brooklyn needs to support an effort this great. read more

There used to be many meat markets spread across Park Slope and into Windsor Terrace when I was growing. I remember at least 3 on 7th Ave and another several on 5th that had saw dust on the floor and steer horns on the wall. The only one that remains is United. Last year Park Slope lost its last butcher store and it seems like United only got busier. I know people who live in Midwood and Ditmas Park who come here for meat, and especially for the 6 foot sandwiches when hosting large groups. With the lack of other nearby butchers the place is busy but you can always get what you're looking for whether it's steaks, ground meat, chicken, bread, sauces, or prepared food. The marinara sauce is good and so are the chicken cutlets and eggplant parmigiana. The eggplant is pounded thing and baked so you have good flavor without too much frying. You can also get filet tips if you want tender meat without paying a ton for a few pounds of a prime cut. They make their own sausages and have Bell & Evans, Murrays, and other brands you might want but don't see at the supermarket. I can't remember ever having a hero from them, but they make a good roast beef and have assorted spices and pastas on the shelves. In short, it's a good store. read more

I don't eat meat. That being said, United Meat Market sells Field Roast Sausages (vegan) and they are incredible. I'm not aware of another place nearby except for the Food Co-op on Union that sells them, so that is a huge plus for me. Also, their marinated mozzarella is delicious. Contrary to what a reviewer wrote below, the beef sold at United is grass-fed. They were named by the Village Voice as the best place in NYC to get grass-fed beef. (They also recently started selling Applegate Farms' preservative-free turkey (sandwich meat) in the deli case. ) I go here at least once a week to, at least, get chicken cutlets (you can get Bell & Evans if you ask for it) and ground chicken for my dogs. The steaks and short ribs and pork cuts are great as well. The prepared foods are good--especially the chicken parm and the pasta sauces. Some of the guys are better than others at slicing and pounding even cutlets, and I'm not totally wild about their sausage. But those are quibbles. The little pudding cups (think they are called something a little fancier, maybe mousse?) near the front door in the cold case are a nice treat. And you can get any cut of meat you want if you call ahead. read more

I love this butcher shop. They are so helpful and friendly and the meats are fresh and decently priced for the quality. They also do special orders: i needed whole duck legs for a recipe I wanted to try and they were happy to order for me and then called to let me know when they arrived. I have never tried their prepared foods but they look quite tasty. The United Meat Market is a meat market/unique grocery store that is pretty much without equal. ALL of the beef offerings, as I was told by the staff, are grass-fed. That is pretty amazing. From the ground chuck to the filet mignon cuts - what a find! Cost-wise regarding the meats, they are on par with, if not just slightly cheaper than Fairway! Additionally, they make a lot of unique items in store. They have this really nice provolone-stuffed chicken breasts, lots of spicy and sweet pork and chicken and apple or chicken and broccoli sausages. Lots of neat items: argentina-marinated beef, different types of marinated kabobs, ready-made meals, etc. They make several kinds of homemade pasta sauces: vodka, lobster, lamb, bolognese and marinara. Plus, this is the best place for subs in the Windsor Terrace nabe. The only criticism would be that things like potatoes, onions, garlic, pasta, rice, oils, condiments, some breads, etc. may be slightly costlier than other stores. If shopping at UMM saves me a trip to the nabe's poor offerings at Key Food, then a few dollars more is worth it. read more

Unfortunately places like this are a dying breed in much of the western world, as giant supermarkets have become one-stop-for-everything destinations. Fortunately in BK we still have places like this. It's not huge. You'll still need to stop at the produce place, cheese shop, fish monger and baker to round out your shopping. But they have good product, which they know well, and are happy to answer questions. They've also got some semi-prepared meals (lasagne, sausages, etc) + an assortment of semi-frozen, locally produced pasta dishes which need no chef skills at all. If you live near and like to cook, check it out for your basic proteins. read more

I love this place so much. They've been around forever as an Italian butcher, but have also changed with the times. So you can buy great mama-made lasagna or meatballs and an extraordinary array of high-quality meats but can also get organic milk and bison burgers. And wow do they make great sandwiches. We special ordered massive (3-ft?) heroes for a party that were just fabulous. Also now almost every weekend my family makes homemade pizza using the dough they sell plus their homemade sauce and their fresh mozzarella (and maybe some of their lamb sausage as a special treat). When you go, bring stuff you want to buy tithe counter when you place your meat order and they total it up and send it over to the register. It's a little different, but you get used to it.
