Lou is a great guy and definitely likes to talk, make sure you have a good 15 minutes or so if purchasing your meats during the day because more often than not there are some hilariously heated and informative conversations about the neighborhood going on amongst residents that you can't avoid being a part of if you go in. Also it helps not to be too sensitive if and when the language or topics heads into the risque area. Good, large selection in house and anytime I want some specialty meat they'll get it for me in a couple of days if they don't regularly stock it. Fresh chickens in every day for my roasted chicken fixation I've had recently (and at like a dollar a pound it's a steal) and I just found out they make homemade sausage every Friday (they sell out on Friday too and that's why I had never seen them before. And yes they are delicious.) The prices are fantastic, way cheaper than the C-Town down the street and fresher to be sure. Sawdust on the floor, antique cash register and a sign that says 'No Credit Today' that is up everyday (even though Lou is awesome and times when I came in and realized I didn't have enough cash after ordering so much, because I'm an idiot like that, he just told me to bring it by later instead of having me go run to an ATM right then) make this place a lot of fun to frequent. I pop in every week to buy my eggs and butter and just to see what specials they've got as they buy bulk trucks of overstock dry goods and grocery stuff sight unseen for cheap and then pass the savings onto us with $1 or so containers of cream cheese, hot dog and hamburger buns, muffins, ketchup, grits, etc. You can't go wrong buying your meats from Lou; great guy and great product. read more

I hate to be the first person to not give this place 5 stars but with my most recent experience there, I'm being generous. I loved the shop. #1 fan, Lou is super friendly, the meat is dirt cheap and the selection is good. There's always some gossip floating around. Granted, it takes at least 20 minutes to even get a dozen eggs, but don't go there if you're in a rush. Last time I was in with my roommate I watched them cut up raw chicken for 2 patrons, then handle pork and steaks, then cut up slices of deli meat...which while slicing, he was eating and passing out for people to sample. All of this without washing his hands. Then I realized that of all the times I've been in there, I don't think I've ever seen them wash their hands. Or wear gloves. OK. I'm not a germaphobe at all. But handling raw chicken with your bare hands, and then handling deli meats while passing slices around is completely unsanitary. Cleanliness - 1 star Value - 5 stars Recommendation? Go there if you get chicken, or at least a meat that you cook hot enough to kill salmonella. Definitely avoid the deli meat. read more

Went in late on Saturday and Lou was surprised to know that i still had not bought my groceries for the weekend on a Saturday evening. I asked him for four steaks as i am having friends coming in from out of town, and Lou cut me four AMAZING steaks, cleaned them, explained to me how to prepare them "Just fu**ing grill them, and you're ok"... I got a cut of rib eye, aged a couple of weeks i think, 4 lbs, and i was shocked to see the final price was $24. It brought me back to home, Italy: an informal place, non pretentious, where the butcher uses his hands (no gloves), talks all the time, makes funny (or stupid) jokes, but knows his meat, can cut a piece with his eyes closed, and won't overcharge you for your steaks. The place is small but totally worth a visit. It will become your place to go get steaks, or wild chickens, or eggs. read more

I'd never been to a butcher before, so I have nothing to compare this place to, but I will probably be a regular after my first visit here. An entire chicken cost the customer before me $3.80. A couple before them got two choice cuts of beef (bone-in, I dunno more than that) for $11.35. I got 8 hot dogs and 8 slices of bacon to wrap around the sweet sweet dogs for $4.00. It's like living in the past, and it's AWESOME. The conversation in that place is what everyone else said, which is another great thing about this place. And you get into it. This is a good place to buy meat, butter, and eggs - (so many places overcharge on eggs!) I also like the brand of Soppresatta they carry. Lou, the velvet-voiced, cynical butcher, is a whiz with the knife. He can debone a chicken breast in like, 10 seconds or something. I'm not sure how long, actually, but he's fast. If you are looking for meat on a big grilling day, like July 4, then be forewarned - he will probably sell out of all the good steaks and chops and only have chopmeat (aka ground beef) and weiners. One curious thing is that sometimes the brothers will get a shipment of something strange, like sweet potato pies, or cans of chopped jalepenos. They will generally sell these things for a very good price. The place is called model T apparently because of their hobby of maintaining some old fords, and periodically renting them to movie crews and stuff. The only real minus is that it smells like a butcher shop. read more

Can't believe how affordable this spot is. I got a 2.5 fresh pork shoulder for under $6. Asked for a bag of bones to make broth, which the butcher promptly cut for me, and refused to take money for. Also, they sell eggs by the dozen for $1.15. Cheapest you'll find them anywhere in the neighborhood. I completely disagree with the reviews re: rotting meat smells; I couldn't smell anything at all, and the meat all looked extremely fresh. Hope these guys stay in business indefinitely. Simply an outstanding place to get your meat. Yes you will be engaged in some lengthy neighborhood gossip and irreverent banter, that is an absolute certainty, but the atmosphere is nothing short of friendly and Lou never makes you feel like an outsider. All nostalgia aside the meat is excellent made even more impressive by the value it represents, its less expensive then the grocery stores and much higher quality. The whole chickens are fresh and much closer to what you imagine a normal well proportion bird looks like, not all wet yellow and chesty like those Perdue abominations. Simply put you cant do better for your dollar and once you start having a real butcher cut you fresh meat to order its hard to go back to the Styrofoam trays under fluorescent lights. read more

I truly did not know the worth of water until the well was dry in this case. This place isn't just a butcher as much as a way of life. I've moved out of the neighborhood, and now I find myself wishing I could go anywhere around where I live and get a 1/2 lb of amazing swiss cheese for $1.00 or less. On top of that, I always walked out of there with a full belly from all of the sliced samplings. This place is amazing. It's neighborhoody, legit and wonderful. My only gripe would be that for a hippie-California transplant like myself who doesn't like to get plastic bags very often--here I am ALWAYS bullied into taking a plastic bag. It might be a pride thing--to have no one walk our empty handed, but I'd really rather just throw my stuff in a canvas bag for the half a block walk...oh well. read more

What can I say...Lou & Joe r the absolute BEST butchers in NY. It's like going back in time when my Italian mother would go to on Liberty Ave! They got the best cuts of meat of anything u ask for! One time, they even cut up a lamb for me right in front of my face!! Lol!! They r so honest and reasonable. I hike up to them about every 3-4 weeks for ALL of my meat and poultry. The cuts r just the absolute BEST. They always ask how u want them cut and will recommend the best one for whatever u plan on making. They also make their own pork sausages on FRIDAYS...better get them fast!! Cos they're gone in the blink of an eye!! It takes me over half an hour to get there...so I always fill up on whatever I can. Oh wait, did I mention their fresh chicken legs?? They are giant and so tender!! These guys cannot be stopped! On Saturdays I take the L train from Manhattan to Graham Avenue, have lunch at Carmines and then to Model T-Bones and wings if they still have them (they sell out early). Their 2 pound bags of frozen large shrimp (16-20) are a steal. Lou and Joe are the sharpest knives in the place and they will entertain you with wit, knowledge and lore, if you show interest. Meat is always fresh. Ask them about the meat they sell for the bachelor! read more

I walked in there a month ago with my mom, who hadn't been there in literally decades. Lou remembered her, and also my dad who's been dead for 30 years. This place has been my family's butcher since before I was born and I can clearly see why. The meat here is so fresh and cheap that I've given up supermarket meat entirely. The chicken legs in particular are ridiculously cheap, fresh, tasty, and gigantic. Tell Lou what you're making and he'll go the extra step, double grinding chopped meat for meatballs or recommending a way to prepare anything he's got. Even the seafood, which he doesn't prepare, just resells, is fairly cheap and high quality. Like other people have said, don't go in there if you're in a hurry, there's a constant stream of chatter with the customers and the one or two old times who make this place their hangout, and the chatter isn't for those with virgin ears. It's part of the charm of the place. It's a bit of old Brooklyn that's still hanging on. read more

The meat is much fresher and often cheaper than what you are getting out of the plastic wrap at C-Town. When I lived in Jersey I made an effort to try out all of the hot dog brands there. Best Provisions hot dogs ended up being my favorite. Once I moved to NYC I was unable to find them until I visited Model T Meats. I was shocked to find out they were cheaper in Brooklyn than they were in Jersey. More importantly, they don't sell any other brand of hot dogs. You can't beat the prices. The only thing better than the price is the quality. When you order steaks they are cut to order with amazing speed. The atmosphere is a little unusual - sawdust on the floor, handwritten signs, old school cash register - but perhaps it is because butcher shops aren't as common as they once were. The people were incredibly friendly and the meats are so inexpensive. I bought over 1 lb of perfectly cut chicken cutlets for just $3, this will feed me for the next week.
