Stood in line like an idiot again, until one of the staff members asked a another staff, who was wandering around, to assist me. She takes my box number, comes back and tell me to leave my name because custom hasn't approved yet. I almost lost it. Now irritated, I told her, "YOU GUYS CALLED ME AND TOLD ME MY BOX WAS READY!" I have used the United Petsafe program for a few long distance trips. I have utlizied the Petsafe program and brought my German Shepherd from Turkey to San Antonio (2008), then from San Antonio to Hawaii (2013), then from Hawaii to Dallas (2016) with no issues. I highly recommend the United PetSafe program. My dog is now 12 years old and I have had no issues. Just follow the instuctions on their site. https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/petsafe.aspx Since your pets will be going as cargo you have to call ahead of time to schedule a flight plan, get an airway bill, for your pet. For those that are military and the travel office schedules you with American Airlines, you will probably know that they (AA) accepts animals on a first come fist serve basis. That is wack. Imagine arriving at the airport and your pet cannot get on the plane due to it being overcrowded with other pets. Screw that. Go with United and you are guaranteed a ticket for your pet. You can choose to fly on the same flight path or take another flight. Your call. I personally prefer to fly on the same plane. Make sure you follow any/all local government rules for health certificates and Kennel requirements. The cargo team here processed my Stella and paperwork with ease. They will weigh the dog and kennel together and from there provide you a final cost. Not really much to it if you have all the required documents; so please come prepared. Hint, make sure your kennel is large enough for your dog. Overall I highly recommend the United Petsafe program. read more

I feel a lot of the bad reviews on here are from people who didn't read the instructions and packet from United. I will mention that I did only drop off at Honolulu so can only speak of the drop off location. I had no issues with their Petsafe program. Just moved my 60lb Rhodesian Ridgeback from Honolulu to San Fran. Drop off in Honolulu took about 10 minutes. Pick up at SFO took about 5 minutes. No issues at all and everyone was helpful. A quote from a professional pet moving company was $800 more than I paid. Yes you need to have all the documentation they mention and be sure you fit their guidelines, but their information provided on their website makes all this very clear and leaves little to question. Would definitely choose them again in the future to transport my pets. read more

Fantastic service. I was very worried about flying our 76lb German Shepherd/Poodle mix all the way to Chicago in the heat of summer, but the staff put my fears at ease. They were patient with all my questions and concerns, and went out of their way to make sure that my dog was comfortable before letting me leave. They also didn't let him be out in the heat once. He went from an air conditioned room to an air conditioned van to the plane! He arrived happy and content in Chicago. Thank you, United staff, for getting my dog safely to his destination. I was very skeptical on utilizing United PetSafe and shipping my dog through their cargo but all in all it went very smooth and would highly recommend. If anyone is in between sending their pet through United let me reassure you their cost was hundreds of dollars less than the quote I got from a pet shipping company. Not only that the dates to ship my dog were very convenient and flexible to my schedule. They were very easy to get in touch with as well! I called at least 7x before my pets shipping day just to calm my nerves about all the documents, crate size, and him being safe. I'm rating United's Honolulu Petsafe Program 1 star only because it's not possible to rate it as 0 stars on yelp. I showed up three hours and fifteen minutes prior to my dogs flight from Honolulu to Denver. I assembled their crates in the lot outside, put my dogs in, and brought them into the facility to drop them off. The workers inside watched me put the crates together, get my dogs in them, and bring them in. Two days prior to this, I received my petsafe package that had an attachment that needed to be filled out acknowledging that I was accepting responsibility for my dogs health and welfare on the trip and a requirement for a health certificate signed by a veterinarian within 10 days of their trip. My dogs had their exam three days before the flight and received a US Department of Agriculture form stating they were in good health, had a current rabies vaccine, and were microchipped. My vet also signed a form letter saying that my dogs were safe to travel and in good health. I brought all my documents in hand and checked in with the worker at the counter. When I gave the workers at the counter the health certificate, they told me that it was not the proper certificate. Their solution was that I would have to pay their on-site veterinarian to re-examine my dogs at my own cost. They never showed me the form they were looking for; I suspect it probably had the exact same information on my form, just formatted differently. Paying a vet who knows how much to tell me that my healthy dogs were still healthy, after I'd already done that, was out of the question. They also informed me that the crates that I purchased, the Petmate Compass model, which is linked to directly from United's own Petsafe website, were not approved and that I would also have to buy two new 40 inch crates from them. There was a black and white photocopy of a few crates with them crossed out that the workers kept referring me to. This document is nowhere on United's website. The workers said the crate might break if something fell or was stacked on it and that was why it was an unacceptable crate, but all the website says is that it must be made of rigid plastic and resist bending under firm pressure. There's no metric in terms of pounds per square inch of pressure, weight loads, etc just that the crate must "Be constructed of rigid plastic, wood or metal sturdy enough to resist bending when firm pressure is applied." The crates we had met each of the criteria listed on the website, but the workers refused to put my dogs on the flight in them. I told the girl there that the crates we brought were bought off a link directly on the website, but she insisted they were still not approved for flight. Since I'm military and moving, I didn't really have much choice so I had to pay for the new crates. Each crate cost 160 dollars, significantly more than they would at a pet store out in town. I called my vet and had them call United. I argued that they needed to accept the health form and they eventually relented and accepted the USDA Health Certificate, but I still had to purchase 320 dollars worth of crates to replace my perfectly acceptable crates (that I also had spent about 260 dollars on and flown my dogs in before). The entire process was incredibly frustrating, costly, inefficient, slow, and disorganized. It didn't seem like anyone there knew what needed to get done. The employees at Petsafe weren't empowered to make common sense decisions and weren't even familiar with what the Petsafe website and pre-flight packet said I needed to bring. There was no sense of urgency and no attempts to explain what they were actually looking for on the health form, just that my USDA form 'wasn't the right one.' When my wife called united's customer service to see what the problem was (I was texting her as this was all going on), she was repeatedly told a supervisor in Honolulu's cargo area was speaking to me. That was a flat-out lie, as even when I asked to talk to a supervisor, no one with any juice to get the process moving would come out and talk to me. If United wants a specific form, it needs to be included in the booking correspondence. If they want to restrict crates to certain models, that needs to be clearly delineated on their website. There's too much room for gray area and interpretation that does nothing but ruin a customer service experience when someone is already going through a stressful event and has already, at significant cost to themselves, tried to meet their subjective requirements. United needs its customers. Eventually, with enough bad experiences, people will decide that it's worth it to fly someone else, even if it is more expensive. I will never ship my dogs again with United. The only positive outcome is that my dogs made it onto the flight and to our destination alive and in reasonably good health. If that's your metric for success, there is a ton of room for improvement. read more

The worst company ever! Waited almost 15 minutes before approaching 1 of 6 people at the counter for service and she had no idea how to process a shipment. She asks another agent who emerged from the back and that agent stated that they DO NOT process bookings at the counter and that all bookings must be done over the phone. The other agents at the counter just sat at their spots. Worst thing was I was the only one in line at the time. I even handed her my ticket that I pulled form the dispensing machine when I arrived and she stated that they don't use those tickets anymore. Then why the heck have it out? Or put a sign on the machine letting customers know it isn't necessary to pull a number for service. Finally, a guy comes to my aid and now there are two customers in line. This agent seems to be the only one who knows what services United Cargo offer. None of the other agents at the counter budged. One agent came from the back to the counter to grab something near where I stood and she gave me the dirtiest looks for appearing frustrated with their service. And I had been polite about expressing my complaints to the guy that was helping me. Another male staff behind the counter had a cigarette in his mouth the whole time of my 30 minute visit. He may as well light it up since company rules and FAA regulations don't seem to matter here. Thru a door behind the counter sat a young male in his early 20's sitting in an office chair in a cubicle SHIRTLESS. At least he remembered to wear sneakers and pants. Mid way thru my visit, multiple families of the agents at the counter start to flood the waiting area. It appeared the agents were ending their shifts and their families are there to pick them up. Children as young as 3yrs old are running around and even going behind the counter fill the customer area. There were at least 8 kids total running around and playing loudly making it difficult to correspond with agent! Poor behavior and poor professionalism is an apparent notion of poor management! read more
