Ordering Experience: Placed a huge order online yesterday while I was still at work, specifying that order should be ready at 5:15pm. I got there early to pick it up, and they were happy to have me sit and read for a while while they packaged everything. Low and behold, they had the multiple party trays, rolls, soups and sashimi platters that I ordered ready at 5:15pm on the dot. I was impressed. Order was packaged very well, with reusable trays for party platters, and plenty of ginger/wasabi/soy sauce/chopsticks for the whole crew. Food Quality Etc: Food looked presentable, fish was fresh and the rolls all tasted wonderful (Added bonus of using minimal "filler" ingredients). I am personally not big on rolls, as I prefer individual sushi pieces. However, every single roll I tried (We ordered an assortment of special rolls) was palatable and made me want just a few more pieces before going back to my standard sushi pieces. This is a compliment beyond measure! Bottom Line: Bottom line is that Union Sushi takes pride in their craft and respects their customers. No need for a long drawn out review here, as this is my new staple sushi joint in Flushing hands down. Pricing: Did I mention the prices are excellent for what you get? Also, the nice lady that assisted in putting my order together offered me tips on how to place my order as to ensure I was getting the most for my money (Different menu combos that save me a few bucks). That is a gesture I greatly appreciated, and that level of respect is another reason they have earned my business. Other Comments: If you order online, you can pay by credit card which is helpful, as I hate using cash. If you dine in, it is cash only, but the space is so neat, clean and comfy, I would make an exception and pay cash as it is a very inviting restaurant. Stop in and check them out, if the delectable pictures on the wall do not tempt you into ordering right then and there, go back hungry and see what I mean. I used to frequent River Japanese Cuisine with my better half, but that place just decided they no longer had any interest in doing anything right, and after multiple awful experiences we gave up on them. Not too many places for sushi in this neighborhood unless you drive further out to buffet. So I wanted to try this place out for lunch. I got a salmon special that came with some salmon sushi and a roll. The special came with soup as well. I also got a spicy tuna roll to go. However when I got it one of the salmon pieces were slightly discolored which was slightly unappealing like it had been in contact with a freezer element for too long. Otherwise it was average. Staff was nice and service was efficient. It was pretty empty though when I went. Theres only about 4-5 tables in there though but this part of Flushif doesnt get as much foot traffic. Price is normal for what it is which is just a local sushi joint. But it looks like I may have to keep looking for my favorite. read more

This is my "to go" sushi spot now. The rolls are a decent size with a lot of fish. None of those all rice and a tiny dab of fish here. Fish is fresh and delicious and seriously inexpensive. All take out orders include miso soups. Perfect way to wash your food down. Today when we went to pick up, they gave us a little treat. One hand roll each as an appetizer. Finding relatively cheap but fresh sushi rolls can be quite difficult when it comes to New York City. I've had a few poor experiences with AYCE sushi joints in the city; suffering from either borderline rancid seafood to unbearable slow service, disappointment was the status quo. Union Sushi, though not an AYCE joint, offers affordable and good sushi. Though AYCE sushi joints charge about $25 to $30 per person, a $60 platter from Union could easily satisfy three people with enough to spare. I ordered the Special Roll Platter (S) for dine-in. Initially we were told the wait would be about 40 minutes long (damned if I wasn't determined to get my sushi fix that night!), but the food actually only took about 25 minutes to come out which was a pleasant surprise. The small platter itself is composed of 1 regular roll and 5 special rolls, running up a charge of $45. Each special roll is about $9, so this platter is more or less affording you a free regular roll. The fish itself, though obviously not Michelin-starred quality, was still quite good. In particular, the salmon was buttery but not slimy and the tuna was not oxidizing and fishy. Fish aside, Union Sushi has maybe the best spicy sauce that I have ever had. It has this strong sesame oil undertone which I think pairs wonderfully with the rolls. Other things worth mentioning are that they are quite generous with their avocados--which I love--and their mango rolls are rather decent. *Side note about mango rolls* In general, I think that mango rolls are an abomination. While I understand that tropical fruit and fish pair beautifully, I find that in a roll, the mango drowns the flavor of the fish and the fish mellows the sweet-tartness of the mango. This is only exacerbated by the fact that mangoes used are typically devoid of flavor and juice in the first place. I have always been disappointed by this dish. I love mangoes to no end. It is absolutely my favorite fruit. I love salmon to no end. It is absolutely my favorite raw fish (go Seattle!). Mango and salmon inside a roll? Forget about it. Union Sushi might just be the only exception I will make... *End rant* Altogether, Union sushi does not disappoint. This winning combination of a clean décor, affordability, and fresh sushi leaves me longing to return for a second round. I have been wanting to try Union Sushi for a long time after seeing the great reviews. Called to order during one evening and was told they sold us. I was having even more expectations. Sadly, it was underwhelming and definitely not worth the wait. At the first glance, the menu looks great - with a huge variety of sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi, and doesn't seem to be too Americanized. I ordered a little bit of everything from the three main kinds and placed my takeout order a little after 5 pm. It stated the estimated wait time of 35-50 mins when from Yelp, then I got an estimated pick up time of 6:15 pm - 6:34 pm after the order confirmation. I thought maybe it was an error (seriously, how could the wait time be that long!), I called the store at 6 pm to confirm the order and was told it still needed 15 extra minutes. So I waited and stopped by at 6:15 pm and it was still not ready. Five more minutes as I told, fine, it's almost done I thought. As I was waiting, it was past 6:30 pm and still nothing. I then noticed my order was already marked ready for pick up at 6:14 pm on the app. What! This is straight-out cheating, so I brought it up to the staff. Oh, there was zero apologies, but "what do you want me to do, I can cancel your order." I was shocked, I can't believe the level of unprofessionalism, literally zero customer service skills, like I was at fault and I should have known better. First of all, be transparent with the wait time so customers get a heads up. I could have ordered elsewhere if I have known the usual wait time BEFORE I paid. Second, be honest with the delay situation and give out realistic updates. I would not be mad if I was just told "I'm sorry but we are really busy today, it will be another 45 mins" instead of the 5 more minutes BS. Okay, let me move on to the food reviews. I haven't had sushi since summer and was looking forward to having some nigiris. Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment on the first bite, the sushi rice was mushy and in desperate needs of seasonings in every dimension - vinegar, salt and sugar were all very lacking. There was no wasabi between the sushi rice and the fish. Thank God I didn't order the chirashi bowl or I'd be staring at a whole bowl of bland rice. The sashimi was slightly better comparing to the sushi, but the tuna was definitely not a quality tuna as the texture felt loose. The super salmon roll was the best among all dishes, finally a dish with taste and flavor. Oh, just so for other Yelper's information, the wasabi is not actual wasabi as some reviewers claimed, it is the standard greenish horse radish imitation. Not sure if it was Covid cost reduction. You definitely get what you paid for. While it is affordable, it does not satisfy the authentic sushi crave. I'd stick with iki Japanese in Flushing or order from a seafood distributor to make my own. read more

I ordered a salmon bowl ($10.99) and they were generous with their fish. Some places kind of skimp out on the fish and give you tons of rice but this place was great about their portions. Their salmon was good and I really enjoyed it. I did wish it came with avocado and furikake in their bowls because it would've gave it more kick/flavor to it. My bf ordered a pink boy roll and it was pretty good! Their sizing is great, as I've mentioned. They also give miso soup with your meal and I think they do free refills which is really nice. I do wish their soup had a bit more flavor though? Other than that, everything was really good and I enjoyed my meal there. I ordered the sashimi lunch special that contained crab sticks (fake fish), white tuna (fake fish that causes cancer), rubber like salmon that was impossible to chew, and cartilage type yellowtail pieces of sashimi... out of about 12 pieces I was only able to eat 5 and had to mask the taste with eel sauce. The prices by the way, were not any lower than normal credit prices. Makes me think that this place could be a front for something else?
