    Crab Cake
    Michael T.

3.5 stars. We came in for an early dinner to try the Prix Fixe dinner. It's located on the main entrance of the Macomber Hotel in Cape May. The restaurant and what little I saw of the hotel are beautiful with plenty of elegant furniture and decor. It definitely sets a nice atmosphere for the meal. For my prix fixe dinner, I had: crab cake, salmon, and fruit tart for dessert. My friend had: scallops, short rib, and chocolate mousse. I'm a little torn. The food wasn't bad but it didn't really wow me either. I'd definitely say the food errs more on the side of style over substance. The plating of the dishes are phenomenal and are extremely photogenic; but the flavors are not strong enough. The ingredients are definitely high quality ones, I'll give them that. The crab cake had no filler and had a nice lemon taste to it. We really enjoyed the scallops appetizer which was a Ceviche style. Definitely one of our favorite dishes there. Both of our main entrees were kind of a flop in my opinion. The portion was a little small, there wasn't enough sauce or seasoning to make it interesting, but both were cooked perfectly. The salmon skin was seared and the meat was that perfect almost raw style cook. The short rib was very tender and had no bone in it at all. The mashed potatoes and the green beans were delicious and went well with the short rib. The desserts were good. I think the fruit tart might've been my favorite part of the meal. The chocolate mousse was good and sits on top of a soft chocolate chip cookie. My friend ordered some coffee to go with the dessert. He says it was very fresh and delicious. One part of the meal I do need to rip them apart for though: the bread basket. It was $7 for four pieces of bread and butter. That's something I could've easily made myself at home for half of the price. I didn't taste or notice anything special about the bread or butter that made it any different than your typical ones either. The bread basket is a complete ripoff and I really think should just be complimentary. That brings me to my next point. Maybe I'm too much of a cheapskate but I can't say I got my money's worth here. This was not a cheap meal and depending on what you get with the prix fixe, there's a chance you could still leave hungry due to the portions. I think the portion sizes need to be increased. It's still a nice place to go for a special occasion or if you want to get away from rowdy crowds. I can't wholeheartedly recommend it though. One last suggestion I want to make is to maybe add some music. I acknowledge we came pretty early during the off season. But the restaurant was pretty quiet and some music could really bring it to life. That's likely not going to be an issue during the summer season, but it couldn't hurt either. I also wanted to note that the restaurant uses the Open Table app to make reservations. It was very easy to make a reservation for this place using it. I'll end on a good note. Service was outstanding. Shirley and Laurie were very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu offerings. They did great. The food came out in a very timely fashion, both steps of our meals came almost immediately after we finished the last part.

Wow what a great place. Food was amazing and service was great. We went early and in October. Great local wine also. We will definitely be back here.

This retreat dinner actually had foie gras--what an amazing experience! Hope there will be surprises next year too!

Overall 1-star and that's benefiting from the curve of a way overpriced food scene where many restaurants are lazily coasting, otherwise maybe 1/2. The food was a solid 2-3 stars at their price point (average $50 entree). I get it, restaurants can change for bread. But if I'm charged $7 for "artisanal" bread I expect warm artisanal bread, not cold, slightly stale Acme quality bread. Our group had the foie, octopus and tartare. All ok. We each had a different entree and they were all just ok. Salting was a little off, mostly under. My lamb was tasty but not worthy of $50. It is described as sitting on patatas and romesco. Most diners with experience in Spain would have trouble identifying that as "romesco." I don't know if Chef Schatz was out for the night but the kitchen needs to pick up their game. The server provided a bad 1-star experience. His demeanor was rude. He reminded me of a retired middle school teacher that most students didn't like. Zero flexibility whatsoever. Did not introduce himself. He refused to take any food order until we ordered everything. No exceptions. Every interaction with him was cringe-worthy and unpleasant. Despite booking as a birthday celebration and being acknowledged on arrival as a birthday, dessert came and went, nothing happened. Other tables had a candle on a small tart. Ultimately, he said the "birthday woman" didn't order a dessert so she didn't get anything from the house. I addressed all with one of the owners on the way out. His response, "I'll address it with the server, we'll do better next time and make sure we don't have the same server." I dropped $500 last night (6 people, no alcohol), so feel some feedback is due.

and a succulent lobster tail, was a culinary masterpiece. The evening culminated with a decadent Creme Brûlée, presented with a celebratory birthday candle. The dessert was a delightful conclusion to a truly memorable dining experience. Throughout our visit, we were graciously served by a kind and attentive waitress, further enhancing the overall enjoyment.

So happy we selected Union Park after seeing their ad on the Cape May Ferry. Everything was wonderful. We were seated in a quiet corner of the restaurant, our server was terrific, and the 3-course dining option was a treat. We loved trying different appetizers such as the tuna tartare and beet salad. The twin 4 oz. lobster tails with saffron risotto was a delicious second course as was the filet. Plus, we absolutely love being able to bring our own wine. Enjoy!

Hmmm, so we picked this restaurant by process of elimination. Meaning, waits were too long every where else! BUT, we were ecstatic how good the food and especially, the service by our server, Liz. First course, crab cakes were spectacular! Second Course; I had the Shortribs, although tasty, it definitely needed the signature demi it's usually braised in. Creme Brulee finished out tasting and ot was very good. Thanks for a great dinner. Definitely coming back Chef Vince

The odyssey to finding it was well worth the effort. We had dinner reservations but on a Monday in May, probably did not need them. We both loved our flounder almondine order, despite it being a Monday night (when one does not typically order fish and expect it to be fresh). This really was! Service was top-notch and super-friendly from Jared, who was deeply apologetic when the oyster appetizer we ordered failed to appear - he comped a beer without prompting (and insisted upon it). Even absent this gesture, his attitude and manner made our evening - the excellence of the entrees was a cherry on top. One note and not the fault of the restaurant at all - a number of families with small children were dining at other tables. This is not an especially well-suited restaurant for families with under-5 kids. Their collective noise and behavior was more akin to, well, a Chuck-E-Cheese or MacDonalds. There was nothing anyone could do, of course.

Asked us if we minded sitting on the inside deck. We did mind and were then show to a table inside the restaurant. (If we had our kids with us, then I would have not minded eating on the deck). The table was an awesome tucked away corner table that faced the inner dining room. The decor and experience were top notch. I'm glad I said no to eating outside. The room is absolutely beautiful if you are into vintage looks. I said it looked like Gaston's Tavern. Food and waitress service was good. My sister had the short ribs and they were tasty. I had a burger well done (and it was!) with both fries and a side salad. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and felt it was a good value for the cost. Love, Nicole

After finally finding a space, we walked up to Mad Batter, where there were already a number of people standing outside. We were a party of seven, so this wasn't looking good for us. Well, we had a Thanksgiving miracle. They had a table ready for us in less that ten minutes! The food and service here were both very good. I had the crab cake sandwich. It was very mild in flavor but still good. I recommend it, but I'll try some of their other offerings before I get it again. My sister-in-law had one of the specials, the Fried Tomato & Cracked Black Pepper Bacon Sandwich. She and my brother agreed that it was messy but delicious. The lobster mayo set it off nicely. Our server was really friendly and accommodating. She made sure we were taken well care of. We pointed out an error in the check, and she was very kind in taking care of it, and gave no attitude. The worse possible service ever! TO THE OWNER: Please…read moreremind all waitstaff to ask customers about any allergies before serving food, to ensure their safety and prevent any potential harm. I ordered the harvest salad with candied walnuts. I have no idea what candied walnuts are, so I wish the waiter asked if I had any allergies because they can SOMETIMES contain cinnamon in it and I am allergic to cinnamon. When the salad came out I started to eat the salad and noticed my throat starting to feel funny. I didn't mix the salad well so I just ate the arugula with the sauce and the chicken. Half way through I noticed there were walnuts and I took a bite of it and my throat immediately started to swell and I can feel my face and tongue getting itchy. Thank god I have my allergy medications on me, but what if the next person this happens to doesn't... We immediately told the server about my cinnamon allergy and the waiter looked at me like I was joking because I ate half of it and then asked me "So you're done with that?" and I said, "Yes I can't eat it anymore, I'm allergic to it and it's contaminated with everything else. I felt my throat starting to close up, but I am okay because I have my allergy medicine. " He asked if I wanted anything else and I said no just a hot tea to help with inflammation. I appreciate that the server was trying to help us out, but he still came back with the bill and said the owner is still going to charge me because it says candied walnuts on the menu, implying that it's my fault...I really expected this place to have better service, but looking at past reviews I can see how this place has overpriced underrated food and terrible service. They don't care about their customers and certainly just focused on making money. Hopefully after today they include that their candied walnuts have cinnamon in it! Or at the very least ask the customers if they have any allergies beforehand

The Positives: I have to give credit where it is due as the food and drinks were genuinely great. We ordered the calamari, celery root soup, scallops, and the chicken breast. Everything came out delicious and perfectly prepared. The drinks were also a highlight specifically the pomegranate margarita and the winter sangria. The bartender clearly knows what they are doing. The Service: Absent and Unprofessional. Unfortunately, the night took a sharp turn regarding the service. Our waitress was virtually non existent. She spent the entire night chatting with another couple, barely sparing a moment for our table outside of taking the initial order. It got to the point where the bartender had to do the waitresses job. Our drinks were sitting on the bar for quite a while until the bartender finally walked them over to us, saying, "I just wanted to drop these off so they wouldn't sit out." Later, we watched the bartender go into the back and run food to the other couple, the very table our waitress was busy socializing with, telling them he, "just wanted to bring this out so it would still be hot." The bartender was acting more like a waiter than our actual server was. Sketchy Billing & Atmosphere: Things got even stranger when the check arrived. We noticed a $24 charge for a "cheeseburger"--an item that isn't even on the menu. We flagged down the waitress, and before we could even explain the issue, she immediately said, "Oh yes, you are right, there is an error, sorry about that." It was an incredibly odd reaction; she knew there was an error before we even vocalized what was wrong. To top it off, the dining room was absolutely freezing. When we asked why, the waitress claimed the heat was broken. However, upon visiting the restroom, the heat was pumping just fine. It felt deliberate--like a corner cutting measure to save money during the off-season rather than a genuine mechanical failure. Overall: Despite the food being delicious, the terrible service, the suspicious billing "error," and the uncomfortable temperature make this a place I cannot recommend. For the price point, you expect a certain level of professionalism and comfort, and Ebbitt Room failed on both counts. I will not be returning.
