This is definitely a place that will sneak up on you. I was a little skeptical of a breakfast sandwich that wasn't in between a bagel, but these are some of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. They use potato buns from a local bakery and balance out their sandwiches with a perfectly proportioned Siracha mayo. This place was so good that it quickly became a weekly tradition. To top it off, the staff is absolutely incredible. Extremely welcoming people that want to make sure your experience at this neighborhood grocery is the best you can get. Really great people selling lots of local products. The homemade chocolate chip cookies are the bomb.

So I'll start off with saying the prices are ridiculous, paying 13.99 for a sandwich then having that same price for a 6 pack of beer. Also the service could have been better along with the ambiance. Felt like I was confined to a small area the entire time. I would NOT recommend this place at all unless of course you wanna pay 50 dollars for a simple meal that you could make at home for 10 to 15 dollars. I will always and forever love this UKG location. It's the perfect corner store with great coffee/espresso (no extra charge for oat or almond milk!), great pastries, and delicious sandwiches and salads. For celiacs like me, they clearly label all of their gluten-free offerings and provide a gluten-free bread option for sandwiches. Union kitchen not only has great selection of wines and snacks but also has one of the best sandwiches in DC. The sandwiches are all on amazing bread with shredded lettuce YUM!! My go to is the buffaloes chicken or BLT avocado sandwich. Both are huge and could be two meals. Also the caps grilled cheese is delicious! It's hard to dislike what they are doing here! They have specialty grocer and sandwich shop focusing on "local." Planters for their herbs grown on site, and outdoor seating to come! Inside, they lady from a local bakery giving samples of her delicious baked goods. All the sandwiches looked good! I opted for the italian, which is a few cold cuts and pesto spread in what seems like a Lyon bakery nine inch roll. It fell a little short of my expectations. I specifically asked if it had enough meat in there relative to the bread...and the guy said yes.. my photo will show you.. it surely does not! The tastes were there...the pesto is great but just too bready. The grocery is expensive, although that's not surprising... it's not Giant, so don't compare it, but with Giant a mere two blocks away, I'll hardly be buying their barilla pasta for $6 or their pickles, which are also sold at Harris Teeter, a mere five blocks away. Lunch combo for $12 adds chips and a bottled drink to the $9 sammich. Instead get the house-brewed Earl Grey iced tea, I recommend it highly even tho it's $2.75 all by itself. I tried the spicy tuna. That nine dollar sandwich is on a large fresh bakery bun (not from a plastic bag), good amount of fish, topped with a hot green Padrón pepper relish, lettuce, tomato and onions. Great bread! Great spice! Friendly people at the Union Kitchen Grocery but there's only one person making sandwiches, so if a few people are ahead of you it takes a little while. Goofy variety of groceries here. The produce cooler looks a little dehydrated, they also have dried pasta, beer and wine, plus really great looking fresh croissants and cookies. Vegetarian rating: 3 stars, the menu offers a cucumber, beet, feta, pepper & sprout sandwich on whole grain slices, very good. Plenty of veg and vegan snacks and groceries on the shelves too. Six stools and a bench at the front window so you can dine in if you choose lol. Also a tiny patio out back with picnic tables, but just how badly do you really want to sit next to their garbage cans? They use Square to check out, which means no printed receipt and by default it asks for a tip. When I step up to a counter and take my food away over the counter, neither sitting nor lingering, I am irked by the expectation of a tip. read more

I've been coming here for sandwiches, etc. for about three years now, but I wanted to leave them a review for the wonderful COVID-19 shopping experience I had last night. None of the grocery stores in this area have had flour or baking soda in weeks, so I popped in to see if UKG did. Lo and behold, they had bags of King Arthur flour for sale out of their own stockpile! I lamented to one woman working there that they were out of baking soda, which I needed for banana bread, and she gave me a small thing of it out of their own stash ("Just enough to make about two loaves of banana bread," as she said.) Another worker also ground my coffee beans for me at checkout - another nice touch. I was happy to see they have gloves at the door for shoppers, just another layer of comfort during this rather uncomfortable time. I've always liked coming here for specialty foods, but given the level of cleanliness and friendliness I saw last night, I think they deserve a special shoutout for providing another grocery store option during this pandemic. read more

Super excited to have this place right around the corner from me! I was biking to get breakfast down the street and decided to stop here instead.. The gentlemen inside said they opened about a month ago. Breakfast is 8-11 and then they start serving delicious sandwiches. I had the turkey club (with avocado!) and it was awesome. The bread that they use is amazing- as well as whatever spicy sauce they use. Along with sandwiches and coffee, they have a local selection of beer and other products- ice cream, candy, jams.. I can't wait to come back without my bike so that I can buy more than just lunch! Knocking down a star, because they've stopped carrying lots of products that they used to have, and have started carrying more "big name" products (instead of small or local businesses). One of my go to weekday coffee spots. This location is on a cute block in Capital Hill. Love the friendly baristas and the coffee is great! They brew Compass Coffee here and also have a nice selection of pastries and breakfast sandwiches. I've gotten lunch here twice and haven't been super impressed. I definitely don't recommend their pre-made salads. I also don't grocery shop here but have browsed and as others have mentioned, it's quite expensive. They have some cute DC themed items and cards which I've bought as gifts and it seems like they do a great job supporting other DC small businesses by selling their stuff! I was a little disappointed after visiting this spot that has been so long awaited in the neighborhood. A small, self-serve nitro draft iced coffee is $5. Large is almost $7. With the wide assortment of places selling coffee in the neighborhood, I am not sure how they can get away with charging that (Buttercream, Smoked and Stacked, and La Colombe are all within a 3 minute walk and have great iced coffee). I see this place as being conducive for buying specialty local products such as beer, dry goods, baked goods, handmade cards, and jams and spreads. They also carry ice cream from Ice Cream Jubilee which I could see myself buying as a treat sometime without having to travel to Navy Yard. I could also see myself getting hot food to go on a night that I just want to stay in and not cook. But I definitely don't think it will be a place I frequent too often due to the prices. Go into with the expectation that this is a bougie, expensive grocery with some cool foodie type stuff. This is the place to get your fancy cheese or quickly grab an avocado in a pinch. Not a place to do general grocery shopping or you will end up dropping an absurd amount of money like $8 for a loaf of bread. Some of the staff are nice, some are not. I went in once asking if they had chia seeds and the employee treated me like I had 5 heads. You work in a bougie gourmet grocery so get with the program and don't act like I'm crazy when I ask for some bougie foodie shit. The 'needs improvement' - The breakfast sandwich was a huge disappointment. For such an upscale place, they can do better. For one, they use the fake rectangular block of egg you might find at a McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts. Use a real egg. Melt the cheese properly. The bagel however was decent. This little neighborhood market has it all! Fresh fruits and vegetables, charcuterie, cheeses, snacks, wines and mead. They also have a few bulk items like couscous and quinoa by the pound. Prices are not outrageous for the quality offerings. This is a nice alternative to Whole Foods and the place to build a perfect picnic. Once the weather warms up, I can see this becoming my go to spot for local, specialty ingredients. It's nice to have a one-stop-shop to find local food finds and gifts (they have some really cute tea towels and letterpress cards). The sandwich and salad bar also looks fantastic. This place is a nice vacation from all the hustle and bustle of Union Station. It's situated on the corner of 3rd and F and if you're not careful, you'll miss it. Let's start with the good: they make a darned good BLT, the bacon was crispy and thick cut, nice peppery arugula, fresh chewy artisan bread, topped with avocado which adds a nice creamy touch. However, it comes at a cost! An arm and leg to be more precise!! Now, for the meh... When you step up to the counter to order, there are instructions to fill out the order form and leave it in a basket for the guy making the sandwiches to read and make (I'm sure I missed a step). Whatever you do, DON'T TALK TO THE SANDWICH GUY or you'll be firmly but politely reminded to please read the sign and use your best handwriting. When you walk into the corner store, you're usually greeted by a display of local organic honey or some other natural food store goods. The shelves are stocked with goods that you won't find in your local super market unless you're specifically looking for them (trust me they're there). Things such as Harissa and jarred anchovies that are marked up at least 20% higher than what I pay at Giant, or Mom's. They sell a decent expensive chocolate chip cookie. It goes good with the organic milk they probably have in the fridge for 30% higher than what the supermarket 3 blocks away sells. All and all, it's a quant lil specialty store. You're definitely paying for the more intimate shopping experience. Some of the people that live in the neighborhood have informed me that they aren't as thrilled to have the convenient corner store as neighbors, apparently the cute little outdoor eating area was never permitted. Since moving to DC from NYC about 3 years ago I have struggled to find that good "go-to" sandwich spot. Well, look no further! Union Kitchen grocery has a phenomenal menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, great coffee (shout out for having Oatly Oat Milk) and delicious + fresh baked goods. They also keep a water bowl + dog leash hook outside so it's a great place for your pooch to hang while you run in. The staff are so friendly and very nice. I would come here everyday if I could. I would normally give this place 5 stars but I was so annoyed with the young white male barista with glasses the other day. Me: 'hi may I have...' Him: 'OH MY GOD. I am always impressed with each of their abilities to produce a quality latte- no matter who makes it. Perfection in the espresso shot, and perfection in the steamed milk. Wonderful. It is the new corner grocery store and will give Capitol Market a run for its money! Union Kitchen Grocery has a fridge full of beverages, including Stumptown cold brew and a local almond milk producer! They also have some fresh produce - they even have RIPE avocados! They have a lot of jams, seasonings, etc. They have frozen goods like cakelove, ice cream, frozen dumplings, frozen Mason Dixie biscuits - all good stuff - just a little on the pricey side. Union Kitchen Grocery is open from 8 AM - 9 PM every day. Even on Sundays! What I like about this place is that they serve breakfast, lunch, and soon they will be serving dinner! They even have benches outside - I can't wait! They have some options for their breakfast sandwiches. I can only remember the one I also get - goat cheese, egg, and bacon served on a croissant - DELICIOUS! for $5.45 (?) For lunch, they have a variety of sandwiches: Tuna salad, chicken salad, a veggie option, and cold cuts. I think the sandwiches are around $8-$9. While they are a little heavy on the bread, the combo of flavors is divine! They also serve coffee! And have almond milk! We have been doing Union Kitchen once a week for lunch during COVID shutdown. Sandwiches are great (chicken salad is my favorite)- made with fresh ingredients and good sized portion. Store is well stocked with other small grocery items. Store is limiting the number of people inside, requiring masks and providing gloves for people who want to shop. Staff is always very friendly.
