I said ok so can I order something else and she said again we are closed. Why do you close an hour early because you ran out of wings??? Your a pub not wingstop or wingpub you have other items. I'll just be at work and my mind will drift off into a wistful daydream of the beer and wings at Union Jack's. That's how good this place is. The wings would be worth a visit on their own. The amazing beer list would be worth a visit on it's own. Together, though, it's like. . .I don't know. I don't have the words. My chest gets a little tight thinking about it. These wings, you guys. These fuckin' wings. Crispy, never soggy no matter how much sauce they're coated in. All of the sauces we've tried so far (we're slowing working our way through the list) have been really great. I think our favorite right now is Thai Hot. Besides the wings, the rest of the menu is pretty good. Fish and chips are great. They have a variety of typical bar food, and some more pub-style stuff like bangers and mash. Both fries and chips are great. The sandwiches are pretty good! I haven't had one that wowed me, but, you know, whatever. The beer list is top-notch, too - absolutely better than you'd expect to find in the 'burbs. It rotates frequently, but they generally seem like they try to cover all the bases; not too IPA-heavy like other places can be. Staff is always friendly and helpful when we visit. I stopped in for a late lunch yesterday as I was blowing through the area on business. Comments from my Yelp Mobile App about the great beer list drew me in. Immediately a huge negative as I discovered they are cash only. The bartender told me this is a small chain of four locations. Not taking cards in this day and age is stupid, idiotic, and just plain bad business. If I want a beer and a burger I have numerous other choices that take my plastic. Regardless of my Yelp rating, unless they have naked Victoria's Secret models behind the bar, I'm taking my business elsewhere. Now that I have vented about the lack of plastic I had a nice time. Danielle was my bartender and unfortunately she was not naked. However she was friendly and efficient. The beer list is decent with about 22 taps. Great crafts were about 6 bucks which is fair. I ordered the Cajun Burger which was billed as a monster 8 oz. burger for $7.99. I upgraded to fresh-cut fries for an extra $1.50. The meal came out quickly and was delicious. I love it when an establishment serves fresh-cut fries and these were excellent. Regarding the "monster" adjective for the burger; it just seemed normal or maybe even a little small. As long as you have cash this is easily a three star place and probably three and a half. I'm going to award three stars and I WON'T be back. I'll just take my business to the competition until the owner comes to his senses. read more

Yes, the wings here are amazing! Meaty, flavorful, and fried to a crisp! So many different flavors available too! Apparently, their hottest wings get very hot, but I didn't opt for it. I did regular hot and I was able to handle it very well, so next time, I'll up the heat level. I also did southern country, which is like a garlic butter, and it was not overly oily and super crispy. So good. What also shines here are the fries! Fresh cut fries! We got a large order and just killed it. Fried perfectly, just like their wings. They also have roughy 20 beers on tap, all quality beers! With a server that checked on us periodically, it was an overall good dining experience. I am definitely returning. The place isn't huge, so I wish it could've been a bit bigger. And the parking lot is small as well, so be prepared to park a block away and walk if need be! Trust me, it's worth it. And bring the green - this is a cash only establishment, but they do have an atm on premise for your convenience. read more

Burgers, wings & beer oh my! That's what you get at this small local's bar. This is a plain no frills watering hole with a nice, ever changing craft beer selection and FANTASTIC wings. This is a hard place to review for me because I totally love it but I tend to over look the things that others won't like. The booths are small an uncomfortable & it's not always the cleanest place. The cash only policy bundled with an ATM that doesn't always work would turn most people away. I guess it really depends on what your expectations are. I like that this is an old school bar that has character and still feels like a place that doesn't frown on blue collar guys saddling up after a hard day's work. I have had a lot of fun watching sporting events at UJ's but they don't have that many TV's. I don't suggest bringing your children here. It does have seating away from the bar but it's still more bar then restaurant. If you're a connoisseur of wings, make sure to give Union Jacks a try. read more

Everyone knows that the wings are good here so I am just reminding people that they have a lot of other great stuff. The fish and chips are the best I've ever had. Well, the chips are fine, but the fish is cooked to perfection every time. I've now tried it four times in the last three months and it's always the same. I love consistency in a restaurant! Pork belly sandwich! Huge and perfect. And the specials are always amazing. I usually get soup if it's on the special menu and it's always interesting and homemade deliciousness. The only reason I took away 1 star is because the french onion soup has let us down every time. Always too salty, too thick, and slightly burnt flavor. My husband and I are regulars here. We went in for lunch and it was just god awful. I ordered the beef vegetable soup and I get that they were super busy but at one point my husband goes maybe they forgot bc it took so long. I swear the waitress was either forgetful or overwhelmed bc she didn't even acknowledge the soup came after our wings came out. The soup was terrible. The vegetables were crunchy , raw and clearly frozen veggies. The wings were a hot mess as well. We ordered 20 wings and we got 19. I told the waitress and she brings back one wing in this huge basket which quite honestly seemed like the kitchen was doing that on purpose because I complained. I also ended up giving my husband my wings bc I was just over it. I then asked the waitress for a bag for the wings. She went in and out and in and out of the kitchen several times with no bags and didn't even look in my direction like she forgot that quickly. I then went to the bar area where they serve takeout and just asked another waitress for the bags. My husband and I have two favorite waitresses/bartenders there and I swear every time they're not working the food and service suck. I most likely won't be going back again after today. read more

The service is great though and the people that are regulars are really nice and respectful. Its great to watch sports games because the regulars are all friends and get kinda loud but its a great atmosphere. We don't live far from this place and go here at least once a month. Server - 50+ year old - was frustrated we put in an order of wings before entrees and clearly put the entire order in at once- all while going out of her way to say "it's slowing down so we shouldn't be as busy, food shouldn't take that long." When we finally got our food, the entrees had clearly been done for a while and we were waiting on the wings. I have to deduct one star for their Philly cheesesteak egg rolls. Got take our, and for $9.99, you get 2, not 3. They were burnt but inside was stone cold. I threw them away. I've lived in London before for almost a year now, and what I miss most about it is the pub culture. The idea of having that hole in the wall place that might be a bit dirty, might have a few creepers, and might smell of stale beer... but is still dear to your heart. In London I had the Hobgoblin (see review of that!) Here, in Glenside, I would say Union Jacks is the closet thing, in this area, that americans have gotten right about pub culture. It has a decent selection of beers, usually changing their draft beers every so often, and very typical bar/pub food. Comfort food for the man next door type of place. read more

The best craft beer selection in the northwestern suburbs of Philadelphia. Though to the surprise of many, beer may not be the greatest thing associated with this Pub. It's the wings. Believe the hype. Grab napkins, beers, and prepare to get messy with some of the crispiest, sauciest, tastiest, whatever "iest", wings in the area; get em' hot. If you've got the grapefruits, go for the suicide sauce. Parking can be a problem, but it's worth it. The crowd is young and it's a great place to watch an Eagles game in the burbs. read more

Most of the content of my previous review still stands, and I do love Union Jack's. But like any relationship, you begin to notice faults after a while, and what once seemed like a minor quirk can become seriously annoying. First of all, the draft list has been sucking for a long time. Rather than six or seven great beers, there are usually one or two decent draft beers these days. The bottle selection is similarly unimpressive. Also, I find it annoying that the kitchen closes pretty much whenever the hell they feel like it. You can buy fried foods after the grill shuts down, but that too is subject to the kitchen staff's whim. And even when everything is operational, the menu is pretty limited. I've gotten used to the whole cash-only Philly experience, and although it's inconvenient, I live with it. I can even accept the inevitable fees of a foreign ATM machine. BUT if you're not going to accept credit cards and force your customers to use an ATM machine that will charge outrageous fees, at least offer an ATM that actually WORKS!!! On at least three occasions, I've gone to get money from the UJ's ATM, and the piece of crap is down! I occasionally trek to the Blue Dog Pub in Lansdale (review forthcoming) and it's there where I really see the limits of UJ's. Blue Dog is a similarly suburban/uncool bar that basically does everything better than Union Jack's: better food, dessert, good coffee, better drafts, and a ridiculously expansive bottle selection. I'm generally frustrated with Union Jack's because it's obvious that they're phoning it in. Almost every aspect of this bar could be improved. I find it amazing that the place where I've had Russian River's Pliny the Younger TWICE could devolve so much, but sadly it has. Hopefully, this will change with better beer and more consistent food service, but the place has gone down hill while others have improved. read more

The handcut English chips are great. My favorite two wings I like to order are southern country and Thai hot. I tried the Cajun wings expecting more of a Cajun dry rub but it was just a shit ton of hot sauce topped with Cajun seasoning. Majority of the reviews raved about the wings, and they're amazing. The sauce and seasoning wasn't overbearing, the wings are crisp and not slimy inside. The inside bar is kinda small so we sat on the outdoor patio, great for smokers. The drink and food is priced competitively. My only concern is the stairs leading from the patio to the parking lot. They don't meet regulation and after a few drinks it could be a problem. Service was great, our waitress was outgoing and met all of our needs. I would have given this place five stars but the waitress charged me incorrectly. For a dive bar, I was impressed overall. read more

UJ's is a really good neighborhood place. I live an easy walk from here and it's a convenient place to duck in and meet a buddy for a drink and some good conversation. Positives (why I keep coming back): They have 20 or so beers on tap, mostly craft beer, which is great. The wings are great! I highly recommend Tex Mex. Nuff said there. If you follow on Facebook they post their draft list once or twice most weeks so you can see what's on tap. Negatives--Remember, I'm a regular patron and overall, I'm a big fan, but here's my constructive criticism: I wish they would be more selective in the beers they put on tap. Sometimes there are several great American Craft Beers (Stone, Founders, Russian River, Victory) and Belgians (Duvel, Chimay, Affligem, etc) to choose from, but other times the list is filled with beers from mediocre breweries (Long Trail, Yards, Boddingtons, etc). I'd just like to see there be a consistent base of great beer, and only mix in Watermelon Lagers and Oyster Stouts when there are plenty of other options for people who like beer to taste like beer. Cash only is annoying. I'd rather pay another quarter per beer and be able to use a card. There's no excuse for not accepting credit in this day and age as most people would be willing to pay a little more for the convenience, but a bigger gripe is that the ATM is out of service a lot lately. If you run a cash-only business, you've got to make sure you have a working ATM. Lastly, I would recommend investing a bit in improving the state of the parking lot. There are deep potholes (though not as bad as they used to be). Most importantly, the lot needs to be thoroughly plowed and salted when it snows. Someone (drunk or not) could literally break their neck slipping on the ice I've seen there in the last two winters. read more

Union Jack's would have gotten a solid 4-stars from me if they hadn't enclosed the patio. It was the only place I new of in Glenside where you could drink beer outside on a nice day. Still, the two times I've been there it has been a nice place to relax. Several real beers on tap, tasty wings, friendly staff, and a non-obnoxious crowd. Now that the Blue Comet is gone, this will probably be my first choice if I want to go out in Glenside - not that there is a ton of competition! The bottom line first: Great little bar. Good food, nice service, and way more beers on tap than I can get through in one weekend. My wife and I stopped in here for a Saturday lunch. I had read about the wings and wanted to give them a try. The only wings I have had that were better are my mother-in-law's. She does not make them often enough and now that she lives in Florida, Union Jack's is my go-to place. They offer several different sauces, and not just the normal Barbecue, mild, medium, hot, and burn through the plate choices. I got the Cajun sauce, which I have not even heard of at other places. Just too good for me to properly describe. I also got a burger. Again, more choices than I would expect in a little bar. I got the one with pork roll on top of the beef patty. And not just a thin little slice of pork roll. It was thinker than the thick Taylor pork roll we get at the market. Great combination. I tried three of the beers that they had on tap, and enjoyed each one. It seems that they change them often enough to keep everyone happy and not get bored. The service was great. Even though there was only the bar tender taking care of everyone, I never felt that we were not taken care of at our table. One time I went to the bar to get another beer and she told me that she would bring it to my table. I was more than willing to wait for it, but she told me that it was OK and to sit and enjoy myself. Union Jack's has sponsered my basketball team for the past few years. We try to go there after each game for food and some drinks. They've always been good to us! The servers are always kind. Their wings are freakin awesome. I've had their quesadillas a few times, too, and I could eat them all night! Old bay fries with cheese are a killer. All of the food I've ever eaten here has been awesome! Unfortunately I haven't tried all of their beers. We usually just get pitchers of lager (gotta replace the calories we just burnt off, of course!). They have an outdoor section, too that's screened off (or has plastic or something to keep it warm). We usually sit out there and watch games that are on. The only thing wrong is their horrible parking. The parking lot sucks, but there's usually street parking on the sides. I don't even try the lot (and that's during the week). read more

I wish I could rate a 3.5 here, but I digress. I love the Union Jack, don't get me wrong, but it isn't without it's flaws. They basically have the best draft list in the area most of the time and the food is decent with the wings being the best around. It's a neighborhood bar, so the crowd is as such, not to upscale, but not terrible. I've been going there twice a week for a year or so and I still dig it. However, the beer list does come and go. Some weeks there will be a good six beers on there that I love. Other weeks though, I'm lucky if there is one or two. The real problem is that they sometimes get caught up in similar styles, so it's all IPAs or all stouts. I like them both, but I don't want to drink either all day. The only other problem is that it is cash only and the ATM is crap. I agree with some other reviewers; I would rather pay a little more and be able to use a credit card than depend on that ATM.
