Around the back is the entrance to this unassuming Italian restaurant. Its cozy and simple with rustic wood accents. 6-8 tables and an ample bar for maybe 10. Mckelvey was my bartender/server. She was sweet and welcoming. She mixed a terrific Negroni! Backpedaling a bit. I arrived at 6 and by the time my cocktail was in front of me there was a wait. I was disappointed with the apps.. all fried..I'm sure delish but I wasn't in the mood. I had Utica beans and kale (had the hot pepper symbol but not at all spicy ) $16 with a side meatball $6 and sausage $6. Portions were generous and the atmosphere was lively. This was our Valentine's Day dinner experience near our lake house. Although this restaurant does not usually take reservations, they did for this particular Friday evening. When we arrived the place was packed, but sure enough, our table was waiting. First came water. Then our server Lydia came over to ask for our drink order. Because I was driving back home, I only wanted one craft beer for the evening. My wife was having wine. We each ordered the Caesar salad, which was half of a Romaine lettuce sliced lengthwise dressed with cheese and dressing. It was tasty, but a lot of food. I ordered the fra Diavlo seafood pasta with rigatoni. My wife had one of the specials, which looked a bit like beef on weck without the sesame seeds. Mine was good, but not all spicy like I was expecting. Hers was actually quite good. Both were loaded with garlic, which seems to be a staple of this place. Because it was a Friday evening and the place was packed, the noise level was quite high. This was especially true because behind me were two large tables of noisy diners. Once they left it was back to a more normal level. Our server Lydia was terrific. Overall staffing was quite good. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Well go back! read more

Fresh pasta available. Their service was prompt, food came out quick enough on a Monday night with about 50% capacity. The calamari was delicious with some added fried carrots sprinkled in there. The fruti de mare was slightly spicier than other places I've tried but still decent flavor. I wish there was more pasta without sacrificing the seafood ratio. Their lemon mascarpone cake was fluffy with with mascarpone in between their sponge like cake/Angel cake. Ps. What a great find in this area! The restaurant is really small though so don't be surprised if you have to wait if it's super busy. We came on a Saturday night and thankfully we got the last two seater. There were quite a few flies flying around which was annoying. The place is very cozy, and we came when there was a live piano player too. We ordered the Caesar salad the whole, and my it may have been too big. They literally serve you the whole head of romaine lettuce, which is a lot of salad when you actually cut it up. The flavor was really good though. I ordered the clams with fettuccine cooked in a bianco white wine sauce and it was delicious. I was disappointed that the clams were so tiny though. They had no meat in them. But the flavor of the white wine sauce was delicious. My husband ordered the fruti de mare with their daily fresh pasta which you could definitely taste the pasta's freshness. He thoroughly enjoyed it too. Overall, great find. Would highly recommend. read more

Update: I'm glad I gave them another try! I had the special Mac n cheese (with shrimp and spinach) tonight and it was absolutely delicious! The bruschetta is SO TASTY and of course, the garlic bread is to die for with roasted garlic cloves in the basket. Everyone enjoyed their meals and many had leftovers to take home. I also enjoyed a local beer on tap. Bonus: we ordered a piece of cake for a birthday in our party--the only choice was lemon coconut and it was some of the best cake I've ever had! Our first visit to Union Block. I had the chicken picatta. It was perfectly lemony, buttery, salty, with capers. The only thing I could have wished for was a steak knife to cut it. The side of mashed potatoes was smokey, plentiful, and delicious. Their vegetable side was zucchini and yellow squash, cooked perfectly and it had melty crusty parm cheese over the top. I'm so mad I didn't take a photo, it was not only delicious but looked great too. We arrived at 5:50 on a Thursday and the place was hopping. We came here for a birthday dinner to have fresh pasta which was AMAZING! The dishes were spicy, but my husband and I love spicy food so our meals were perfectly to our liking. Possibly the worst dining experience I ever had . After being seated with a party of three we waited ten to fifteen minutes for a server . We ordered drinks which never came and entrees which came in a rushed 5 minutes . Our waitress was sitting down at the next table and when I inquired with the food runner about drinks , ground pepper and parmesan she replied it wasn't her job ? I did find a salt and pepper shaker on the bar and water but thats all I got . They seemed annoyed I cancelled my drink order after I finished my meal but that would be there financial loss not mine . At least the waitress was comfortable . Wonderful service and appreciated the owner saying hello upon arrival. We are probably not the best reviewers for Italian food because we are used to New York City Italian, red sauce and other authentic Italian recipes. We didn't love the sauce, not much flavor, and the meatballs didn't have any either. We left much of it uneaten. But again, that's our taste. The veal parm was very disappointing ($36 too). I should've known because it came out in all of five minutes and was clearly reheated because it was very tough and overcooked. Ice cubes in drinks were perfect size and amount. Don't think we'd return, but there are not a lot of choices in Penn Yan for Italian food and the people here were very nice and the service was very good. read more

This place is fantastic. Get there early to grab a set in this cozy Italian eatery or expect a wait. Superb service, and excellent food , very tasty - worth it. Traveled from PA to enjoy the finger lakes region and just happened to have found this small eatery for a evening dinner. They serve fresh bread with Parmesan cheese and roasted garlic to spread on top. We also had the vongole , clams in the blanco sauce , along with freshly made bruschetta. For mains we had chicken parm over rigatoni pasta , and also chicken Gorgonzola over penne pasta. All of which were fantastic. Great spot, great eats , we will be back next time we visit the area. The food was excellent we were greeted garlic bread which is outstanding and the roasted garlic cloves were a nice edition. We started with the Fromaggio Frito. It was a great version of fried mozzarella. We the. Had Chicken Parm, with pasta and the "long sauce" which was tasty. They don't take reservations but they have a "no wait" list on Yelp. On the drive there, I checked yelp and it said there was no wait. I kept checking it periodically on the way there (it was a 15 minute drive) and 5 minutes before we got there it updated to a 25 to 30 minute wait. I was annoyed but joined the waitlist anyway. When we arrived, 2 other groups of people walked in the door in front of us. The hostess seated both groups- neither of which were on the wait list. She then greets me, I tell her I'm on the waitlist and she says we can sit outside, otherwise its a 45 minute wait. I didn't want to sit outside because it was very cold that night. (and we had never been there before so I didn't even know it would be an option). We decided to sit and wait, however I was confused and frustrated because what is the purpose of waitlist if walk-ins are going to be seated before the people on the list? It doesn't make any sense. We actually only ended up waiting about 10 minutes - because the hostess had no clue what she was doing or how to figure out how long the wait would be. She was telling people who came in after us it was an hour wait and then seating them after 10 minutes. We both ordered the full size pasta, which was a very large serving. The food was just ok. Nothing that I would want to return for. The service was also just ok. read more

Down a flight of stairs from the Water Street Wine Bar on Water Street. There is parking down below, right near the restaurant, but the entrance to that parking lot is well before the restaurant and, by the time our GPS told us we had arrived, we missed the parking lot entrance. I think you want to enter the parking lot when you see the sign for "The Landing." The best thing I ate was the lemon ricotta cheese cake with caramel sauce. I licked the plate clean. And my husband loved the canoli. I loved the house salad. I had the half sized portion. We appreciate that the chef is expert at utilizing a variety of herbs, which I tasted in the house salad as well as the other dishes. My husband and I loved the free cheesy garlic bread. Excellent service by Madie. I loved the beets in the beet salad but didn't care for the salty gorgonzola cheese, and the greens had too much dressing. The bruschetta was good after I pulled off most of the red onion and garlic slivers. I loved the shaved parmesan cheese on the bruschetta, which was not melted. If you love red onion and garlic, you will love the bruschetta. Very tasty, and the toast was delightfully crisp. read more

I ordered this food for takeout prior to them opening so that when I arrived, it would be fresh. Unfortunately when I picked up the food and arrived at my Airbnb, which is three minutes away from the restaurant I was welcomed to soggy and cold food. The chicken Parm tasted like frying oil, and the sauce had absolutely no flavor. The complementary garlic bread was the best part of the meal, in that I didn't even finish the chicken Parm. The pizza resembled a frozen flatbread pizza. it wasn't very tasteful aside from the pleasant fresh basil. If you're a visitor to this area, I do not recommend the food at this establishment.
