At least once a year, my husband and I get out to Undergrounds Coffee. It is a unique and wonderful space. They have St. Patrick's drinks available and I ordered the Irish one and Phil got the thin mint one. I tasted both and they were equally wonderful, but I stuck with what I ordered. Great flavor. We also bought a bag of their Golden Girls whole bean coffee for home. The murals in the bathroom are elite. One day, we will get here for breakfast because the full menu looks great. read more

This place is awesome! Best breakfast Sandwich I've had in a long time. I was a little sad it was deli ham instead of carved for a $10 sandwich but once I started eating it, life was good. I do find the coffee to be a little more bitter than I typically like and prices are pretty high, but every single little detail of the concept of this place would keep me coming back. The parking is a little tough if it is busy since the lot is tight and there isn't a lot of parking. I got a salted caramel dark hot chocolate which is seasonal. Since today's event had to be rescheduled we needed to find another new spot for coffee and this was it! A really neat spot with some fun breakfast options. I got the Ralph Wilson which was a very good basic breakfast sandwich. My fiancé got the Tim Russert which is a breakfast sandwich on a cinnamon roll, which was an ideal combo for him. The only thing he didn't love about his sandwich was that the bacon was not very crispy at all. He actually ended up just picking off the bacon which made it better. This was my first time trying Undergrounds and I am very happy with it. I ordered the Ralph Wilson which was an egg and cheese on my choice of an everything bagel. The cheese and egg were perfectly melted together on the bagel. The bagel wasn't the most toasted and I would've liked it just a bit more but still great! The shop itself is a great building and is very clean and welcoming. It was also great to mobile order ahead and just be able to go pick it up. That came in handy on my road trip that morning. My friend had told me about this hip, chill, vibe former converted funeral home into a coffee house. The atmosphere was relaxing, and did certainly pay tribute to awesome people in a unique way. They even have a roastery coffee club, merchandise, signature coffee/latte drinks, and offer gluten and are vegan friendly. The inside has two seating areas, but is limited right now due to the pandemic. Its recommended to order online, their app or at the location. The staff were friendly and didn't mind me asking the one question that puzzled my mind: how long it operated as a funeral home,the staff and my friend confirmed since the 1970s ,with two different owners, prior to rezoning for the coffee house. Some family and I went kayaking from South Buffalo to River Works and back on a beautiful Sunday morning and paddled up an appetite for breakfast. They told me I needed to try one of Undergrounds Coffee House and Roastery's breakfast sandwiches and were they right! We arrived around 11am on a beautiful Sunday morning and parked on the street. Walking up to the entrance, we saw a few tables outside as well as plenty more inside. Walking up to the counter to place our order, I was really surprised with how large their food and drink menu was for what seemed like a small operation. The crew working was bustling, doing a nice job making and putting out orders. After placing and paying, we had to wait by the counter for our name to be called to pick up our order. It took a few minutes, but they were making everything to order so we didn't mind at all. Once we had our breakfasts, we grabbed a table outside and enjoyed each other's company and people-watching. When we were ready to go, we had to bring our metal trays back inside for the crew to wash and re-use. For breakfast, I ordered a medium coffee with almond milk and The Colonel Francisco breakfast sandwich, which was egg, sausage, pepper jack cheese, house-made apricot chipotle spread, sandwiched in a toasted asiago bagel. The coffee was excellent, I could taste the extra attention they put into making it - I probably didn't need to add almond milk to it as there was plenty of flavor already. My breakfast sandwich though was excellent! The star of this sandwich was the apricot chipotle spread, I nice hint of spice, rich and creamy, full of flavor. I would love to try that on some of the proteins I have for dinner at home... The asiago bagel was great too, really enjoyed the flavor and it wasn't too "bready" and chewy. The size of the sandwich too was great with plenty of "fillings" and plenty of cheese. I very much appreciated the generous amount of apricot chipotle spread on both the top and bottom of the bagel. I've seen Undergrounds Coffee House and Roastery on Yelp before but never realized where they were (they're actually across the street from one of the better Buffalo pizza places - Carbone's!). I enjoyed the atmosphere and thought the coffee and food were great! This place is crack! The coffee is delicious. I love the seasonal flavored drinks they make. The breakfast sandwiches make you forget you should eat lunch. I love that they have so many options for everyone. Gluten free? They got you. Vegan? They got you. Lactose intolerant? They got oat and almond milk for that. Love love love Undergrounds. They have the most unique setup! In their "past life", the building was a funeral home. They opened as a coffee shop not too long ago and kept the vibe by the name of the place, offering a mug club with images of celebs that have passed away, and the designs/artwork. My favorite coffee is the Kenya pour over. My favorite sammie is the Teddy Roosevelt. They also carry baked goods from local business Blue-Eyed Baker - their scones are the sh!t. Just before covid, they came out with their online ordering app. Thank goodness! And they have stayed open during this shutdown (reduced hours), but, as an essential worker, they've been the only place I can count on to grab a coffee. They're location is convenient and right off the thruway. Parking is a bit of a struggle with their small lot but I can usually find space in there or on the street. Undergrounds Coffee is a pretty hip place in the first ward and near the Larkin district. This makes for a pretty diverse clientele, which is cool. Their food choices seem *bomb* with tons of bagel sandwiches and breakfast bowls (I've only had the oatmeal) and they have nitro cold brew/kombucha on tap. Their chai latte is one of the best in town. What's also great is that it's women-owned! The roastery club also seems like a good deal. I'm loving the death theme and gorgeous artwork, but what's with the sugar skulls? And they're plastered all over t-shirts? I'm assuming that the owners aren't Mexican, so what gives? The día de los muertos skull is a sacred, religious symbol that has survived centuries of colonization. I'm not knocking Underground's appreciation of it, but the commodification is off (when it's on t-shirts and mugs, other products that they sell).... But still, they're a small business so... I don't know what to think? It would be great if they could put up some sort of educational sign about día de los muertos and the significance of these skulls to show their appreciation of that culture. It's not the kind of cultural appropriation that would make me stop coming here as the lines are always blurry, but it's just weird as things are set up right now. read more
