My friend was talking about Uncle Tetsu all day because we were nearby and as soon and she mentioned fluffy Japanese cheesecake I was all in! Uncle Tetsu, first of all I'd like to say its in a great location in Arcadia, in the Santa Anita mall which is always usually great for parking. The service I get from the workers are always very kind and friendly which I do appreciate. My most recent visit i was helped by Celine. What great customer service she gave! The food here is great for desserts or a snack. The lines here can be on or off. Sometimes the lines and wait can feel very long while at other times there is no line and wait. The Japanese cheesecake is very light/airy with a nice light flavor. As we like to say "not too sweet" I'm also a big fan of their ube cheese tart which I suggest you give a try, has a lot more flavor than their cheesecakes. I didn't end up ordering anything but my friend did! They had samples of the black sesame flavor and wow, it was so good! I'd want to try their panda coconut flavor. As someone who isn't a fan of regular cheesecake, this is so much better! My friends surprised me with the Oreo one for my birthday. It was really tasty and light. The Oreo was mostly in the top half of the cheesecake, so it didn't over power the actual cake. It is a small place and depending on the times it can either be really busy or empty. read more

I recently discovered Uncle Tetsu at the Santa Anita Mall. My aunt wanted to pick up a few cheese cake and I went with her. It's the July 4th weekend and they are running a special with 4 cheese tarts for $16. I picked a couple of original flavor, one Ube and one matcha. All of them taste good. Not too sweet. It's interesting that the original flavor has the strongest and fullest tastes when compared to the Ube and matcha flavors. I look forward to trying their cheesecake. This is one of my favorite Japanese cheesecake place. Been coming here since they opened. They're conveniently located inside the Santa Anita mall near Nordstrom and Ding Tai Fung. It used to be only $10 a cheesecake, but it's now $13 due to inflation and such. Tried one of their new flavors, black sesame, today. It wasn't that good. Reminds me of their coffee flavor that also wasn't good. The original one is still the best flavor, hands down. Oh well, it was still worth trying. Also got their mini cheese tarts, original & ube, at $4.50 each which is also kinda pricey. Both were pretty good, the original one is slightly better than the ube one. It is cooked Japanese style which is lighter as compared to their other basque cheesecake options. For $14 it could serve 8 people and came packed cutely in a special bag and box. They have a bunch of different flavors so I hope to try them next time! We ended up getting the original which was fine since we planned on trying it anyway. In my opinion, a lot of the other options lack flavor, so the original are always my preferences. - The Original Cheesecake is fluffy, airy, and not too sweet, making it great for all ages. However, if you prefer cakes with a heavier flavor, this might not be for you because it's extremely light. The texture resembles a sponge cake, not a traditional cheesecake. - If you want something closer to a traditional cheesecake, the Burnt Basque Cheesecakes are quite similar. They don't have a the graham cracker crust, but the texture of this cake is TO DIE FOR. It's so creamy and decadent, I think I like it even more than the Original Cheesecake... SERVICE/AMBIANCE: Although the interactions are brief with the staff here, I've never encountered bad service on any of my trips here. It's a little stall tucked next to Noodle St and Din Tai Fung, and the simple menu makes it easy to decide what to order. Plus, they do stamp cards here! At 6pm today 12/26/24, I went to buy cakes. The waitress at the front desk was a foreign girl named A. Her service attitude was very bad and she seemed very impatient. I have been there many times and every time and the previous sever who severed us was aJapanese girl's service attitude was very good. Today because of A my whole day is ruined, especially on holiday. I bought two cakes just to ask her to pack them separately and she responded by rolling her eyes. This was a storefront in the mall and it had a short line to order. We decided to go with the original cheesecake, ube, and matcha flavors. Coming from an Asian family where the parentals are not big fans of sweet dessert (I know lots of folks can relate! Rather, the cheesecakes are fluffy and even has this moistness to it. Not to mention, Uncle Tetsu has multiple flavors and changes them here and there! As a family, we've tried the original, matcha, ube, strawberry, matcha, and black sesame one. We have yet to try the basque cheesecake. I will say, like many places, the prices have increased. Therefore, that has been a factor to not buying it as often as we used to. Nonetheless, if you have not tried Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes, you must give it a try! As the hype has died down a little & the overall experience is now super breezy (walk up and order and get your goodies without having to wait an inordinate amount of time), it's time for an update! Their menu has significantly expanded with various flavors like chocolate, strawberry, matcha. My local friends have HIGHLY recommended the new burnt basque cheesecake offering (Meet the our take on this European classic! Coated with a caramelized exterior that serves as a natural crust, our Burnt Basque Cheesecake is made of a super creamy interior with a lemony, custard-like center.) It was fantastic! In true Uncle Tetsu fashion, it was soooo light & fluffy. My family also really enjoyed the lemon-y notes. They also have an Oreo basque one which is probably phenomenal as well. I also ordered the black sesame because I love all things black sesame! It's very subtle but enjoyable. In comparison, this definitely was more like a light fluffy cake vs the divine texture of the basque. Last notes - *temperature - my family and I like it best right out of the fridge (vs eating it room temperature) even though you can eat it either way. *cost - two of these 6" cheesecake ran about $30. It says they're made fresh. I asked the cashier if it was fresh since she just grabbed one and put it in a bag for me. I guess we have different definitions of fresh. Anyway. The service is great. That's why I'm giving two stars. In my honest opinion, this thing is over priced. It's based on location, presentation and hype. Was it good? Yea! Was it worth $12? No way! I can get just as good satisfaction from an .88 cent donut. It's in the Santa Anita mall and the box and bag it comes in is cute. So that's why you get that price tag. Quality ingredients? Maybe. The lines have died down since my last review, but the cheesecake quality has remained consistent. I've had them a couple times more and the different flavors of cheesecake that they have now definitely have kept them interesting. I tried the limited pumpkin-flavored Japanese Cheesecake and it was perfect for the fall season. It definitely tastes like pumpkin pie, but the texture is so fluffy! My coworker first introduced me to this bakery and I was finally able to have one again. I had intended to go to a restaurant at the mall for a late lunch but the wait was ridiculous at 2.5 hours for a table and 1 hour for to go orders. We went to another place around the corner and as I sat down I saw in the near distance, the glimmer of Uncle Tetsu. There was no line, which I hear is uncommon. They had so many flavors to choose from and I wish they did offer them in slices so I could try them all but alas these are only sold as a whole cake. I ended up getting the original which seemed to be the most popular. The texture is so dense but still light and fluffy.
