We came for lunch during the week, and it was quite busy here. I had the Uncle Sam Special Steak and it was pretty good. It was like a Philly cheesesteak minus the extra cheese but has extra veggies. It also came with a generous portion of fries. You order at the counter and the food was ready within five minutes. There was ample seating and it was very family friendly. I fucking love this place man. The quantity to quality to cost is BEYOND worth it. Out of the many times of ordering here not once have I ever been disappointed in the slightest. Not kid friendly. Don't support this place. My 15 and 12 year old walked to Forbes Ave to get lunch together the other day and were told that they could not eat in the establishment after ordering. I went into Uncle Sam's today on Forbes after 5 years to pick up food for friends. I ordered 2 bags of fries which were $3.37 each and received a half a bag of fries. When I asked to fill up the bag, a rude man (manager?) with glasses said that's what we always put in. I got a refund and went to McDonalds and got fresher and more fries at a better price . Stop resting on your laurels when maybe years ago, you were good. But now no longer. There are much better restaurants with better food, prices and customer service. Move on! read more

My partner craves this place. He loves the bbq chicken sandwich. I usually get a turkey, hot, because it's cheaper. Eat in the place so you get free fries with your sandwich. You have to pay for fries to go if you get take out. One star off because it's CASH ONLY. I never carry cash, but there is an atm inside if you want it. The atmosphere is nice. Used to go here all the time and got the same thing every time (vegetarian combo sub). Went back for the first time in years today because I was craving my old sub and was really disappointed. The quality and general sense of care seems to have plummeted in the past couple of years. Not one employee could even fake a smile, I felt like I was bothering them. Then when I got my sub, that i've ordered 1000 times before, it did not have all the toppings that were listed on the menu. no lettuce or tomatoes, I feel like those are hard things to miss but whatever. When I approached the counter to order, the person running the cash register seemed kind of confused. I had to repeat myself a few times. I ordered a salami and cheese sub with extra meat then asked if I could upgrade my regular fries to sweet potato fries but they wouldn't allow that so I ordered additional fries on top of the ones I didn't want that came with the sandwich. The whole fry situation is out of control. First, you can't pay to upgrade. Second, if you get your sandwich for take out then the fries are not included. Third, if you don't finish your fries while eating there then they don't allow you to bring them home. Fourth, they are so strange about their fry policy that they don't allow you to wrap any of your other leftover food at the table in case you decide to stick some of those fries in the bag; you have to bring it to the counter. These fries are not government secrets, guys. The security measures are a bit much. The sandwich took quite a while to come out and despite having asked for extra meat four times when ordering, it had maybe three slices. The sweet potato fries did taste great and the atmosphere is fine. The people working there though really don't care unfortunately. read more

Great sub shop. Had the buffalo chicken cheese steak with lettuce and raw onions. It was delicious; spicy buffalo flavor which the lettuce helped cool off. Roll was soft and fresh although a little big for the amount of meat. I was happy when Forbes location opened back up after the pandemic. Started going there daily for lunch. However, on 1-29-24 I ordered a sub and fries. Asked for a bag for my sub and fries. Knowing I would not be able to finished eating all my food. A tall white male, with red hair gave me a bag. Then after placing my fries in the bag he snatched the bag out my hands aggressively and threw it to the ground. I asked to speak with the manager who did nothing. I felt threatened and unsafe. I remember uncle Sam's from when I was Attending school in Oakland, we used to frequent that location often. I had a friend visiting from out of town, and they just wanted a simple sub, we did drive out to the shady side location. I must say the Philly cheesesteak was very good, very tasty, the only complaint that I have is that they are under construction and do not have tables or restrooms. Have been here a few times now. I like this place a lot! The cheesesteak and chicken cheesesteak are both great. The hot Italian sausage was also surprisingly good. Great for picking up and having a picnic in the park. Totally agree with the reviews that mention getting the "Ultra" versions probably isn't usually necessary, since the portions are already pretty big- full size sandwiches are definitely splittable if you're coming in with an average appetite. Sometimes the ingredients are a little less than fresh, but cover that up with a bunch of cheese and sauce and honestly, it really doesn't matter. One might argue that's the point of a cheesesteak anyway, so this is really just an acknowledgement that Sam's keeps it true-to-form. Overall, among the best cheesesteaks I've had anywhere! Gives Philly a run for its money. I keep getting food to-go and haven't tried the fries yet- something to come back again for. read more

OVERALL: amazing fries (choose the dine-in option to get them for free) and good sandwiches. Service is slow and it's cash only, but there is an ATM in the store and a PNC nearby. I'm not a huge fan of sandwiches, but this is one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. I'm a HUGE fan of their fries, which are delightfully crispy. I usually have to stop myself from finishing all the fries before I even get to my sandwich! They also give you an enormous amount of fries, which come fresh and hot. The sandwiches themselves are also good. I usually get some form of the Italian sandwich, which has flavorful meat and a good serving of vegetables inside them as well (lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions). However, I do have two qualms about Uncle Sam's, which is that it's cash only and the service is pretty slow. I usually only carry my credit card with me when I go out, so when I crave sandwiches and don't have cash, I have to unfortunately go elsewhere. The service is also relatively slow - my boyfriend and I once waited 15 minutes for two sandwiches, when we were the only people in the restaurant besides one person who had already gotten their food. I actually can't believe that I have never written a review for this place. My husband and I go every Friday the 13th. Plus more days :) We LOVE the cheese steaks. Seriously best cheese steaks in Pittsburgh. We usually get them to go in which case you have to pay for the fries. If you eat there the fries come with your food. We have been to a lot of the Uncle Sams locations but Squirrel Hill is the best. Parking is a pain but we deal. They have high chairs which is great if you bring a kiddo. read more
