5 of us ate here for lunch and it had Excellent sandwiches and nice atmosphere. The only complaint was we didn't realize that all the sandwiches come with fries and they didn't tell us that so we got several extra orders of fries which were wasted. The chili was great too! Highly recommend! read more

We came for lunch during the week, and it was quite busy here. I had the Uncle Sam Special Steak and it was pretty good. It was like a Philly cheesesteak minus the extra cheese but has extra veggies. It also came with a generous portion of fries. You order at the counter and the food was ready within five minutes. There was ample seating and it was very family friendly. I would come back and try other sandwiches next time. read more

I fucking love this place man. The quantity to quality to cost is BEYOND worth it. Out of the many times of ordering here not once have I ever been disappointed in the slightest. Each time the college kids working are always nice which is another plus. Uncle Sammy raised them right !! Inside is like a bigger and nicer subway if that makes sense.. I think it does It's just a solid hoagie and fries and when you're in the mood for it this is such a great pick. Good bread, decent meat, and INSANEEE sweet potato fries read more

Very classy ambience, delicious fries and subs, couldn't ask for a better restaurant. The people are nice too and they except all payments.

Friendly staff, quick service and delicious meal. We ate the steak salad which came topped with fries and yummy croutons. There was a generous amount of steak as well. Plenty of seating in the restaurant which made for a relaxing break during a busy day. read more

Food: okay, not great not bad. Sandwiches decent somewhere between the quality of subway and Publix/primantis Service:not great. Every time I go there and order for 2-3 ppl total it takes at least 2X the acceptable time. Today the skipped my order about 6 or 7 times until I walked up to ask what was going on. Other times they've served ppl who were behind me in line first.. they need to work on a way to correct this read more

Not kid friendly. Don't support this place. My 15 and 12 year old walked to Forbes Ave to get lunch together the other day and were told that they could not eat in the establishment after ordering. My kids had to leave with their food. Fortunately, the Coldstone Ice Cream store down the street let them in to eat their food there. Thank you Coldstone!!! Shame on you Uncle Sams!!! This place takes kid's money and then kicks them out onto the street with a handful of food. read more

I went into Uncle Sam's today on Forbes after 5 years to pick up food for friends. I ordered 2 bags of fries which were $3.37 each and received a half a bag of fries. When I asked to fill up the bag, a rude man (manager?) with glasses said that's what we always put in. I got a refund and went to McDonalds and got fresher and more fries at a better price . Stop resting on your laurels when maybe years ago, you were good. But now no longer. There are much better restaurants with better food, prices and customer service. Move on! read more

My partner craves this place. He loves the bbq chicken sandwich. I usually get a turkey, hot, because it's cheaper. Eat in the place so you get free fries with your sandwich. You have to pay for fries to go if you get take out. One star off because it's CASH ONLY. I never carry cash, but there is an atm inside if you want it. The atmosphere is nice. They have cute little window seats. Nice people work there. One of the cooks yells out jeopardy answers while the tv is playing. It's really funny and feels laid back. read more

When I approached the counter to order, the person running the cash register seemed kind of confused. I had to repeat myself a few times. I ordered a salami and cheese sub with extra meat then asked if I could upgrade my regular fries to sweet potato fries but they wouldn't allow that so I ordered additional fries on top of the ones I didn't want that came with the sandwich. The whole fry situation is out of control. First, you can't pay to upgrade. Second, if you get your sandwich for take out then the fries are not included. Third, if you don't finish your fries while eating there then they don't allow you to bring them home. Fourth, they are so strange about their fry policy that they don't allow you to wrap any of your other leftover food at the table in case you decide to stick some of those fries in the bag; you have to bring it to the counter. These fries are not government secrets, guys. The security measures are a bit much. The sandwich took quite a while to come out and despite having asked for extra meat four times when ordering, it had maybe three slices. The sweet potato fries did taste great and the atmosphere is fine. The people working there though really don't care unfortunately. read more

Uncle Sam's Submarines - Paid for double meat salami and cheese sandwich. It was meager burned meat but I ate it anyway. It was just with great sadness. - Sandwiches Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Used to go here all the time and got the same thing every time (vegetarian combo sub). Went back for the first time in years today because I was craving my old sub and was really disappointed. The quality and general sense of care seems to have plummeted in the past couple of years. Not one employee could even fake a smile, I felt like I was bothering them. Then when I got my sub, that i've ordered 1000 times before, it did not have all the toppings that were listed on the menu. no lettuce or tomatoes, I feel like those are hard things to miss but whatever. The sandwich was nothing like I remembered and a lot less filling, likely due to the missing toppings. Don't think i'll be returning. read more

Best subs in Pittsburgh for the last 40 years. The Special Italian is an all-time favorite. I miss the Oakland location...

Great sub shop. Had the buffalo chicken cheese steak with lettuce and raw onions. It was delicious; spicy buffalo flavor which the lettuce helped cool off. Roll was soft and fresh although a little big for the amount of meat. Sub came with shoe string French fries which were cooked to perfection just the right amount of greasy salty crunchy potato to make your mouth water for another one. read more

I grew up coming here. It was my favorite. It has finally come to the point where I won't come back. It's awful. Employees act entitled. You're lucky to get your order in without feeling guilty for interrupting their iPhone time. All sodas tasted expired. I live 3 blocks away and will be driving to fox chapel if I want uncle Sam's again. It's very sad. read more

Hi there fellow Yelpers! We've been coming here for a while now several times. Their sandwiches are great if you like the colder style of sandwich that isn't toasted. Love the Italian sandwiches from here it's a classic! The main reason for the one star demotion is the lesser than usual friendly pittsburgh service that is usually present throughout the rest of the city. It's a no frills place that gets your sandwich done in a tasty manner so if you're ok with that, recommend d stopping by and grabbing a sandwich while you're in squirrel hill near all the other tasty Asian food! read more

I was happy when Forbes location opened back up after the pandemic. Started going there daily for lunch. However, on 1-29-24 I ordered a sub and fries. Asked for a bag for my sub and fries. Knowing I would not be able to finished eating all my food. A tall white male, with red hair gave me a bag. Then after placing my fries in the bag he snatched the bag out my hands aggressively and threw it to the ground. I asked to speak with the manager who did nothing. I felt threatened and unsafe. What restaurant snatches food out of customers hands in a intimidating manner. I will never spend my money again in Squirrel Hill Uncle Sam's. The men are hostile, aggressive and have terrible customer service. Now I see why they went out of business before. Terrible customer service. I will never return! read more

Love this place! Parking: Can be tough in the Squirrel Hill area but generally something opens up. You can also find something a block away on one of the side streets. We actually walked here from our place in Greenfield! Facilities: It's in need of some TLC but I think that's also part of the experience. A lot of the original features still exist here. Service: Not necessarily the friendliest bunch but they also aren't rude! They just aren't super bubbly individuals and that's okay . Food was prepared and served quickly! Food: Delicious! My wife and I shared the Ultra Mushroom Cheesesteak and ordered an extra basket of fries. Love their fries! One of the many great local spots that Pittsburgh has to offer! read more

I remember uncle Sam's from when I was Attending school in Oakland, we used to frequent that location often. I had a friend visiting from out of town, and they just wanted a simple sub, we did drive out to the shady side location. I must say the Philly cheesesteak was very good, very tasty, the only complaint that I have is that they are under construction and do not have tables or restrooms. I'm sure that they will be up and running soon, but as of this week, they were not. read more

Have been here a few times now. I like this place a lot! The cheesesteak and chicken cheesesteak are both great. The hot Italian sausage was also surprisingly good. Great for picking up and having a picnic in the park. Totally agree with the reviews that mention getting the "Ultra" versions probably isn't usually necessary, since the portions are already pretty big- full size sandwiches are definitely splittable if you're coming in with an average appetite. Sometimes the ingredients are a little less than fresh, but cover that up with a bunch of cheese and sauce and honestly, it really doesn't matter. One might argue that's the point of a cheesesteak anyway, so this is really just an acknowledgement that Sam's keeps it true-to-form. Overall, among the best cheesesteaks I've had anywhere! Gives Philly a run for its money. I keep getting food to-go and haven't tried the fries yet- something to come back again for. read more

Walked in at 5:30 for a turkey sub, mentioned my order to the cashier and an employee making other orders said "sorry we're actually closed". Surprised me since they're sign says they close at 6pm daily. If it were 5-10 minutes before their closing time, I'd understand, but if I were the owner, I'd be pretty mad knowing employees are turning customers away. Been a lover of Uncle Sams since 2004 in Oakland but after a few other mistakes at the Forbes location, it's time to stop going. read more

OVERALL: amazing fries (choose the dine-in option to get them for free) and good sandwiches. Service is slow and it's cash only, but there is an ATM in the store and a PNC nearby. I'm not a huge fan of sandwiches, but this is one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. I'm a HUGE fan of their fries, which are delightfully crispy. I usually have to stop myself from finishing all the fries before I even get to my sandwich! They also give you an enormous amount of fries, which come fresh and hot. The sandwiches themselves are also good. I usually get some form of the Italian sandwich, which has flavorful meat and a good serving of vegetables inside them as well (lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions). However, I do have two qualms about Uncle Sam's, which is that it's cash only and the service is pretty slow. I usually only carry my credit card with me when I go out, so when I crave sandwiches and don't have cash, I have to unfortunately go elsewhere. The service is also relatively slow - my boyfriend and I once waited 15 minutes for two sandwiches, when we were the only people in the restaurant besides one person who had already gotten their food. Despite this, I still love the place, and will definitely be back! read more

Elevator Review: Great subs. Great sandwiches. Surprisingly great fries! I am a huge Uncle Sam's fan (and so is my 4 year old!). While their big sellers are the cheese steaks (which are great!), I personally love a hot turkey sub (hot turkey, grilled onions, cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato). The bread is fresh and the ingredients always taste high-quality. And I have to give credit to the folks behind the counter - they keep things moving and the wait never seems too long. I only have two issues: First, the cash-only policy is inconvenient. Second, I sometimes have to hunt for a clean table. read more

They refused to give me the free fries on a dine-in order (I called ahead for dine-in, so they claimed it was take out even though I made it clear I was staying there to eat). I actually can't believe that I have never written a review for this place. My husband and I go every Friday the 13th. Plus more days :) We LOVE the cheese steaks. Seriously best cheese steaks in Pittsburgh. We usually get them to go in which case you have to pay for the fries. If you eat there the fries come with your food. We have been to a lot of the Uncle Sams locations but Squirrel Hill is the best. Parking is a pain but we deal. They have high chairs which is great if you bring a kiddo. read more

I absolutely love Uncle Sams!! These subs are massive and super filling though, so make sure you come hungry. The sandwiches all come on 12 inch(Ish?) hoagie buns. As far as I know, you can't get 6 inch sandwiches. They have a lot of options for vegetarians as well, and those options aren't boring! Both hot and cold subs available, and they also have a veggie burger sub which is my personal favorite. You get a choice of cheese on each sub and also lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. They ask each time so it's best to think it over beforehand. The subs are served with fries and the fries are some of the best fries in town. They are shoestring type fries and go down like air which is a delicious yet dangerous combination. They are deep fried in peanut oil, so those that are allergic should be advised not to try them. They also have waffle fries and sweet potato fries. I still love the regular fries the best, however! There is a seasoning I love to put on them by the counter. Definitely recommend! read more
