    Meatball hoagie, Miller Lite

No frills little slice of Pittsburgh history. I had the hot sausage, my son had the footling chili dog. We both loved it. My sandwich just melted in my mouth. Soft bun, great flavor. Really sweet ladies behind the counter, divey atmosphere (in the best way possible!) Sure, you could have a fancy frank up the street, but this place is worth a try if you like old-school authenticity. I'll definitely be back. Update 2023: this place still rocks. It rocks my socks off. Had the meatball hoagie for the first time, it was great. I will always crave the hot sausage, though. A meatball hoagie and two beers only cost $11.50(!!!!!!) I can't believe I'm not here all the time.

Such a great hot sausage sandwich. Meat and onions and peppers piled on a bun. Man that sandwich was so good. Been so long since I went there but definitely won't be that long until I go there again. It was $6.76 for the sandwich and I thought that was kinda high but it's still the best hot sausage sandwich around.

So...here's the thing. This is not a place you come for dinner. This is a place where you come to cheat on dinner. I have had this place bookmarked for a rather long time and have finally had a chance to visit. I am a hot dog fanatic and am always in search of a good frankfurter. I have noticed this place hasn't gotten much love in terms of reviews, and some of them aren't the most favorable, but I still had to visit. Walking up to the place you may hesitate a bit. This place is not glamorous in the least. In fact it looks run down both outside an in. To me, that gives this place some legitimacy. If you can serve a mean hot dog (and sandwiches) and have a steady flow of customers, who cares what this place looks like. It kind of reminds you of a dive bar, but with some of the best food around. When you enter you are greeted by the counter where you can order your food/drink. There is a small menu written in chalk above. It's not a huge menu, but if you are coming here you kind of already know what you are going to order. Thing to note, CASH ONLY. Don't show up with a big order and think I'll put it on a card, have your wad of cash ready. Once you order you can then move yourself to the seating area. Worn in tables surrounded by chairs that are haphazardly placed in this space. There is also a bar area where you can enjoy your meal. I don't know why, but I lulled for a bit. I stared at the menu even though I already knew what I wanted. I let the person that came in after me order his food so I could scope out how the ordering process goes. Didn't want to place the fool here. Finally, time to order was here, if not I would have to wait until the pack of construction workers came in. I stepped up and without hesitation order myself a foot long with chili and cheese and of course a water to wash it down. Just so we all know, eating a foot long hot dog with chili and cheese is not the easiest, nor cleanest thing to accomplish. So I sat my dignity aside and dove into this monster. Just enough toppings that it didn't mask the hot dog itself. This foot long had a bit of a char to it even though it was made on a flatiron. Like it was sitting there, waiting for me to order it. That salty crispness of the casing followed by the juiciness of the innards, yum. Then add the slight spice of the chili and cheese and it was magnificent. I had a tear in my eye. I thought that was a sign until I noticed to my right that they were in the process of cutting up onions and the aroma was in the air. Will I be cheating on dinner again? Of course, this place is more for snacking than a meal, but it was oh so satisfying.

You like traditional goto, must have, sandwich from Pittsburgh? If you do, this place is for you…read more This place was started by Joe Primanti in 1933 to feed shift workers from the local warehouses (coal and iron) and railroads. They are known for big sandwiches which now includes fries and cole slaw. The sandwiches provided value to workers...who were looking for a place to feed themselves to keep their energy up for a long shift. When you sit at the bar and you can only imagine the workers that sat here to feed themselves with what little they had. They found a sandwich between two pieces of soft Italian bread with a good balance of meat, cheese, cole slaw and fries...think energy and value. The history here is real and intense. Would I rate this as a culinary destination? Not particularly but I would say it's a must see to be part of US history as the town righted itself and came to life. The sandwich? I had the pastrami with cole slaw, egg, fries and tomato on Italian bread. Remarkably, the sandwich was light...despite it sounding heavy. The cabbage and tomatoes bring a great balance to the sandwich which makes it messy and remarkably light. Be prepared to get messy..so eat fast! I am probably talking too much about the sandwich...just go try it. The food is probably a 3.5 but it gets the extra .5 for the amazing history there. The service was great...well educated on the product, accommodating in every way. If you are in Pittsburgh, this is a must try.

I had to go across the street to use the restroom because theirs were nasty. It required going down a steep set of stairs, and the women's bathroom floor was wet. There was also a bucket catching brown water dripping from somewhere, which was pretty concerning. The wings and onion rings were just average and didn't really stand out. There are newer locations of this restaurant that I'd recommend instead. Based on my experience, you'll likely have a much better overall visit at one of those locations

We chose to go here instead of making the drive to Chick Fil A on McKnight Road for milkshakes. My daughter & I noticed 1 worker handling food with no gloves on, pulling her hair back to a bun then proceeded to handle the food without 1. Not washing her hands after she handled the food and 2. not putting gloves on to handle the food. I politely asked the employee, do you wear gloves to make milkshakes. She responded, yes we do and she was very polite about it. The other worker came and asked her what I said and she told her. The other worker came to us with MAJOR attitude taking our milkshake orders. She proceeded to say to her co-worker, please pull my hair back because I don't want to hear anyone BITCHING about it. My daughter said, Ma'am, my mom just asked if you wore gloves because she was handling food, she pulled her hair up and then she handled food again without washing her hands nor did she have gloves on. The young lady became extremely upset and shouted.....I AM NOT TALKING TO YOU. At this point, both my daughter and I were shocked. The conversation became heated because we were explaining we asked a simple question and she was very upset, uprupt and rude about how she responded to the situation. I then asked for the manager, she stated she was the manager. I said can I have a conversation with you. She stated 'no you cannot' I am done with it. I asked her, how can you not address a issue that needs to be addressed. She stated again, I'm done talking about it (VERY RUDELY). From the time she started making the milkshakes her attitude was off. And boy, from the taste of the shakes you can tell. They were not good and extremely watered down. There is so much more to this encounter. Such as shame. So much for NOT going to Chick Fil A. We will take the drive the next time. Manager could use managering skills. I'm still so upset.

You have to try one of the signature sandwiches (various meats topped with coleslaw and fries and amazing, thick bread). Something to note is that this isn't a creamy coleslaw. In fact, on its own it doesn't have much flavor (mostly just pepper) but it somehow pairs well with the sandwich. The downside to this location is that they aren't exactly the best at table turnover/cleaning tables and the restaurant itself doesn't feel spotless (like some other locations do). But in a way, it kind of adds to the vibe of the place. There are several parking garages and also on street parking nearby. Nice that it has late hours most evenings (since a lot of downtown restaurants seem to close fairly early). Definitely worth a visit.
