The chowder is a very tasty, traditional New England clam chowder.

But I stopped by midday and inquired, learning that about half the tables are first-come first-served and if I arrived around 5:15 I'd get in with no wait. A bit early but that's what I did. By 5:45 it was completely full and I heard the hostess telling arrivers of 60 minute waits. Very popular! And for good reason. La Bella Vita was as close to perfect as I've seen in some time. The hostess did some quick checking and soon found me a high top table for 4 in the semi-enclosed patio (wood stud walls, metal roof, plexiglass panels keeping out the chilly wind). There are a lot of different spaces here: the patio where I sat, the outdoor garden, or the main dining room with its table seating, the bar, and a counter and stools along a wall. So if you plan ahead and make a reservation you can have your pick. My waitress arrived soon after I was seated, brought water in a pitcher and offered bread which I appreciated. Free bread is getting less common these days unfortunately, and it was good: soft warm Italian with an herbed crust, and a bottle of olive oil and jar of grated Parmesan on the table. My drinks for the evening were one of their specials, Grapefruit Gimlet. Which I suppose is a gimlet made with grapefruit juice instead of - or in addition to - lime? It had just a hint of sweetness, good flavor, icy cold, beautiful pink color, was served in an attractive glass, and strong. My appetizer was arancini: a generous portion of 3 with a nice crunchy outside, served over plenty of good red sauce and covered with coarsely grated cheese and green parsley. The interior could have been firmer - the risotto may have been a little overcooked - but overall quite good. The highlight was without a doubt the main entree: Pork Osso Buco. It must have been a special because I don't see it on the menu now. A spectacular presentation, and enormous! The pork shank standing vertically in the center of the plate atop the mashed sweet potatoes, surrounded by a huge portion of roasted brussels sprouts. The meat was heavily herb-crusted and tender. The brussels sprouts, carefully sliced into halves, were well-browned and had just a pleasant hint of bitterness, and the sweet potato mash was a more interesting choice than the common white potatoes. They don't skimp on portion sizes here, the meat or the vegetables. I ate plenty that evening and took home enough for a large lunch the next day. My waitress was flawless. She checked on me as needed, asking how things were, knew all the answers to my several questions about the food and drinks, had good recommendations, and made me feel welcome and at home. Dessert was the Spumoni Bomba: chocolate, pistachio, and strawberry gelato inside a hard chocolate shell, served with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Also excellent, all 3 gelatos having great flavor, the shell pleasingly crunchy and chocolatey. The whipped cream was an unnecessary addition and was slightly melty. A minor flaw for a very good dessert, and like the appetizer and entree, a size that was more than adequate. Desserts are not made in house but came from "a bakery in Boston" I was told. Even the espresso was perfect. Definitely a place to return to. There's a large menu including many of the Italian standards - pastas, meat, poultry, and seafood entrees, and pizzas. Plenty of things to choose from. They don't make the pasta in house but I'll forgive them for that.
