My best friend of nearly 40yrs and I really enjoy a well made sandwich. In our pursuit of great sandos, we've tried Katz Deli in NYC, Brent's in Northridge and even the sorely missed but never forgotten Miller's East Coast Deli in San Francisco. So when, tasked with finding a suitable place for our quarterly lunch meeting, I entered "Jewish deli" and "Downey" into Yelp, half expecting to find the lackluster lineup of national chains that PURPORT to make good sandwiches- Subway, Joysie Mike's, Jimmy John's and the usual suspects of sandwich sorriness! Imagine then, fellow Yelpers, when Uncle Henry's Deli appeared...as welcome a sight as my gorgeous bikini-clad wifey. Both Mick and I, who first bonded over our shared love of the national pastime, immediately likened Henry's with the MLB legend who shares my birthday- Henry Louis Aaron, aka Hamnerin' Hank and the REAL all-time home run leader, Barry Bonds and his oversized gourd, er, head be damned. In his 22yr career, Aaron belied his average size (5ft 11 tall, 185 lbs) and deployed his missile-fast wrists to smack 755 homers. All while playing in Jim Crow era Atlanta. Uncle Henry's Deli, similarly, defies expectations. Who would think of putting a Jewish-style delicatessen in Downey, famous for birthing the honey-voiced Carpenters and the self-styled "Mexican Beverly Hills?!" Mick ordered a super sized Original, which is turkey, roast beef + ham plus cheddar on white. He went with potato wedges which are sizable. Me? I chose one hot, one cold. A super sized Big B (Pastrami, Bacon + Swiss on toasted sourdough, hold the pickles) and an Egg Salad on enviably well made squaw bread, hold the tomatoes. Pro Tip- From a lifetime of ordering well made sandos in every major city in America, never put tomatoes on a cold sandwich unless you want the notoriously water-dense fruit to dampen your sandwich! The only mild drawback of my food order was the side of potato salad, which in my opinion would benefit from some black pepper and minced celery. The service at Henry's is expedient- You've barely helped yourself to one of their dark wood benches when they've called your order! The restroom was, yes, as cozy as the overall venue...but sufficiently clean + stocked. Watch out, tho- The hot water runs hotter than the devil's temperature! In closing, you can take Uncle Henry's to the bank. Yes, you'll part with upwards of a Jackson, mebbe even two. But you'll enjoy the treat, cuz the caliber of food is very bit as real as the hammer (aka Louisville Slugger) that Hamnering Hank used to bash all of his home runs with.

Small little sandwich shop in Downey. You order through a kiosk so there's not really a ton of Customer Service. Although they seem nice enough. It's in a strip mall with decent enough parking. The food itself is pretty fantastic. If you were in the mood for deli sandwiches, they have a plethora of options which I would highly recommend. Both their cold cuts and hot sandwiches are delicious. Although personally I would've added a few other condiment options like mustard. But overall a fantastic sandwich

This is our first time trying this place and the sandwiches are absolutely delicious. Italian Stallion: Stuffed with the meats and was delicious, except for the fact that they had a very tiny amount of onions and excessive amounts of oregano. Maybe if they increased the onion servings, added some mustard in here and decreased the oregano or even removed the oregano, this would be a five star sandwich. Philly cheesesteak sandwich: Absolutely delicious. Stuffed with cheese and bursting in flavors. I would definitely order this again.

Not many places like uncle Henrys anywhere. Been in business as long as I've been on this earth 66 years still has one of the family George running the show on this Saturday for my first time visit and he is an absolute wonderful host My brother lives in Downey. He's been there a few times boy oh boy the beer selection is unbelievable including paul aner one of the best hefes world on draft. You'll be hard-pressed to find more draft selections in any place in the entire state. Amazing pastrami sandwich, turkey, avocado, bacon sandwich my brother and I split them prosciutto mozzarella rolls forget about it!!! Thank you, George for your wonderful hospitality my brother and I will be back

While in the area my son & I wanted to try something different so off to yelp to search. This place came up & looked good. My son & I both agreed to give this spot a try. When you walk in it's like a small New York bodega meets a local bar. They have many tables where you can enjoy a beer & a sandwich. Many tv s to watch sports. It look us some time to look over the menu. I opted to get the oink & gobble & my son got the beef dip. Although it's a little pricy you pay for what you get. We also shared potato wedges. The sandwiches were AMAZING and we will definitely return. There was an employee clearing tables & he stopped to speak to us. He was very friendly. There are many beers on tap but I do not drink. Stop by & give this spot a try & support a local business.

A chill spot to relax, catch up with friends, drink a beer and watch some sports. Service is friendly, and most importantly their sandwiches are delicious. They also have a bar. I got a custom turkey sandwich with a side of potato wedges- absolutely delicious! I will definitely be coming back for more!

This place is equal parts deli and sports bar/craft beer bar. The space, located in a strip mall, itself is not very huge, but it seriously might have the largest craft beer selection to square foot ratio I've ever seen. Everyone here from the deli to the beer counter is friendly. And so are the patrons/regulars. Came here after work finally after having this place bookmarked for years. I came specifically for the Russian River flight that included Pliny for President. I also ordered the Big B - a large hot pastrami sandwich. The sandwich was very delicious and so was the beer. I wish this place was closer to me and would love to come back multiple times. Even struck up a conversation with other people here and they are very cool. My only warning is that this place is so great and it's small, this place could get packed very easily. Definitely a great spot for me to hit up when I'm driving through or even as a destination (since I live pretty far). Because it is in a strip mall, there was plenty of parking.

I stopped in here last week for the first time and I had a tuna melt in mind. I was thinking of toasty bread and tuna that would taste like Poseidon himself caught. Well I got the opposite of that lol. My sourdough bread wasn't toasted. It was actually pretty soggy and the lettuce was limp. For $15 I expected a solid sandwich and I was pretty disappointed. I'm guessing they have other options that might've been better but I don't think I'll be back.

Hidden gem! Girlfriend found this place on our way down to San Diego and it's amazing. Don't expect it from the outside, but the food is incredible. I got the hot pastrami and it honestly might be the best I've ever had. Service was also great. 10/10

Brew, subs, and sports. What more can a man ask for? Amazing food and friendly staff, great place to meet up friends to catch a game. I do wish it was bigger inside but the small cozy environment is nice as well.

Quality, quality, quality. All there is to it. Fair warning: the sandwiches are enormous, so you might want to order only one for sharing, or two if you can handle it! The pastrami sandwich is great in taste, quantity, and quality. Prices are fair. $12-15 for a sandwich, but like I said, they're huge. Not much else to say, I've tried plenty of sandwiches here and they were all good enough to reorder. We've tried the Rachel (on a deli roll instead of Rye), The Oinky something, and the Turkey Club. All were great! Perfect for lunch or dinner. Craving some now in fact. Glad to have some good food in Downey! read more

I couldn't recommend this deli more. My wife had the Avocado Turkey and I had the Italian / Sicilian sandwich absolutely delicious. Large proportions (and I got the wimpy size) absolutely delicious drinks. Fun environment with rad music. If you go there you won't be disappointed. read more

In this area I will say this is probably the best sandwich you will find. They have a variety of subs and you can build your own subs as well. I wanted to try their fries but they do not serve them at lunch time. Got a Sicilian and it was not bad. The bread is ok but the cold cuts were good. The cheese was a bit overpowering and vegetables a bit wet. Service here is good and they are friendly. Lots of tvs in the joint but limited seating. read more

Uncle Henry's Deli just celebrated their 60th year anniversary! They've made some minor improvements over the last couple of years... I must say, they are definitely my FAVORITE deli in at least a 10 mile radius. Quick Update: They now use ChowNow, an online ordering system - and it's fairly foolproof. Orders for pick-up are made fresh, fast, and with love. My "whimpie"-sized egg salad sandwich ($7.75) was huge and evenly proportioned. I had red onions added at no extra charge. Our girls shared a "whimpie"-sized reuben sandwich ($10.95). I stole a few bites and OMG... I almost switched sandwiches with them. Lol. Beers. Hot & cold sandwiches. Free parking. Catering also available. Need I say more? read more

I ordered a toasted tuna melt to go . It took almost 15 mins to get my order. Keep in mind I was the only order they had . The packaging was not good. It was on a foil paper. When I open it the cheese is stuck on foil and my sandwich was soggy . It was $15.00 for a soggy bread sandwich . Disappointed. read more

Hi, I recently visited this deli numerous times and just wanted to give a point scale review on my experience. Also I would like to share some notes as well. 1 being needs improvement, 10 being excellent Parking: 9.5 /10 plenty of parking, on the weekends you might have to park a little further. Outside appearance: 6.5/10 the buissines center could use a update but Henry's deli dresses the place up nicely. Inside appearance: 8.5/10 they are always updating and trying their best to fit people inside with the little space they have. Tables are usually kept clean as well Staff service: 7.5 /10. George and his dad are amazing owners and are always great people to talk to. The rest of the staff is hit or miss I've had great service and bad service. Food and restaurant experiance notes:by far the best deli in Downey if not the surrounding city's as well. The Italian stallion sub is my favorite as well as the patato wedge with bbq sauce. Never leave without trying a beer off "the wall" which has over 100 beers. Cheers!! read more

took my friend, Julian to this gem on Tuesday for lunch. like the name says, they are known for their sandwiches. Julian had the Ruben sandwich which consist of corned beef, I think and I had Rachel which has pastrami. you can make your sandwich large, but even the normal size will fill you up.. this deli, also has beers. Sunday and Mondays are happy hour with $5 pour beers. and wed- Fri happy hours are 3p-6pm. this is my third time coming to this place, and their sandwich never disappoints. after we had our sandwiches we were so full that we wanted to just go home and nap.. besides sandwiches you can also get something else. the staffs are very friendly and laid back. good place to just sit down have a good sandwich and some brewskis.. they also have tv so you can relax even more. read more

My background as a Chef always has me giving off compliments when food is done right. Hats off to Uncle Henry's Deli with the 9" French Roll Sicilian Sandwich. As a Chef, I'd say my specialty is sandwiches and I'm a sandwich Snob to the grave. I'm coining "Food Snob"right here, if anyone wants to quote me. For those of you that relish in the idea that you're a foodie, then trying these sandwiches might be up your alley. The menu was filled with just the right amount of sandwiches both hot and cold. I absolutely love this spot and not just because I'm a huge sandwich lover! My first visit here was to watch a UFC PPV , yes you read that correctly, that have sandwiches and fights but wait there is MORE, they have by far the best craft beer selection around! Uncle Henry is legit! You can catch all sports here, including PPV fights, which I just think makes this spot an absolute gem! The food is so fresh and delicious and they have some great options. Service here is excellent as well, super friendly and talkative. It's not the biggest place but it works and you can't have a bad spot with all the tvs ! Ambiance is perfectly loud, fun and smells of deliciousness! Love the picnic style tables and to go beer section! I had a great time and it certainly won't be the last time ! We come here so often, not for the tiny space, sports bar setting or for it being crowded but the sandwiches are always so good, satisfying and generously portioned, additionally if you are a CRAFT BEER person, MAKE THIS YOUR SPOT! They also serve hard cider on tap. Sandwiches are made in front of you cold and hot with a full deli freezer of sides, meats and cheeses! The ambience of this place is unmatched. Looks live a dive bar- a whole bunch of beers on tap, and some of the tastiest sandwiched in town. I've had the hot corn beef swiss and also the Reuben. The corned beef swiss is amazing and packs so much flavor but the Reuben is probably the best I've had anywhere. Great atmosphere, friendly service, overall a complete win. read more

I ordered a ham and cheese on white bread. The bread was fresh enough. Nothing to write home about. It's white bread. The ham was of poor quality. It was more like a thinly sliced bologna. Prices are borderline extortionate. I won't be returning. read more

We have a 106 selection of top notch craft beers on draft. Check out our draft selection at taphunter.com We also have wine, a chardonnay and Pinot Noir on draft as well as a selection of craft ciders and meads. We have a 300+ bottle selection for to go only. Our online store will be hp in the summer. Plus: Pint Nights (most Tuesdays) Tap Take Overs (most Thursdays) Beer Events Beer Pairing Dinners (pre-sale tickets) All of our sandwiches are amazing, it really depends what YOU like. Our sizes do NOT increase in length (like 6in and 12in), rather we put more meat and go up, since we use sliced bread. We are KID- friendly. this place is the best!!!!!!!!!! its amazingly tasty. the prices are unbeatable. each sandwich is hooked up to perfection. the enviorment there is incredible. so much old budwieser mugs and priceless beer artifacts there. it was a real chill place to be. back to the most amazing sandwiches. they have this one called the bomer!!!! its has to be like 3 pounds!!! has turkey roast beef and ham with all the condiments on it of course. its on four slices of bread. you can pick from french roll, sour dough, white, rye, or squaw bread. now for the beer!! yeah they sell beer too, simply amazing!!! they have the most selection of beer. from your common bud light to more exotic beer like fat tire or hanger 24. the two beers they got on tap is bud light and pacifico. they have free wi fyi and they always have netflix playing its too dope there. this is my first review ever not into the whole review style but i just had to on this place!!!!!!! fuck subway with there over priced food witch isnt hooked up at all. plus they dont serve beer. you got to have a beer with your sandwitch right people? never going back to subway again this is my new sandwitch spot. read more

absolutely the best sandwiches anywhere... eat here once and you will never go to Subway or Quiznos again... oh, be sure to bring a big appetite... they don't know the meaning of small... my favorite is the Italian Stallion, but you can't go wrong with anything there... for something different, try a Special Mix where the potato salad is right in the sandwich along with whatever meat, etc. you want on it... originally only sold deli meat when Henry opened the doors in 1969 as Henry's Meats and started making the Special Mix sandwich for special customers a year or two later... despite not letting the public know they made sandwiches, the Special Mix became locally famous... in the late 70's Henry passed the business on to his nephew George who turned it into what it is today and still runs it along with his son and daughter... read more

Stopped into Uncle Henry's Deli 5 years ago and WOW! What a GREAT sandwhich shop...no comparison to Subway or Quiznos. The amount of meat they put on their regular sandwhich is PLENTY without asking for double. I really love the turkey and avocado on rye. The bread there is amazing too. Whenever we drive thru Downey we also stop in for a great meal. It's family owned and the family is really cool. Always feel welcome and well accomidate. The beers on tap choices here are literally endless. You can go every day and get three different beers every time and by the time you tried them all(about 100) they'd actually have switched a few out. Then there's the bottles of beer(probably 300) that are available for carry out only. And mother of god the sandwiches. Insane. My personal favorite is the beef dip. It's amazing. read more
