Stopped by with my mom for dinner. The sushi and sashimi were both fine--fresh fish, not too much rice, but not really better than our regular sushi spot at home. The appetizers, on the other hand, were AMAZING. They were all very creative and interesting and, of course, delicious. My mom had the ceviche tacos and loved them. I had the treasure island, which was several types of chopped up sashimi mixed with spicy mayo and avocado around it with ponzu sauce on top of it all. It was crazy good, and huge! I almost couldn't finish my entree because of the size of the appetizer. Overall, the sushi itself is just good, but the appetizers are definitely worth every penny. read more

Definitely over the years, surprisingly consistent. This might be my favorite sushi spot within the Essex/morris counties. I lived in the city for 7 years and traveled to the pacific rim over the last 3 decades. Umi is the only place I may go to if I'm in jersey. I like sushi lounge, but it's not the same. Family came here to try out and we were all very happy with the food and services. I had the sashimi dinner with 16 pieces of sashimi and I enjoyed my meal. It was presented nicely and the sashimi were fresh. The soup and salad that came with dinner was very tasty. I like the amount of dressing on my salad, but my wife preferred a little lighter. My wife had their Bento Box E - Vegetables box and she liked all the vegetable tempuras and sushi. My daughter had their angel sushi and she enjoyed the sushi with the fresh slice mangoes on top. This place is bookmark for future trip to NJ. They were very attentive to us. The ladies kept asking how things were or picking up dirty dishes. read more

This order is for take out. We are currently still waiting for our food which has now taken 1 hour to make. Ironically, sushi is raw so it's confusing what the wait time is for. We were told it would be 15-30 minutes for take out. We arrived promptly at the 30 minute mark. I walked in and they had not even started our order. I, self admittedly, angrily asked "what do you suggest we do?" And the person told me to sit for another 20 minutes or I could cancel it. I said "we will be back" and walked out. My husband and I waited in the car for 20 minutes. My husband just walked in and the man claimed that when I walked out, they did not start making the order so it will be ANOTHER 20 minutes. The unprofessional nature is astounding. It leads me to the following questions: 1. If they were confused about if we wanted the order canceled, why didn't they call to follow up? 2. If they claim that they thought the order was to be canceled, why didn't they credit the order? It is now getting late and we have no food. The staff is unprofessional and quite frankly, the sushi isn't above a B-. I would cancel the order if our entire family was not waiting for it. read more

Been here a couple times and I have to say, pleasantly surprised! The locale is in a nice area of town, surrounded by a few wine bars and a Starbucks. The actual decor is tough to critique as it looks as though they are still undergoing some cosmetic reservations. Apparently it used to be another sushi restaurant but was purchased by the new owner a few months ago. Luckily the food made up for it! The thing about this place is that they have some curiously unique offerings that separate it from the droves of local corner sushi spots. Through two visits, I tried both my usual go tos and some new ones, some out of sheer curiousity. We started with some garlic amber jack, which had thin cuts of fish covered in fried garlic and fresh greens, both minced to ridiculously small pieces. It was served swimming in a nice savory sauce, and had a great mix of taste and texture. The aroma of garlic being prepared was lovely, and was a great start to our meal (disclaimer: I am a huge fan of garlic!) The hamachi crunch special was my favorite dish of the night. It had yellowtail thinly sliced with a razor thin cerrano pepper over a sauce reminiscent of the amber jack dish. On top of it all were some small greens and crushed potato chips...what? Chips?? Yeah, but it worked in a crazy delicate, crunchy, awesome way! The monkfish liver was another dish that piqued my curiousity, and I had to try. It came in the form of a pate over tomato and cucumber, stacked with crabmeat and greens. Well executed and decadent...was a nice rich bite, or two, rather. We tried a few pieces of the Chef's Taste Sushi, and the most memorable ones were the king salmon and big eye tuna. The salmon comes with a creamy onion and paper thin tomato on top...I wish they had this as an app without rice (and five more pieces!). The bigeye tuna was nice too, with a garlic chip giving a cruncy texture without adding tempura flakes. We also had a spicy lava roll (spicy crab, mango, avocado) which was creamy and tart, and a wave crest roll, which was pretty good but not my fave. All in all, fish quality was good, very creative dishes,and a good night all in all. A little pricier than the 50% off sushi places that I frequent almost daily, but well worth it. Five stars for the food and service, minus a star only because of the decor. If youre sick of the same old tuna roll combo, worth a shot to try some new and delicious food. read more

I was a regular when it was Samurai. A big piece of the draw there was the frendly hostess who we actually wound up becoming friendly with. It must have been quite some time since we stepped inside because I had no idea it was changing! When I first arrived I had to double check the outside sign to make sure I wasnt in the wrong place. Upon first appeareance Umi feels very chic and grown up. The layout is not very different but it seems they've made it more "airy" and accented it with an industrial feel ceilign and blue lighting from under the bar. I'ts still a BYOB which is always great and they are always ready to refill when you are. The menu has changed and seems to be a bit more pricey. The sushi was very tasty and fresh but I did notice the cuts of fish seem to be smaller or thinner cut. The staff was VERY friendly and not too intrusive. They did come to check on us many times but it wasnt over board. I did love that we were able to really sit and talk and finish our bottle of wine without being rushed out. I actually wound up singing a 98 degrees song on the radio with one of the sushi chefs ( thank goodness no other patrons were around ) while they cleaned up. I may find myself back here again to try some of their specials but not sure if I'd consider it my go to spot for Sushi. read more

Alright, let me start off with this. I came once, and won't come again. Their food was below decent and the sushi was hot, not COLD. I waited over 30 minutes for RAW FISH! I would rather go to my local 7/11 and get sushi! The portions were so tiny! They add a humungous amount of tempura flakes and completely cancels out what you ACTUALLY ordered. The only decent thing was their staff, their staff were actually pretty nice. Overall not the best decision to go to this restaurant. Went here for take out once because I was in town and ended up going back for my birthday dinner that same week. This spot is excellent ! Milburn is currently expanding the size of their side walks for people to eat outside of the restaurants. This place already has a nice outside seating area though! It's a BYOB. The service is always excellent. Their brown rice sushi is great but it is $1 more per roll but definitely worth it. They do not charge for spicy mayo though! Disappointing quality of food. Got the spicy yellowtail and scallop rolls. Completely tasteless. And why would anyone mix tempura flakes inside spicy rolls? All you taste is tempura. As much as I want to like this place the food is just not up to par. I'm not sure how to reply to the owner but I would suggest a much more high end approach to sushi considering they're in one of the most exclusive towns in New Jersey. Really - get the tempura out of the sushi rolls, focus on more flavor, and pay for higher quality of fish. Visit Sushi Yasuda, ushiwakamuru, or Yama and NYC. Taste their food and then taste yours. It's not even close. Charge more for better quality. People will pay more for it. read more

Had an order delivered- Ordered "Salmon Lover" which was supposed to be 10 pieces salmon sashimi and a spicy salmon roll- received 3 pieces of salmon sashimi and maybe 10 pieces of thinly slice salmon over rice. Ventured over to Umi in the center of Millburn on lunch from work. The center of Millburn is a nice little shopping area, has a wide array of restaurants and such, parking as relatively easy and toss in a few quarters and you're on your way. Walked in to Umi to an inviting staff and very modern but simple decor. We were seated immediately and had a very very attentive, conversational, and persistent waitress. It's lunch, it's expected because generally people don't have a lot of time. My lunchmate had the Yellowtail Serrano App which was sliced very thin, topped with a pepper, and a sauce. Delicious. She ordered the 2 roll combo which the waitress suggested as more cost effective vs. ordering them separate. Very nice of her. I ordered the 3 roll combo and had some of my regulars- Spicy tuna, Spicy Salmon, and Eel Avocado. The rolls weren't too small and weren't over packed with rice like some places do when it's discounted. I also ordered the Lion King. Soft Shell Crab, Lobster Salad, and Avocado- topped with Spicy Tuna and Tobiko. Delicious each bite. Constantly had my green tea glass filled on this cold day and overall enjoyed my experience. Enjoyed the nice list of Special Rolls they had and also wanted to dive into some of the creative appetizers they had listed but other than that- it's kind of hard for a sushi place to set itself apart. After experiencing the many sushi options in Millburn/Maplewood/Livingston, I've decided that Umi, while a bit pricier, is my go to place. Firstoff, when you get the sashimi dinners, as I do, you actually get special fishes like king salmon, fatty tuna, ebi, octopus, and a really good sized amount of fishie eggs. (Note: this is just a sampling..every time I go it is different. And they've always told me what was on the plate as they set it down... As opposed to leaving me to guess) They have awesome wasabi shumai. They have a lot of fusion dishes, and the appetizers I've tried have been delicious. I will say that I don't think it's the best acoustics, it does get loud. I suggest making reservations (or just show up) for either before or after the dinner rush. The staff are all pleasant, they are both attentive and not rushing you. And they answer any questions. And I often have a lot of them. :) Seriously, I'd sooner pay a few more dollars for incredibly fresh tasting, delicious fish than go to another place, sushi/sashimi is a treat to be savored. read more

The best Sushi place I have ever ate at ! There were five in our party, three ordered the Sashimi Deluxe, one ordered Orange Dragon and one ordered the Samurai Dinner box A . The Sushi was fresh and the pieces of Tuna and Salmon were delicious. So good we ordered an extra Sashimi Deluxe!!! The Taco Ceviche was great and unique as a starter dish and we finished our meal with green tea Mochi ice cream. Service was very good. This restaurant truly deserves five stars. read more

Standard sushi joint, with some contemporary accents, like the rotating ceiling fan fans (traditional ceiling fans with small fans mounted on the ends too). Staff was friendly. Waitress got my order slightly wrong but it was OK (yellowtail instead of spicy). The eel avocado roll was very good. The yellowtail handroll was a bit on the small side and rolled in a tube rather than a cone, but tasty enough, and not too many scallions (I hate onions). They also deliver, which is good. We went here because our usual places were closed and this place had 4 stars. First, we were seated and the waitress did not come take our order or ask what we wanted do drink for like 10 min. They weren't busy at all we were pretty much the only people in there. We ordered 2 rolls each and got water. Then, the water tasted like straight bleach. I thought I was drinking pool water. It was so revolting I almost vomited. I told the waitress and she came over and smelled our waters and said she didn't smell anything and said "Well no one's ever complained about it before" so she took them away about brought us tea because "There's nothing I can do about the water". I have ordered from Umi Sushi in the past and it has been outstanding. Tonight my family and I were planning on ordering in, which we do all the time. They said it was going to take 40-50 minutes. Over an hour later the food was still not here. We called the restaurant and they claimed they already dropped it off. We went to check outside and did not see the food outside. We texted some neighbors asking if they maybe delivered it to the wrong place. One of my neighbors said they had seen sushi all over the street in front of the house. We assume that they drooped the sushi which was fine because everyone makes mistakes. We now realized that the deliverer lied because they did not want to admit that they dropped the food. Disappointing quality of food. The rolls were so small. The fish was warm and not cold. I've had better sushi from Shoprite and Whole Foods take out. The miso soup was just warm and very salty. The only good thing was the little salad with ginger dressing. It was my first and last time going here. I would think since it's in Millburn you'd get better food. I was a regular customer there -ordering take out or delivery frequently. But when you have a customer service issue - watch out and keep your expectations low. I ordered a maki roll dinner and ordered roll without avocado - and it arrived with avocado. So I called and they said they would bring a replacement right out. In the meanwhile - one person doesn't have their dinner but that's ok. 45 minutes later, they arrive and the roll STILL had avocado on it. I asked for a refund for the dinner - because they brought us the wrong food 2x - and they said only for the wrong roll. Forget the fact that we waited over 1.5 hours to have our food delivered incorrectly and the fact that we have been good customers - they didn't want to refund the meal which was left incomplete. I called to discuss this with them and left my number - they never called back. So beware if you have allergy issues or like customer service. Go elsewhere. read more

Sad to say, that this restaurant that I used to frequent on a regular basis has lost it's luster. At least for us. A consistent trend in a downward spiral that we have noticed over the last year. The rolls are not as fresh tasting, the contents are mushy and the rice is gooey. The appetizers that I used to love, i.e., calamari, shrimp shumai and gyoza are just not appetizing. My husband says that he still finds the sashimi deluxe to be of very good quality but I must say that the cooked foods and salads are just not there. Maybe Japanese style food doesn't travel well in general i.e., from Milburn to the next town over in Maplewood, but it will be a long time, if ever, that we return here. read more

LOVED Umi. They have really flashed this place up since it was Samurai. While that isn't necessarily all that important to me I understand it is to some. What I really enjoyed was they offer a "choose your own" maki combo for dinner -- which is pretty rare. I think for $15 you get 3 rolls, soup and salad. The miso was one of thest best I have ever had and the rolls, while not necessarily anything special, were heavy on the fish and low on the rice. Very filing and delicious. The only thing that put a damper on the evening was that this is a small place and the noise level can get high pretty quickly. One of the chefs at the sushi bar started doing shots with some of the patrons, and around the same time the group next to us was very loud. Our nice quiet dinner quickly turned into a sushi frat party. Not necessarily the restaurant's fault entirely -- but just be aware that it can get noisy pretty quickly at Umi. read more

Well that's a shame third or fourth time back and it has really went down hill over time. Cut down on the fish in the rolls, the texture of the tartar was horrible ( should have known better than to have ordered it) and the waiter was overbearing and tried to up sell the fresh scallops (which I have seen served before and they are not fresh). The death blow was the up charge for brown rice on my three rolls... $1 per roll!! Totally overcharged and unacceptable yet the waiter had no excuse.
