    Spider roll and Incredible roll
    Natty C.

Pretty standard sushi spot. It's very casual inside. I came on a Sunday afternoon and we were the only ones there. (FYI they open at 1 PM on Sunday) I guess most people order delivery or to go. I ordered two specialty rolls, the Incredible roll and Spider roll. They were pretty good. I have no complaints. Prices were standard. I would probably just order to go next time.

Ordered delivery & had a piece of plastic in my tempura. Called to notify the restaurant immediately (around 4:30 so should be before dinner rush) & no answer.

Nope...just...nope. I had a taste for sushi last Friday so I called this spot. I've eaten their food one time before with zero issues so I figured "why not?" I was in CVS when I had this bright idea to call and order ahead of time. I called and someone picked up. I asked about their specials as I know I had gotten 3 sushi rolls before for a good price. The guy who answered was "short" with me- abrupt to say the least. I could hear in his voice he was "busy" as I inquired about his menu specials. He told me that 3 rolls would be 20-something dollars. I felt that was pricey but told him to please place my order. That's when I realized my phone automatically picked up my car's bluetooth and the guy probably couldn't hear me at some point. I realized he hung up on me for that reason. :( I called back and got the same "irritated" unfriendly guy. I asked him if he received my order and apologized that we were cut off. Unfortunately my car's bluetooth picked up again and he hung up on me very quickly...again. Okay question...as a business employee if a consumer calls - not once but twice to try and place an order and you sense there's something going on during the call that allowed the call to disconnect, wouldn't it be common sense protocol to call back your customer? Well dude didn't call me back and I felt like I'd had enough of his rudeness so I didn't call him back. Instead I called "Go Sushi" in Scotch Plains to place my sushi order. Scotch Plains is quite a bit further out then this place which is up the street from my house but...I'll take the trip to have better service AND better sushi on any given day. Oh and the price is much better also! I will not be coming back here nor will I be placing any phone calls.

I absolutely love sushi rolls with tuna and this place did not disappoint! I ordered my staple spicy tuna roll that I get from every sushi place as well as their special Christmas roll. The rolls were so good that I felt inspired enough to pause eating them to write this review! I'm sad that I did not discover this place sooner as today is my last day at my job up in Kenilworth. Although maybe I can justify a few trips on occasion to swing by again!

I'll be honest when walked in the place didn't smell good. I can't put my finger on it but it smelled foul. After a little bit I didn't smell it. Almost like burnt hair... There was only 1 person working when I went around lunch time and to my surprise it was really packed! I'm glad I stayed despite the smell because the sushi was amazing!!

    End piece of the asparagus

I just ordered 2 rolls and a clear soup from here for delivery and that was just awful! It was my first time trying this place and it was quite disappointing. The sushi was not fresh and was covered by layers and layers of mayo. One of the pieces had the end piece of an asparagus that should have been thrown out not in a roll. They also gave the smallest amount of wasabi and the clear soup tasted old. I had to throw both rolls out

Spicy shrimp roll and the incredible roll.

Called in my order on a sunny Friday afternoon and 15 minutes later I'm eating a spicy shrimp roll in the sun. Easy pickup from the front door. (Parking tip - pull in and park in the strip - then walk down. There's no exit by their end). Also had good hamachi sashimi. Tasty and fresh.

Sushi dinner combo with tuna roll
    Lea M.

I've ordered delivery from Sakae Sushi many times. They have a nice menu with many different options. I usually order a sushi dinner combo and a bento box. The chicken teriyaki was a little dry and didn't taste super fresh. The sushi dinner was good but the tuna quality in the tuna roll wasn't the best. The delivery is quick and the sushi is decent. Not spectacular but usually a safe choice for delivery.

Makes sense, as the restaurant is small and it gets crowded especially on weekends. The restaurant is family run and very friendly. We tried a few rolls and everything was nice and tasty. While it's not quite on the level of New York City's omakase spots, it's solid for New Jersey and worth a visit if you're in the area. Standout bites for me were the Otoro and Chu Toro- both beautifully fatty and flavorful - as well as the Hamachi with shishito and the scallop topped with crispy garlic. Other highlights included the Madai (seabream), barracuda, striped jack, and a satisfying bone marrow served with toast. I also tried Kumamoto oysters for the first time in years, and they were a lovely surprise-cleaned properly, topped with a light sauce, and incredibly fresh. The Hokkaido uni was creamy, though slightly more briny and bitter than I personally prefer. Mr. Bin himself mentioned that uni flavor can vary depending on the season. Throughout the meal, Mr. Bin was present and helpful, guiding us toward which fish to try. The fish is delivered fresh twice a week, and the quality really does show. That said, it's still missing that little extra something that sets top-tier omakase apart- the purposeful dot of yuzu sauce, the hidden dab of wasabi under the fish, or a crisp garnish that adds dimension and surprise. Some sushi have this, some don't. The technique is good, the fish is fresh, and the experience was enjoyable- I'd return- but it's a notch below the more elevated experiences you can find in the city. Hence 4 stars. Solid though, and friendly. Nice ambiance inside too, Saturday dinner time it filled up quickly so I recommend a reservation.

We had to wait ~15 minutes for a table to open up before we were able to be seated despite having a reservation. There was a large (and disruptive) party next to us and it seemed like the place was understaffed as our server wasn't able to attend to us much and he seemed frazzled. For appetizers, we had the vegetable gyozas and fried wontons. Both were pretty unimpressive and I wouldn't order them again. I ordered the tempura udon for my entrée which came with a bowl of miso soup which was pretty good. One of my friends got the D.E. warrior roll which was quite pricey (~$30) and was chewy since all the meat was cooked. My udon was decent and came with two shrimp tempuras and two broccoli tempura as well. However, I wasn't a fan of the spinach that came inside the soup. Overall, we had a satisfactory time at Akai but we don't think we would return.

We had the Braised Pork Belly Donbari, Truffle Ramen, & Katsu (Chicken) Cutlet w/Hibachi fried rice add on (not pictured). Overall, everything was just Meh. Nothing was bad, but nothing was particularly good either. The Truffle Ramen had an unpleasant smell, the Katsu was decent, the Hibachi Fried Rice was more like brown rice tather than actual fried rice. The braised pork belly donburi was flavorless.
