I've been a returning customer and even left a very positive review several months ago, but my most recent visit on October 31st was extremely disappointing. We came to celebrate my daughter's birthday (her birthday is October 24th), and I honestly wish I had chosen somewhere else this time. My daughter loves sushi and this used to be her favorite restaurant, but this visit really let us down. The sushi was not well-cooked, the shrimp fried rice was overly greasy, and the deep-fried California roll just didn't taste good at all. I spent around $60, and it felt like a complete waste of money. On top of that, the service was unprofessional. While we were still seated and chatting, the staff started cleaning up around us, which made us feel rushed and uncomfortable. Cleaning should take place after guests have left the table, not while they're still seated. I'm very disappointed because I've truly enjoyed this place in the past, but this visit was far from the same experience. The location itself is fairly small like most plaza sushi restaurants but whenever we do eat here, the service is always great. Almost always we take the sushi for takeout. The food travels very well. They ventilate the boxes for the fried rolls so they maintain its crispiness. Then rolls are filling and worth the value! A majority of their rolls are a variation of the California roll. Their California roll is excellent quality so no matter how you order it, you'll be happy with the result. Let me tell you that the service here is beyond exceptional. While the space is small, it's also tidy and welcoming. They seem to be a local business and has a lot of traffic during weekdays, not just weekends alone. The food has been consistently good, and this is from someone who has come here for 2 Basic Rolls deal for the Nth time already. My wife and I have been here many times before, brought friends and family members that have visited us from out of town due to those previous visits, but we went about 2 weeks ago on a random regular weekday and it was a little busy, but were sat immediately(right by the door and I had my 2 month old with us) and ordered drinks. We got waters fairly quickly, but went no where after that. Saw multiple tables walk in after us, including a couple that sat right next to us that some of the staff clearly knew and got served drinks before us and we had to remind a server of our drinks we ordered. We then ordered some appetizers immediately once we got the drinks and after that point we saw a table that came in long after us get full meals and the table next to us get multiple dishes brought to them with no site of our apps. We then finally ordered 4 different rolls, and still no appetizers while we watched that previous table pay and leave, not a piece of food on our table yet. The table next to us recieved more food and still nothing on our table after almost 40+ mins of sitting there. We finally asked a server if our food was on the way and the blank look of OMG said enough. We asked if anything had even been ordered to the kitchen and he replied "No". The lack of attention to the guests is the biggest factor for ppl to return, way more then just food and this service has gone down the drain completely. We have decided we will not return, which is sad because we do live close and have enjoyed in the past, but the complete disaster as of late was to much. read more

I would advice if you order ramen when you dine in , it would take a while till you receive it or chances are that they forgot it. I wouldn't came back to just eat ramen. Grabbed some Umi through a delivery app during the rainstorm last week because I had a craving for some delicious ramen. I had to give it 3 stars specifically because the flavors fell a bit flat. Especially in comparison to others in Dallas. The Las Vegas sushi roll however was delicious! We also ordered the karaage and one other roll I can't remember the name of. Why 3 stars? The pricing is a tad wild in my opinion. We spent over $100 for 2 sushi rolls, 3 different kinds of ramen, and 1 karaage app. It just didn't make sense for a quick lunch that didn't give me exactly what I was craving. This is my go-to sushi spot whenever I am near Firewheel mall. My most recent visit was a bit disappointing compared to previous visits. The service was okay and our server was not very tentative. They forgot to give us menus and the marker to mark what you want to order, so we had to get up to get those ourselves. They also didn't come to refill our waters and we had to get their attention numerous times. They seemed a bit annoyed whenever we called them to the table. UMI DOES NOT SERVE ALCOHOL OF ANY SORT. We don't fault Umi Sushi for not serving alcohol; we fault them for keeping it almost-secret. The fact is nowhere to be found on their minimalist web site, and only one too-easy-to-miss sign on a side window of their storefront advertises the fact ... in pseudo-Japanese characters which are easy to miss by the people who already drove there thinking they'd have a drink with dinner. Over the last three decades or so, my wife and I have eaten at literally hundreds of sushi joints -- and Umi is absolutely the first and only one of those we have visited which does not serve sake. (Sake is a Japanese rice wine which is THE essential accompaniment to sushi, as far as we are concerned.) "But we have a sign!" they say. Yeah, the sign. Here's a picture of it, which was our first view of it, from our table INSIDE the restaurant. But by the time we saw it, we had already driven to the restaurant, entered, been greeted, seated, and ordered hot sake -- and then been told by our server that they don't serve alcohol. For the rest: Ambiance: nice, clean Prices: average, reasonable Service: young man scared of his shadow, not sure what to do, or what to say, or when to say it. After taking our order to the kitchen he came back and asked my wife if she still wanted hers. (What the ...???) If he has been on the job more than 2 weeks, then there's a problem somewhere. But he still got a 20% tip, because hey, I'm warm and fuzzy, dangit. Food: miso soup broth was very thin, no tofu cubes, one square of nori per bowl, and some microscopic remnants of chopped green onion floating around (perhaps tell the server to STIR the pot before ladling?); fish overall (sashimi & nigiri) gets a B for fresh salmon and warm eel nigiri. The eel roll could have used a lot less crab salad and more eel, and could have included some eel sauce drizzled over it. Salmon roe and escolar were okay, and the mackerel, which Americans don't order as much (and therefore sits in the fridge a lot), was better than I expected. If you don't care about alcohol, Umi Sushi might be worth a try, but we won't be back. Once again, no fault on Umi Sushi for not serving alcohol, that is an absolutely acceptable thing to do. But keeping it almost-completely secret until a patron has been greeted, seated, and then denied the first thing he asks for, well, that is pretty annoying. How can Umi fix that? Put NO ALCOHOL SERVED, BYOB on your web site, big and prominent enough to where people will see it even by accident. Put it everywhere you can think of on the internet -- Yelp, Tripadvisor, Google -- and a dozen other places, so people won't drive all the way to your place BEFORE learning you're dry. And move that sign from the sidelight of your storefront the top center of your door, right above your logo, so people can't miss it like we did. Or, get a liquor license, even if just for beer and wine. You'll attract more customers, and repel fewer. (What a concept!) read more

I've been here 3 times now before writing this review, but I'll only write about my recent visit, although my review would be the same all 3 times. Roll Over Roll: 5/5, its 5 large pieces that is served with tuna on top along side a sesame dipping sauce. Seriously so good and filling. Donkatsu Bowl: 5/5. My favorite thing about it is the fried egg that it comes with. Pork fried so well with that yummy dipping sauce. I went 2x in the same week my first time going I loved my sushi roll. I wish I had taken a photo but unfortunately that's how good it was I didn't save the photo! My 2nd visit was not so great. I ordered a ramen that pretty much was on par with the Maruchan brand you get from Walmart. I usually expect more from a restaurant ramen. We also ordered the sashimi boat and half of the fish was good while the other half wasn't so fresh. I'd like to add the food presentation is very nice, I was disappointed overall but I'm hoping to return solely for their rolls and that's it.
