Saw this on yelp and decided to check it out, I love onigiris very much probably like one of my top foods on my list. My family and I were staying in Portland for a couple of days and wanted to try this place out and I have to say this was a bit disappointing in our opinion. We ordered the furikake tuna and spicy pork onigiris and felt like overall the lack of the amount of protein was not quite there. These rice balls were pretty small and the amount of tuna and spicy pork we received was not there at all. In terms of flavor, the tuna felt like it was canned tuna and didn't taste fresh at all. The spicy pork was okay nothing too special and lacked a bit of flavor. The only thing that we found pretty good was the pickled cucumbers that was paired with the onigiris. Small place (it's kinda looks like a food stand, not a walk in restaurant) but There's a small sitting area (mayeb two tables) with a covering, I love how they hand so many different onigiri to choose from , and some work unique flavors. Their smoothies are awesome, some of the best I've had in Oregon and this is the only location I've seen them. The woman working the front is always in a good mood and impressively efficient at what she does (as someone who also works in food service I'm impressed). It does have less of a sit down restaurant vibe but I like the outdoor spot it's covered and very peaceful in Oregon rain, plus there's other shops around like Sundance or Quiktrip if you wanted it extra chips, drinks or anything. read more

I tried this place for the first time last night with my boyfriend, on a rainy night! Thankfully it has coverage and a few tables and benches for seating. I really enjoy onigiri and so we just ordered 2 onigiri to try: bbq pork and kimchi bacon. It was only $7 for both, so it wasn't bad at all. I will say, the concept of grilling the onigiri is definitely new for me as I am used to eating riceballs in that form, so this was out of the ordinary. Luckily my boyfriend asked for forks when we got our food, because if we didn't have those they definitely would've fallen apart had I eaten it with my hands like usual. The actual onigiri was good though, top was toasty due to the grilling and it was tasty. The bbq pork filling was not my 100% favorite but it was still good. Next time I'd probably do the tuna furikake. The kimchi bacon was alright, but I am not the biggest fan of kimchi! When I first started buying meals here in 2019, I loved, loved it. The food was well prepared, presented and delicious. Over the last 3 to 4 years, the quality of the food has really deteriorated. The food flavor is not the same. I keep trying it again every once in a while hoping for improvement but I am consistently disappointed. I recently ordered the brussel sprouts which were overcooked, greasy and salty beyond belief. And to top it off, there was a a pebble-like thing in it that broke part of a tooth. I almost never write reviews, and I hate having to say such negative things about a restaurant of which I have such fond memories. I'm sorry Ume. What happened to you? They opened a new Ume location across from the hospital. I've been going to the food cart on 24th for a while, and I tried the skewer house on Pearl as well. Consistently good, fresh food at a reasonable price. Plates come with a big salad and a homemade sesame dressing. The new location has another vegetarian option: miso butter tofu. It's super delicious. A great spot for lunch. Note that seating in this location is limited to a few tables, so better for take-out when busy. read more

I was here a couple weeks ago with my husband. We stumbled on it just by walking around. It's on the corner in this tiny strip mall with a convenience store. I've probably driven by it a hundred times and never noticed it. We stopped in for a bite to eat, really thankful they were open since the Coronavirus has shut half the town down. It's always a nice sight to see a business still open and functioning. I ordered a small plate of teriyaki chicken, and my husband ordered garlic pork, but the bigger size with the salad. My plate was chicken, rice, and pickles. My husband's had a salad, corn, beets, eggs, and possibly a few other veggies. My husband doesn't eat hard boiled eggs or beets. So he passed those off to me and ate the rest. We both thoroughly enjoyed our food. The small plate, I think it was labeled the student special, and not on the normal menu, was a perfect size for me. What stood out to me was how fresh everything was. I may also have a small obsession with their house-made pickles too. They were soooo good. A nice light relief from the chicken and rice. They aren't serving any drinks right now, instead they directed us to the market next door. Which has a nice selection and friendly employees. Plus a great spot to get out of the sun while waiting on my food. We found a picnic table in that parking lot to sit and eat in the shade. It was a relaxing place to enjoy our meal. Almost made me forget it was in a parking lot. Would I eat here again? Yes! I'm really glad I found this place and gave it a try. It is totally worth a return visit. I wish there was a location closer because this isn't an area of Eugene I go to often. But this restaurant is an excellent reason to visit that part of Eugene more often. Salads were great. Onigiri were great. Sauces and rice were good. The only downside was the chicken teriyaki. Not only did it not taste like teriyaki, it didn't taste like good chicken. Several of my group tried it and thought it was gross. But everything else we got was bangarang. An additional note: I am a huge snob when it comes to salmon. Usually if it's not sockeye, coho, or chinook I won't touch it. Now, I don't expect most places (including this one) to use the highest quality salmon--that stuff is expensive. I don't usually order it unless I'm going to a nice sit down restaurant, but I was intrigued and decided to order the miso salmon plate. One of our most utilized spots for a great healthy weeknight takeout meal. The miso butter salmon plate is the way to go and one of their most consistently good menu items. My partner loves their chicken teriyaki and always gets extra teriyaki sauce on the side. The salad that comes with the plates is excellent and always features an egg and sliced almonds with a very satisfying tahini dressing. They are always friendly to our dog and sometimes give him a half boiled egg as a treat! Their onigiri are decent and are fried in butter and sprinkled with a seasoning mix at the end (you can ask for them to not be be fried in butter if you prefer). Their phone line is very spotty and it can be hard to get a hold of them to place a takeout order, so sometimes you need to go and wait for a bit in person. read more

We started ordering from this little hut when they first opened. Their plates were the best deal in town, and even though they've ( understandably) raised their prices, they still make a solid chicken teriyaki plate. My husband likes the garlic tofu plate. I also often order the beef bulgogi and the miso salmon. Both are yummy, but pretty sweet, so I often ask for the sauce in the side for the salmon. It's fast food, Japanese-style, and our "go to" when busy and wanting something simple, good, and inexpensive. Most plates are under $10. Wow. What a disappointment. I go to Ume frequently but after my last few experiences, I decided I cannot go back. I watched the owner, Tall Asian Guy, thaw and wash meat with hot water then touched vegetables and handled cash without washing his hands. Disgusting. I've also heard the owner yell (basically abusing) his employees. I also heard him tell employees to take shots if alcohol and offered then cider and beers, who appear to be underage. When I opened my box at home and had few bites, I knew already that I just wasted $9. The chicken was stale, looked expired and rubber like. There were pieces of bone still on the chicken. The tofu was delicious, and the tuna was good, but more the consistency of tuna salad, which I wasn't expecting. Each bento was more than enough food for me, and came with a generous portion of sticky rice, half of a hard-boiled egg, piece of orange, and salad. It's just a really nice meal that's fresh and healthy. Service was super friendly and helpful. Ended up with the garlic pork bento. Simple and steamed fresh veggies, perfectly sticky rice, generous portion of yummy thin pork, edamame, half a hard boiled egg, and an orange slice. Felt like quite a deal for $6.00 + $1.00 extra for pork. Filled me up without feeling greasy and it made a wonderful lunch. There are two places called Ume Grill. "Ume Grill Snack Bar" at the Amazon Pool, and "Ume Grill Onigiri House" food cart about two blocks north in the Humble Bagel parking lot. I'm not sure what their relationship is to each other, but I ate at the food cart yesterday. I got the kalbi plate (Korean style short ribs), a "baked egg" (which was actually a fried egg and delicious), and two types of onigiri (Japanese grilled riceball) - tuna furikake (tuna based rice seasoning) and kimchi sesame (Korean style spicy fermented cabbage with sesame). The short ribs were delicious, but seemed more like a one person portion rather than for two people as mentioned on the menu. Along with the short ribs were salad, small portion of grilled veggies, generous amount of rice (which was cooked perfectly), a container of toasted sliced almonds, and some yummy tahini dressing. The onigiri were excellent - much better than the ones at Meiji Izakaya. The were huge, generously filled, and grilled in miso butter. Probably the best onigiri I have ever had, including when I lived in Japan. The Japanese woman taking orders and cooking spoke really cute broken English. There was also a man in the back of the cart who I'm guessing was her husband. While the food was excellent, I think the plate meal was a little overpriced and the service was slow. I don't mind that it took so long since I think it was due to her putting so much attention into each dish she was preparing. read more

This review would've gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for the long wait. I ordered 6 Onigiri rice balls which took 30 plus minutes prob because there was 2 workers and 2 orders ahead of mine. Damn! The food was bussin! I was traveling from Hawaii where plate lunches like this are common so I had to give this place a try. We ordered an assortment on onigiris, a bulgogi plate, and salmon plate. The onigiris were okay but we loved the plate lunches! The bulgogi was very flavorful and the salmon had a nice crunchy outside with a tender inside. I liked how they put the miso flavor on the rice as well because it really added a lot of flavor. The salad that's included with the plate lunches are also great and leveled up from a typical plate lunch salad! My mom and I received a flyer from this place in the mail so we decided to give it a try on November 29, 2020 I must say we had no clue what we were walking into at all but when we got there three staff was working that day the guy who rang us up was so nice that was a plus and the cooks were cool!
