While in Folsom on Friday, my friend, daughter and I wanted to check out this Umami Ramen - which was named one of the top places to eat in Sacramento! We arrived around 5pm, ordered at the counter and found a table in the back. I loved seeing all of the mystery boxes, trinkets and snacks available for purchase! They also offered a nice drink selection and even ice creams - we purchased one of the way out! I loved the inside - there were lights strung throughout the ceiling and even some greenery as well - the bathroom even had fun murals painted throughout like Dragon Ball Z and One Piece! We ordered Truffle Garlic Edamame, Pan Fried Gyoza, Black Garlic Tonkotsu, Spicy Tonkotsu and a side of thick noodles and broth for my daughter! Everything was fresh and tasty! My only compliant was that I thought my Black Garlic Tonkotsu could have used some spice - that was my error though! The noodles were nice and chewy, the pork was tender and the jammy egg was perfect! We left full and satisfied! I would recommend checking out Umami Ramen if you're in the area or just in the mood for some really good food with a fun atmosphere! We'll be back again!
This is one of my favorite ramen restaurants ever. You order at the kiosk, take a number, and sit down. The servers will then bring you water and food. I got the black garlic tonkotsu. It is so good! The broth is perfectly seasoned, and creamy. I like to get the thick noodles for more chewy texture. It comes with an egg, chashu pork, scallion, and bamboo. Basically everything I usually get in a ramen bowl. I finished everything from noodles, toppings, and soup, that's how delicious it is! They also have a $25 and $45 combo, which are great for lunch.
Recommend by family and it was so good . I ordered the black garlic ramen and it definitely had a strong umami taste . It was not spicy but they have chili oil and powder that you can add that makes it even better , and the egg was cooked perfectly ! The service was great. The restaurant is smaller but really cute how they have japanese figurines and merchandise for sale . The kids really love it !
We were in the area looking for ramen and I came across an old Reddit post that said Umami was the best in the area. We decided to take a chance and drove 25-30 minutes from downtown Sac and so happy we did because this place was awesome! Ordering using the kiosk is nice and easy. We had one Spicy Tonkotsu and one Spicy Paitan so we could try out both the pork and chicken broths. We also ordered the pepper karaage. The karaage was good - the chicken was really tender and juicy. Since they were tossed in a sauce, they weren't the most crispy, but I think that's to be expected. Still, they were pretty tasty. The sauce was a bit sweet, which we both didn't like as much so we'd probably stick with the regular karaage next time. Both broths were super rich, creamy, and flavor-packed. The spice level was good - decent heat, but not overpowering. Their default noodles are thinner, which offers some pros - the soup really sticks to them, which is great. The downside is the texture - these still had a good bite, but not really a good chew like you'd get with a thicker noodle. We'll probably try the thicker noodles next time. Overall, the broth here is next level. It is almost certainly one of the best broths we've had in the Sacramento area and we would absolutely drive the 30 minutes again to grab another bowl!
I can't believe I haven't left a review yet!! Okay so we came back from Japan.. this place is better!! Absolutely hands down the best ramen, it is so flavorful every single time! We seriously come here twice a week. We have tried every single Ramen, I absolutely love the spicy miso and the black garlic!! my family now drives from Sacramento to come and eat here and the workers are fantastic!! very helpful always have a smile on their face!
This is my favorite Ramen, the broth is perfect every time. We love the choice of the thin noodles or the thick noodles, both are delicious. Each ramen had pork, egg, mushrooms and bamboo shoots. We added corn to one and extra noodles to the other. Plenty of parking and plenty of seating inside. There are two kiosk's to order or they can help you order at the counter
Such a cute and fun ambience. Love the little shop of Japanese snacks. The fried chicken bowl was huge and delicious although so hot it took a bit to cool down. They make their own rice triangles! The only thing was our food didn't come all at the same time and we had finished the bowl by the time everything else came. But definitely a great place!
Hi-ya! This ramen place has a fun ambience--very anime--ish. But this place has such good ramen. The service is good, ordering easy: kiosk or in person. Food comes out fast, even when busier and it's tasty. The black mushroom tonkatsu ramen with fat noodles. So good. We've come here a few times for lunch the last few weeks--and you can quickly get in, eat and out. Really suggest to check this place out as we've enjoyed it and they are consistent with service and flavor.
Umami's decor was super cool to see! They sell Japanese sodas and blind boxes, and anime keychains! It's super spaced out. You can order from their kiosk upon walking up to their front counter. The ramen came out pretty fast, and it was good for the most part! But it was a bit salty. The portion was generous, and they had great topping options.
Came here at the award for being a top 10 ramen spot in CA. The katsu don was good, but I really liked the addition of actual hearty chunks of potato. Most restaurants don't bother. My issue was with the ramen, the chashu was so dry. I heard other reviewers say the same thing but it's the first time I've had chashu like this. It was so disappointing the rest of the ramen was lackluster because of it. The noodles themselves were really good, but it's not enough for me to come back. Pepper karaage was a bit spicy and mediocre for me.
Updated review. Food - phenomenal as always. Great Tori paitan and karaage. I'm generously giving a 5 because I've always had good experiences. However. The new staff or newer staff that was hired needs to be trained on customer service and restaurant etiquette. I arrived sometime around 145pm today. Ordered and got my food around 206 (I took a photo and it has a time log). The server came by once after the food was handed out to refill water and then never again. Around 230 I see a staff flip the tag on the door assuming it's cause they are closing for their pm shift. At 235pm the server came to me and said "do you need a to go box?" I said no. And then he asked to take a few plates since I was nearing done. After that he never came back. Here's the problem. I understand you close at 230pm. However professionally it is more appropriate to come by close to closing time to let customers know "we're closing in 5 min. Is there anything I can help you with?" Or even come around then and calmly ask about the food and if I need to go box. The way he did it showed absolutely no care and more along the lines of "hurry up. We're trying to close" extremely rude to try and rush customers in that manner. I hope the owner/manager sees this and trains their staff.
Solid ramen and no complaints at all! Stopped in for a quick lunch while visiting the area. You order at a kiosk and then grab a number and take your seat. While I was there, there was a free 4-piece California roll promotion that came with a bowl of ramen. The California roll was solid and even better because it was free! My black garlic tonkotsu was tasty and exactly as I would expect. The noodles were cooked well, the broth was flavorful, and the egg was cooked perfectly!

Although we have been here a few times, we have always loved our dishes. I just want to let you know, if you are looking for a delicious ramen cuisine, this is where to go! We also realized that they also offer more than just ramen dishes - rice bowls and a variety of appetizers which are also great. Clean dining space, great service and friendly staff! This is on our "rotation" for sure. Today we enjoyed the spicy Tonkotsu ramen, Mazemen (no broth) Ramen, as well as the umami bun appetizer. They have a special in June where you get potstickers with every ramen order. We did not realize that until after the order. Score!! Those were delicious! Our third time here. After two Yelp events, we ventured into this popular ramen shop for a bluefin dinner theater dubbed "The Tuna Cutting Show - a special culinary experience for the senses". House was packed as the diners were escorted for a photo with the fresh bluefin tuna flown-in from the Baja peninsula. Umami Ramen was transformed into a festive venue. After brief intros, the master chef proceeded in slicing the 100lb+ fish into consumption sized portions. Starters served were edamame, special miso soup, mini-grilled pork chasu bun and chawanmushi while the guests watch the fish transform from a giant catch into prized, melt-in-your-mouth cuts. House made sauces of ponzu, lemon and freshly grated wasabi were at the table for dipping the expressions of sashimi, nigiri (sushi), temaki (handroll) and aburi (seared). The customers fasted on all-you-can-eat slices of akami (lean), chutoro (medium-fatty) and otoro (fatty belly). To end this fishy meal, we got a very appropriate dessert of Yuzu Calpico Jelly & Mango Ice Cream. Despite a full-house, the crew were of top of their game handing out the tuna and bussing tables as well. We left very full. read more

We pre ordered the special wagyu ramen for Mother's Day weekend. There was a line waiting before the restaurant opened but once you get inside, you just have to give them your name to check in. Ramen spicy 4/5 too spicy for me but it's good karaage 5/5 crispy and juicy read more

Oh girlllllllll. Did you say comfort and healing food! The outside is unassuming but when those doors open when the welcome of fun anime figurines, ramen house vibes, and snacks galore! You order your ramen at the self ordering check out registers. The ramen and waters are brought to the table. The ramen was made with love and my soul felt uplifted. The seasoned eggs are amazingggg. Great spot for a quick, flavorful lunch! Stopped by Umami Ramen during my lunch break and was pleasantly surprised. You order at the front kiosk and grab a number which was super easy and efficient. The inside is decorated really cute, with little snacks and fun toys for sale that give it some charm. I ordered the Spicy Tonkotsu and it was delicious. You can choose your spice level. I went with mild, and it had just the right amount of kick. I also liked that you can pick your noodle type, which is a nice touch. The broth was rich and flavorful, just how I like it. Only one small thing, I wish they'd cut the egg in half for you, but that's really minor. Overall, it's a great choice if you're craving ramen and short on time. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've never had Ramen before (except the kind you ate in college that came in a square package) I was completely impressed! I dined with my daughter and her partner who have had ramen plenty of times. They said this is the best ramen they have eaten. I'll take their word for it since they are foodies! I enjoyed mine (R-9) it was super spicy just the way I liked it. I'm obsessed! My new favorite ramen spot in Folsom! My go-to is their Spicy Tonkotsu -- the flavor, broth, and noodles are perfect. I love that their ramen comes with a full egg, and you can order extra for just $1/egg. I always get an extra! The egg is the best part. The ramen includes two generous slices of charred pork belly, and I love that you can choose the type of noodle you want. My husband is all about the thin noodles, while I prefer the regular ones. They sell little Japanese knick-knacks and merch along with other small bites. We had the chicken karrague, and it was pretty good. You place your order at a kiosk or the counter and grab a number. We never had seating issues, but when it gets busy, you do have to watch for an open table, which can be hard if you are waiting in line to order. It did make me wonder what happens if there are more orders than available seats. read more

Mind blown! Came here for their 3 year anniversary celebration! Every ramen was $3.90, one bowl per customer. Great deal that couldn't pass on it. Loved their decorations. For their special day, they took the orders at the counter. We ordered Tonkatsu ramen, Black garlic tonkatsu ramen, Pepper chicken karaage and Umami's bun. Everything was really good. Tonkatsu ramen - it was flavorful. I definitely tasted the umami in their broth. The egg was cooked perfectly. One of the best ramen eggs I've ever had. Pepper chicken karaage - the star dish! It was crunchy, tender, juicy, yummylicious! Sweet and savory at the same time. Highly recommend. I wished they would give more pieces haha. Definitely an upgrade from the original chicken karaage. Umami's bun - the pork was kinda thin but I enjoyed it. The sauce on the pork was sweet, which I liked. Services were quick, friendly and attentive even though it was a busy day. Really good ramen that's worth the trip. Visiting from out of town for a swim meet. We came here last year and it was good enough that we had to come again when we were in town. This year they have added kiosk ordering, which is nice because you can do customizations easily. Miso ramen was a good sized portion and very flavorful. Tonkatsu ramen got a thumbs up too. read more
If you want delicious Ramen , then don't waste your time at other places and head on over here! I just had to try this place since I heard it was top notch. It did not disappoint and was really delicious! I ordered the spicy ramen with thick noodles, I chose mild. It was so full of flavor, the broth was creamy rich and yummy. The noodles had a nice chew and the pork and egg were delicious. I just wish it was piping hot. The chicken karaage was juicy and the pieces were large, one of the best I've ever had. Best Ramen in the Sacramento area! Ever since we got back from Japan, we've been looking for a place to have Ramen, and after trying multiple places, we happened upon Umami! Umami is hands down by far the best Ramen we've had in this area! The service is great, the atmosphere is perfect, and the Ramen is delicious! A rainy drive back to the bay area from snow boarding in Tahoe all day, we found this ramen spot in Folsom. Perfect for the cold gloomy weather to warm up our body. The restaurant is quite spacious inside. Right side are all tables. Left side has a bunch of cool things you could buy including food and drinks. You order at the 2 kiosk in the front and take a number. Once your food order is done someone will bring it to your table. We didn't wait too long for our food to arrive. Food recommendation: - pan fried gyoza (really like this. Wish the bottom was a little crispier tho) - shio ramen (has a nice yuzu hint. I wanted something lighter and the thin noodles was perfect. I dropped in on a lazy weekend just before noon. I have not been back here in a while. .Right when I stepped in, I noticed the interior setup changed quite a bit. The kitschiness of the anime, trinkets, Japanese snack food, claw game machine, and toy collectible baubles for purchase is abundant. Visual sensory overload. All of that was not here the last time I dined here. I had to take a quick glance around to make sure I was in the right place. Yup, I was in Umami Ramen. After I weaved past folks gawking at the snacks and stuff, I made it to the self ordering kiosks. There was no human person taking orders, so I used the kiosk. I would have preferred the human interaction to ask questions. I had to read the kiosk board a few times regarding the ramen topping options, it is mark options it if you do not want it versus want it. After I ordered my food and took my table number sign, I meandered around gawking at all their merch. Neat stuff that I want and of course do not need. Besides the items near the front door, they have more merch on the back wall near the restroom. Plus they have snacks on the merch shelf, Japanese ice cream in the cooler by the front door, and a cold case of Japanese sodas and juices. My order of black garlic tonkatsu ramen took a little bit over 20 minutes after ordering. The big, piping hot bowl was set in front of me. It looked gorgeous, picture perfect. The egg was cooked with the yolk having a nice, classic jammy consistency and served cold in the hot broth as it should be. The pork slices were seared, that added more flavor to it. The broth was more flavorful than I remembered. Deep umami flavor. Yum. Slurp-luscious. But it hit me hard a few hours later. I have MSG food intolerance. I found out later the broth had MSG. I got a migraine and tummy ache. My issue, not theirs. I can handle MSG in small quantities. I am in that statistical 1% of the population having MSG intolerance. Lucky me. So if I eat significant amounts, I get a migraine and other not so fun symptoms depending on the quantity consumed. I did not have this problem before eating here. But it is not uncommon for ramen places to use MSG. read more
Food The bottom ramen was the Spicy Tonkotsu ( Thin Noodles ). I got the medium spice level, which was such a good one. Enjoyed the broth, it didn't feel too heavy. A full egg was given and two big pieces of meat. The combination of the vegetables and everything that was in this ramen was perfect. The ramen came out at a good temperature and it was served hot. Service You order at a kiosk and then place the number plate. Once you sit down at the table after the food is ready then they bring out the food to you. The experience of this store is really cute. At the front of the store, there is a mini store where they have Japanese drinks and candy along with some anime items. There is a parking lot. Very enjoyable for you or your family. Would visit this restaurant again and try the different ramen options. read more

Food is always DELICIOUS. Our spicy tonkatsu was a tiny bit too spicy but we just had lots of water and ate it slower haha we also got the chicken, gyoza, and edamame (large portion). Chicken was so good my bf wanted another order even though he was full. Let's talk about these surprise decorations though! Didn't expect to see it look so cute when we walked it and it was such a lovely atmosphere! The playlist was all love songs (oldies). Service on such a busy night was surprisingly excellent! Our appetizers came out quick and held us over since the ramen took a bit longer than usual. The timing of getting us the appetizers and letting us enjoy our meal was perfect though so I highly recommend getting appetizers if you notice it's a busy night. Wish they had a water refill station so we wouldn't have to bug the person bussing the tables for a refill. Sweet touch to give us all a Valentine's Day treat too thank you for an excellent night! read more

I heard about this place through friends. Parking is easy and plentiful. They have a small area for refrigerated food and Knick knacks. To order, you use the kiosk to order. The food comes out pretty quick so it's a short wait time. It had more of a fast food vibe. Good place to go to if you're looking for an easy, quick bite to eat. Pros: broth is pretty good, a little on the salty side. The portions are good. Cons: none read more

Wow! The Black Garlic Tonkotsu at this place is amazing. That broth is probably the best I've had out here and it's not even close. The chashu was juicy and tender with a slight melt in your mouth feel. Add the egg and the thick noodles and this really just hit the spot. The owners are great people and got a chance to meet them and they are great down to earth people. Love the vibe and decor of this place as well with the anime flair and the Japanese snacks for sale. Is the veggie ramen vegan or vegetarian?
Our veggie ramen is vegetarian, we use egg noodles and provide a seasoned egg on the side.
Will you be offering gluten free noodle options? Like rice noodle, glass noodle?
Currently we have thick noodles (egg noodles) and thin noodles (wheat). We don’t have gluten free options as of now.
