Umami is a breath of fresh air to the Bellevue area that seems a bit inundated with fast food restaurants. Focusing on Sushi, but also offering non-sushi options (orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, vegetables, etc), Umami does about as good of a job a sushi place can do in the middle of the US. Seating is very expansive, with tables and booths, and I've never had a problem getting right in, even during the Offutt lunch rush. The inside definitely has a more casual feel than places like Blue or Yoshitomo. I have tried most of the roll options (spicy tuna, tuna, salmon, eel, etc), and even a bit of the Sashimi. The rolls are great, on par with some of the other good sushi joints around town. Label me a bit of a snob, but I have never been able to enjoy Sashimi in Nebraska, it just always has a bit of a fishy taste that ruins it for me (just not as fresh as coastal cities). The lunch bento box is my go-to. It runs around $9, comes with an entree (sushi, teriyaki chicken, etc), a soup and salad, rice, California roll and fruit! All in all, Umami is a great lunch spot for those working in the Bellevue area, or a nice casual dinner spot. read more

I saw this restaurant on my insta feed and decided to go on a whim and I am so happy that I did! I think it's one of the best sushi restaurants. I walked in, ambiance was chill and super clean. I would definitely recommend Umami for sushi/Japanese food in the Omaha area. The sushi taste fresh, and they are generous with pieces of raw fish in the sushi rolls, which I really appreciate. The sashimi order tasted very good but unlike in the rolls, the slices of raw fish were quite small for the price, so I would probably not recommend as much. Steak hibachi dinner portion was good, but a bit over-cooked and not the best I've had. The portion size was generous. My favorite items were definitely the seaweed salad and the plain and simple sushi rolls - tuna, salmon, yellowtail. Overall, I would highly recommend this place for good sushi in The Omaha area. Our second visit to this amazing place! The sushi was all perfectly fresh and the salmon belly melts in your mouth. The tempura apps came out crunchy and the sauce was perfect. We split the combo Lo Mein for the table as there was plenty. Our server was attentive courteous and accommodating. Arguably the best sushi in Nebraska. If not the Midwest. The fish quality is extremely good. I highly recommend getting a chance to do an Omakase meal at the sushi bar or at least trying their Nagri. They probably have the whitest variety of fish that has flown in fresh multiple times a week. I have really been blown away by the share quality of traditional sushi options. This is no blue or hiro with really Americanized rolls. This is some high quality nigiri/sashimi. The sushi for two is an amazingly affordable option with great nigiri and sushi. My anticipation was high - my aunt and uncle wanted to take us to Bellevue for sushi. The chef trained under Jiro! I knew this was going to be good based on what I saw on yelp photos. When we walked in for 5:30 PM reservations on a Saturday, this place was PACKED! There were so many staff members too - chefs and servers and bussers everywhere, what a good sign. My grandma is not a sushi eater, but she came along. When we were first seated, someone at the table across the way recognized my uncle and said he was my cousin's (my uncle's daughter) prom date many moons ago - we cracked up. Of all the gin joints! His wife suggested we get crab rangoons (yes, not Japanese) so my aunt ordered them for an appetizer. My grandma got a shrimp tempura dinner which also came with all of the tempura vegetables too, plus soup, salad, and rice. My uncle and aunt shared several rolls and my uncle got his favorite ebi sushi. My brother got a salmon skin salad and the chirashi. He thought the salad was awesome but the chirashi, while it was high quality, was not enough food for him so he was glad he ordered the salad. I opted for nigiri mostly. From the day's specials I started with aji three ways: the fish body fried for me after I finished the raw part of the plate (but not the head, which was a bummer). The aji was prepared as chopped and mixed with green onions as nigiri, as tartare, and as sashimi. It came with shiso leaf and shredded daikon. This was awesome and very unique. For nigiri, I got o-toro from the specials and wow was it fatty (see photo), amaebi with fried heads (chopped short though), yellowtail belly, scallop, and uni. The scallop was awesome -it was a Japanese scallop and had yuzu kosho underneath it where one usually finds wasabi. I loved the combination. The uni was not in a gunkan but rather served on top of a seaweed chip on the rice. I finished with a salmon and avocado handroll. I loved everything I ate - the quality was great and the service was efficient. My grandmother who loves shrimp decided to be brave and try my uncle's coconut shrimp roll. She really struggled to eat the piece of maki in her mouth and decided it was better just to eat the shrimp inside than the rest of the stuff around it. It felt like a higher-end Asian restaurant, yet the reasonable prices and locations would have suggested otherwise. I was pleased by the amount of vegetarian options, including notes in the menu that they will work with any dietary needs/restrictions that you might have. The soy garlic edamame was very good and big enough to share between two. The panang curry with tofu was very flavorful and spicy enough to meet my hopes. Umami is my favorite raw sushi place in Omaha (at least of those that I have tried). I have had the opportunity to eat some high end sushi places around the world and Umami was comparable in some aspects for a much cheaper price. We got the Sushi for 2, which is 18 pieces of fish + 3 rolls. We subbed the crunchy California roll out for a Tempura one. Overall, our experience was very good. The fish was flavorful and felt fresh, despite us (Nebraska) not being coastal. The preparation was a level above the competition that I have tasted in Omaha. The rolls were very well done as well and comparable to some of the other decent sushi restaurants in Omaha. I would recommend ordering sushi while coming to Umami. That is not to say that the General Tsos chicken is poorly done (and I am a fan of General tsos); just that there are likely better, cheaper restaurants who can do those dishes (and probably higher quality as well). Umami specializes in sushi, and they do it very well. I will be returning to Umami in the future. read more

I have been hyping Umami up to a friend of mine and I finally got him to join me for dinner. It was his first time at Umami, so I figured why not call ahead and request an Omakase dinner (call a week in advance). I have done this myself previously, but WOW, Chef Keen and his staff knocked this one out of the park. From Pacific Oysters to Kohada to Japanese Barracuda to Hakkaido Waygu, everything we were served was excellent. We received anywhere between 15-18 pieces (some pictures attached) starting with lighter dishes and gradually moving up to the heavier dishes. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone that enjoys a variety of nigiri/sashimi. Again, highest of praises to Chef Keen and his staff for continuously blowing my mind and taste buds.
