My friend and I are regulars at Ugly Crab and have been for a while. We usually order the Super Seafood Combo and it never disappoints--until this most recent visit. We noticed right away that something was different. The sauce, which is normally rich, buttery, and full of flavor, tasted noticeably off--it was more watery and lacked the usual punch. On top of that, the seafood didn't seem as fresh or high-quality as it normally is. It just didn't feel like the Ugly Crab experience we've come to love. We're loyal customers and will absolutely continue to support this place because we've had so many great meals here. But we were honestly shocked and disappointed by how far off this visit felt compared to what we're used to. Hoping it was just a fluke and things are back to normal next time.

The food was decent so that was at least worth the 1 star even though it still wasn't made properly. I called in a Togo order on the 20th around 7 pm and first of all it took about 10 minutes to place the order because from what I was told when arriving, he was the cook and didn't really know what he was doing. I gave him my number several times for my order and he kept asking if it was xxxx in which I would reply no again. I finally asked to speak to the female who pulled up my transaction history and I told her I wanted EXACTLY what I order everytime I come in which is pretty often. She said she could see what that was and told me how long it would be and the price. It was a couple of dollars more than normal but inflation seems to always be on the rise so it's whatever. I pick up my order to find out instead of my normal 3 piece corn (which i always pay extra for) wasn't in the bad and she only gave me 1. I called back and asked to get my missing pieces and she argued with me for what seemed like a total of 5 minutes over the corn trying to tell me I didn't ask for it when I specifically said I wanted all my extras as usual including the potatoes, corn and sausage. She said I didn't order the extra corn and it doesn't come with it which I then questioned how I've been able to get it each time then and why did my order come to more money for less food? She had no answer. As i stated previously, i have a specific order I continuously purchase so I know the quantity I should receive for what I pay. When I got home and started dishing out the food, the quantity seemed much less than normal so I decided to weigh it. Sure enough, I didn't get what I paid for and I got about 8 mini pieces of sausage for the ridiculous upcharge. Half of the black mussels either didn't have anything in them or they were so small you could barely get a taste. Not only that but my son hates spice so I get the garlic sauce which is an additional $5 which they charged me for yet it was still spicy. This was a HORRIBLE experience. I would definitely recommend watching out for this location if not all as they are scamming people out of the food which is probably saving them millions. I will definitely NOT BE COMING BACK.

This place was saucy and seasoned! And dare I say buttery. It was so good! Crab Rangoon with a side of seafood boil! I really enjoyed eating here, the seafood boils were fun to eat and tasty and had no issues! The restaurant was clearly popular and kept a steady number of guests. There's dine in and take out. Ambiance was fine, the attention was paid to the food!

I am not a novice in terms of seafood boil- we ordered for the garlic butter sauce & I am not quite impressed BUT love the size of their dungenees crab. I enjoyed the fried food more- crab rangoon & their fries! Space is clean, quiet & service is okay.

The owner is SO sweet, always offering up samples and letting us know about the new flavors they have out. We most recently stopped in here for some scoops of strawberry ice cream after dinner Monday night, but will usually stop in here before or after taking the dogs on a walk at the nearby YMCA trail or Washington Township Park. It was the perfect way to kick off some warm weather and I highly recommend stopping in and trying one of their MANY delicious flavors of ice cream, sundaes, esquites, or mangonadas.

Danny's has a great selection of flavors to choose from as far as ice cream. I sampled the Honeycomb and OMG!!!! It melted in my mouth. I tried the Cheeto Equite and to my surprise, it wasn't as spicy as I was thinking it would be. It's served warm. Personally, not my favorite because hot Cheetos is not my thing, but I can say that I've tried it. Now, the Churro Sundae is more of my thing. The churros are not made in-house. I opted for vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. I would have like a few more pieces of churros, layered throughout, but it didn't take away from my liking. I'd get it again on another visit. Danny's is a clean, well kept ice cream shop with good service. He's tucked away in a plaza; sitting off Rockville Road. But once you step inside, you'll be in a little bit of ice cream heaven.

I've joked about the donut wars going on in Avon, Indiana as my life has taken me through Hendricks…read moreand Putnam counties quite a bit lately. Avon has at least four donut shops within 1-2 miles of each other - Parlor, Dunkin, Pana, and Carl's. Of these, Carl's is clearly the "local" shop. It has the look and feel of a gathering place. While the others do offer sit-down dining, especially Parlor, Carl's feels like a smalltown donut joint with its simple but pleasant decor, lower pricing, and comfortable but pleasing service. Carl's Donuts & Bakery is a locally owned donut shop (Pana is also locally owned, though a growing chain). Carl's also doubles as a cafe and also serves other breakfast items alongside its donuts. The major plus to this approach for a guy like me is that fountain drinks are available including iced tea. I'm constantly dismayed how hard it is to get iced tea in donut shops. I was dismayed to read Jen F's review noting poor customer service as my experience was quite the opposite with customer service being a key strength. The basics: Carl's is located in what looks like a small office complex with a mix of retail and personal service type businesses. It's toward the back. There's some accessible parking and appropriate curb cuts. There's a double entry with glass doors that were pretty easy to manage. As you enter, a dining area is directly to the front of you and to the right side. To the left is the ordering area - I think I goofed up at entry - you begin toward the back and then exit out the front path. I went in through the front, though there wasn't a line and no one said anything. The employees asked if I was ordering breakfast or donuts. I typically get 2-3 donuts and a drink. I stuck with this plan, however, given the comfy atmosphere opted to dine in. I haven't had much time to rest recently and it was nice to sit down. I felt a little out of place (everyone else was clearly local), though everyone was friendly. I ordered chocolate covered yeast donuts and a fountain unsweetened iced tea. They offer discounts, it seems to military, teachers, and first responders. The donuts had a slightly thicker yeast than some that lean toward fluffy. These were more substantial. The chocolate reminded me of Titus Bakery. The iced tea was great - no clue on brand. I could have stuck with two donuts instead of three and been satisfied. The service was a top feature here for me. They were friendly, helpful, and patient as I figured things out. I watched them easily serve a group of senior males gathering in one corner (pouring coffee, etc.). Carl's does not have a drive-thru. Their Facebook indicates they offer curbside pick-up. In future visits, I'd likely experiment with donuts. This particular chocolate is not a favorite for me. I enjoyed it, but I'd easily experiment. There's no doubt I'd return for the service. At a time when I've recently lost my last family member, it was nice to be in a comfortable, welcoming, and warm environment. It did my spirit good. I would also love to return to enjoy a meal here. Carl's wasn't packed, but it was steady throughout my visit and it's clear that Avon loves its donuts and it loves its smalltown gathering spaces.

There was a line of people waiting patiently to select their donuts when we walked in. There were many cases filled with fresh donuts, fritters, danish, turnovers and more. Two clerk were assisting customers, most of whom were buying several dozen donuts. I got a glazed donut and my husband got an apple fritter. The fritter was bigger than his head. My glazed donut was a cake donut. It was light with a perfect glaze. The apple fritter was like a coffee cake with lots of apples and a glazed topping. He shared the fritter with our granddaughters. There was plenty to go around. The cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have daily meal specials. The lady in line ahead of us said the pork tenderloin is the best in town. Pork tenderloin is only served Monday-Thursday. We'll have to come back. They have about 20 tables for eat-in dining. There is a unisex restroom. Stop #4 of the donut trail will require a return visit.

I must admit that despite my reporting on the apparent donut wars in Avon Indiana, with no less…read morethan five different donut shops in the growing town, I'd completely forgotten about the presence of Rise n' Roll Bakery until I happened to be on my way out to Putnam County and happened to look over and see the shop in a relatively small strip center. Rise n' Roll was founded in Middlebury, Indiana by an Amish family as an offshoot of the family's selling of donuts from the porch of their Shipshewana home. Established a Rise n' Roll in 2004, it stayed relatively small for years. The original bakery didn't use electricity, refrigeration, or modern tech. Everything was by hand. In 2009, the Amish owner sold the company to a non-Amish family. It was moved to a larger facility - the original owner stayed employed by the company and the small bakery began to expand including franchising. In recent years, the Central Indiana presence has grown. Rise n' Roll offers donuts, pastries, Amish goods, deli, and other items. While I was sad to see Rise n' Roll leave their Broad Ripple spot, truthfully I tend to resonate more with its simpler locations (there's now a smaller shop in Nora). This spot in Avon reminds me of Nora. I believe the Indiana-based chain has 16 locations statewide. I'm a definite fan of the chain and have never had a bad experience at any location in terms of product or people. I primarily stick to donuts when coming here, however, I'll occasionally deviate. While I'd say that Rise n' Roll is decked out a bit nicer than Carl's, I felt a similar vibe here. In a town that has multiple options, it's really important to distinguish yourself and Rise n' Roll does that nicely. The cinnamon caramel donut is perhaps its most widely known and beloved option, however, I'm a fan of chocolate frosted (yeast or cake). Donut offerings can vary between locations. Employees here are friendly. The strip center has accessible parking with appropriate curb cuts. The single glass door was pretty manageable. I get the sense they'd easily help if help was needed, though it's obvious that most folks with disabilities prefer independence. Overall, I'd easily claim Rise n' Roll as one of my Avon favorites. I won't dare rank the five, though a quick read of my reviews would likely make it obvious. For a more natural option in a pleasing, welcoming setting it doesn't get much better than Rise n' Roll.

I thought it was going to be smaller pieces in the coffee. I got the lemon Blueberry and cinnamon caramel with Bavarian filling. Will def be back to try more flavors

However, I was feeling a bit nostalgic during this past weekend's trip to Putnam County and decided to stop and really check this retail strip out. I spied The Fudge kettle and knew I had to stop. The Fudge Kettle was started in 2020 - what a time to start a new business, eh? Despite the challenges, it thrived in a different location before locating to this spot in 2023. This is a former Jack's Donuts and it reportedly offered The Fudge Kettle about twice the size of its previous spot along with a variety of other perks. In case the name isn't obvious, The Fudge Kettle specializes in candy, fudge, local crafts, and a variety of other products. Despite being an older strip center, accessibility is pretty strong here with ample parking and curb cuts. The double-sided glass doors are pretty manageable. I found the interior to be nicely designed. I'm a fan of fudge and definitely had to try the fudge while here. Absolutely a delight. You can also get chocolates, freeze-dried candies, and some national brands like Pez, Necco Wafers, Buns, Boston Baked Beans, Rock Candy, Candy Cigarettes (Yes, I'm old enough to also remember when candy cigarettes were considered cool), and more. Local crafts include candles, keychains, t-shirts, wreaths and more. I'm a huge candle fan and I definitely prefer supporting local. So, this is a great find. I will note that new owners took over - I believe in 2023. It seems like there's some shifting going on and the website indicates that new products are coming soon. However, I liked what I saw here and the employee I dealt with was friendly and helpful. I found the prices to be fair, the quality to be amazing, and this just feels like a really welcoming spot. This shopping strip is a little more off the road than most. You really have to look to see The Fudge Kettle, however, it's definitely worth looking for and making a quick stop. Will I return? Absolutely.
