Seated at the bar- the bartender really couldn't be bothered with me as he was too busy bro lancing the dudes from denver ( use those terms cause they keep saying bro and dude and hand slapped like 12 time) they invited him to Denver and he promised them a hook up at the Carlton and In Miami cause he knows the boss- don't mind any of that but when the server asked if he had anyone needing help his response was "no just this girl" and continued to ignore me as he went about his bromance. How offended would you be if you arrived with your friends, *completely sober*, to celebrate a birthday only to be told when you're seated that you can't order a round of drinks until you first order food. When you ask your waiter for an explanation, he tells you he was told by management that you were not to be served without food, but can't tell you why beyond that. When your appetizers are brought to the table, you are told that you *still* can't order drinks until you order more food. Excuse me....what?! When you repeatedly ask to speak to the manager, you are told that they will come to your table and address the issue, but they never have the courtesy (or respect) to do so. How would you feel? According to a Google review from 2 months ago, this is not the first time Uchi has done this. They profiled a man who was limping and had recently had a stroke as 'intoxicated' (even though he hadn't been drinking) and also refused to serve him. I'd be willing to bet it was the same manager on duty that night. Obviously this person should not be in a customer-facing management role because they make terrible decisions, throw their wait staff under the bus, and are too much of a coward to stand behind the decisions they make. It is literally the manager's job to SAY IT TO MY FACE. There were a myriad of choices that could have been made that would have addressed whatever imaginary issue management had with our (let me repeat) COMPLETELY SOBER group that wouldn't have ruined our evening and made us feel completely disrespected - the worst possible choice being how they actually handled it. I'd also like to note without further comment that we were a diverse group of friends, and let you make whatever assumptions you would like from that. Cheers. The same was great but unfortunately the food didn't measure up to what I remembered months back the first time I tried this restaurant. I simply couldn't find the items we got that I liked last time. And the items we got except for one roll were par at best. It's always a treat when we are able to visit Uchi. The menu is a bit overwhelming when deciding on what to order because there are so many unique items and not a lot of descriptions of what you're actually getting. Because of that, we tend to order the omakase (chef's choice) or somakase (waiter helps curate/select the items) and trust the restaurant to provide us with the most delicious foods. We have never had anything that we did not like/love. It's a must-try experience if you ever have an opportunity. Even the most basic nigiri sushi will have an unexpected ingredient/sauce/garnish that elevates it to something incredible. I celebrated my anniversary at Uchi on a Saturday night and had an okay experience! My overall thought is that for a place where people spend $80+ a head, I expected more. The restaurant is beautiful and clean, though a bit loud. We were seated at a booth, and we loved how spacious it was. We were given a little card that said "Happy Anniversary", but that was all the celebratory gestures we received. We opted for ordering a handful of dishes from the vegetarian menu, as well as some sake. The sake was really excellent and tasted like honeydew. The two best dishes were the Uchi Salad and the Crispy Tofu roll. They were amazing. The other dishes ranged from good to meh. The fried green tomato katsu wasn't great - the tomato was really hard and kind of oaky. Service was extremely slow. We waited over FORTY MINUTES between receiving our brussels sprouts and the kinoko nabe, even though we ordered it ahead of time. This meal was a lot of waiting paired with pretty subpar service. Our server wasn't notably personable or warm. At the end of the night, we were given a $25 off voucher as an apology for the poor service and long wait times. The caveat is this voucher needs to be used this month, in the next ~2 weeks, which seems unlikely for me. At this price point, I would recommend you go elsewhere! Especially to celebrate a big milestone and moment, they fell short. read more

My wife took me here to celebrate my birthday and it was "off the hook"!!! We sat at the sushi bar and the suggestions of fresh sashimi were spot on. So fresh that most just melted in your mouth. The service from both our waitress and chef were superb. Love the open kitchen design along with the bar. Really gives it more of an authentic Tokyo restaurant. The waiter couldn't tell us what the menu was, it is up to the chef, even it is up to the chef and it still has a menu but not here. We got one piece of fish fillet and shared it, about 2os per persons, lol. One nigiri sushi per person and the rice was sweet and loose, lol x 2. At the end of the night, they acted like a Michelin restaurant and gave us one "today's menu" and one Szechuan chill paste, remember this is Japanese or 2 persons, lol x 3? The serving between each plate is random, sometimes we waited 10 mins and sometimes 20 mins. At the end the bill was almost $400. We didn't get what we paid for, they charged Michelin price and the food quality, presentation and service is a joke. Highly not recommended. Second time I've been here.. both times for happy hour since trying to be a bit on a budget. Happy hour every day 4-6p. Menu changes - check their website though. Prices are accurate! Definitely a hyped spot in Dallas. Even at 4p on a weekend it was 'busy' and by 5-6 it filled up and people were waiting! Happy hour bites are still $10 / small plate basically. Handrolls for sure! Could taste the wasabi in one of them. One of the party was trying to avoid gluten and they were nice enough to bring out a complimentary lettuce wrap thing! Actually heard the happy hour tasting is more like "x bites" and a table was surprised that receiving 2 nigiri was considered 2 bites. Doesn't sound like that good of a deal then? We went for the omakase happy hour which is an absolute steal! Highly recommend, it's a great price and you a great variety of food plus dessert. Karaage was delicious as always. One big complaint from our visit. I have been going to Uchi since it was only an Austin restaurant and the nigiri really really disappointed me last night. I know they typically serve pretty small slices of fish, but I usually find that the rice and the topping (like yuzu kosho or whatever they put for each piece) makes up for it and is some of the best nigiri out there. However, that wasn't the case this time. The rice just wasn't right. Maybe it was overcooked? The texture was completely off, and it almost ruined the nigiri for me. Additionally a couple of our bites had too much of the topping which overwhelmed the raw fish and resulted in too much salt. After having tried both Uchiko and Uchibā (Uchi sister restaurants) in Austin, we had to try Uchi in Dallas. It did not disappoint. We had the "somakase" which is a cool little option they have if you want to try multiple things but are worried that the chef's tasting may be too little or too much food but also don't really want to make decisions. Essentially the way it works is that your server will choose dishes for you based on your hunger level, budget, and preferences. You can do as many or as few as you'd like and if there is something you really like you can just ask for more of it. The service at the Uchi restaurants is always top notch and we love how everyone works together as one cohesive unit marking the service appear seamless from the delivery of the dishes to the clearing of plates and ensuring your beverages are always full. The food is timed perfectly so that the wait between courses is neither too long or too short. Empty plates are taken immediately after you have finished so that they are not sitting on the table for long periods of time. Service is smooth, efficient, and friendly and never seems cold or rushed. The food makes this one of our favorite restaurants to dine in as we always thoroughly enjoy our meals here. We came to Uchi after a long hiatus specifically because the Jasmine Cream dessert finally returned to the menu. One of the best restaurant desserts I've ever had--full stop. Silky jasmine custard, a bright cilantro granita that sounds wild but works perfectly as a palate reset, little bursts of compressed pineapple, and a delicate honey tuile tying everything together. It's the kind of dessert that makes you put your spoon down, look around, and quietly wish you didn't have to share. I came here with very low expectations because Uchiko Plano was a very disappointing experience for me. But the original is obviously the tried and true; our experience here was very good and we enjoyed a lovely anniversary dinner, and showered by a lot of attention by the waitstaff. We felt very special :) Hats off to the exceptional service and friendly conversation from Louis/Luis behind the sushi bar, and his neighbor David. They were modest and not pushy but it was like they were our very chill friends who happened to put together some great sushi. They were the stars of the night, elevating our food that much more and recommending great dishes and perfect pairings. All, and I mean all, the restaurant staff demonstrated a lot of consideration for us guests and plenty of attentiveness without feeling like a stuffy over-the-top classy restaurant. This is a hard balance to strike and they did it very well. Akamutsu was so good we spent pretty much a whole bill just on that. Buttery soft texture with the perfect sear. Honorable mentions include the eggplant nasu nigiri with the perfect crispy edges, ama ebi shrimp, and umi masu (trout belly). This is not a sushi place for purists but the fish is fresh and the sauces and flavor pairings are interesting and fun; desserts are beautiful and delicious to boot. Uchi Dallas... what a stunning restaurant, full of southern charm and incredible hospitality. My friend and I met up in Dallas for dinner and decided to try Uchi. We didn't have a reservation on a Monday night, but the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the host and offered seats at the bar with no wait at all. As soon as we sat down, our server and the sushi chef behind the bar (I think his name was David--apologies if I'm wrong!) welcomed us right away. He was funny, kind, and really took care of us. We went with the Omakase, and I'll be honest I was expecting to still be a little hungry afterward... but I left completely full and incredibly satisfied. Every dish was beautifully plated, expertly crafted, and absolutely delicious. The service was flawless from start to finish, and the atmosphere just made everything feel even more special. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I guess this is what happens when you become a chain restaurant.... For context, I've been to Uchi five times now, and last night made six. What brought me for the first time in over a year in was a $100 coupon in the mail, which should have been a big red flag. 1. We (two females) arrived for an 8 pm reservation at 7:45 pm and were told to wait, so we sat on the bench in the entry. A group of three men arrived shortly thereafter and said they were checking in for an 8 pm reservation. They were offered "bites from the chef" and escorted to their table as soon as they were finished. They literally never even sat down to wait. We waited several more minutes, and despite some extra (individually plated) "bites from the chef" still remaining at the host stand, there was no invitation for us to enjoy them. 2. Our first dish didn't arrive for about 20 minutes after we put the order in. Our waitress actually came over to apologize that the kitchen was "really backed up" tonight. She also added that she had directed the kitchen to course our dishes in a certain order, but she basically told us that might not happen. Sure enough, one of our hot dishes (wagyu daily special) didn't arrive until after they'd already brought out our first round of fish. 3. Oh and that first round of fish? It was the heavier/richer nigiri, like sake toro. A plating of lighter fish, like yellowtail, was brought out at the end of the meal. Completely backwards. The woman who brought the lighter fish carefully identified each one to me and advised me on the order in which to eat them. However, the man who dropped off the heavier/richer fish named them quickly, didn't bother to identify which was which, and immediately walked away without telling me what order to eat them in. 4. Let's go back to that wagyu daily special I mentioned. That was the wagyu tataki, $33.50 for what's essentially a thinly sliced single bite of meat. I'm fine with that if the slivers are worth the price, but they weren't. The meat was overcooked and was served with broccolini instead of bok choy. No explanation or apology for the substitution was ever given. 5. The machi cure ($23.50) was sloppily put together -- uneven cuts of fish, some huge chunks, some tiny slivers -- and was arranged so unevenly that we ended up having to compile our own bites by hand rather than simply grabbing the chips as instructed. 6. Food was taking so long to come out of the kitchen that multiple different people seated on the patio were frequently stepping indoors and looking around trying to find someone to ask about where their food was. (Our table was right in front of the entrance to the patio, so we frequently had people sort of weirdly standing next to us trying to find some help.) 7. The suzuki yaki ($20.50), a grilled striped bass, arrived with the instruction to "crack the skin with your fork." I dutifully tried and failed as the very-not-crisp, very-soggy skin caved inward and splayed the fish in half. It definitely had been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. 8. They don't have foie gras on the menu anymore. I'm not going to get into a debate about the ethics of foie gras here except to say that I've been told that at least one US producer (Hudson Valley Foie Gras) is known for their humane treatment of the ducks (free-range, hand-fed, NOT force-fed). But, do your own research and make your own decisions there. I'm just here to let you know that foie gras is off the menu, and I'm a little sad about it. 9. Usually when I'm eating at Uchi with just one other person and order the Fried Milk ($14), the person taking my order asks if we want to add an extra milk ball since there are only three (because of course there are only three). We didn't get asked that this time, and I forgot to mention it, so then we had to sadly decide who got the third milk ball (they can't be shared because it's liquid inside). But that's arguably not the worst part, which is that it was served without the advertised toasted blondie. It arrived instead on a small pile of chocolate that had the texture of pot-de-creme. The flavors were just...boring. 10. The fish quality just wasn't nearly as good as it has been on previous visits, which I would attribute to a particular change. If you listen carefully, you'll hear the waitstaff describe the toyosu selection -- which used to be flown in daily from Japan -- as their "weekly" selection. (#tariffs!) OVERALL: I get that times are hard, especially for a business built on offering daily fresh fish from Japan. But the quality has suffered GREATLY with weekly fish deliveries. This is the third Uchi location I've been to, and the least impressed I've been. The ambiance is that of a date night spot, similar to the other locations. The difference is organization and speed. We ordered several rolls and nigiri, and twice an order was forgotten. We would also be waiting 10-15 minutes in between rolls. The restaurant wasn't packed so I was confused as to why the service was so slow. The flavor was of course amazing, but I wouldn't come back with a date because of how slow and disorganized the food service was. I didn't have that problem in Denver nor Scottsdale, so I know it can be better. The portions also felt smaller than I remember. Went here for happy hour last week. I eat out as a solo dinner a lot and they made me feel incredibly welcome. I sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chef was awesome Anne made great recommendations. It was beautiful inside and overall just a great experience. read more

Uchi has officially fallen off, I'll say it. Uchi/uchiba/uchiko used to be my absolute favorite spot to celebrate. Their happy hour was my ride or die. I've been going since living in Austin This Dallas location, as you can see from some recent reviews as well, is so hit or miss. To quote another reviewer "overrated, overhyped". Is this just what happens to chains? This recent encounter was a huge miss for me. Management didn't even come to apologize The food overall was ok. Everything did not taste as good as it used to. The once crunchy karaage was soggy... they desperately need to go back to the original dish where they plated the karaage instead of putting it in a box. What's amazing about karaage is the crunch and that was completely missing. The Brussels, which once blew my mind with that fish sauce caramel, was just so sweet and salty in an unbalanced way. The rest of the dishes were ok as well. Nothing really was special. What really upset me was the clay pot mushroom rice dish- kinoko nabe. As I was eating the dish there was sand like material, and I thought at first ok maybe that's just the crunchy, crispy rice bits. Then I felt a really hard bite, crunched down on my tooth and saw something that looked like a pebble. I was like ok what's this and tried to move on. A few bites later there are multiple little pebbles in the food, I wish I took a picture of all of them...the waiter wanted to take them back to see what was going on. Apparently he told me the prep chef forgot to cut the ends of the mushroom the day before? Also why were ends of the mushroom hard as rock? Honestly they looked like pebbles...And why did the chef not notice that before throwing it into the dish? Honestly so frustrating writing this review thinking about how I consumed what was probably dirt from the mushroom. They remade our dish and didn't charge us, but it still just made no sense. I feel like a restaurant charging so much should have trained prep staff and chef to catch errors like this! These things do happens, but when you're paying for a more fine dining experience, that Uchi claims to offer, this really shouldn't happen and not with the extent of non edible ingredients found in the dish...save your hard earn money! Dallas restaurant scene has far better options. The only redeeming grace is their fried milk dish- 5/5 but maybe avoid this location and try the other ones. The service was also mediocre and slow. We saw other staff come around more consistently than our main waiter. TLDR: Uchi is not what it used to be. Dine with caution here. Be ok potentially eating dirt and rocks in your food read more

After hearing all the hype around this place, I have to say that while the fish quality was top tier, the Uchi Omakase experience left a lot to be desired. There was no show stopper or item that really left me wanting to come back or even beyond satisfied. In terms of ambience, the restaurant itself was cozy and our server was attentive and friendly. However the value for money just cannot be justified. My partner and I spent over $500 and for that price were both expecting to be blown away. Can definitely get a better omakase experience at a less mainstream restaurant. read more

Tried the omakase here, and it was pretty good. Really enjoyed the hot stone dish, salmon nigiri, and the hand rolls! The cocktails made with sake were also fantastic and refreshing!! Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We had a peanut allergy in the group, and we appreciated that every time a dish was brought out, the staff confirmed there were no peanuts. Overall, it was a great experience! The complimentary valet parking is also a huge plus! read more

I was utterly blown away by Uchi! My wife and I went for her birthday to try something new. We've heard great things from others, but we weren't sure what to expect. We had a reservation which many others recommend. We asked the waiter to help with recommendations and we built our own meal from the menu. We tried about nine different items. The most standout items had to be the hot plate and the Brussels sprouts (amazing!!). While those were standouts, we enjoyed each of our items. Between the presentation, food, and atmosphere, it was an extremely enjoyable experience. My wife and I would highly recommend Uchi to anyone who is looking for a place to celebrate any event or just enjoy a tasty experience. read more

Overrated, overhyped, and overpriced. I had been so excited trying Uchi for the first time since I missed my chance in Austin! Heard that the Dallas location was even better but I couldn't believe how something this hyped can be so bad. Service: Our server was very knowledgeable but the service was so slow. We had to keep flagging down other employees for items. We requested fresh wasabi and it took them 15 mins to bring out. At which point, we had already almost finished all of our food. Alcohol: Note, they do not have a liquor licenses so there is only sake available. Food: I cannot believe how overpriced the food was and I live in California. Pricing is comparable to Nobu but quality does not even measure. The fish was served warmer than room temperature and tasted very fishy. I should have known not to go to a sushi restaurant in a city that is nowhere near the ocean. We had dinner for three with three drinks each, a carpaccio plate, and 5-6 pieces of nigiri. Total came out to $586 and we weren't even close to being full. read more
