The GOOD: staff is pleasant, my bike no longer squeaks The BAD: my $100 tune-up turned into a $400 job. I rode the bike once since it was tuned-up by them last time. So my $500 bike is now a $900 bike. I cant help but to think they were looking for barely marginal items and took advantage of that. The UGLY: they left rust on some main parts--that was part of the reason I brought the bike in. Derailer misaligned although it's a pretty easy tweek to get it back. Gave me back 96 cents in change. You might figure with a $400+ bill they would just round it and give a buck back. If you're in the market for a new cycle, I strongly recommend that you go see Vince Gonzalez (and his colleagues) at UC Cycling! Although I'm fairly new to the cycling scene, I have the benefit of having 2 neighbors who are accomplished cyclists and, it was them, that suggested I go to UC Cycling. And I'm glad that I followed their suggestion. Vince was very personable, knowledgeable, answered all my questions (even those I emailed to him after my first visit to the store), and made some much appreciated suggestions as to the bike and components he thought would be best for me based on the information we discussed. These guys are great! This review is about 20 years late... I got my first bike from them back in the 90s as a kid and loved that mountain bike. I recently had my dad's vintage bike tuned up and they were awesome... brought it back to life and made it look almost brand new again! I find their staff to be friendly and helpful, not pushy at all and realistic with your individual needs. Their retail side focuses on Specialized bikes but have a wide range of products for every rider. I've been to a few other shops over the years but these guys stand out as a diamond in the rough. I was turned away before I could even ask about an appointment for a tune-up, stating they aren't taking any new customers. Good for them that they are a busy business during covid, but terrible customer service. I have never been to a bike shop that was so unhappy to see a customer. SUPER RUDE workers. Went Friday for some tires, asked the worker which tire is best for my bike and he was rolling his eyes the whole time and just disappeared for like ten minutes too , also the workers were slow and made fun of the long name of the lady in front of me .. Like they didn't believe that was her name. And I thought maybe it's just Friday, but no.. The next day I came here to exchange my item and again the workers were rude against I was in line in front of the worker... And said I'm purchasing this item.. He says nothing. Don't make an online purchase with hopes of an easy in-store pickup!! I made an online purchase in the morning and went to the store midday. They had no record of the purchase and literally grabbed one off the shelf. No big, right? Wrong. They wanted me to buy it (again) and said, "don't worry, this morning's purchase will drop off your credit card charges when you deny the purchase through your online credit card website". Wait, WHAT? I already bought it once (showed them the confirmation email multiple times), and they want me to buy it AGAIN? Then the real story came out... They have ONE GUY who knows anything about online orders. He wasn't there and according to a store employee he rarely is. Makes me wonder if this is a direct result of this shop being swallowed up by Specialized, like so many other neighborhood shops. BUYER BEWARE! read more

Excellent, excellent place!! The folks are lovely, service is great, location is perfect! They always greet you with a smile - and not one of those fake ones either, you know what I mean;) I truly recommend this bike store. I bought my son's bike from here with training wheels. When time came to remove the wheels, I took it in. Within minutes they took the bike in and accomplished the job for me and didn't even charge me anything - did it for FREE! Bought my first bike in San Diego from them, decided to go elsewhere for the 2nd bike after the first bike was destroyed in a flying collision with a dog leash on the 101 (long story, but suffice to say Del Mar residents who walk dogs in the bike lane at 10 PM at night have a special place in hell). Never got a good vibe from the people here. One dude in particular was accusatory- every time he was in the shop and I was taking my bike in for maintenance, he'd come over and demand to know what I had done to screw my bike up. Seriously? Others tried to be funny and failed miserably. I know bike shops can be rather strange places, but this was just weird. They also rarely were able to do maintenance immediately, which I've found isn't always the norm elsewhere. Rather expensive parts and service. I started calling around after the first few incidents and found some places that were cheaper, but not nearly as convenient. Great location and a few members of the staff (Dennis in particular) were very helpful, but in general I'd think twice about making this a regular store. We'll see if my new place proves to be better or worse. read more

I was surprised to see so many 1 and 2 star reviews, so before I share my experience, allow me to preface with a few disclaimers to manage your expectations before you visit: - UCC only carries Specialized bicycles and parts, so if you are trying to compare, look a bit online before heading to the store. - Specialized is a high end brand, so if you are looking for something simple or for a novice, go to Target or Sports Chalet - Visit UCC when you have time, they are often busy because they carry legit products and have great service. They'll give you great service too, it might just take a few minutes. - Ask for Edwin (Sales) or Steve (Mechanic), they are by far my favorite people in the store due to their knowledge, friendliness and expertise My boyfriend and I decided that road biking was going to be our next hobby. So we headed to UCC to start examining different bikes. I was immediately impressed at the selection they have for women's bikes (other stores I visited had only one or two models and everything else was online). Edwin spent 3 hours with us testing different bikes, listening to our likes and dislikes and matching us up with the best options that fit our per-determined price range. We literally closed the store down, and not one person was grumpy about it. We had to order a couple of pieces so came back one week later for our fitting. Edwin called me personally to let me know that he wouldn't be able to be there with us due to an unforeseen obligation. He made sure the rest of the staff was ready to expect us and would take care of our fitting. The next day we arrived and spent an additional 4 hours with Steve, who acutely listened to all of our preferences and made sure that the bikes fit our bodies like gloves. Again, closed down the store, and everyone was cool about it. We've been in and out of the store a few times since, adjusting this or that, or buying an extra tube, and they are always quick to greet us, help us and take care of anything we need. Granted, the store can be busy and it may take a minute, but only because they want each person to be taken care of. I was having trouble with the road bike clips I started with, and without hesitation Edwin helped me find a pair that was much more flexible, Steve had them installed in no time and now my excitement and confidence to ride has been restored. If you want to get into riding, ride already or are a pro, UCC will either have what you are looking for or will get it for you. Edwin and Steve have won my loyalty, and I'll visit UCC for as long as I have cycling needs. read more

I went in there, despite the bad reviews, because it's close from where I live and I thought to give them a chance. There place where I bought the bike is pretty far from where I live now. I brought my bike for a minor tune up: $75. First strike. I had to wait 5 days for the tune up. Second strike. I brought my bicycle there mainly because the disc was touching the disk break and slowing the wheel spin. I told them at least 3 times about that issue. When I showed up the issue was still there. They told me "It's gonna fix by itself" and "You need to have it checked by a professional mechanic". Seriously? What are you unprofessional?. After that they tried to fixing it by bending the disc with tongs. Strike out! I had a bad experience, the staff was a bit rude (not too much), too expensive and too slow, problems not fixed and not professional . Next time I will spend the extra time and gas to go to a better place. read more

Purchased a Specialized Creo SL yesterday. Dealt with David in sales and while pleasant enough was not very informative about the bike. I asked him for the maximum tire spec four times before finally getting an answer. While he mentioned down loading the app, Mission Control he failed to speak to having to remove the control section to obtain the code for pairing the bike to the application. Spending $6,450 ought to get a lot more attention and support to the customer. read more

My buying experience was great; the staff was knowledgeable in their products and in the end I got a bike that fits my riding needs (cross-country) and my budget. However, this review is for the poor experience I received from trying to obtain warranty service. I had a broken nipple in my front wheel, and the bike and the components are still under warrant. This should be a straight forward warranty repair. Instead, before anyone even looked at the wheel, one guy started making comments about how this must be corrosion caused by washing my bike with tap water. In their words, tap water in San Diego is too hard that it makes the bikes deteriorate. So I asked, what am I supposed to wash my bike with? This guy then said "you are not supposed to wash your bike." Well, ladies and gentleman, water filtration is state-regulated, so all tap water in California meets the exact same standard. In addition, water in San Diego comes from San Francisco region and the Colorado River. But this is beside the point. Not washing your bike is just downright ridiculous. I then said that unless Specialized states that you are not supposed to wash my bike with tap water in San Diego, I'm going to wash my bike. If components break within the warranty period, they should cover it, and I should not have to pay for it. Eventually, this other technician Al came over and said that they will make a claim with Specialized to see if it'll be covered by warranty. All in all, the reason for the one-star rating is for their poor customer interaction. Blaming the problem on the customer is just a very cheap tactic and honestly should never happen. What's the point of warranty if customers are always at fault? read more

Similar to an over-priced, unscrupulous car mechanic. Four years ago my friends chipped in to buy me a $600 hybrid bike from this place for my birthday. I use my bike to commute and surf and I love it. My problem with the store is that every time I come in they tell me that I need some expensive repair or try to pressure me into buying some expensive new thing for my bike. The following is the most glaring example: for the last year or so they have been telling me that "your drive train (gears and chain) is completely shot, it will cost about $250 in parts and labor to replace." However, my bike rides fine; the only thing that happens is that the chain occasionally skips while I'm going up a very steep hill. It is hardly noticeable. On a friend's recommendation I walked into California Bicycle in La Jolla and asked about the problem. They told me that they could replace my drive chain for $150 in parts and labor, about $100 less than UC. Furthermore, even though I was ready to do it, they told me that I didn't need the replacement. They explained that I could just spray some lube on the chain and ride the bike till it became a noticeable problem. Seeing the honest, straight forward and low pressure service at California Bicycle showed me how ridiculous UC Cyclery is by comparison. read more

I like this place. There is a certain sense of sell sell sell to it, which I am not a huge fan of, but the sales force seems to be very knowledgable and tend not (in my experience) to give poor advice. I have bought a few products from them, and have never felt pressured nor ignored. When I was just a novice at biking, they even took time to explain a lot of stuff to me. A plus is the San Diego Bike Club rides from here every Saturday. I have not done the ride, but I hear GREAT things about it, especially for those just getting into the sport. Overall, this is a good store for Road bikes ... and since I do not Mountain bike I cannot comment on that. read more

It's a nice shop with lots of gear & a riding club. HOWEVER, I'm not impressed with their "nickel & dime" approach. I walked in with my bike to window shop & the associate immediately began criticizing my gear & telling me what I needed to upgrade. I thought he was just playing around, but he wasn't... He made fun of my bottle cages. Whatever... But then I went in with a mechanical issue. I wasn't sure what was wrong & asked one of the mechanics a few questions. I wasn't working on another project & I didn't interrupt him, but he wasn't going to engage my bike without charging me. Honestly, he was a creep. I said "thanks" & left. I want this shop to succeed, but they are their own worse enemies. Take care of your customers, they pay your bills, guys. read more

Very nice and friendly people. The pedal of my bicycle fell off, so I came here to get it fixed. I bought my bike for $50 and was scared that I would end up paying more than I bought it for. The people here were really nice though. I told them my situation and they said to just bring the bike in for an estimate. It only cost me $18! Yay! Came in as a novice and left with a great bike at a good price. They have always helped me out when I have questions or repairs. One time I crashed in the intersection next to the store (I was fine, the bike was not) and they repaired my bike for free. The staff takes pity on bloody and bruised customers! I ride my bike to work and home every day, it is my transportation and when I took it into this shop for routine maintenance I was not prepared for the following days and weeks ride to and from work when I was unable to shift into the lowest gear for 3 to 4 minutes after I shifted. I expect that wen someone works on my primary transportation that they send it out of the shop in better riding condition then when I brought it in. They also indicated that I should probably change the chain, this seemed like they were padding the repair with an extra sell as the bile is all of 1 year old. the bike also had full air in the tires as I use the mountain bike(Diamond Back 29'er) on surface streets. it is a sturdy bike and the tires inflated to 60psi was my request but when I got it home they were at 30 ps. Were they even paying attention to the needs of the bike? They told me that I can bring the bike back for correction of the issues that I indicated but then Why should I return the bike back for a 6 hour visit that turns into a 8 hour period of time. in my view this is not the kind of customer service that I have come to expect of professionals who enjoy their work and their field of choice. Will I return to this shop for maintenance in the future, likely not as this first visit was not worth the cost of service provided compared to the value received. My thanks for your effort but there will not be repeat visits to your shop. which is a shame as you are 2 minutes from my home and convenience. If I could offer a recommendation, it would be add quality to services rendered, increase quality controls ensuring that the product actually leaves without having the need for returned visits unless the client actually wants to come and make a purchase. read more

Regardless of whether one is a never-ever cyclist just learning about bikes or a seasoned enthusiast, this locally owned shop is the first and last stop for bikes in San Diego. The first thing you notice about the crew here, both on the sales floor or back in the mechanic shop is that all of them are veteran cyclists who have been in the industry for quite sometime and not kids who are fresh out of school working a side-job. No sales pressure! The staff of Dave, Dennis and Abe are friendly, all too open to letting one poke around the shop and readily available to answer any and all questions. They're patient and understand that you're going to try out bikes not just in their shop but probably many others as well, relying on their outstanding customer service to seal the deal. They support the San Diego Bicycle Club and provide all sorts of refreshments, snacks and facilities for riders every Saturday. Plus club members get a 10% discount on bikes and merchandise in the store. The mechanics are outstanding. They have higher labor costs than some other shops but the value is great because they identify and fix any issues and stand behind their work. After my wife's bike had shifting problems, they went to work on it and ended up warrantying out the cassette and installed a new one. Problem solved and headache gone! They stand behind the products they sell. I bought a pair of Pearl iZumi shorts with my entry-level road bike, and despite there being cheaper options at discount shops or on the internet, when the seams ripped after just a couple of rides, they immediately took them back and replaced them. No hassles, no questions, just an apology for my experience and best wishes for good riding. It's not easy finding a locally owned business that works hard to earn and nurture the loyalty of its customers but UC Cyclery has done it and done it well. From the initial investment they make in their customers by spending time and guiding you through the bike buying process to the continued after-sales support with free life-time tune ups, plus their outreach to the general cycling community with their sponsorship of the San Diego Bicycle Club, this store is a terrific resource and deserves a visit. read more

I recently bought an entry level mountain bike from a different shop (I'll upgrade to a Specialized or another high end brand in a year or so). I decided to ride over and support this independent shop by buying some accessories. The staff was friendly and helpful. I picked out a Kryptonite lock that I know was much cheaper at Amazon, but again I wanted to support a small shop and get the personalized service so was willing to pay a premium. I asked if they could install it for me (the shop was not busy). The staff member said that they now charge for this but it's easy to install. Well, he is right- it is an easy thing. I just figured that if I'm paying a 33%+ premium that I could get something like some personalized service and 3 minutes of an otherwise idle staff member's time to help me out to justify this. Other indy bike shops would have no problem doing so if they were not busy. So, I decided to only by the lock and not lights, and air pump, etc. In the future I will go to one of the other indy bike shops in San Diego when I want that personal service and probably when I upgrade to a "real" bike. read more

This is the only bike shop in the UCSD/UTC area, so it was the first place I looked to get my wheels sorted out after a crash. They usually have a decently long waitlist as well, so you might be looking at a week or more. UCC is also the closest Spinergy dealer, so I had to go to them to get spokes. I realize that the PBO spokes are a bit harder to true than your average Sapim, but I still expected them to at least properly tension the wheel. Really felt like they just rushed it so they could continue selling overpriced Specialized gear. UCC basically only sells Specialized bikes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is that they pretty much have no clue what to do with certain other major brands. I had brought them my Cannonade SuperSix on a headset issue and they told me my frame was rounded and I should but a new frame. Charged me 10 bucks to tell me that when I didnt immediately buy one. Not wanting to drop another few thousand on a frame, I ended up getting a second opinion at Nytro up in Encinitas. Only to discover I was missing a headset centering piece. I'm going to be nice though and chalk this up to incompetence rather than outright shadiness to get a sale. Most decent bike shops are expensive, but at least their service is terrific. Check out B&L's Solano Beach branch (Specialized) or Nytro (Cannondale) in Encinitas. Great guys there who take good care if their customers and do pretty good bike fittings as well. To any UCSD students out there looking for a decent first bike, go to the UCSD bike shop at the old student services center. Contrary to what some may think, they sell upper end bikes too (Orbea Orca, Opal, Aqua) and are a lot more convenient if you run into problems. No reason to overpay at UCC for an Allez or Roubaix. Fitters aren't as good as a full time shop, but more than good enough for someone just getting into cycling. Only perk is that they give free bananas to the Saturday morning SDBC rides that start here. read more

This is the best bike shop in San Diego county - and I've tried many, many of them over 20 years of cycling here. My husband and I moved to Escondido from Sorrento Valley where UC Cyclery had been our shop of choice. We are avid cyclists who ride ~150 miles/week, so a great shop is a must. When we moved to Esco we wanted to support the local shops there but they didn't even come close to UCC in terms of customer service. We now either bike or drive to UCC in La Jolla from Escondido for everything "bike". You know a bike shop is great when: 1. The owner is almost always present and goes out of his way to help you. 2. The staff is the same year after year so they get to know you and your needs (plus it means the owner is paying and treating his staff well). 3. They open their shop early on Saturday morning to accommodate a local bike club - and provide free energy drink, bananas, coffee. 4. On Saturday morning (before 8:45) when literally dozens of cyclists descend on the store they go out of their way to make sure each and every one gets what they need if it's at all possible. 5. The store is stocked with every supply we have ever needed. UPDATE: 6. There is no "attitude" at this shop - meaning they happily work with any type of cyclist. You don't have to be a racer to be treated well. read more

So I've been on the hunt for the perfect hard tail the last few weeks. I live in Point Loma and wanted to support my local bike shop which is Moment Bicycles. Moment only has about 12 bikes (no joke) but they had the specialized pitch in my size a few weeks back so I went in with my buddy yesterday and they had sold it...not a problem I figured I could just order it and pick it up in a few days. The sales rep was a complete joke he showed no interest to me or my buddy when we walked in and when I asked if he could order the bike they had a few weeks back he tried to up sell me on a bike that cost 3 times as much. Long story short he was a tool and pretty much said he could order it but its a waste of his time, oh and he wanted me to pay for half the bike up front just to transfer one to there location. I left there feeling pretty discouraged and really started looking for a new bike shop. Now we can get to the review. I came across UCC online and they seemed to have a pretty good selection so I figured I'd give them a shot. Let me tell you UCC is ,y new favorite bike shop in all San Diego! Daniel was the sales rep who helped me the second I walked in and he couldn't have been nicer or more professional. I saw my specialized Pitch in a color i didn't even know it came in and I knew the second I saw it I was sold. Daniel answered all my questions and made me feel confident in my purchase. They have lifetime tune ups when you buy from them and they don't sit there and push bikes 3 times the price of what you're looking for. I couldn't be happier with my purchase or the buying experience! If you're looking for a good quality bike you need to check this place out. They have every model of specialized and Santa Cruz you can imagine and all the sales reps there are knowledgeable and you can trust what they're telling you. This shop has a good selection but the prices and attitudes of the staff are terrible. I've given them a few tries when i've been stuck and needed a bike part right away, but have never had a good experience. Always over-priced, usually pretty rude. My guess is they are used to dealing with students who move on after a year or two, so they are all about the quick buck, not about repeat business. Free tune ups for life? Yeah, of course, your customers usually move away in 2 years. There are bike shops that work much harder for your business in San Diego so can't find any reason to support these guys until they shape up. read more

UC Cyclery is a good all around bike shop. With a wide selection of nutrition products for endurance athletes, a decent variety of cycling gear, and plenty of SRAM and Shimano products, the people at UC Cyclery are friendly and willing to help. For those in the market for a new bike, the shop offers free lifetime tune-ups if you buy a bike from them. If the shop has any weak points, it is that they exclusively sell Specialized brand bicycles, and only Specialized brand bicycles. Not that there is anything wrong with this particular brand, but given the fact that the shop offers free lifetime tune-ups, having the option of other bicycle manufactures would be really nice. As far as competitive prices go, UC Cyclery is slightly more expensive than Performance or Bicycle Warehouse, but their customer service is what keeps customers coming back. Their floor salesmen don't work on commission, and have a laid back approach to sales. The guys who build and service the bikes are incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and willing to answer any question, no matter how complex or basic. Steve is the man, and Cisco is a comedian. I strongly recommend UC Cyclery to anyone in the market for a new bike, and to those who require expert technicians to get the job done. read more

This place is a great place for road or mountain bikes, or something in between (like a cruiser or hybrid, but no BMX or specialty bikes). Very convenient location and reasonable prices (especially considering their location). I was in here A LOT to collect parts and information for a bike project I was working on. They thought I was crazy and we made some mistakes, but they were honest and always dealt with me fairly and in good humor. I didn't buy my bike there (probably a mistake), but I spent over $400 in parts for one there. I got quick service and they were very patient with me. I will definitely shop here again for my bicycle needs in Southern California. The only downsides I can say is that they didn't have my size in most bikes, although to their credit many companies have stopped making bikes in 14" (47cm) frames. I hate those companies. Also, if you are buying parts they seems to focus on low-end "good enough for student bikes" parts and high-end "I pretend to be a pro cyclist every weekend" parts but have very little variety in "I'm a bike enthusiast on a budget" parts. Maybe that's a narrow group in their area, but it makes them less awesome compared to other stores nationwide. read more

Admittedly, it was a small repair but after calling a few shops and getting ridiculous turnaround times on fixing a broken spoke, I took my wheel in on a Friday night around 7pm and they fixed it on the spot. Well, after starting the repair, they pointed out that in fact the rim was cracked as well. Fortunately, they had a replacement on hand and I was able to leave with a wheel so I could ride the next day. Typically, I like to research things like wheel purchases prior to buying but was pleased to find they gave me good advice and fair pricing when doing some research after the fact. I've been to a number of SDBC Sat rides that start at this location, and always appreciated the hospitality, but this was the first time doing business with them. To give you an idea of how much I dislike this place, I live 5 blocks away from it and I ride my bike all the way to south park to get the service I deserve. The first time I came in I was greeted by the evil eye for my NON-Specialized bicycle, and a quite distasteful "You want something?" I needed some handlebar tape and I told the mechanic so and he just pointed. After finding the one I liked the clerk at the front asked if i wanted them to wrap it for me, being lazy, I of course said yes. The service charge ended up being more than the friggin tape! My next visit was for an emergency change of tire which was actually not that bad until I was once again charged an exorbitant amount of money for just the service. This time I asked why and he said "All of your parts were loose so I tightened them." I was glad he did but what if i didn't have the money for his little tune up? What would of happened then? He should of asked first, and not taken the liberty of just doing what he pleased on my bike. If he told me, I would of done it with my tools at home and not paid 30 bucks to tighten some bolts. My third visit was just for some toe clips and they said if I wanted them installed it would be $15.00, I said no thank you and put the two screws in outside the shop. My final conclusion is that unless you have a Specialized and money to drop, DO NOT EVER COME HERE! EDIT: this is definitely geared (no pun intended) towards the mechanics, the sales staff (abe and the guy who rides a fixed mountain bike) is very knowledgeable and courteous if you like Specialized definitely give them a try. read more

Edwin was a great source for an honest opinion and advice. We came in to replace my son's bike that was locked and stolen from bike storage. He knows the UCSD campus and surrounding area and gave us good bike recommendations and told us how to lock the bike for maximum security. My son LOVES his new bike even more than the one that was stolen (and he really enjoyed that one!). He was so excited to have a cycle shop near campus that offers free tune-ups. Another plus is UCC is going to help him find the brackets he needs to remount the lights he luckily took off before the first bike was stolen. Great shop and customer service!!! Paid $80 for 2 new tires for my mountain bike and had a flat tire before I got out of the car back home. When I called the store that same day was told they had only replaced 1 inner tube (but couldn't tell me which one) so they weren't responsible for the flat. Seriously? $80 and I have a flat tire before the bike was even ridden. Being busy is one thing, but don't take on more work than you can get done right and if you get it wrong own it and fix it. read more
