I live in Carlsbad, so this shop is kind of far for me to go. But it's worth it. They are one of the best bike shops I have ever dealt with. I bought a bike today, and every employee that I dealt with was smart, helpful, and attentive. While I was there I watched other customers and their interactions. All good. I moved to San Diego County after 40 years in Palo Alto and was a customer of the legendary Palo Alto Bicycles and Wheelsmith stores. Now that I'm older I don't buy as many bikes or put as many miles on them as I once did, but I know a great bike store when I see one, and UC Cyclery is a great bike store. read more

Being an cycling addict reminiscing of the good old days... let's start with inventory it's all high end and curated to the ride. To be honest most of the components I would have handpicked myself. Nothing is invincible at a certain point but hands down fox factory lasts for years. The shop utilizes a compact showroom design with a space off the side for mechanics. Despite the compact showroom they have everything from high end mountain bikes to high end road/gravel bikes to high end e-bikes(mtb/road/comfort & hybrid). Bikes for all ages, sizes and riders! They have high quality apparel and protectives as well as decent discount on some inventory too. Nutrition and maintenance needs. The shop staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. By the engagement and tidiness of the shop, I can tell they have a deep understanding of rider needs and the equipment associated with cycling, competitive and recreational. Being a busy shop I'd expect turnaround times to be fair/moderate on repairs/upgrade/maintenance. I didn't take too much of a look at the service board but I would expect price point is going to be higher, from the shop overhead/location, but judging from the mix of bikes/gear and the knowledge/experience of the employees, I'd say that the mechanics side would meet or exceed my standards (which are pretty high) when it comes to care and attention to detail. Had the opportunity to talk shortly with the owner Dave, he is humble and very personable, a good guy with years of experience in the sport, notices how the small things play a big role in the ride. I've been to UC Cyclery multiple times over the years to just grab some small stuff. A couple of months ago, I actually bought my first bike from them and it was an awesome experience. Trevor is extremely knowledgeable, very friendly and has a great sense of humor. He was super helpful in making my purchase a pleasant experience. I needed lots of parts swapped out and upgraded on the bike, because as I am nearly 50 years old, I am still trying to get that Pro Cycling Contract and I want to save every gram that I can. Fernando / Francisco assembled and installed all the new parts perfectly and the bike was ready on the date it was promised. A few weeks later I went back and bought another bike. The sale price was too good to pass up and again, I needed some minor upgrades installed and they hooked it up for me again. Just an excellent experience. I've had a chance to speak with two of their mechanics (Rick and Eliseo) and they were both soooo nice and helpful, despite clearly being very busy. The two girls that are always there are also very nice, super cute, fun to chat with and very friendly. I'm now in the process of buying my third bike from UC Cyclery in just as many months and I've had a chance to speak and work with Dave the owner and he has been really great and beyond fair and reasonable. The service guys added my tubeless Conti5000 tires on my Ksyrium rims which were an extremely tight fit. They did a great job and we recommended a better sealant other than Stan's which I use on my mountain bikes. I recently decided to upgrade my old Marin mountain bike and was looking to swap it out with a Specialized Stumpjumper. I first went to Specialized in La Costa. The staff at Specialized was condescending and unhelpful. I decided to try UC Cyclery (even though they were farther from where I live) because I'd heard great things about the shop. My experience at UC Cyclery was night and day from my experience at Specialized. Lorenza helped me out and gave me a detailed rundown on different models I should consider based on the type of riding I was looking to do. I was able to test ride a few of the bikes down the road. My new bike was delivered last night and in the morning I had a small issue with how the bike shifted. When I called the shop the person answering the phone was super helpful and said he would relay the message to Dave. I've been a fan of UC Cyclery since my first visit but my most recent experience warrants an update of my previous review. I have an older Specialized Roubaix and was thinking about updating my cassette... little did I know I was going to come away with a completely new bike. I was helped by Vince G. who is very knowledgeable about bikes. We talked about a new cassette but that there were other components I would need to think about upgrading as well. All in all, when I looked at the cost of upgrading my bike, it did make sense to buy a new one. But after we started talking about a new bike, I started learning about all the new changes that have happened since I bought my bike more than a decade ago. It was a major expense I was not planning for... but on the other hand, this year I've clocked more miles than I've ever rode in my life and really love biking so it made sense to get the new bike and get something that also will last another 10 - 20 years. Vince was very helpful in explaining the differences between some of the bikes since I wasn't familiar with a lot of the new technology. Also, bikes seem to be in high demand so I was happy when Vince told me the bike I wanted was in stock at the manufacturer and it would arrive in a few weeks. When the bike finally arrived, I was elated but then found out it was going to be a bit longer before I could ride it as there were people ahead of me waiting to have their bikes assembled also. I talked to Vince and he could sense my disappointment, especially since I had initially gone in to buy a new cassette and ended up getting a new bike, one of the top of the line bikes. Knowing all the money I had just spent, Vince worked with the team at UC Cyclery and they worked extra and managed to get me my new bike in just a few days. When I took delivery, Vince made sure it was fitted for me and help me learn the new electronic shifting controls and more. I am so grateful for the new bike and although it's an expense I wasn't planning for, I'm happy I made the choice. But I really want to thank Vince and all of his work explaining all the different bikes and options to help me make my choice but mostly for helping to get my bike assembled and ready for delivery as soon as possible. I know he bent over backwards to help me and hope he will be rewarded for taking such good care of me. Thanks again for everything and I highly recommend this store for all of your biking needs. My bicycle needed an easy tune-up and UC Cyclery is walking distance to my house, so I went here without any research on other options. For $40 they changed my brake pads, tuned up the gears, and did an overall tune up of my bike. My boyfriend thought that was a bit pricey for how easy the job was, but honestly, for convenience of walking there and the fact that they had an appointment the next day, I was fine with it. Also, this has nothing to do with bikes, but we walked there with the pups and they are super dog friendly, going out of their way to tell my boyfriend to come in with them and doting all over them. Any place that enjoys dogs is A-OK in my book! The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because when I came to pick up my bike, I stood there for a very very long time without any acknowledgement. They have a sign in the door saying to please wait until you're asked to enter due to COVID-19, which I did. Multiple employees walked by, but didn't say a word. Not even to tell me that someone would be with me at some points. I finally gave up and just walked in back to the maintenance section myself. It doesn't feel good to be ignored guys. read more

I wanted a ceramicspeed bottom bracket for my bike and even though they had it in stock Rudy told me he wouldn't sell it to me. The only way I could purchase the thing was if I had them install it. He muttered something about special spacers needing to be ordered for my bike's Q factor. He was lying. It wasn't even a press fit BB. Just your old fashioned BSA. I installed it myself a few days ago and got the nicer version for the same price as the one they had. Plus I saved $75 in labor for something that took minutes. I might not be a bike mechanic but I do know a few things. I know I won't ever give these guys my business again and I know you can't trust Rudy over there. read more

My bike's pump fell apart on me and after an hour of struggling to get any air, we decided to check out this bike shop. Upon entering we were greeted promptly by staff members and asked what was wrong. Staff member troubleshot the bike to make sure the issue was indeed the pump and not the tube or my wheel. Few moments later, I was given a wide selection of pumps and $100 later I walked out happily with pumped tires and two new pumps. Dropped off my Cannondale for repairs, broken rim, ruined drivetrain, handlebar tape falling off, hoods falling off. Everything was wrong with this bike. So bad that I had given up hope it would ever be something I wanted to ride again and was just planning to repair it and sell. My experiences with other mechanics was also bad in the area (except Bernies!). I'd even already bought a new bike! Instead of my usual disappointment after getting my bike back from mechanic. They smashed all expectations, had the bike done right away, also fixed an issue with my brakes that was occurring since I bought it from store. It's never ridden better, was flying! The mechanics and sales staff are all so friendly and you can just tell everyone loves riding as much as you do! :) read more

The staff here at UC Cyclery is top notch. I've recently fallen in love with spinning so friend and I stopped by here to take a look at their spin shoes. He's a fan of bikes so this store was heaven to him. The store isn't huge but it's a good enough size to stock a variety of bikes. Matt, one of the sales guy, was helpful without being pretentious. He didn't try to convince us to buy a single thing. He answered all our questions with ease and a smile. They don't have many spin shoes. Their most affordable pair was $100. Matt let me try on a few pairs and also explained that I would need to buy cleats separately. He also told me I would need to find out what type of cleats my spin classes uses in order to purchase the right ones. It felt great not to be pressured to buy a product I wasn't very sure about. I appreciated Matt's honesty and help that day. I ended up finding a more affordable pair online. The sole also had rubber so it makes for easier walking. I called UC Cyclery to ask if they could help me install the cleats as I had no clue. They said it would be a few bucks and to come on in. Rodger, I think that was the guy's name, was beyond cool. He looked at my shoes and said he'd do it for free as it would be pretty quick. He let me watch and even install one cleat to teach me. Who does that. UC Cyclery and the wonderful staff here. Just upgraded to a new bike and had a great experience. Guys on the sales floor weren't pushy and were helpful. Bike arrived in the estimated timeframe and I came late on a Saturday to pick it up. I intended to be in and out and just set it up at home because it was so close to closing time but Rudy stayed after close to help me properly adjust the suspension. Update: Handlebar grips were not tightened down either. I carry a full repair kit on the trail and was able to tighten them down. Furthermore, brakes were still super squishy when I got my bike back again after they "fixed the issue". Took my bike to Holland's Bikes in Coronado to actually do the job. Highly advise you go there instead if you are going with a Specialized bike (they are a certified Specialized retailer as well). Immediately was given reasonable service timelines, what their service would include, price, and advice for break-in period for the bike at Holland's. read more

I have had my Specialized Crosstrail for a few months now and thought it was time for a review. I'm going to compare it to my last bike a 10 year old GT Force road bike. I'll start with the ride. The Specialized is much better for my commute as there are lots of potholes and ruts in the road. The bigger tires and the front shock really help smooth out defects in the road. Having the lockout on the front shock is really helpful going uphill when I am really grinding down on the crank. The GT is a bit faster overall though as it is about 8 pounds lighter. The quality and technological advances of the components on the Specialized is really impressive. The disc brakes front and back making stopping easy while on the GT I'm worried I might skid into the intersection on steep hills. The 2x10 gearing on the Specialized result in a much wider easier to use range of gears. The 3x7 gearing on the GT made it hard to find the right gear and most of them were never used. In conclusion I am really impressed by how bike technology has advanced in 10 years. The Specialized Crosstrail stops really well, goes over rough roads really well, and everything works smoothly and precisely. It feels incredibly smooth and efficient when you pedal and feel the bike accelerate. This is the best bike I have ever had. The only downsides are the Specialized cost twice as much as the GT and now I have to be careful where I lock it up. read more
