I signed onto Uber about a year ago and never used the service. I have spent No money with them and never will. I receive daily spam advertisements from their various sidelines and there is no option for opting out. I have attempted to cancel the account but the method for deleting the account is fictitious, cleverly concealed or totally absent. There ae no direct contact e-mail addresses, no telephone numbers. The online links from Uber to customer care are useless and one prominent one shifts you to a service that wants a subscription and money. I had barely even heard of Uber before my trip in Austin. A yelp friend from the Austin area recommended checking them out. So when I needed a ride downtown I thought why not. I ended up using them three times. First I had to download the app, which I did. Then I had to set up my location for pick up which for some reason ended up being a real pain in the butt. I was at a hotel where the front desk staff was familiar with Uber even though it was a new service to Austin. He helped me for easily over a half hour and finally got it set up. However, once we had set it up I had issue with the first ride FREE promo code and did not get it. This was possibly my fault, but frustrating. My best experience was with the first driver overall. I explained the issue with the promo code and he gave me info to contact Uber and said it would most likely be taken care of and a credit applied. The car was much nicer than I expected. A mid size car, clean, driver clean spoke English clearly and was very friendly. I was driven directly to where I needed to go without a hitch. From what the driver said is they are independent contractors of sorts, so no tipping. Second experience was worse than first. I needed a ride at 2:30 AM from downtown and used my app and was given an option for surge pricing which I accepted. The driver arrived super quick while others waiting for a taxi could not find one. The SUV was newer and clean and driver spoke English. So this was excellent to have this kind of speed. I think it was around 4x the going rate due to "Surge Pricing". Not a good feeling to be charged $90 for a ride back to the hotel when the same ride earlier in the even was $23. Driver was quiet, so biggie as I was quite tired from being out with a few drinks for the night on 6th street. My third experience and worse was from the hotel to University of Texas. The driver arrived at the hotel within a reasonable time.The was by far the most underwhelming car, a older compact, but clean and driver spoke English. The young man was nice enough and I get along with just about anyone. The driver said he was not exactly familiar with the area at UT that I was going to. The exact location was the Blanton Museum. I had never been there, had no idea what the building even looked like. The driver unfortunately had his GPS taking us all over the area, but not locating the museum. After approximately a 20 min delay and asking a few people nearby it was found. I already had a tight schedule with flying out and was not to happy. What elevated this review to some degree was Uber corporate who reached out and took care of the first ride very quickly and reminded me that the promo code should always be put in first, like duh I knew that but the stupid app seemed to be impossible to figure out. The second contact with Uber corporate was off the survey of the driver. After every trip you rate the driver and can provide comments. Believe me, on the last driver I can comments. They refunded something like around $10 off the fare and could somehow tell he drove farther than he should have. The two positive occurrences with Uber made me think they care and want to satisfy the customer. Uber in Austin is newer, within it's first 6 months possibly. The company is even somewhat newer being founded in 2009 in San Francisco, CA. So I get that some kinks need to be worked out in one of there new cities. The first driver who was more talkative had great things to say about Uber as a company which made me feel good. I would try them again and hope to have better overall experiences. Due to the chaos with the last driver finding my location a three is very fair. However, I balance this out with HQ assisting me twice. I would recommend others give it a try, most likely you will save money over a traditional taxi service. But always keep in mind when you are notified of the "Surge Pricing" is means multipler and you will pay through the nose. read more

I only went 6.45 miles on Uber, Google Maps says 4.8 miles, and was charged a whopping $36.95. Took the same trip home with Lyft and only paid $19.74, a $17.21 difference. Uber's app shows wrong location when picking me at my address and most of their drivers in my area don't speak enough English to understand simple directions when I text direction to my address. I have emailed Uber with my address problem for a year and they don't care enough to make the correction and is just as irritating many of their drivers don't speak enough English to understand simple directions over the phone or when I text them. I scheduled a ride more than 24 hours in advance for an early ride to the airport. Everything seemed ok. I got an email showing my scheduled ride, I got a text, and the app gave me a countdown by the minute until my scheduled pick up. Uber is infamous for their 'surge pricing' that takes place in Austin during the big events, like SXSW or ACL. Drivers flock from across the state during these events to take advantage of huge fares for short distances. Don't expect Uber to address your concerns afterwords if there's a problem. Uber is always going up against the State of Texas and the City of Austin over concessions relating to the background checks of the drivers, and how carefully they're vetted before being allowed to roam the streets in search of fares. Somehow, Austin is creating their own ride sharing program, and prohibiting municipalities from regulating the service on their own. I always prefer Uber to a taxi cab- I like the fact that I can see who's picking me up in what, and a fair estimate of the fare. However, the $5 ride cancellation fee is a stupid policy, and I got burned by it just messing with my phone trying to get a fare estimate. read more

Never Again!! I ordered a McDonald's meal delivery from Uber Eats and not only did they deliver the meal late,they delivered the wrong meal! Plus the delivery address on the email receipt was not even mine! They refused to contact me back after numerous contact attempts to either have the meal redelivered or receive a refund. Uber loses hundreds of millions a quarter/year. Uber admitted two years ago that they withheld all tip monies that passengers/riders left for the drivers over several years, because the drivers were not technically employees. Well now, Uber matches tips passengers leave for the drivers, to take drivers away from Ride Austin and Lyft. Uber has not paid back, the withheld millions of dollars in tips to several thousands of drivers, or indicated that they would. Nothing wrong with the Driver, just the process. Driver arrives after 6 min wait. The app didn't ask for where we were headed. He could not change the location which he had as the location where we were picked us up from. Told me to cancel the ride so he could put in our destination, from my phone. Did that. New driver picked it up, now we have to get out of the car and wait again...he can't take us. No way to override the process once it's in. Btw This happened after Lyft driver canceled on us before he got to us...cause he said we were too far away, though the app said he was 6 mins from us. So I paid for the uber driver, full cost. My friend paid for the Lyft driver because he wouldn't come get us (at the emergency room downtown austin by the way) And we still have no ride. Just called the regular cab service. TL;DR - Uber just came to Austin and their navigation sucks and don't allow their drivers to use google maps so prepare to be perpetually lost. Uber just came to Austin, so I decided to use it yesterday to get to work and scheduled my ride the night beforehand. The morning of, my scheduled driver canceled on me so I ordered another ride. The same driver accepted my ride and canceled on my THREE TIMES IN TOTAL.He didn't try and call me and he didn't even text me. Today I realized why that might have happened. Again, I ordered an UberPool to work and the second rider in the car was very hard to find because the location was off. I thought this was an anomaly, but Uber managed to mess up the location of my work place which is VERY EASY TO FIND since it is right off the highway. This caused me to arrive at my destination 20 minutes later than expected and late to my meeting. read more

This morning, Uber gave me a ride from the airport to downtown Austin. Initially, when I was picked up, Aziz, the Uber driver, got out of the vehicle to put my luggage in the trunk. When I arrived at my destination, I stepped out of the vehicle and walked 10 feet before I realized my luggage was in the trunk. At the same time, Aziz, got out of the vehicle to retrieve the luggage. I thanked him, went into the App and gave him a 5 star rating with a 20% tip. Three hours later, I receive an email stating my bill has been upgraded to an additional $15 for a lost item return fee. The vehicle never moved from its spot where I was dropped off. Nor, did I lose an item, report losing an item, or need the driver to return to my drop off for any reason. Aziz filed a fraudulent report. I contacted Uber and explained the situation. They are refusing to reimburse my $15. It's unfortunate that Uber is willing to lose a loyal customer, who generates hundreds of dollars a year due to business travel, over $15. They adjusted my fee the next morning and claimed "the driver let us know that there was an issue that prevented this trip from being timed [properly]" and they added on charges to reflect that. I started noticing UBER drivers were taking side roads with stoplights to avoid the TOLLS that I pay for in my fee. I have asked them BEFORE getting in the car to confirm they take the toll roads. An Uber driver drove onto a just opened emergency lane Monday morning past a security vehicle with it's emergency lights flashing onto a walkway reserved for pedestrians and emergency service vehicles only. When the driver dropped off his two passenger employees at this major high tech company he was asked politely to leave the emergency lane due to emergency services being en route. Rather than comply the self-entitled Uber driver decided to argue with security that Google Maps gave him the authority to use and block emergency services with his vehicle. The argumentative driver had to be told 3 times to leave the emergency lane which he blocked for 5 minutes rather than move his vehicle. The Uber driver then filed a complaint with the company about how he had been wronged by arguing with security and blocking the emergency lane. When attempts were made to file a complaint for the Uber driver's behavior no Uber numbers reached a human being. When a complaint was made using the only means available via Twitter a representative simply wrote, "Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We appreciate being informed about these types of situations so that we can follow up with the appropriate actions. If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to reach back out to us." The company refused to do any investigation about their driver disrupting an emergency. There is no personal accountability and a top down attitude of self-entitlement at Uber from their recently fired CEO to their unprofessional drivers. I will never use or recommend Uber to anyone. Any other "professional chauffeur" would have left an emergency lane when asked and any other transportation company would have investigated their driver's misbehavior but not Uber. Uber first invaded Austin in 2014 with complete disregard for the city's rules and regulations. In the same manner on Monday an Uber driver invaded an emergency lane during an emergency with no regard to the rules and regulations of the private property he was trespassing onto and an attitude of complete arrogance and self-entitlement. Got a gift card for $100, loaded it, watching it credit to my account, ordered a car and about 2 minutes later it sent a message saying there was a problem with funding. They then said my email was wrong and zeroed the balance and the card was non refundable, non transferrable- basically they keep my 100 dollars. The main reason I refrain from entertaining weekend nights downtown is because it's a terrible cluster to find a cab ride to West Bee Cave road. It's typically an extortive $60 fare each way to downtown in a regular cab without tip. So I was thrilled when we tried Uber on a ride from the house to downtown in a clean and new SUV driven by a terrific guy for $31. What a deal! Not so fast... We hadn't heard of their price gouging "surges" during peak times when the bars close. The cost to return home? $250!!!! Really? I could just hotwire a room at the Four Seasons for less. Utterly ridiculous and taking advantage of people who are trying to be responsible and not drink and drive. By the time we finally hailed a regular cab I would have been competent enough to drive home. Such a catch 22 in Austin- get taken down to jail after a few drinks ( when I can actually drive safely if you must know- I understand my limits but it's too risky), or struggle to find a ride home without filing bankruptcy or waiting at least 30 minutes. As an occasional driver I have recently had the worst experience in customer service. First they put an old account into my bank information so that my pay was in limbo. They tried to blame me but I did not even recognize the account so there is no way I would've put those numbers in. Then they stopped payment on the debit card that actually was working! No matter what I would say they kept defending their actions as though it were for security purposes. Which is absurd because all they were really doing is not listening! Here's the thing, public transportation in Austin SUCKS. There's no denying it. Uber has been godsend in supplementing for the complete lack of efficiency with public transit. I've completely stopped using cabs because Uber drivers I feel are given a bit more incentive to give you better service. I love how some people came here to give one star reviews after NYE. Isn't that always the case? The app warns you when there's a surcharge in effect, you are choosing to pay more. That's not Uber's fault. I've always had great drivers, one of which even carried a cooler of bottled water for his riders! A cab driver would never do this. We attempted to use Uber tonight and ordered it on time and it was supposed to arrive within 7 Minutes. Within one minute we approached the door and exited and the car did not show up. We were charged $6.35 for a cancellation fee for a person that never showed up. Her name is Jessica in a Hyundai Accent KNP4186. When attempting to use the Uber app to get a refund it took us through numerous steps and still did not cycle through and allow us to submit our complaint. I have been using Uber for 2 years now and I have had several problems. I have had Uber drivers being rude to me. I have been charged a cancellation fee even though I was not the one who cancelled the ride (more than once). The prices are most of the time more expensive then Lyft. Sometimes it's takes me several minutes before anybody even picks up my ride. There have been several times where I have been charged because the Uber drivers were "unable to find me" and pretended like they couldn't here what I was saying over the phone. Woohoo, Uber Austin! Uber is a great service, plain and simple. It is convenient, safe, and cost efficient if you value time like you would money. In just about every city I've tried it, I have never had a single issue. It's no surprise the taxi lobby is coming after them hard. Taxis, for decades, have been generally unreliable, helmed by more sketchy drivers than not, driving fleets of cars that are often dirty and unsafe. I say this as someone whose father and grandfather once drove a taxi way back in the day. I have no biases here. I am just a consumer who appreciates great service and value for his buck. Taxi companies are losing their monopoly and their lobbyists and allies have naturally come out swinging with all sorts of bogus stories, and in some cases, outright lies. Do your research if you don't believe me. Has Uber had some missteps and problems along the way? Absolutely. But it's not like taxi and sedan operators haven't had their share of problems and negative press over the years. And Uber will work out their kinks - count on it. There's far too much money at stake for them not to. Taxi and sedan services are only now scrambling to get their act together because they know their monopoly has been broken. Regardless of whether you agree with this or not, one thing is for sure - change is coming. Taxi and sedan service as you've come to know it will continue to be replaced by more convenient and reliable services like Uber and Lyft. The local taxi companies' days are numbered. They made their own bed over the years. Now they can sleep in it. If you need to get from Point A to Point B and cannot drive yourself, or you simply want to enjoy the convenience of pressing button and being chauffeured around town, Uber is 100% your best option. I normally use Lyft instead of Uber but my app wasn't working last night so I tried Uber. Big mistake. The first driver I contacted called me to let me know she was ten minutes away and not 6 like the app said. OK, no problem, we can wait ten minutes. 20 minutes later she canceled the trip with no explanation. I called another driver and was given an ETA of 10 minutes. This one actually showed up but it took him 20 minutes. So for about 40 minutes my friends and I were left waiting outside, literally shivering and huddling together for warmth. When the driver finally arrived, he didn't seem to understand how to operate his GPS and claimed he could not find the intersection of two streets, and that we needed an actual address. None of us knew the address so we just told him to take our directions. We got on 35 going north and decided to head to my apartment around 35 and 51st instead of where we were previously going. When we told the driver, for some reason he decided to take a detour down Manor road which is not on the way at all. It took some serious effort to convince him that I was correct about how to get to my own home. We circled back to the highway and when I told him what turn to take he started yelling angrily at all of us that we weren't telling him the right way to go and almost missed the turn, then at the last second swerved to make it. Finally I got home and went inside, only to find that the driver did not end the trip after dropping me off, forcing me to cancel. Apparently Uber has a $5 cancelation fee. This morning I got the bill and it was $213 for a trip that should have been less than 5 miles. Livid does not begin to describe how I feel. I have never been treated so rudely by a driver and in the future I will be sticking with Lyft or a cab. Cabs may be expensive but even Yellow Cab doesn't charge me $200+ to go 5 miles! And the drivers don't usually yell at you for trying to give them directions. Furthermore, this driver hassled us and demanded a cash tip. Do yourself a favor and do not take Uber unless you're using a free ride credit. read more
