There are not a whole lots of businesses in the town square, but the ones they do have rock! There's a hip little coffee/sandwich/art shop, a pizzeria, a Mexican restaurant, a grocery store, a family diner, a brewery, some historic buildings and the famous courthouse, shops, a funky water tower, a farmer's market, a dollar store, a cute LOVE sign, (etc) and of course A LITTLE POST OFFICE! Yes, it's a boring building, square brick, it needs a facelift! The parking lot it patchy, and it's rather dismal inside, and can use to be spiffed up! Just about all the businesses around here have fabulous mural painted on the sides of the buildings, at last count there were about 14 (seeing these murals is a must if you visit this area), planters and are pleasant to look at, then comes this p.o. eyesore. Come on Montross, step it up, and refurbish this important govt. facility and bring it up to date with the rest of this artsy town! The post office is well-stocked and there's a greeting card kiosk, but no passport services. There's definitely that small town vibe here where the employees know most of their neighbors and give them friendly, helpful service. Hours: M-F 8:30-1:30, 2:30-5:00 Saturday 9:30-12:00

Walking through George Washington's home and learning more about his life gave us an even greater appreciation for the man behind the history. The staff and volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions. We also enjoyed the museum and exhibits, which added so much to the experience. Plan to spend several hours here because there's a lot to see. If you're visiting the DC area, I highly recommend making time for Mount Vernon. It's well worth the trip.

Firstly, Mount Vernon is vastly huge. Plan on being exhausted after walking for several hours. Also dedicate at least half a day or more because there is a lot to take in. The gift shop has a lot going on. There's sections with a bit of everything. What I will say is that you should really take your time and enjoy. Overall, if this is your thing, I can't say anything bad about it. I probably would not want to visit again. It is affordable for families and there's a lot to do and see.
