Been to this establishment quite a few times since I work nearby. It's just been a little annoying to get there because of the rail construction on Dillingham Blvd. I don't mind walking there since it's the best way for me to get there, but man oh man, it does get hot when you're walking around lunch time. The food in my opinion is worth it though. My top faves is their grilled salmon with a choice of white or brown rice and their mushroom chicken . I try to order brown rice whenever it's offered. The plate comes with spring salad and macaroni salad. Good size portion that you eat half of and save the rest if you can. Everything I've ordered so far has been really tasty. No dine in here. There are grab to go bentos if you're in a hurry but if you call it i your order it's just as quick. A nice variety of food to choose from and they serve breakfast too. They do catering too, so they can be busy putting orders together. The staff there is super nice and friendly. It's worth a trip there if you're in the area. A hidden gem so to speak... it's right on Kokea near Nisshodo. Japanese bento lunches that taste like they were made for a sit down meal with tablecloth and flowers. That good! We ordered Garlic salmon and Hamburger steak. Each serving was large enough to satisfy anyone. It included rice, tossed salad (with seared hot dog) and a delicious new Mac salad! Prices were reasonable considering portion size. Only thing to request is a larger scoop of macaroni salad. Service was excellent and the place is clean and neat. What a nice surprise to see a new shop in this shopping complex. There seems to be a lot of new places popping up around this neighborhood. They're located in the same complex as Yohei/Hana Tea in the far back corner, so unless you go down that way, it'll be easy to miss and not know it even exists there. There's some parking stalls, in the past, it would always be quite crowded, but I think after the pandemic people have been going in and out and not really hanging around the establishments. The parking can be really tight too so be careful. They serve mostly bentos, and there are some cold bento's and sandwiches in their refrigerator. Most of the main entrees are about $14/each. I got to try the pork kakuni & salmon dynamite and out of the two the pork kakuni was the best entree. I definately want to try other items and breakfast in the future as well. Service was really quick and they were kind enough to let my dog inside for a bit. Enjoy trying out new places. Decided to grab some take out. I got the salmon katsu which comes with Mac salad and tossed greens. My coworkers got the hamburger steak and garlic chicken. The salmon katsu was crisp and delicious. It was drizzled with some sauce but I added a bit more of the katsu sauce. It hit the spot. Definitely would check this place out again. Wow! Stopped in since we went to Subway next door and came across a $5 bento! Couldn't not try it! It had a big piece of chikuwa, fish, half a croquette, and rice with nori and hijiki! There were also lots of made to order plate lunches that I have to come back and try! Great find! read more

I needed something quick and ready to-go when I stopped by U Kitchen and that's exactly what I got. The pre-made bentos and musubis are grab and go ready, cheap, and delicious. They also have plate lunch options that are made-to-order. I picked up a pre-made bento with rice, salmon, fried fish, shrimp tempura, gyoza, and a seaweed salad. I also picked out an inari and hijiki musubi. I believe my total order came out to under $20. I actually came here when trying to pick up my car from the docks before realizing that the shipping office takes a lunch break in the middle of the day. So, I can see this spot being really popular for folks who work on the docks! It was a quick 5 minute drive from Matson. A highlight of U Kitchen are their $5.99 breakfast plates that are served from 7am-10am. There's the deluxe breakfast with two eggs, sausage spam, mochiko chicken, and salad. The noribento is also $5.99 and comes with fried white fish, fried chikuwa, michiko chicken, and salad. Another huge plus, especially in town, is the parking lot. I didn't get parking right in front of U Kitchen but they do share a huge parking lot with the rest of Dillingham Plaza. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat that doesn't break the budget- I'd highly recommend U Kitchen. They are located on Dillingham off of Kokea. In the same area as Nisshodo. Parking is horrible during lunch time and fills up pretty quick there always seems to be a stall with a cone in it not too sure why. People also park terribly because you can hardly see the lines and it's parking in general is pretty tight. But besides that the food here is delicious they only do take out and they ask you to wait outside for your food if you do order there. The bentos are super convenient if are in a rush and they are only $6 which is a steal! My favorite was the yakisoba with takoyaki because I loveeee takoyaki. The pork kakuni was very soft and tender. A lot of my coworkers were confused about the tomato and sausage on the toothpick because they thought it was unusual, nothing wrong with it. Been wanting to try this place for a while now and I am so glad I finally got there! Costco run on Saturday brought me to U Kitchen in Kalihi. Ordered their daily special garlic steak and sukiyaki plate. OMG! I love this place! Found out thru a friend when she bought it to work. I've had the chicken katsu bowl, Salmon Dynamite, Menchi Katsu/Katsu Curry, Pork Kakuni, Sukiyaki Bento. I want to try everything but I am HOOKED on the Menchi Katsu & Sukiyaki Bento. Their Menchi Katsu is delicious! It has great flavor with the right balance of fat and a light thin crust that isnt too oily. The rice is perfectly cooked and their sides (Mac salad, Green salad, Cherry tomato with cut hotdog) really go well with the whole plate lunch. I dont know many places with menchi katsu and the last time I had it was shirokiya times but this place def does it right! I highly recommend get this when you visit. Great place for bentos! Food was fresh, tasty and nutritious. Right away you know you are eating quality Japanese food when you taste the rice, this is good rice, fluffy and each grain cooked to perfection. I got their Sukiyaki Bento which comes in a fancy box with cranes on it. Good portion of tasty meat, pickled daikon, braised hard boiled egg, mushroom, carrot/tofu/cabbage/glass noodles. I have an allergy to garlic and onion and the person taking my order really took note of that. I called in my order ahead of time and it was still hot when I picked it up. Thank you Donna O and Lunch Buddy for putting U Kitchen on my radar! They told me about the $5.99 bento deal before 11am and I was sold on going to check them out. Much thanks for Jo Y for her description of the Pork Kakuni plate in her great review! Unfortunately, I missed the 11am deadline the day I went because my sister was discharged later than expected. I wanted to call in a phone order but no phone number is listed for the restaurant. It's ok though because we got to try other items on their menu. U Kitchen is located in Kokea Center (thanks Peter Y) that is the same complex housing Yohei and Hana Tea in Dillingham. There is a shared lot that you can park in but the stalls are a little tight. The place is designed for take out as there is no dining space available. I ordered their Chicken Katsu, Sukiyaki Bento and Pork Kakuni. My mind was preoccupied so I forgot to tell them to sub the mac salad with toss salad but next time. Each plate comes with rice, mac salad and tossed salad. Both the Sukiyaki Bento and Pork Kakuni came with a seasoned boiled egg cut in half. I had a piece of the Chicken Katsu and Sukiyaki beef. They were both very good. The katsu was so juicy and perfectly fried. Their sauce was the perfect compliment to the dish. Next time I think I want to try their Chicken Katsu Curry dish. My dish was the Pork Kakuni and it was delicious! The pork was so tender and flavorful. It rested on the rice so the sauce seeped into the rice make it that much tastier. The style of take out container was a poor choice as a lot of the rice stuck to the walls of the container. Their egg was tasty but I prefer it to be cooked 1-2 minutes less so the yolk is not as "done" but that's personal preference. The salad came with a ranch style dressing. Surprisingly the mac salad didn't have much mayonnaise so I could eat some of it. Not my favorite but this Japanese style mac salad is better than the local style of mac salad. I really enjoyed the food and came back for a second visit shortly after my first visit. Arrived around 2pm and the place was bare as most of the items they sell on their shelves were sold. Good for them! They were supplying one of their businesses that they wholesale to when I arrived. During this second visit, I ordered their Chicken Katsu Curry. The curry was tasty and was just enough for the plate. I appreciated that they have it in a separate container to keep the chicken katsu crispy. It was perfectly fried and the meat was so moist. I did ask them to sub the mac salad with toss salad with no dressing as I wanted to use my own (healthier option than what they offer). Why not 5 stars if I loved their food so much? Well it's because of their inconsistent customer service. After I ordered on my first visit, I had to mention to the cashier about the token that I read about for their little machine for a prize. I won a musubi but they didn't have any so she said I can have soda. Since I don't drink soda, she said I could have a bottle of water. I ended up finding a can of coffee in the back so I opted for that to give Mink. The next customer, who was Japanese and spoke Japanese, ordered 1 plate and was presented the token right away. He also won a musubi but was offered one of their tempura rolls with 2-3 pieces in it. I didn't get that option! Not cool at all and right in front of me. It's gracious of the restaurant to offer a complimentary prize in these tough economical times but I wasn't a fan of the way I was treated. This was our first meal on the island after leaving the airport. Takeout only, masks mandatory, no outdoor seating. It took a good 25 min. for our food to get ready and, truth be told, it was not worth the wait. We found a nearby park to picnic and I was not blown away with my plate lunch. The chicken Katsu was tasteless, as was the fried shrimp. I could have used some hot sauce, salt, anything to liven it up but we were blocks away and the enclosed sauce served in small ketchup packets could not help it much. I didn't care for the macaroni salad and my vegetarian daughter did not appreciate the slices of ham she found in it. My wife and daughter did enjoy their meals so 3 stars, I guess. read more

Their breakfast bentos (7-10am only) are also a good deal for $6- you can choose the deluxe with eggs sausage spam mochiko chicken, or the noribento with fish, chikuwa and mochiko chicken. A cute Japanese plate lunch spot in Kalihi! They essentially have everything you could want for a simple and affordable lunch. Lots of grab and go options including premade bentos, sushi and onigiri, sandwiches and salads. If you have the time though, I'd recommend trying one of their made to order plates or bowls. We tried multiple things here already including the kakuni plate, spicy chicken, mixed fry, and dynamite salmon. The dynamite salmon might be my current favorite with a delicious sriracha mayo imitation crab mixture covering the salmon. The mixed fry plate was surprisingly huge and contained chicken katsu, croquette, and two ebi fry. This would've been my favorite if the chicken wasn't dry and stringy :( Onigiri aren't too bad but a little heavy on the rice. Gotta admit...I was skeptical. Pics looked pretty good, but I dunno...maybe just the aesthetics of the menu was just not what struck me as place that could produce quality food. Well hot damn, the food was good. Got the saba. Yum. Nice and moist, cooked perfectly, good taste. Big slab so had another meal. Hubs got the unagi, large. Wow. I don't know if it's top quality, but I loved it. He forgot he had a lunch and went out. Good. I stole his unagi for 2 other meals. Yum. Sukiyaki bento box was all cute - heard it was good. Friends said mochiko chicken was good. Katsu curry was good. Everyone happy and full...and most of us had leftovers. Oh and good prices! I heard from my friend that the Korean restaurant we used to go to "Arirang Bar-B-Q" has closed and it's now a small Japanese take out bento shop, called U-Kitchen. First, I thought she meant "You Kitchen" or "Your Kitchen", but it's U-Kitchen. The place closes early by 4 pm and closed on Sundays. Today I was in the area and was on vacation, & noticed they were opened early for breakfast! I arrived just before 9 and they had some things ready like some musubis and some fruits and yogurt parfaits. Muffins & Danishes weren't ready yet that they bring in. Some of the sandwiches & ready to eat fruits in containers were ready to go out to another vendor in Waikiki. They have some refrigerated sides for purchase like Japanese potato salad, Shrimp salad, pasta salad, chicken salad & ready to heat pastas. They have sandwiches and fruit sandwiches when available. The $5.99 breakfasts were made to order from 8 am - 10 am. (Breakfast menu sign said 7am-10am but presently opens at 8am per the business hours sign) I had time, so I didn't mind waiting. When I saw what I got, It was worth the wait and would go back again for breakfast. Local breakfast of 2 egg, rice, mochiko chicken, spam (2) sausage(2) & salad looked really good and I saw a posting of the photo on Yelp. When I saw the Nori bento for $5.99 (fried white fish, fried chikuwa (curry taste), mochiko chicken, Nori on rice & salad), I knew I wanted that for sure and couldn't believe how good the price was! It wasn't a small bento or samples but a generous regular-size portion in a regular styrofoam container! I also wanted to try regular lunch plate and I was tempted to get the mochiko chicken, but got the hamburger steak because I like the Japanese Demi-glacé. It was in a large styrofoam container, one good size homemade hamburger with sauté onions! Comes with rice, green salad with creamy sesame dressing, Japanese macaroni salad with corn on top! Yum! I was a little early so the lady in the front didn't know what they will be having for today's $5 bento and the $9.50 bento for lunch until after breakfast! Wow I wonder what's the $5 bento!! Everyday maybe a different special. Have to return for that. Since I'm getting a regular lunch plate, I get to play and receive a prize from the vending machine that was filled with orange colored plastic eggs-like capsule with a prize typed on the paper! It reminded of the Shirokiya gachapon vendor machines which dispensed capsule with toys or gacha chips which I still have many gacha chips that I've invested in before Shirokiya has closed. Oh well. Anyways, I won a bottled water! Some prizes could be a can drink or even a sandwich! Yay! Such a nice touch! U-Kitchen is a new name and menu but they were in Shirokiya Japan Village Walk before under the name, "Usagiya"!! I'm so glad they found another place. So sad .. I do miss Shirokiya Japan Village Walk! Excellent service and the food was yummy. Take my word for what I ate! Nori Bento for breakfast and Japanese hamburger steak! I can't wait to try the mochiko chicken, Katsu curry & for breakfast, Nori Bento!!! I could eat Nori Bento every morning! Lol! Their business hours is from 8am-4pm except Sundays they are closed. Located across HCC next to subway is where this hole in the wall is located. It's a small restaurant and I don't think there's a dine in place in there. Didn't really explore but I don't remember seeing a sitting area to eat. I maybe wrong and please don't use that against me. Bentos are cheap there. I don't know where you can get 5 dollar bentos these days. I didn't end up getting a bento because I wanted to try a plate lunch. Wanted to try a combo plate but too bad you can't make your own combo. I ended up getting the mix fried combo. The only plate that they sell that has variety in it. The mixed fried combo Came with chicken katsu, 2 fried shrimp and a croquette. Maybe I was expecting more reading some reviews but maybe I ordered the wrong plate. Pretty decent japanese bento place right next to subway. Name doesn't sound catchy or entice you to a eating place but there's food here! A few grab n go bentos ($5-10+), cold pastas (under $5!), to prepared cut fruits, fruit sandos (sandwich) musubi etc. Also a hot menu that's cooked to order so call in or wait 10min+ for your order. Shrimp tempura grab n go bento was $5! Yes not hot and crispy but for the price was great. Got the garlic chicken plate as well. Made to order and steaming hot when I got it. Little on the different side than going down to sugoi etc. Like a chewy mochicko batter and house made garlic shoyu style with crispy garlic chips on top. Mac was different don't know what was in it but liked it along with the flavor to it. Toss with sesame dressing always good and refreshing. Like the little toothpick with a cherry tomato and a aribiki on top, ate it both same time and liked that combo. Also if you get a plate etc here you'll get a chance to open a plastic container like those ones we all had to get a gumball or toy from lol and may get something free! I got a free can drink! It took really long to get the food. When I got my food there was hair in it. They do take out so I discovered it after and couldn't show them. The spicy chicken is actually fried and the hair was stuck in the batter. They didnt have this item in the fried section. I wouldnt have gotten it had I known it was fried. My friend raved about this place. I say I am not impressed. There are bentos you can get for $5.00 till 11:00am. I called at 10:55 to order one and they said they dont have anymore. How unfortunate. Came here on a Monday for a late lunch. Easy parking. Got the menchi katsu. Sadly beef sukiyaki was sold out. I'll come earlier next time. Came with a really good macaroni salad that a had a little good tasting sausage with it. The macaroni salad perfectly complimented the menchi Katsu. There was also a small green salad. My dad was impressed by the garlic shrimp he got. He kept marveling that they gave him nine large shrimp. He was able to save three for later. Did an office run here a couple of times. Everyone enjoyed just about everything on the menu so far but I am set on the Sukiyaki bento. Its a must have! read more
