This place was pretty good. My hubs and I are in the area with our pup so we just wanted to try this place out since it's always caught our eye but we never went in. We ended getting two hamburger specials that came with fries and a drink. The price is pretty average considering the area that we are in. Other than that, the decor of the place is your typical burger joint; wide, bright and you can smell the cooking goodness nearby. Also, the customer service was pleasant. Always served with a smile and willing to help. Anywho--back to the food. We received our order in no time and decided to dine in. You get your own fountain drink and our hamburgers were filled with the works as requested; ketchup, mustard, pickles, grille onions, lettuce and tomatoes. The burger itself was really good. The meat that is utilized for the burger comes from the butcher shop next door which is Hofherr Meat Co. and they are DELCIOUS in their own right. The burger was perfectly cooked and juicy, the condiments were good and the grilled onions were so yummy and succulent, really adding a nice flavor to the burger. Overall, I really enjoyed being here and eating the food. I definitely want to come back but maybe next time, I will try eating the hot dogs instead of the burgers. If you are in the area, definitely give this place a try but it's not something that I would really go out of my way for. So, we stopped at Hofherr Meat Co. around lunchtime for some deli meat. I've got that dry ice container going on in the car. As we were about ready to jump in the car, I saw U Dog U and thought, why not? Besides, I was planning on going to The Works off Golf Road, but I'm parked right in front of this place. We go in, and blam, there is the menu, which is easy to read and straightforward. The place was clean, including the restrooms, which is always a good sign. If they're trashed and nasty and visible to customers, how are things behind the counter? No worries here. Plus, they had someone cleaning tables and sweeping, too. Spotless joint. Next, the food. We ordered the sausage with green pepper and some french fries. It was freshly prepared and right on, too. We were happy, and as we were leaving, this chap looked at me and says, "Have a good one and come again." We replied, "Thank you, and we will." Best of luck to this place. Good people. read more

We started going to this restaurant when it was located on Touhy in Niles. I don't get there as often as I used to since it moved to Northfield, maybe once every couple years now, but this time I had a chance to talk to Fritz, one of the original employees. Not only did he remember me, he remembered what I always used to order. I'd call that excellent service! My usual order is a double char dog, American cheese only. This time I got a jumbo char with American instead, and it was excellent, too. I also ordered coffee, and they didn't have any fresh, so made a pot just for me. I was very appreciative, as it was a really cold day! I look forward to being in the area and coming back again, hopefully sooner than two years from now! read more

I've been coming to U Dawg U since I can remember. It was owned originally by Robby and everything was as legendary as it always had been. 25-some odd years later passed and he sold the restaurant to a few of his workers which was ok for a time, but then dipped. I even stopped going because who serves hotdogs on stale buns? Now a few years later and it's been sold again to NEW owners so I had to come back in and check it out. They have transformed U Dawg U back to its original legendary state. I love to see some of the original workers too! Feels like the good ol' days with those real 100% Vienna Beef dawgs and those fabulous seasoned waffle fries with that real chili and *Merkts* cheddar cheese for me. We were in the area doing other fun things and looked up Hot Dogs! The place was very busy , clean, and friendly staff! They had Homer ice cream which I may get at another visit ! There were more than one way to get a creation but malts are a fave . Didn't take a picture of our sandwiches because decided to just eat in the car and go. My sandwich was epic if you like salami . It was a grilled salami sandwich on an onion roll with grilled onions and mustard. My daughter had a polish sausage sandwich . Too many things to try! See you next time read more

Today on the menu...2 Chicago Style hot dogs with fries and a root beer. How shocking. Stopped here, thanks to the Vienna Beef hot dog locator. I've been to the UDawgU location on Touhy Ave. and the quality of both are exceptional to me. I love the charm of this location, from the exterior cottage feel to its second floor seating area which was closed at this time. Darn!!! The walls was lined with professional and neighborhood sports memorabilia on the walls and I think my first S. Rosen signage. ME WANT ONE!!! (Plus, their is a BBQ equipment and meat market next door, I will have to come back.) I was greeted by two order takers. My order was taken quickly and to take a seat and my food will be coming out soon. Took a seat, filled my drink, snapped a couple more pics and my dogs was there. I do love additions to an already perfect hot dog, love a light sprinkle of sauerkraut. Don't knock it, until you try it. I knew this was a 5 star dog when I start making involuntary mmm's and yeah's after each bite of a pure beef Vienna Beef snap dog with a handful of fries shoved in my mouth. The ingredients all played well together and the chew of a great casing dog was worth it. Nothing overwhelmed the onions, peppers and tomatoes. And the fries was salty, fluffy and fried correctly. Don't knock frozen fries if they're deep fried correctly right. One of the things that really put this place over the top was the guy who walked over to my table and asked me "Was everything ok? With all the amazing reviews, I think my expectations were maybe too high. On the positive side, this place is spotlessly clean and the staff is super kind and friendly. Order at the counter and they'll bring your food out to your table. They have a pretty diverse menu that also includes salads and Homer's ice cream. Food-wise, I got a hot dog and sweet potato fries. The hotdog was fine. The bun was kind of soggy, though. And I found the sweet potato fries to be over-cooked, so probably wouldn't do those again. Getting two dill pickle spears on my hotdog was a treat, though. I would definitely try it again, and maybe just order differently. read more

Standard hot dogs, burgers and fries joint. They do have quite a lot of options here to choose from. Walked in here on a Friday evening and no one was in there but there were plenty of staff to help. Ordered 4 Chicago style dogs, pizza puff, cheese fries and cheese curds. Everything was made to order. The pizza puff was nostalgic of my high school days. The hot dogs were decent, I'm not a huge fan of the huge snap on the casing making it hard to bite into. $4.50 for a Chicago dog. read more

We have had the great misfortune of being met with bad attitudes by a lot of small business owners in Northfield. Whoever ran U Dawg U on Sat Mar 27 was incredibly warm and welcoming. It was especially appreciated at a time when we are slightly hesitant to dine out. Aside from the nice service, nothing beats an old school cheeseburger. I expect this to be my regular spot as I grow up here! read more

Wow. First of all, they bring the food to your table. Surprising for a fast food place. 2 dogs perfectly made Chicago-style. Cheddar Fries were awesome. They fill a cup full of fries, and add cheese as they're filling fries. And I'm assuming is MERKT'S cheddar cheese sauce!! Or similar to it. Very high quality. Hard to find places that serve Merkt's. Lastly ordered a chocolate shake. Because calorie intake was not high enough with just the food. Shake was a little too thin... but still 5 stars. Great attitude from the employees as well. What's a really good hot dog joint doing in a place like this in the burbs? And yet, this is what fast food should be. Solid hamburgers, classic Chicago dogs and good crinkle fries and onion rings cooked fresh to order. It's a bit disorganized to order but once we did, it moved quickly for lunch. Hit UDawgU on national hot dog day. They provided a BOGO offer for all hot dogs. We got two jumbos and two regulars to feed the family. All were prepared Chicago style. We also bought a large fry to split. Food was served quickly. Staff was friendly. Restaurant and outside patio were clean and they were pretty busy because of the deal. I love getting to hot dogs with a side of fries and a drink because that is a filling meal right after I have a really big event. This is the sort of place you could see yourself becoming a regular at. French fries: 3 out of 5 stars. They're fine. Crinkle cut fries, which have the potential to be amazing, except the they are inconsistent here. Some of them overcooked, some of them under, some perfect. Each time is different. It looks like you're being given Portillo's fries, which is good. They don't taste as good as Portillo's fries, which is bad. Italian beef: 4 out of 5. I was pleasantly surprised by the Italian beef here. I usually don't trust new places to give good Italian beef sandwiches, but after taking a chance I truly enjoyed the sandwich. Good bun, decent meat, well dipped. Cost: Honestly, this is the main issue I have with this place. It's just a little too expensive for what you get. Then again, I'm old enough to remember when you could get a hot dog and fries for $2. Maybe it's just a different time. Summary: U dawg U is a nice, clean restaurant, filled with friendly staff that give good service and decent food that is somewhat overpriced. Super great food at very reasonable prices and tremendous customer service

Ever since the death of fRedhots, I've been looking for another dealer for my occasional lunchtime hot-dog fix. U Dawg U wins the election--but not because of their hot dogs. I wasn't aware of them until recently, but I've been going regularly, trying a lot of the menu which ranges from the traditional burgers-and-dogs-joint fare to nice changes of pace such as wraps, a turkey polish sausage, and a decent barbecue chicken salad. Sadly, there is no alligator sausage or reindeer dog on their menu, but that might be asking a bit too much. The hot dogs come out of a warming pan and feel a little soft. Everything else is cooked to order, including a perfect polish and a solid bratwurst. The turkey burger is a little dry but otherwise solid. The italian beef tastes great and is NOT dripping wet like some places serve it. (My dainty hands appreciate that.) The fried salami sandwich...well, let's just say that there are few pleasures in life as simultaneously sublime and deadly as a fried salami sandwich with mustard and grilled onions. Like the owner/manager said to me on the way out that day, "You can't do that every day, but it sure is great." Correct and correct, sir. The people are extremely helpful and welcoming. I think that they might be starting to recognize me, but in truth, the service seems to be just as warm whether you are a regular or a first-timer. Both the french fries and the sweet potato fries are perfectly cooked but sometimes leave a slick feeling in my mouth. I wonder what kind of frying oil they are using. It's turned me off the fries, but as a side-dish alternative, you can get corn OFF the cob (seasonally). Just add a little butter, salt, and pepper if the corn isn't quite sweet enough yet. And their fried mushrooms are some of the best around, not salty or too greasy and stand up well on their own, or you can use the slightly tangy white sauce that comes with. On top of everything else, they make a mean chocolate malt. I took that as a second choice when they didn't have the right ice cream to make a strawberry shake. Sacrifices. In any case, these guys will go into the regular lunch rotation despite the longer-than-desirable drive from my office location through the congested Willow Road corridor. read more

The food is classic Chicago hot dog stand food, but better. Everything is great, and freshly prepared. What sets this place apart is the service. The people that work there are genuinely kind. There's a gentleman who is constantly wiping down tables, helping with dirty plates and trays, all without asking. And there's a nice man, believe his name is Nassir, coming by to check if everything was good. He was even kind enough to give my 6 year old some strawberry ice cream, just offered it up.
