Oy vey! Reading other reviews, I was worried that I'd either be eating cardboard, or be required to lock myself in the bathroom for 3-5 business days. Neither was the case, and it was instead an above-average fast food experience. Now... do you remember when the fries at McD's were actually worth raving about? Yeah... it was likely when they were cooked in beef tallow, as opposed to oil with beef flavor added (really!). I don't buy into the belief that one must go after seed oils with torch and pitchforks, but I do love a darn good fry, and Steak 'n Shake delivered! They were hot, fresh, and well seasoned. The burger itself was respectable as far as fast food goes. It was cooked fresh and assembled with care. The meat was well seasoned, and the veggies gave a good balance in terms of freshness. While the smashed patties didn't have the lacy crisp edges a next-level smashburger does, it's fast food, so I'm not going to hold it against them (I may be tough, but I am reasonable!). It did take a hot minute for the food to come out, but I was not in a hurry, and I want to recognize that everything appeared to be cooked fresh to order. It was very quiet at the time, so please be aware that during a busy time, YMMV. Finally, the service was perfectly polite and friendly. SNS is quite the wildcard in the fast food world. I feel as though they were once the place to be on a good night and now just another sign on the freeway. Although I think some level they are underrated as their shakes still hit fairly well. I've through here a few times with my buddy in the last year or so, and they keep a fairly clean place. They have fully moved to kiosks for ordering now, but still do have the ability to use cash. I am on board with this as it makes for Quicker processes and no lines. I find the beverage system to be quite interesting, as you get a receipt with code to scan by the drink machine so you're able to fill your cup (not sure what they're preventing though). The steak frank is not much to go home about, though its not the worst thing ever. Ok at best. Fries are good, but thats about where that parade ends. The onions rings absolutely slap for sure and are a staple on the menu! But why 3 stars? Because of the mood. It's honestly sort of depressing when theres only 9 people inside. It has been a while since I've been to Steak and Shake. Now you order at a kiosk, pay and they call your number and you pick up your food at the counter. You get your own drink but you have to prompt them to give you a cup. This location was bright, clean and looked as if the furniture had been replaced. I remember it before as kinda grimy so it looked refreshed and upgraded. Our order was up quickly. This Steak 'n Shake was near the children's museum and we wanted to indulge in their happy hour. From 2-4 on weekdays you get half off your shake so shake your tail feather and go get some! We went through the drive thru and the line went pretty fast. The shake I had was creamy, thick, and delicious, the perfect thing to drink on our journey back to the house. Ehhhhh not the best experience here. Came with two friends on a Sunday night. They had one server working the entire restaurant (and this includes seating parties and bussing tables). He did a great job and was hustling, but it was ridiculous and I felt so bad for him. It was all he could do to get people seated in a reasonable amount of time and take and serve orders. The table across from us sat with dirty dishes almost the entire time we were there because he had no time. At one point someone who looked like a manger came out to help, but he didn't seem to be doing enough to alleviate the pressure. The food was fine. I don't get what's so exciting about the steakburger, but the bacon cheeseburger I had was fine (likely a little bit nicer than McDonald's). The egg nog shake I got was delicious, but there was wayyyyyyy too much nutmeg on the top, it actually made my stomach turn a bit. The garlic Parmesan 'add on' for my fries was just a pre-made mix shaken over the fries, which tasted okay but wasn't evenly distributed over the fries. Their prices here are great, the burger combo was only $3.99, so that's good. Despite the hustle of our sever we saw him only to take our orders, drop off our order, and drop off the check. Not his fault as he was swamped, but it was noticeable that he never came back to check in. According to my friends who eat here more often, this isn't a rare occurrence. This might have been the very best service I have received in a Steak 'n Shake, well...ever. Maxx F. was pretty solid. Usually the service is abysmal, tonight was a different story. Quick with the refills, suggested a shake for dessert, got the order correct.. A new milestone. Why not five stars? Walking in the "Please wait to be seated" sign did not bode well. as there was only one other table seated in the restaurant. And wait we did indeed. I was very happy with service and quality of food here. We ordered 4 shakes during happy hour, and the triple burgers which are amazing with everything on it. The fries were hot and my kids loved them. We had some with cheese and one container of cheese was fresh and hot, the other looked like slime (my kids said that lol) I'm assuming one was our longer then the other. I took a star off bc of that. Service was friendly, we did drive thru around 2:15pm. The burger with no bun was delicious. First time in the area checking out this Steak and Shake. My girlfriend has never been to one so this was the perfect place to check out. Plus the IHOP next door, didn't seem to want our service since all the lights were already off. Anyway we got here, found great parking and sat right down. Our waiter was nice for the most and was attentive. The food was phenomenal to say the least, great price great quality as well. The place was not that busy and we were greeted by staff and sat down at a table of our choice. We ordered burgers, which all come with fries. The price here is cheaper than most places for a burger considering it also comes with fries. Though I'd say compared to a burger place up the road, the buns here do not hold up. I had a triple steakburger and the bun just completely crumbled when picking up the burger after cutting it in half. It also was soggy after sitting with the pattys on top of it and the juices running down into the bun. The fries are good though, thin and crispy. The portion of fries on a burger plate is equivalent to a small. The kids meal is also cheap in price and the portion is decent, though if you have a bigger eater they probably will eat two meal portions especially with the mac and cheese portion. And the mac and cheese seems like boxed mac and cheese. When you get your food and the bill you bring it up to the counter to pay. read more

I haven't been at a Steak & Shake in recent memory. I loved it back in the day when it was a special visit because there was no S&S nearby. I had a standard double-cheese burger and the skinny fries they are famous for. It was excellent and almost everything I remember about the burger. I like how the burger is cooked to order. However since I was sitting at the small 4 seat counter I was able to watch the grill. The burger smasher/flipper was pre-cooking a few burgers which I didn't like. I love the crispy edges on the patties when cooked to order. Perhaps he was getting ready for the lunch time rush but not cool at all. Also the double cheese burger has two patties but only one slice of cheese, not cool again. Fries with the seasoned salt were hot and crispy. How do they make a profit at these prices? Okay, I understand you don't just come to Steak 'n Shake for the food. Yes, we've been known to feast on their Malts and Shakes as well. Several weeks ago, I received some calamitous news, namely that the Steak and Shake near my office sells half-priced milkshakes from 2-4pm. Now, I've never eaten at Steak and Shake because a glance at their menu makes my skin crawl (like most fast food). But I sure do love milkshakes (that's right, I'll suck down milkshakes like Linda Lovelace but I draw the line at deep-fried triple burgers and bacon-cheddar onion rings...call me a hypocrite if you want). So that's the problem: I love milkshakes and I love deals, but I also love appearing attractive to the opposite sex and not dying young. But since I have no willpower, I knew that it was only a matter of time, and apparently today was the day. I will say that $1.65 for a 20-ounce milkshake is pretty much the best value on the planet. And it wasn't bad. I ordered a chocolate malt, my usual, and would have appreciated being offered the choice of no whipped cream. That garbage does not belong on a milkshake. Anyway, this thing was pretty solid, not the best and not the worst. Good consistency, near-perfect sweetness, perhaps a bit imbalanced in favor of too much malt and not enough chocolate. It seems like the service here is based on the particular employees who you happen to get. One experience with manager "Ruben" was absolutely appalling, having cold food even fries caused by employees and refusing to make it correctly, while the experience under the other manager working at the same time is perfect, and being informed of the way to ensure a cheaper same order. It's really just a normal or standard level of service but being that it's a Steak 'N' Shake that's incredibly surprising... Of course, regardless of the employees I interact with the bathroom is still dirty and at this particular location there is nothing available with which to clean yourself if using the bathroom... I ordered a half strawberry half vanilla shake and it was a sweet and smooth decadent treat I could probably have every day but I don't wanna blow up like a blimp.
