I have been a patron of Marin now for over a year--after being with my previous salon for over 15…read moreyears. That was a huge change for me but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I originally started coming to Marin for my colorist Michelle DiGiovanni. I didn't start coloring my hair until my late 30s because I always thought it was too high maintenance and would be damaging to my hair. But, I went through a mini mid-life crisis where I wanted to dye my hair pink and thankfully I listened to Michelle when she said "maybe let's try to ease in with a balayage first." And many years later my appointments with Michelle are one of the few things I religiously make sure I keep as part of my self-care. She has always done an amazing job adding depth and dimension to my hair that feels natural. It also ages well and I never feel it looks "bad" even when I'm due for a gloss. It just wears in and makes such a huge difference for me in feeling put together. Michelle is just also a great person who is always fun to catch up with and a cat lover to boot! (Which is definitely a plus in my book) Michelle also introduced me to my stylist Bria Salvador-French who I've been seeing now for the last year. Bria came highly recommended as she cuts Michelle's hair (which always looks amazing). From my first appointment I knew I was in good hands. She taught me so many new things on how to do my hair in a low maintenance way. And most of all, she listened and really made me feel cared for as a woman and as a person. Something that I realize in hindsight I was missing previously. Her skills and craft speak for themselves but the extra care is what sets her apart. I would highly recommend both Michelle and Bria for all your hair needs.

I came in for a root touch-up with the fairly simple expectation that my roots would match the rest…read moreof my hair. Instead, the result looked like three different colours: reddish roots, a darker band and lighter lengths. The stylist tried adjusting it with a demi-permanent colour, which I appreciated, but it still didn't blend. Afterwards, I asked for a consultation to discuss what would be needed at my next appointment. I wasn't requesting a free correction or asking them to cover the cost. I just wanted to understand how we could get the colour right. I then received a voicemail saying the salon had refunded $103 and cancelled all my future appointments because they didn't feel we were a good fit. When I went in to explain, they said they considered my stylist very talented and that if she couldn't make me happy, they didn't think anyone there could. I appreciate the refund, but this was a disappointing way to handle a concern. I wasn't questioning whether someone could "make me happy"--I was asking about a visible colour difference. Matching the roots to the rest of the hair seems a reasonable expectation for a root touch-up, and I'd hoped for a conversation about how to achieve that.

You know how when you find a salon that you truly love, you make it your go-to? Well, for six…read moreyears, I haven't been able to find a salon that felt like mine. I'd been going to this extra-expensive, snobby salon in the Loop, close to my job. Now I work in Logan, and on a whim, I canceled my appointment at the old salon and made one at Doll Heads. I found out about this shop from an article talking about how they just opened amidst the pandemic. Honestly, the photos of their shampoo chairs was a big factor in my decision to try them out. As soon as I walked in, a David Bowie song welcomed me into the salon, which was adorned with INCREDIBLY cute and colorful decorations. At first glance, the entire place was cheery, adorable, and CLEAN. My appointment was with one of the owners, Kemberly. She was super friendly and made me feel totally welcome in the shop. It was such a pleasant customer service experience. I got my hair shampooed and my eyebrows waxed all at once, which was really convenient. As for the cut, she chopped off five inches of my lanky quarantine locks, framed my face, and gave me layers to die for. She blow-dryed it at the end and gave me some beautiful, bouncy waves. I was SO beyond satisfied, and I'm absolutely sure that this will be my forever salon.

Beware of their policies. I have been going to this salon…read morefor approximately a year, without incident. This week, there was a miscommunication about an appointment that I made and I discovered there is no relationship or respect based on customer loyalty. I made an appointment online for two services that I normally get with my regular stylist. I thought the form was confusing and didn't see her name but wrote it in the comments that I wanted her to do my hair, so that it was clear. When I got there, my stylist wasn't there; there was another stylist that I'd never seen before. For obvious reasons I didn't want the stylist I didn't know to work on me. That's when the worm turned. Everything became my fault. You can ONLY schedule color by phone or email ( I didn't know, I'd been scheduling in person after appointments ). They disregarded my note in the online request for a reason unclear to me, so my request was ignored. Not letting the unknown person work on me, for them, equalled a cancellation. They did not accept any responsibility for their requirements being unclear or that it was a misunderstanding, not a disregard for their business, 'because you signed the paper that explained the policy". I've done business with businesses like this with 'gotcha clauses' but never expected a hair salon to do that. Cancellation policies are pretty common these days, but not like theirs. 'Their cancellation policy is to take ALL of your appointment money, In my case it was $190.00. Lesson learned.
