Gosh I can't recommend this salon and specifically Jordy enough!! I have very curly hair and have only recently really gotten the hang of how to care for it. Every time I've come to see Jordy, I am more confident in the quality and care of my hair. They've been my stylist for over 2 years. They are incredibly talented and dedicated to their work. They're always going to seminars to keep up with the latest hair products for curly hair. It's so nice to know that stylists like Jordy are so dedicated to hair that is known for being complicated, or "too much". Jordy and I have played around with color and different cuts. I am so appreciative to have a stylist I trust. You really get what you pay for here. I love coming in on a Sunday morning to see Jordy. i got the absolute worst haircut of my life here. i will never be coming back and tell everyone i know to avoid this place at all costs. it's been over a month and my hair still looks absolutely rancid and the worst part is that i paid for it. this was the first time i ever considered running out the door and not paying. i honestly feel like i would have looked better if she had just buzzed my entire head. i showed her a picture and she basically gave me a bowl cut. even an older lady around 50-60 said that she did it completely wrong and told me what she should have done instead, and it's literally a newer style haircut. thanks for making this experience unforgettable in the worst way. i won't be able to get a job or go out for a few months due to this. read more

Twisted Scissors is a true gem. I used to go there many years ago before moving away and had the pleasure of returning yesterday to prep for my sister's wedding. I was able to reunite with the amazing Amber and met some new people as well. Alex did my hair and my 4-year-old daughter's and she was just phenomenal. My daughter's hair was perfection (as was mine) and she spent tons of time with her when she was done just chatting it up, even showing her the backyard of the salon. My daughter's first experience getting her hair done could not have gone better. Like I said, I had not been to a Twisted Scissors salon in years and it was like I was there yesterday. Another one of the owners even remember me and we were able to catch up a bit. Bottom line...we already have plans to be back this summer to get some fun colors in our hair. Emily dyed and styled my virgin red hair. I LOVE IT - coming from a mom of a toddler who has been scared to get my hair cut since my last experience during my 3rd trimester. So math wise, that's a long mother forking time. I've been told my whole life not to dye my hair because it's so pretty blah blah. But I'm 37, a mom, and I wanted a purple balayage! Well Emily really walked me through everything since I had no idea what was going to happen just a vague idea from researching and she was so great helping me make final decisions and simple finishing touches that really made a difference in the end result. I just forking love it. And so does everyone else. My friends and family, even family who said don't do it. Coworkers and random people in restaurants and shops. A woman in an elevator told me she loved it and it looked so natural! It's like a perfect electric purple against my red hair and it does look weirdly natural. So anyway. Can't wait to go back for a refresh when it's time for something new. But I'm gonna keep loving this for a while. I was a walk-in customer, and the next available stylist was Sarah. She was extremely precise and careful with everything: combing through my tangled, split-end-ed hair, washing my hair and making sure not to mess up my makeup, parting my hair directly in the center for an even cut, trimming my hair, and thoroughly blow-drying my hair on a medium heat. I was happy with the result. The salon itself has a fun vibe and design scheme. Tattoo designs, retro curling irons, and bright colors decorate the building. And many of the stylists themselves have brightly-colored hair and tattoos. There is coffee and water available, and two, small waiting nooks available with retro seating. There is also a restroom available inside. I chose this place through Yelp reviews -- I was looking for an affordable haircut in the area. My wash, trim (of maybe 3 inches of split ends), and dry(/ basic styling) was $51. Because of the extreme focus and care Sarah put into everything, I do feel it was worth it. read more

Four years ago I stumbled upon Twisted Scissors as it was within walking distance from my apartment. Sarah has been my hair guru ever since. She moved to Little Sister today and I had to follow her, even if it means a bit of a drive. She's a special effects artist and a style maven. The decor is Ç'est Magnifique! The chandeliers are my favorite. One is perched perfectly in front of the wash sink and I was mesmerized by its sparkle. Just like its older sister, the sitting area is filled with inviting, funky chairs with a mélange of fabrics. Complimentary beer, wine, tea, and coffee haven't changed. There's a new portrait area with appropriate lighting and a monochromatic background for your social media picture glory. Come see Sarah and let her work her hair magic. read more

Both locations are amazing!!! I moved here from SF and had no idea where to go to get my hair done. I've tried 4 different salons and just never liked my cuts/color. I have fine thin hair so it's been challenging. I have been seeing Sarah A for quite a few years now. I followed her from the main location over to this one. I still love her work as much as when we first started working together. She gives every hair cut, color, and style all of her attention and love- doesn't matter if you're going all black or a rainbow head- she'll give you her best. The new shop is also super cute and relaxed. There's a little "bar" to get water, coffee, tea etc and it's a big open room so you don't feel claustrophobic. You can feel confident in the shop staff, in the stylists, and in the products and dyes the stylists use in your hair. This was my first time at this hair salon and I had read and heard great things. I wanted a cool, modern haircut and was open to suggestions and figured if I wanted a cool haircut, I was in good hands. Unfortunately after the haircut I received, I never want to go back again. I went in with long hair that reached my lower back and I wanted to cut it very short and donate it. I didn't have a specific haircut in mind but I told the stylist I was growing my bangs out and that my only condition was that she please NOT give me the "Can I speak to your manager haircut" (I even showed her pictures while I begged her not to make me look like that). I don't mind the extremely short length, because I wanted a big chop. However, I ended up looking like a combination of the aforementioned suburban mom bob and Coconut Head from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. The back of my hair is extremely short and the front is longer and pointed and it's very big and mushroom shaped at the top. It's an awful haircut that is very outdated, unflattering for my face shape (which I asked her to keep in mind), and it aged me horribly. I paid the hefty price for my haircut and when I got into my car, I burst into tears and practically cried all the way home. That is how much I hate my haircut. I seriously ended up looking exactly how I begged her not to make me look. Now my hair is too short to pull into a pony tail and if I clip it back, it's still too big at the top. It's absolutely ridiculous and embarrassing and I am dreading going to work tomorrow because my haircut is so bad. I might as well have gone to any salon and gotten an unflattering, generic bob and I have to find a way to hide it for work tomorrow morning. read more

I usually don't write reviews but I had to write about my experience here. I gave this place a fair shot, first time I went in there hair came out nothing like what I wanted it to be but I was trying to be patient and didn't want to go platinum blonde from light brown right away. I went there again to give it another shot hoping that this time around I could get the look I was looking for but omg was I wrong! First off my hair is unevenly bleached so the color didn't grab on the same in different spots nor is it the level that it should be to achieve the color I wanted. Secondly, I didn't get the color I wanted at all I asked for a pastel pink came out with a neon pink so unflattering and totally not what I was looking for. Last but not least my hair is ORANGE yes you heard that right ORANGE!!!! I paid around 300 dollars just to have to try and fix my own hair and dye it purple to try masking all the orange! If I could give this spot 0 stars I would, it's crazy to charge that much when clearly they don't know what they're doing! & to reply to the business owner I didn't need corrective hair color I came in with light brown virgin hair please stop trying to excuse your horrible service and steep prices! read more

THEY HAVE SHAMPOO SINKS THAT DON'T HURT YOUR NECK!!! The thing I hate most about haircuts is having my neck hyperextended over a shampoo bowl. Today I tried Little Sister because it is so much closer to my house than Twisted Scissors, and when Sarah warned me that the shampoo bowls were a bit different, I could not have been more thrilled! They have adjustable heights, so you get to remain more upright and more comfortable! Haircut was great, as I've come to expect from Twisted Scissors. read more

My daughter introduced me to the Twisted Scissors Logan Square location a couple of years ago. I found the atmosphere/vibe very inviting and attentive. As a middle-aged person I was worried that there might be the impression that I was "out of my element" in terms of openness to try new things and keep my look more modern (without looking like I was trying to hard.) But my stylists were always genuinely thoughtful and able to give a professional and critical opinion to the choices I was making. I found each one to be very professional and skilled. If I didn't like the way a look was going they definitely took time to help adjust to meet my need. I could even come back if after a day it it didn't fall the way I wanted it to after a professional style. When they moved next door to my resale shop I was more than thrilled! Not only for the convenience of having my salon right there I was excited for the kind of friendly and energetic contribution they make to the growth of our neighborhood. The new place looks amazing and I love their commitment to making new use out of older material. It gives renewed life to things that may have been overlooked. Again, the staff is amazingly helpful, cheerful and skilled. I have recommended them to my friends and colleagues and will continue to do so. I saw good reviews and called to be matched with someone who could cut a pixie well and made an appointment in advance. When I got there they said my appointment was with a different name but I just went with it. I showed pictures of what I wanted, including the back. The front turned out ok but the back is just embarrassing. Like I don't know if she knew she messed up and just didn't tell me and it kept getting shorter as she tried to even it or this was what she meant to do or if she was just unaware. It's too short in the back and there's like holes in it. Not tapered well. I've had pixies before I know they don't have to look like this. Now I have to wait for my hair to grow again to look decent. I was really excited to cut it but now I'm really disappointed. I kind of wanted to cry. If she didn't know how to do pixies I wish she would have said so and I could have just gotten a trim. read more

Dani was my stylist/colorist two weeks ago for a balayage. My hair was hardly color treated before and I have quite dark hair, so I knew it would be a challenge to color. My mother is also a veteran hairstylist of 30+ years, so I am a little more educated on the workings of a hair salon having grown up around several salons. Having said, I can confidently say that Dani is a professional and SMART stylist. She understands her art and is quite intentional in her practice.
