I have been eating at Twigs for 25 years. It was one of my favorite restaurants. Our experience last night was WAY off. Our server was amazing, our wine and salads were great. Our food was not up to par. The tuna was way too spicy (not eatable) and the trout (which is usually my favorite) had no flavor at all. Everyone has an off night and I totally get that BUT the worst part is when I called and tried to talk to the manager about it; she completely blew me off. She told me she had a hard time believing me because not one other customer had complained about their food. She also said I should have told her. We did tell our server. I didn't want compensation or anything, I simply wanted her to know because it wasn't their typical. She apparently is not interested in repeat customers. By the way this is the first google review I've ever done of this nature. Typically, a manager is interested in the verbal feedback of a customer. Her attitude with me last night squelched our desire to ever go back. (FYI.... based on our conversation last night: if you have an oyster allergy you need to tell them. Most of their dishes are cross contaminated because, in their words: "Due to a small kitchen, items are stored together and everything is fried in the same grease, including the fried green tomatoes.") Twigs consistently provides delicious meals! The Thursday night bar filet is to die for! The steaks are always cooked perfectly. There was only one server in the bar area, but she did an amazing job if keeping all the balls in the air. This is more of an adult type of restaurant, with a cozy mountain vibe. read more

Great atmosphere and service. However, I was disappointed in the sautéed Mountain Rainbow Trout, it was very mushy. It did not have a nice sautéed texture with the abundant flavor of the capers. Excellent Blowing Rock restaurant. The place is always full, so book a reservation well in advance. We were seating promptly and had a pre-dinner cocktail, excellent martini. Service by John was OUTSTANDING!! He had some good suggestions on the menu. Started with the Fried Green Tomatoes - a very Southern tradition; excellent. I went with the Strip special, prepared to perfection. She had the Rainbow Trout - melt in your mouth good. Portions are very nice - a good value for your $$$$. Let me start that the food was excellent. It was the service that needs addressing. Here are the highlights. - called a week in advance to make a reservation but had to leave a message since no one answered. Wasn't able to call back to confirm for a few days and when I did found out they did not make the reservation. But said they could get me in 15 minutes earlier. Really! what difference would 15 minutes make. - Asked to order their famous rainbow trout but was told they didn't have any. Why not share this when we were looking at the menu? Told our waiter I would need to look at the menu again. I ordered another item and we waited for dinner. Our waiter started taking orders for the table next to us when we overheard him telling them about the specials. He never mentioned any specials to us. Particularly that they had another fish option. When we asked why he didn't tell us about the specials, rather than apologize he just said "when it gets busy I just get what people what they know they want." Huh? - Last time we saw our server. - Food came and was dumped unceremoniously by a server who took off without asking if we needed anything else. After tasting we felt it needed some salt. I had to go to the kitchen to get some as no one stopped at our table. - Had to flag someone down to get our bill and then again to pay. - On the way out asked the receptionist if the owner was there. "No, he was in this afternoon but he's not around". No - Can I help with anything? Would you like to speak with the manager? Unlikely to go back. Was not an inexpensive evening and just felt the service did not justify the prices. We are low maintenance but found this lack of service really at odds with the kind of restaurant they want to be. read more

First off, the service was excellent. The food however, was lacking. I had the Valentine's special ribeye and potato. The ribeye was at least 1/2 fat and gristle and couldn't have been better than a select grade. The medium rare was purple. The potato came out cooked and whole....Not cut/opened, no condiments, just a plain baked potato straight from the oven. The whole experience was just strange for a special meal. read more

What a magical place...the food and service are awesome. You can tell that this is a hot spot for locals. My friend and I sat at the bar as we waited for our table to be ready. We enjoyed the vibe at the bar so much that we canceled the table and stayed at the bar. They had two specials, one was grouper and the other was steak. We got both and shared...everything was seasoned well and very fresh and tasty. They have a full bar and wonderful friendly bartenders, Chelsea and Brian. I paid 50$ for the ribeye special. I asked for the Demi glaze to be put on the side. When it arrived the glaze was not on the side. I asked the waitress to get me the glaze. She returned several minutes later and said that the chef said no ...... unbelievable !!! I paid for it. Now the chef is deciding that I cannot get it on the side. When I asked further the waitress expressed that the chef might yell at her. I'm shocked!! I would like to talk to someone in management but when I left there was nobody at the door or hostess station. Be alert - the chef is deciding what you can have for the money you pay. We arrived to Banner Elk/Blowing Rock area on Wednesday (three days ago). We had not been to North Carolina nor this mountain area, so were a little nervous about where to dine. I saw a ton of great reviews, plus got recommendations in a Facebook group to check out Twigs. We tend to be picky eaters in terms of finding fresh and good quality food. I reserved about a month prior at Twigs and hope for the best. I will say that Twigs did not disappoint in the ambiance, food taste and quality. They had a kids menu (that even included filet mignon), so my daughters were able to eat food portioned for them. I ordered a curry mango soup which was my favorite- very fresh and flavorful. I am from Miami, so I enjoy international flavors and sometimes don't expect to find them in other parts of the US. This was delicious! I also ordered the Peached BBQ Duck Tenders, which was divine. The sauce was fruity but also warm and the meat extremely tender without the usual greasy fast you find in duck dishes. My husband ordered a special which was a steak (forgot the cut) with a balsamic reduction sauce and Brussels sprouts. It was an enormous steak and I didn't think my husband-the world's most discerning eater lol- wouldn't finish it, but he did and he was really impressed. I don't know about how Twigs sources ingredients and foods, but I am almost sure there is a very talented chef behind their amazing menu. The ambiance was also cozy, and very cute in the way they tie their Twigs name with the wood/twigs decor. The only drawback was the wait time. We were attended at the exact time of our reservation, which I appreciated. The food did take about 1 hour to come out. It was the day before Thanksgiving and I'm sure the small town restaurant was swamped with out of town red, so I don't really count it against them given that they delivered. The cost was also reasonable given that we had appetizers and 4 dishes. Because of Helene, and no power at our house, we checked into the Village Inn next-door to Twigs. We wanted to eat at the restaurant but were informed that we could not bring our dog because the patio had leaves everywhere. So we ordered two entrées, the wild salmon, and the sautéed trout for pick up. Both entrées were delicious. It's almost impossible to get wild salmon at a restaurant so was very excited. The risotto side and the trout side were also excellent. But this review is not only about the food but about how the staff there is so unhelpful and does not really go out of their way to help people who have just lost their homes or power. They get an F for compassion. The person (male) who took the order was rude and full of himself. On the menu, it plainly states that they will make any dish vegan or vegetarian or gluten-free. Yet when my husband who is diabetic, asked if they could cook the salmon without the brown sugar glaze he was told no they could not!! how hard would it have been to take a piece of salmon and have what is supposed to be a first class chef just sauté it? I guess it would be too hard. So he settled for the trout and I had the salmon, which was not at all sweet which leads me to believe that at the end the chef did just sauté a piece of salmon. The other thing I had a problem with was I love fried green tomatoes and I order them whenever I am in a restaurant that makes this delicious dish. They usually always serve the dip on the side. When I looked on the menu and saw that bacon jam came with this dish and we don't eat pork, I asked the person who was taking my order if they could just not give me the bacon jam and just give me the fried green tomatoes. Oh no, this is too difficult. Because apparently they serve you fried green tomatoes with the jam on top instead of on the side!!!! I found this pretty preposterous, because even those people that will eat bacon jam don't necessarily want it just piled on top of the fried green tomatoes, but most people prefer to dip the fried green tomatoes themselves. So, even though the menu states they can make any dish vegan or vegetarian or gluten-free, apparently they cannot put bacon jam on the side or not give it to you at all???? Anyway, I found the behavior of the staff pretty uncompassionate, and even though our meals were good, we will not return nor recommend this restaurant. If the management of this restaurant really cares, they can always reach out to me to discuss this. I gave two stars for the food and would have given five if the restaurant staff cared about making customers happy read more

The food was splendid, and the server was very friendly when she was actually at our table! my partner and i had a reservation, and we were even sitting directly next to the kitchen. our appetizer course was swift and delectable, and our salads came out in a timely manner. our main courses, a salmon and ribeye, took the bulk of our time there to come out. after sitting, and waiting until my appetite had left, i had to wait another 5 minutes for a togo box (that i had to flag down another server to ask for). i understand it was her first day, but it was so sad to see her put so much effort into her other tables while she ignored us :( read more

We took a Miami friend for his birthday to Twigs. It was absolutely fantastic. From the food to the service to value for the price, this place is terrific! When we first pulled in, the parking lot was filled, early-ish on a Saturday night. I thought: wow, with all the restaurants in this heavily touristed town, this many cars in one place is a good sign. It was a VERY good sign of what was to come. Most of the staff are very on-the-ball young students from local Appalachian State. Without exception, they were smart, fun to talk to, and the food was pretty incredible to boot! The manager even stopped upon the way out to be sure we had a good time and enjoyed the food & service. This place combined small-town Southern hospitality with huge-metropolis level great food. First the food: we started out with a variety of appetizers, including fried green tomatoes, crab cakes, Brussels sprouts and little pieces of marinated duck. My group of 3 shared all 4 appetizers. The fried green tomatoes are a Deep South specialty and these folks really did them well. Crab cakes were crispy on outside, tender on inside and cooked to perfection. My tomato bisque was really amazing, just the right blend of finely pureed tomatoes and spices. Tomato and mozzarella salad had heirloom tomatoes and very fresh mozzarella. Please note: appetizers are almost entree size, we between the three of us we had a box and a half of food for lunch the next day. Next the service: we had an incredibly sweet waiter who told us he had just finished training. Not only was he charming and efficient, we all talked a little about history. Looking for an exceptional meal but not wanting to break the bank, we sat at the bar and enjoyed a very pleasurable dining experience. My Ahi Tuna, slightly seared and rare as requested, with Asian slaw, and pan fried cornbread, exceeded all expectations. I've paid much more for a less appetizing version of this dish. My wife opted for the Horseradish encrusted Salmon, with Tempura fried zucchini, and smashed new potatoes. Perfect ! And the zucchini? Never a big zucchini fan, this preparation has changed my mind ! Went here on a Sunday, 55 minutes before close (still plenty of people dining, and live entertainment on the porch). After waiting 5 minutes to even be acknowledged, we were told she didn't think she could seat us, "the kitchen is getting ready to close" and "everyone is just going to finish with the tables they have". We ate here tonight as we are visiting my husband's uncle. It is a favorite of his (he is a local and knows the BEST places). It was a lot if fun-we sat in the bar! We got there just after 5pm because it is so popular and so delicious that it gets busy fast- reservations recommended . I have to eat gluten free, so the precious young man who helped us was SO wonderful and conscientious to make sure my selections were indeed gf! He dutifully asked if it was an allergy or-I assured him that I am not celiac and relief that washed over his face was as if he were my own son. We used Open Table to make a reservation for hubby's 50+ birthday - seated at a large 2 top table; it was loud and hard to hear each other, so I moved next to him but was in the aisle- he also had a cast on his leg. It was awkward, next time the hostess should look at the people they are seating, or spread out parties to cut down on noise. Drink- Long Island IceT; very well mixed, not too sour or sweet. Salad- I had the special kale with pecans and freshly cut apples/ very good and big enough to share. The dressing was amazing. Soup- hubby had tomato and said it was really good. Entree- Filet Mignon; seared but raw in center; the potatoes and reduction were great. We would of sent it back but we felt like we were in the way because of seating. Salmon- overly seasoned and salty, plus it tasted fishy; the green onion risotto was amazing- creamy with bits of crunchy green onions. Key Lime pie- perhaps the best I ever had. Creme Brûlée- very good, the middle could of been warmer but the top was perfect. Coffee- French press pot-enough to share. It was good. Next time we will try the bar menu. read more

Twigs webpage is very deceiving. It is beautifully designed and gives the impression of a relaxed but sophisticated ambience. However the atmosphere is that of a noisy diner. Our waiter was inattentive; we had to ask for bread twice and we only had full water glasses because we caught the eye of another server with a water pitcher. The peach bbq'd duck tenders with goat cheese crumbles were inedible. The peach was over-sweet, the breadcrumbs overcooked, heavy and tough and the duck could not be tasted. We sent it back and the waiter, Jordan, volunteered to take it off the bill. That was not done and we had to ask to have it removed. There was no wine list given to us. I asked for the choices of Prosecco and was told there was only one. Our entrees were good however, the trout fresh out of the pan and light and my husband enjoyed his pasta.
