Not much beats some green beer, scotch eggs and Irish music on St Patty's in an Irish pub in downtown Blowing Rock. Great selection of beers, drinks, regular food items and of course Irish food at this fun spot right on Main St. I had an Irish ale turned green that was cold one tasty. They even turned my wife's cider green which was a nice addition to the day's celebration. The scotch eggs were delicious. Hard boiled eggs wrapped in flavorful sausage that are baked and then served chilled. The dressing and dipping sauce went perfectly with the dish. Really a fun spot all around with great service, fun and hip atmosphere whether it's St. Patrick's Day or not. We'll be back! read more

Sat outside on the patio with a group of 4 adults, 2 little kids, and a baby. All the food was tasty and they were accommodating to a pick and choose ingredients basically request for the 2 little kids. Staff was helpful. Nice umbrellas and ample space out to stash our wagon off to the side. Wagons or strollers would not be recommended inside. read more

We happened upon the Six Pence Pub on our stop in Blowing Rock. Everything was great from the food to the service to management. Portions were generous. A group of us had an early dinner here and I have to say everyone's dish was absolutely wonderful with large portions! I ordered the fish and chips which was reasonably priced given how much I received in the order. See the pic. The fish consisted of 3 large pieces of fish! The picture doesn't do it justice. I had leftovers for the next day. My husband ordered the salmon with wild rice and collard greens. He said the salmon and rice were amazing. The collard greens were what you might expect for collard greens but still good and healthy. :-) This was one of our best meals while in Blowing Rock. You don't want to miss this place. read more

Stopped by for lunch. Was hesitant due to some reviews. But really wanted fish and chips and they were EXCELLENT!!! 3 very well seasoned and plump pieces of cod and a huge side a fries. No way could I eat it all. My husband ate one of the pieces of fish and we left most of the fries. Husband had sandwich. Was too thickly cut for my taste but he liked it. However one half had only 1 piece of corned beef and the other half had most of the meat. So they need to pay more attention to detail with the Reuben sandwich. Saw another reviewer that made a similar comment. Husband thought they should be more generous overall with the meat. He had homemade chips. They were very crispy and excellent. In my opinion, the fish and chips was overpriced ($30). I purchased clothing from a boutique down the street afterwards and she mentioned we should have been give half price on the fish on Wednesdays. Husband checked website and it was for dinner only. We were there around 2:30. When seating us outside, the hostess mentioned she would return with napkins and utensils but never did. Long-time customer, but the last two visits have been very disappointing. The quality of the food seems to have gone downhill while the prices have increased. I was especially disappointed with my Reuben yesterday. Half of my sandwich had only one small piece of meat, and the other half was missing most of the other ingredients and had fatty meat that was difficult to eat. I was so surprised that I even pointed it out to the waitress. The staff has always been great, but unfortunately the kitchen quality does not seem to be what it used to be. We used to recommend this place to so many friends, but unfortunately we no longer feel confident doing so. With so many other great options available, the food no longer feels worth the price. Kudos to our very helpful waitress Magali for clearly stating all their fried foods were fried in peanut oil after I mentioned my peanut allergy! My chicken salad sandwich on pumpernickel with cottage cheese on the side was an excellent, well-informed lunch! She was also great about bringing my friend fountain Coca-Cola with no ice after a brief misunderstanding. Would love to come again. We were up in the mountains on a misty day, and needed lunch as we headed back to Charlotte. A lot of places were busy, even for late lunch, but we were intrigued and then glad we stopped. I had the Farmer's lunch with a delicious buffalo chicken soup, cheddar cheese, fresh green salad, and bread. The kids liked their chicken, but also stealing my cheese and bread. I definitely recommend this amazing pub! We stumbled upon it as we were shopping downtown and needed food! They said it would be a 30 min wait but they got us seated in about 15 min. The server was super cutie and funny. He did a wonderful job and was cracking jokes the whole time. The food was spectacular. The fried pickles - WOW! Some of the best I've ever had. Super crispy and fried to perfection. I LOVED my half Caesar salad and half turkey sandwich. The croutons on the salad tasted homemade and were so yummy. And the sandwich was perfect. I ordered it on wheat, with extra mayo and all the works. This included lettuce, tomato, and onion, which was a whole slice!!!! Perfect for an onion lover like myself. I added a slice of provolone and lemme tell you - this sandwich was perfect! My friends raved over both the regular fries and sweet potato fries. They also loved their grilled cheeses. Another friend ordered the fish and chips and said it was delicious. It was a HUGE portion! The server later told us that next time we could order a smaller portion. Good to know for future reference in case you're traveling and don't want to waste or carry leftovers. There were also many drink options. I ordered a 16 oz blue moon, but they also offered a 20 oz. We did not enjoy our food. The French onion soup was fine, beef sandwich was okay, but the salad we had was poor. I would've sent it back but we were with friends who invited us so I was being polite for their sake. The lettuce was old, brown edges, I didn't dare eat it. I won't be back. My absolute favorite is the Fish and Chips (Fries) with a Kilkenny Red. The food is a really healthy portion with 3 pieces of Cod that are breaded and delicious- always taste like it was just caught. I have been spending time at Six Pence in Blowing Rock for the greater part of twenty years. The 'dark bar' vibe is my favorite. Not sports bar, nor 'coffee house' feel. For me...it is a dark bar. Love it! The Covid Era tested us all, but through all the madness and mayhem, they were there for us all in great times of need. Indeed, the last business I went to, before the lockdowns, was Six Pence. They were open 'till the last minute. They were, and are, always there for us. Fast forward five years, and now we are blessed to have Chris and Daniel as bartenders. The perfect bartenders don't just get your bizarre drink orders correct, they also know how to speak to people...of all kinds. Communication is so my bag, baby. And Chris and Daniel know how to handle that, and with such grace, even in a mad lunch or dinner rush. I don't know how they do it, yet here they are. So, let us all raise our glasses to those we have lost, and let us show a big round of applause to our bartenders at Six Pence, for they are the therapists we may not deserve...but that we are gifted with nontheless. We typically eat here every time we visit Blowing Rock, which is once or twice a year and generally enjoy it there. Had a few missteps this time: 1. Cheeseburger came with no cheese. "oh you didn't ask for cheese". We ordered a CHEESEburger. 2. Asked for mustard among other things on the burger; got honey mustard. 3. Ordered decaf coffee for dessert-what came was thick and tasted burned. Couldn't drink it. 4. Had a mixed drink on our bill-we did not order drinks. On the plus side, the burger was very tasty, and we did not have to wait long to be seated. I guess it was just an off night. read more

On a recent visit to Blowing Rock, we had the opportunity to have dinner at Six Pence Pub. The Pub is on the small side but the staff were turning tables quickly. It's your standard Pub setting with a bar area, inside eating area and an outdoor area. It's dark and with the interior design, it certainly has that British Pub vibe. Staff were pleasant, courteous and attentive. As busy as they were, the food was at our table within ten minutes of ordering. I had the Ruben Sandwich and my wife had the Fish and Chips. For the price of the sandwich, I was expecting a little more corned beef. I had the potato salad which was awesome. It had to be in the top ten I've ever had. I would highly suggest if potato salad is in your palette. The fish appeared to be Cod. It was a tasty, non fishy, white fish planks. The chips were not standard British fair. They were more of a cross between a potato chip and round fry. They were delicious. The Prices are a little high but would definitely go again. read more

We were in town on the Fourth of July and wanted a quick bite for lunch. Our timing was great and we got a two-top right before it got crazy busy with long waits. As a side note, some people are just downright rude when they walk in to busy restaurants and expect to be seated right away -- not gonna happen. We got a shepherd's pie and a salmon BLT and my wife decided to finish it off with an Irish coffee. The food was tasty and filling, and our waiter apologize that they didn't have whipped cream for the Irish coffee. As for ambiance, they really go for the British vibe all around, including several banners of newly crowned King Charles. It's been 7 years since we visited Blowing Rock. The quaint little historic town is still as lovely as I remembered. We tried a couple of new-to-us restaurants this time around. After driving about seven hours from the D.C. area, we arrived into town just in time for dinner. Right around the corner of our hotel was the Six Pence Pub. It was the perfect night to be sitting in their outside patio and watch passersby including a dog with a rainbow tutu and have a wonderful meal. I ordered the Atlantic Salmon and my partner got the Fish and Chips (as you do in a pub). I was asked how I wanted my 0salmon. Never, and I should put that in caps, NEVER, has any restaurant asked me how do I want my salmon cooked. My first response was not dry as that is what happens quite often. But I finally managed to say medium and my fish came out just perfect. I did substitute the rice with an extra portion of the veggies. The fish and sweet potato fries were also prepared as expected. The large portion was also unexpected. We also tried the Blowing Rock Brewery's Mountain Berry Hard Seltzer from the pub menu. If you like fruity, this was very good. We always like to try local drinks. We liked it so much that we asked where can we get it. To our surprise, the waiter said just behind the restaurant. LOL. So after dinner we strolled around to the block (and we definitely needed to walk off our fabulous dinner) and there was the Blowing Rock Brewery and Ale House. Looks like we could have gotten dinner here as well. You will find a refrigerator with quite a few selection of hard seltzers and beer. We got our six pack and took it back to the hotel. Wow this spot in Blowing Rock is super. Our awesome bartender was Lindsay, she is our new favorite Blowing Rockian'. She was on point with drink provisions and abc regulations but most of all helped us feel cozy and welcome to this warm spot. I had the scotch eggs which were perfection, in fourths, and very beautifully presented (and had a cool tangy sauce with it). The girlfriend had mac and cheese bites and was in pure splendor. Ooh! Under Lindsays recommendation a pour of Carra rosé proseccoooooo. This was the hit, sip up, have three. The people here were friendly and we chatted with them a bunch. Great vibes here. Good food for lunch! We had a quick lunch inside and managed to eat and drink in one hour. They have gluten free hard cider and options for your meal too. I had a salmon sandwich and it was amazing. Service is good and they're busy but helpful. Parking is not easy in BR so park and walk to the restaurant. read more

The next day talked to a local merchant who said he had the same meal the previous Thursday and had the same experience. When I returned home on September 30th I reported my experience to the tri-county Health Department and hope they check out the place to help insure public safety. This is a cool place food is good. I gave three stars because everytime I sit at the bar I get the worst service. Was in there last night and there were maybe 4 people at the bar and it took forever to get a drink. Bartender was more interested in talking with someone at the other end of the bar. Took forever to get the bill and even longer for him to collect it. I feel bad saying this because he actually seemed like a super nice guy but man you gotta step it up. read more
