Vinyl records!
Eric G.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, turntablism, the art of mixing and scratching ACTUAL VINYL RECORDS, is alive and well! This quaint little record shop has a nice selection of vintage records to choose from. The atmosphere is light and welcoming with aesthetic nods to the DJ culture. I popped in for the scratchpadsac open turntable event, where local DJs and wannabees can get on the 1s and 2s and learn, practice or show their skills. The vibe was completely relaxed and everyone there was welcoming and friendly. I even took a turn on the wheels of steel and tried to do a little scratching. My already substantial respect for DJs only increased as I tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to mimic some of the basic techniques. Regardless, I got lots of encouragement from the more experienced people there and I great time was had by all. They keep a couple sets of turntables in place at all time so you can walk in and get your flicka flicka fix whenever they are open. If you want to learn, practice your skills or just hang out with your fellow DJs, this is the place to be. I will definitely be back!

Compared to most of the record stores in Sacramento, Twelves Wax has to be one of my favorites because their selection stands out to me the most. You can find a lot of familiar rap and R&B that we grew up with along with some dance tracks. Plus, the prices aren't bad and they're always so friendly here! They also added a new kitty to their family! :)

First time visiting this establishment for Record Store Day. They had the Pearl Jam record I was hoping to buy. Score! Shop was tidy and not a madhouse like some of the others on this day. Blink and you might miss this place from the street but it's definitely worth checking out. I will definitely be back to browse through their selections.

So stoked on this spot to open up in oak park. It's rare you can find a spot like this anymore, great prices on records, new and used and awesome selection of hip hop, electronic, punk, soul and reggae! New stock on the floor every week, cool atmosphere and great staff. I always find some gems every time I visit.

Twelves wax is hands down my favorite record store in Sacramento. The selection is insane with anything from classic funk, Hip-hop, and R&B plus hard-to-find beat culture gems from the likes of Stro Elliot, Madlib, Jake One, Mndsgn, and J. DILLA. The vinyl is appropriately priced and I'm always sure to find heat in the discount bends. Twelves Wax is a Sacramento staple that oozes in culture and style, 5 stars are truly not enough. 10 out of 10!!

Augie tries his best to provide that and implemented a new system this year to try and make it a better experience. It seems this individual was not happy because it did not benefit them. If the rules were confusing or not clear, customers are generally encouraged to call and ask questions. Also, when leaving a complaint, what nesscessity is it to state your ethnicity? What does that have to do with rules that are enforced to everyone. Augie is a pleasant and kind person and doesn't discount people because of music genre tastes, education, or race. This negative review is undeserved. You still had the chance to have 5 guaranteed picks. More then most other places. I was in line as well, but just behind the first 10 people. If you wanted more you could go back in and try your luck with everyone else. You were waiting since 8am? Try waiting from 12am if you want to try to make sure you get an album you want. I've done that. Rocket Records, Augie and the whole family are great and I'll always stand behind that. They try their best to provide a welcoming shopping experience.

This takes me to a place that takes you back to simpler times from a musical perspective and this is none other than "MediumRare Records". Located at the WAL (Warehouse Artist Lofts) Public Market at the 11th and R St's in Downtown Sacramento, this small business has been in operation dating back to 2015. Hours of business here are 11am-5pm seven days a week. Since this business is in a large indoor public market, many of the neighboring businesses also have very similar hours of operation. What I particularly and thoroughly enjoy about this place is that they focus primarily on vinyl records. This includes a ton of genres including blues, soul, jazz, R&B, classic rock, the British invasion, big band, swing, classical, and much more. Many of the standard records are around the $15-25 range while they offer deep discounts on other records for less than $5. In addition, this place also offers quite a few CD's as well. I also like how this business focuses on major well-known artists/groups such as Elvis Presley and The Beatles as there are dedicated sections displaying their album art and other collectibles. I do want to point out that for the non-musical kind, this place also carries a neat (yet small) assortment of books and other vintage memorabilia. I also wanted to add that they buy, sell, and trade various forms of music (mainly records) as long as it is near-new condition. The service here was above average as I spent at least 30 minutes browsing the aisles of their diverse and unique selection. All in all, "MediumRare Records" is a must-visit place if you're a huge fan of vintage music as myself. Since I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was always into the huge music stores such as "Amoeba" and "Rasputin". So for Sacramento to offer this is a big plus. With a nice selection, decent prices, and a great area in a cozy public market, I am giving this small business an above average four stars.

If you're into punk / metal / hardcore, they have a great selection, but I've also picked up some good hip-hop, jazz, folk, and country stuff here, too. The dude that works behind the counter is super friendly, chatty, and seems to genuinely appreciate people being there. The sign even says "Friendliest Record Store." I'll be honest - as a former record store employee with a terrible attitude that kind of put me off at first. But as I've gotten older and less unruly, it was appreciated when I was able to wax nostalgic about wax with him. Good selection of 7"s, too - and if you look at their website you can virtually check what's in stop before hitting them up. Oh, and they have sales - often! - that are noted on their Instagram page. Need more shops like this. Need more people to support shops like this. I'm a fan.

You can spend all day in there chatting about music and the way recording and distribution has changed over the years. Great place. I would stop by even if you don't have a record player or tape player. The nostalgia, the walk down memory lane when you Spin a record on your palms or stick your finger in a cd. Man I feel old. But my 13yr old gets me to Phono Select all the time. There is something for everyone.

The owner is very passionate about music and you can tell it from talking to him. He is friendly, was chatting with all the different customers about what they picked, and even gives good suggestions! I bought a record from a band I had never heard of before (Fox Medicine). They were in the metal section but it was cute and bright pink. I looked them up quickly and listened to a couple songs and told myself I had to get that record. The owner was chatting with me about if I liked them or not and I was honest about literally just discovering them. He gave me one of their posters free of charge! They had just performed at his store and so he had a few left. I didn't realize he was giving it to me until we were leaving, I thought he was just showing me the poster. That absolutely made my day once I realized he was just giving it to me. The variety in this store is amazing with loads of vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and even music equipment! Prices are very fair, and everything is properly labeled. Instead of me having to get my hopes up inspect the record, the front usually says the condition, pressing, if it's colored, etc. I don't have to waste my time inspecting it myself, as the staff has already done the leg work. They even have a bargain bin (wall) with great deals! Down on the floor was a box that had cheap project vinyl too. When I worked at a record store I remember teachers coming in looking for the cheapest ones they could find for a various lessons they had coming up. I'm glad The Audio Nerd has a box for people like them. The store is a little bit cramped with how small it is and with how much product they carry, but it is such a gem and so fun to flip through. You can spend an hour or two easily in there despite it being a small store. Live shows even happen here! They move some of the tables out and put a band in there. Shout out Hayden for always promoting upcoming shows there! And as if this place couldn't get any cooler, they also do punch cards too... Who has ever heard of a record store doing a punch card before? Absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a cool new record store, The Audio Nerd is a great place to check out.
