Phono Select is quickly becoming one of my go-to record shops. They have new, they have used, they have rare - it's small, but what is out tends to be of decent quality. If you're into punk / metal / hardcore, they have a great selection, but I've also picked up some good hip-hop, jazz, folk, and country stuff here, too. The dude that works behind the counter is super friendly, chatty, and seems to genuinely appreciate people being there. The sign even says "Friendliest Record Store." I'll be honest - as a former record store employee with a terrible attitude that kind of put me off at first. But as I've gotten older and less unruly, it was appreciated when I was able to wax nostalgic about wax with him. Good selection of 7"s, too - and if you look at their website you can virtually check what's in stop before hitting them up. Oh, and they have sales - often! - that are noted on their Instagram page. Need more shops like this. Need more people to support shops like this. I'm a fan. read more

One of the only vinyl records stores in all of Sacramento. Definitely one of the only ones we prefer. Great selection. The staff, nicest in the world. You can spend all day in there chatting about music and the way recording and distribution has changed over the years. Great place. I would stop by even if you don't have a record player or tape player. The nostalgia, the walk down memory lane when you Spin a record on your palms or stick your finger in a cd. Man I feel old. Tons of great CDs and Records, huge variety. Not a lot of "rare" CDs as I already had a lot of the stuff I saw in there but still a great selection. Lots of great records at affordable prices, and some stuff that I haven't really seen before, so that was pretty cool. Everything was sealed up so I asked the guy working the counter to open them up to check for scratches or warps, but everything was super clean and the dude at the counter was super nice. 100% would visit the store again when I'm back in town. read more

First time in and we were the only customers on a Thursday late afternoon. We came in at 5pm and they close at 6pm. The owner/manager greeted us when we walked in and then left us alone to browse (which is much appreciated). He did direct my husband to the "value" vinyls ($5) located on the back wall and pointed him out to the small hip hop/rap section when he asked about it. My husband can spend hours in any given record store...as long as the prices are fair. From what I saw the new and newer conditioned used records are $15 and up. Not surprising to see $40+ price tags either. I found a Duran Duran album that I never had in my collection. I bought it for the cover that was in perfect condition and decently priced (a quick search on ebay told me so). Hubby thought it was overpriced but I had to remind him it wasn't 1989 anymore. LOL He found some gems in the value section, and he didn't even get through all of it. I liked the murals on the walls and all the vintage concert posters. I only wish they had a personal listening station. It's a decent-sized record store, and given that it's in our hood, makes it even better. read more

I've been coming to Phono Select for a little over a year now, mostly on the weekends and I have to say I definitely agree with them being the "friendliest record store in Sacramento". Every time I visit there's a good vinyl playing, and when I visit; its usually the same guy, who's also one of the owners I believe, is also incredibly friendly and we usually strike up a conversation about what's playing or any of the new arrivals at the shop. The selection is also very professionally and cleanly set-up and I'd say the cleanest most aesthetically pleasing shop in the Sacramento area. The shop also hosts the ocassional show, and places like these are very important to the local music scene of the area, this shop definitely has more of a focus on punk, hardcore collection, and that also shows with the local shows that the shop advertises. Places like these are a very important "third space" for folks in the scene to meet up, and talk about music and Sacramento is incredibly lucky to have a shop like this. I also know that the shop had a leak a year back and thankfully, they were able to weather through that event. Definitely recommend coming here if you're a vinyl collector, or just an overall fan of music. read more

I've driven by many times -- hadn't been here in a few years, but was picking up some food at Lalo's on a Sunday morning and they were open. The jazz (what I'm listening to mostly these days) section is tiny--probably shrunk since last time I was there! What is there is mostly over-priced, too. How do kids afford to buy their "vinyls" these days? I think Kicksville is a much better store and prices stuff more reasonable--plus they have a much larger jazz section... read more

Great customer service, cool shop and neatly organized records on display for Record Store Day- I found this shop after looking at another record store's Instagram post for Record Store Day and decided to check it out since it opened later in the day and I figured I might have a better chance of scoring the record I wanted! They ended up having about 4-6 copies left of the Dirty Heads' Phantoms of Summer RSD vinyl as well as a good selection of other RSD stuff including Linkin Park and Deftones. That combined with their cute shop, friendly employees and a free root beer if you check in on Yelp made it a fun trip- I wish I had stayed longer to check out the rest of the store but I'll be back to check out more colored vinyl on an upcoming release day. Dal is the Dude! And new guys a prick. Simply put. The owner Dal was the heart and soul of that place and always made you feel welcome and comfortable any time any day. And I've never seen him anything less than happy, even if he's having a shit day he composes himself well and always puts his customers first. With that being said, this review cuts deep and hurts to give phono anything less than a 6/5, but since dal hasnt been working there full time (which Is completely understandable and am not shaming him or talking shit by saying this) i almost feel like a burden being there, and the new guy who's now there full time is just, to put it simply, a condescending fucking dickhead who acts like some "punk rock hipster" who says things that were so rude I won't even waste my time typing it out. And selling vinyls at phono was always fun and fair with dal, never had a bad experience. But now, bringing them 11 brand new Sealed vinyls all popular artists all sealed Pink floyd- the wall My chemical romance - three cheers Weezer- blue album Metallica - master of puppets Snoop dogg- missionary Pop smoke- faith A bob Dylan album can't remember which one Tyler the creator- flower boy And a few more I'm just blanking at the moment but ALL SEALED AND BRAND NEW! and after he was done fingering them and scoffing under his breath and didn't even give me the decency to pretend to give a shit. Didn't look not one of them up just gave em a quick fingering And looked me in the eyes and said 40$. And as pissed off and mad as that made me, that's not what upsets me the most. What upsets me the most is the fact that he offered me 40$ for 11 sealed vinyls knowing damn well when I walk out that door, each and everyone of those records will 40$+, so I got offered the value of there records, for 11....and to make matters worse I've come there and sold special edition vinyls in the past and was offered 5 or 10$ bucks and was told "yeah these limited editions pretty much don't really mean shit honestly" come to find out by a friend who stopped by there, there was my Limited Edition "meaningless" 10$ vinyl sitting on display..................for 80$. I dont want to say I feel like I got swindled and took for a fool, because it's my fault for putting 100% faith and trust in what they say. But to sum this up, I guess everybody can't be a Dal. I just would hope that the people he trusted to run his shop would do the absolute best of there ability to hold it a the standard it was at, instead of shitting all over it. Love you dal, employees just need a major tune up and wake up call. And again, it seriously kills me and hurts to leave this as a 2 star review...things can get much much better with a new head of the store...it's crazy how much the people and not the records affect the "RECORD" store. read more

always a kick to find a new record store in my area ... and this one did not disappoint. loved their selection (you may have to be diligent in your crate digging as some selections are in odd spots), the environment is super clean (yay for AC!), the bins aren't overly stuffed (thank goodness) ... but best of all ... the staff is super friendly. we got to talking about how i was cataloging stuff and they recommend another website that would really help me! now that's service. oh yeah, did i mention the cool little labels on all of the records? a lot of them have little mini-history lessons ... makes flipping that much more fun! i'll definitely be adding this place to my regular shopping stops! read more

I want to support her and her little Walmart Crosby Record player.... On the other hand my Denon DL160 MC cartridge [We Po' but Proud) screams in agony as it tracked dirty, scratched Vinyl. Nothing Touches Vinyl as a playback source. If it's rare and In Vinyl $30.00 is not that much---$30.00 for some fine Indica Buds or $30.00 for a bottle of Bourbon or a $30.00 rare vinyl that I can't live without...I know my choice... read more

They even had a good size bargain section although they had plenty of records for under 15 dollars. I usually shop for jazz but they had a great underground hiphop collection as well. Cool place. Awesome selection. No seriously. The selection here is THE best around. You've got to hit it up if you listen to vinyl. All categories. Even the hard to find stuff and weird stuff. I've been here twice and find stuff I've never seen before. The do trade in as well. I got a 5$ credit on my last purchase! Yayah! Good way to grow my better collection. The prices are fair. Don't expect bargain basement. That's not this. These are collectors curating a really nice selection. You are paying for their expertise in finding the best stuff. I'm sure that if you buy something you've never heard before it's most likely going to be good. Conclusion: not the cheapest vinyl store but definitely not over priced. I have not bought records but I have sold there before . This time, the guy was really negative when I brought my record in. I kept my CDs and tapes in the car since he was not interest if not reggae or hip hop.. I had some of these CDs and cassettes but I would have had to sort them out. The records he pulled a few out and checked them on the internet, fingered them a bit and said, no he was not buying anything. I took them to the Cave and they bought every one.. If you are looking to sell, do not waste your time here.. it says on the out side of the store buy and sell. Great store! I've bought a lot of records here. The guy with the glasses is the best person to talk to. Very passionate about what he does. Totally respects your business and loves to discuss classic bands and letting you cherry pick through product when it comes in. Asked online for some recommendations since I was coming in from out of town. Phono-Select kept coming up, and I'm soooo glad I went! Massive selection of punk, hardcore, metal, and psych! Top notch grading! Super nice staff! (Thanks Randall) Like most collectible record stores these days they can be a little pricey, but are more than fair when you figure the price (+ shipping) from online dealers! (and you have it in hand right then) As a person with over 1,000 records I found several I felt very comfortable paying for. We found some of the vinyl's we wanted here so was glad about that. The downside was that after we did some exploring in aa larger area (several areas outside Sacramento) we found then to big really overpriced and the selection actually fairly limited in comparison. We were made to think the market was constrained for a variety of reasons but found an abundance of selection and better prices everywhere. As an example, several, albums we bought for $65 we found for never more than $40 elsewhere(dozens of shops). I don't mind paying a little variation but felt like some of the mark-ups are well beyond what it going on in the market and extraneous factors. Obviously their choice but not planning on paying those prices anymore now that I know better. read more

This is a haven for the record-loving music connoisseur, a place to go for quality, variety and knowledge. The first thing that struck me about Phono Select was how clean and organized it is. Usually a record store is a chaotic mix of disorganized racks, posters and memorabilia. Here, you'll find a small but incredibly organized selection of quality vinyl from quality artists of all generations. There is a great display of more valuable records behind the register on the wall. The employees are curt and dry, but they obviously appreciate a fellow music lover and love what they do. Because this is such a specialty store, the selection is top quality and therefore a little limited. But if you want a record by your favorite artist in great shape, there is no better place to go. read more

I found three albums I wanted but hadn't seen around and they were priced very fairly. They're in a great spot, just near the outside of Sacramento. When I stopped by, there was a great food truck. I'm really excited to return and spend more time. They have a great setup and the staff is great. I have a passion for record shopsand this is a great one. Our go-to record store! My husband and I stop by monthly to browse the huge selection of vinyl. Phono has a mix of used and new records. This store is extremely clean and well organized. We have found that the owners are very knowledgeable and used to work at Tower Records. Be sure to give them a follow on Instagram where they often show the latest going into the bins. read more

I used to be a customer when they had their old location, I finally got a chance to check out their new location and it's fantastic. After trying to find used CD's anywhere in Sacramento and Elk Grove I found that Phonoselect is basically the only place you can buy them since Dimple shut down. On the bright side, that means that basically every used CD that gets sold goes to Phonoselects inventory so their shelves are always stocked with new CD's. Most of the CD's were priced at $3 and the disks themselves were flawless, significantly better quality than what I've gotten used to at Dimple, and for way less! read more

I'm biased. Well, in truth, we all are. Some people are scared to admit it. Some are too arrogant to see it. And many don't realize that their biases are emitted at the most inopportune times. Here is my ode to the 12 step program. I am biased because I'm picky and my standards are too f***ing high. There, I said it. When it comes to vinyl, I am not biased. Rather, open to ideas and recommendations. Why? Because I don't know jackshit about records. Sure I listened to them when I was studying classical music: Glenn Gould, Horowitz, Ashkenazy.......Modern and jazz? Not really. It is because I have my likes and dislikes. Sure, I enjoy Champagne music or what the ex pointed out as Vanilla music. I collected a bunch of Guy Lombardo vinyl and he even gave donated me a couple to get them off his shelf. Although, I have not started a Lawrence Welk section. No Percy Faith. No Mario Lanza. Yet. What makes me happy about this cute modern store, is the availability of music in various forms geared towards the unique and innately encompassing. The boys behind the concept have given this interesting space a new name and a new reason to meander over after snacking at Rick's Dessert Diner or Sugar Plum Vegan. CDs and Vinyl take up the key points of this simple box layout, with interesting tabs set aside for Hardcore, Hicksville, Hillbilly, and of course, my favorite, Jazz cats. The stretch of vinyl was a welcome sight and well presented. In the end, I purchased two (only because the previous days had already added a good 25 pieces to my small yet growing collection): Cruising With Cab, Cab Calloway Lp and a Rusty Dedrick Salute to Bunny Berrigan. I was also toying with a Benny Goodman record, but recalled having just picked one up at a thrift store. Newer Count Basie collections, but I had just picked up four the other day. Temptation! The prices for both of these were significantly lower than say eBay and other vinyl sites. And, of course, no shipping charges here. Great staff, awesome space, a good selection with potential that I hope they expand......and did I mention I was biased? Only because I have several friends who were integral components and I wish the best for them, as any firm believer should and would. read more
