I went here the past weekend while visiting my Grandpa Walter. He was dying (poor choice of words, perhaps) to get out of Cuesta Manor and into the real world again. He kept going on about how he wanted to go to Penguins. Penguins, this, penguins, that. I'm pretty sure Walt is senile, but I also suspect he's just fucking with us.
After 20 minutes of trying to decipher what "penguins" meant ("Do you wanna go to the zoo, pops?"), his nurse came by and told us he meant Tuxeedoz, some fancy-pants new restaurant that recently opened. So, we shuffled him into the rental car, headed over the river and to Tuxeedoz. It didn't take long for me to realize why Walt changed into the powder-blue tuxedo he wore at my parents' wedding in 1977 -- everyone here was wearing tuxedos! Even the valet dudes were wearing reflective tuxedo jackets. Très impressed.
Like Heather C, I showed up without wearing the mandatory tuxedo, so I had to wear the tuxedo bib. I didn't mind too much, but I would've worn my tuxedo t-shirt had I known about the dress code. My grandpa was having fun flirting with the tuxedo-ed waitress and drinking root beer. The black-and-white dinner menu started with an amuse-bouche of black olive caviar bites; continued with white lasagna and blackened tuna; and ended with chocolate and vanilla frosted donuts (donuts are sooo in right now, gastro-hipsters!). It was all so yummy, and service was prompt and polite, as only service in a tuxedo should be.
Anyway, a delightful evening with Grandpa Walt in the ABQ -- I'll be back! read more
