My wife and I had attended many Broadway, Off Broadway and Summer Stock shows before arriving in Issaquah in 1978. During the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, we went to music venues in Greenwich Village at the south end of Fifth Avenue, near New York University and Washington Square. Places we heard jazz, folk music and more included Village Gate, Village Vanguard, Fillmore East and Cafe Wha'. More about that later. The Village Theater started producing shows in 1979. Boy, were we lucky! We attended their shows in an early 20th Century converted movie theater with many mismatched types of seating. We followed them to their state-of-the-art Frances Gaudette Theater in 1994, just up Front Street. More recently, they started to put on their shows in Everett, as well as Issaquah. Village Theater puts on classic Broadway/West End shows (mainly musicals but not always) and new shows created/produced locally. Over the years, those local shows included Pulitzer Prize winning NEXT TO NORMAL, Tony Award winner MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET and IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU nominated for a Drama Desk Award. The old theater now houses their new musicals (VILLAGE ORIGINALS) and is the venue for their children's education program called KIDSTAGE. For the last two decades, usually in August, the VT has put on a weekend of new shows open to the public for commentary. It was at one of these previews in 2024 that we first saw WE AIN'T EVER GONNA BREAK UP. At that presentation, it was Gregg Hammer and Louis Pardo (writers and actors), two chairs and a guitar or two. No sets, no costumes, no orchestra. Last night, we saw the final version of the show on the third day of performances with sets, costumes, props and still no orchestra. It helped that we grew up and saw performances in the 1960s in New York at Village Gate and Cafe Wha'. It helped that saw live, the folk singers whom Pardo and Hammer emulate in their show. We lived the history as well such as Woodstock and Vietnam. However, it is not necessary to have lived it to enjoy the show. The guys are great singers, actors and musicians. The soundtrack is wonderful. The set is spectacular. It is a snapshot of a part of US music and history from the early 1960s to the mid1990s. It is fun. It is 100 minutes that flies by (no intermission so plan for that). Folk legend Bob Dylan, record producer Sam Phillips (Sun Records in Memphis) and pop/rock hero Neil Diamond make brief guest appearances. On a scale of one to five stars (five being the best), this gets 7.5 stars. Go see it in Issaquah or later in Everett.

It didn't even seem like they were having fun. After taking a lesson with Johnny and Samantha, seeing their skill, originality, and passion for salsa got me inspired enough to continue with it, and I'm having a great time. It's also really nice to know that your instructors are actively engaged in what they love to do - I see Johnny out at the salsa clubs all the time. It's not like he just teaches and never comes out. After few classes, my daughter overall like the lessons, TA and the class. I however think the instructor can be more kids friendly, specially the gym is marketed for kids. The gym is definitely dated. During registration, their customer service was not very friendly either. I'll be bk to give another review at the end of the season. They are strict about the outfit, if not wearing a leotard, shirts must be tuck inside the biker shirt. All hair should be tied back. I think this is very reasonable.

That said, if you're looking for a fun extracurricular for your kid, or even a more serious one, but still one you don't expect them to make a career out of, I'd advise staying away. I attended for ~7yrs and suffer nightmares years later. It's a cutthroat environment. There are some good instructors (ex. Ms. Hiromi), but also some very unkind ones. The culture between dancers is not very good either, I suspect because of the students mirroring what is said to them by certain instructors. Bullying runs rampant and was, in some circumstances, pretty extreme. Outside of comments about technique and jealousy over roles, there were also a lot of damaging things said regarding weight, both by students and, rarely (but still enough to leave scars), instructors.

It is one of the premier dance academies in the area with amazing dance teachers! My daughter started in the little girls class, progressed to intermediate, went on pointe when she was 11, and has been enrolled in the pre-professional program. Not only has she learned a beautiful art form, but the classes also keep her in great physical shape, giving her a drive and a goal to strive towards. She's also made some amazing friendships along the way. Even in the young 4/5/6 year old classes, she was learning ballet but in a fun way. IBA encourages even the youngest dancers to have good technique and a good foundation, but also making dance fun and enjoyable. IBA even has a children's production every year to ensure even the youngest dancers have a chance to get on stage and experience that magic under the stage lights. Yes, IBA does have expectations for ALL their girls including the younger ones - simple expectations of having a neat bun, appropriate attire and a good attitude. Expectations that are something the girls will need to be prepared for later on as they get older whether in dance (at any academy!) or simply in life. Some expectations also include volunteering in the shows if your child is in it, even the older girls, us parents are required to put in our time. The expectations for both the children and adults are laid out explicitly ahead of time and its not the fault of IBA should someone not adhere to those. I highly recommend IBA - smaller class size so more individualized attention and teaching, solid foundation for classical Vaganova style dance with emphasis on encouraging a well-rounded dance background so they offer classes in other dance disciplines like jazz, contemporary, character, flamenco, modern.

In the beginning my kid enjoyed going to the classes. But of late i have been hearing complaints about the dance teacher being harsh and too strict. I have tried to stay optimistic hoping that the things would improve and offered support, encouragement but unfortunately it did not work in my kid's case. My kid started losing interest in learning dance from her and is cranky to even go to the class. I would not recommend this dance school for younger kids (ages below 10).
