The quality of the meatballs and of…read morethe pizza is always the litmus test of an Italian joint, in my opinion, and Tesoro Cucina nailed both. Their pizza is the equal of Regina's, although I would have to make sure that mine wouldn't come out well-done if I ordered it again. I say "if" because I'm not sure if I'll be doing business there again. Last night, my wife and I decided to get meatball subs from Tesoro's. She encouraged me to hustle because they close at 7:30 and she told me she'd phone in the order before I got there. When I arrived at approximately 7:07, there was a guy locking the door from the outside. It was dark and I had just got out of my car, so I couldn't tell if it was the owner or not, but before I could approach, he said "We're closed." My reply was "Oh. didn't my wife call in for a couple of sandwiches?," to which he replied "No." Maybe it would have been expecting too much from him to include a "Sorry" in our brief exchange, but he was brusque and dismissive which really stuck in my craw because the Tesoro take out menu states that the business stays open until 7:30. The last time I was there, I was tactful enough to not complain about my pizza being scorched and I was also tactful for not calling the guy out for advertising their closing time at 7:30 and then then turning away a prospective customer in a less-than-polite manner. We've been searching for another good place other than the Riverview to get a pizza and maybe that search will have to continue now. However, all was not lost after my being turned away by Tesoro's because I stopped at Mikey's Famous Roast Beef on the way home and brought home a meatball sub that was shockingly delicious and I will henceforth be doing my part to make that meatball sandwich as "famous" as their roast beef.

She was patient and kind and took the time to understand what we needed. We ordered cocktails... because tonight was the last night I could before I re-start chemotherapy. Both my father and I ordered the Sangria ($14.00) ... And it was *amazing*. Honestly, it was the best I've had since my best friend and I drank together at a Flamenco restaurant in Montreal in June of 1985. My mother ordered the house dry red wine ($10.00) I didn't taste it and she didn't mention whether it was good or not. We ordered one Ceasar Salad ($10.00) and it was both really generous and incredibly delicious (see photo). My parents and I split it three was and it was plenty. The tang of the dressing really worked against the sardines and garlic. I'd definitely go back for more of that!! For dinner, my mother ordered the beef special.... Beef Braciole ($33.00) in an epic sauce. She loved it... but definitely could not finish it!! She brought the leftovers home (as did my father and I). My father ordered the Veal parmigiana ($29.99) and it was a massive, almost overwhelming plate of food (photo attached). He loved it (as did I when I tasted it!). For me?? I ordered the Pollo Vodka Bella Napoli ($26.99 - photo attached). It was a huge, almost overwhelming bowl of food and it was amazing. Deep, rich flavor with mushrooms, bacon, shallots, and tender chunks of chicken. The noodles we all ordered were the home made & hand-made fusilli that are produced in-house. I think that if a chef is going to spend the time necessary to make noodles, you should savor them... and that's what we did. Suzanne offered us a chance at dessert, but we declined, since we knew that if any of us ate a bite more, we would hit critical mass and destroy at least the surrounding block. The only weak point we encountered was the bread. It was weak, drab, and lacking in taste and character. They could do much better on that. Our bill, with taxes, was $162.62. With tip, it came to $195. Totally worth it!

When a server finally did approach our table, instead of asking if we had been helped, she asked if we were moving. There were four of us sitting there waiting for service, and the entire interaction made us feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. I don't like jumping to conclusions, but the difference in how we were treated made it very difficult not to question whether there was some type of bias involved. If that wasn't the reason, then there is still a serious issue with the level of service and how guests are being treated. The most disappointing part is that we drove all the way from Virginia to experience Salem and were genuinely excited to be here. To have one of our first experiences leave us feeling this unwelcome was incredibly upsetting. Waiting 20 minutes is one thing. Being completely ignored and then finally approached only to be asked if we were moving is another. Unfortunately, we left feeling like we simply weren't wanted there.

My cosmo was one of the best I had. We asked for some recommendations, and she was spot on. The caprese salad was a plump delicious heirloom tomato with delicious pesto, mozzarella and balsamic dressing. The arancini was a cheesy risotto in a bolognese sauce that my husband couldn't stop saying "fantastic." Same with me. We ended up splitting the sliced filet which was cooked to perfection. Oh, and I forgot about the delicious warm bread and parmigian oil that was to die for. Service and food are 5 stars. We are going to come back again and again!! Loved it.
